As the NCBSN website states, "The NLC increases access to care while maintaining public protection at the state level. Under the NLC, nurses can practice in other NLC states, without having to obtain additional licenses." At the time of this recording, there were 37 states and two other jurisdictions (Washington, D.C. and Guam) signed on, with a number of other new members pending (Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Working as a nurse unit manager was a huge adventure for me! According to a survey put out by Trusted Health earlier this year, half of all nurses have been the subject of an attack, intimidation or assault by a patient or patient’s family member since the start of the pandemic.  Our guest for today’s episode, Mel Cortez, experienced this first hand working in a Baltimore area ICU. Later, when she saw how many nurses were leaving the profession because of workplace violence, she was inspired to start Cortex Gold, a joint venture between two nurses and a Marine Corps veteran whose mission is to help hospitals create a safer, more secure workplace for nurses and other healthcare workers. Considering the overwhelming nature of our career as nurses, it’s normal to have a mind full of competing stories and thoughts, sometimes, its really hard to see what is story and what is fact! If you are feeling like your brain has you running round in circles, good news your human! It just so happens that our primitive brains are wired to entertain these thoughts without them being factual truth! I believe we need to learn how to assess our thoughts and differentiate which ones are facts and which ones are simply stories we tell ourselves that we have practiced believing are true despite evidence to the contrary. In this episode, I discuss how our brain works and how we must actively distinguish facts from stories to take back our power and manage our mind for life and career success! This episode is part of an ongoing series about mental health integration services as part of the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium’s (NNCC's) work through the Philadelphia Nurse-Family Partnership and Mabel Morris Family Home Visiting Program. Home visiting nurses from at NNCC identified the growing demand for mental health care for clients. In response, NNCC onboarded two therapists to provide counseling directly to parents in the home visiting programs at no cost to the client. In this episode, we speak to two mothers currently receiving therapeutic services through the Joseph J. Peters Institute. In this week’s episode, I am joined by Tara Brandner, a nurse practitioner and infertility “warrior” turned full-time fertility coach. She’s spent the past decade pursuing nursing including a master’s and doctorate degree. She endured a long road through infertility followed by infertility treatments and a traumatic pregnancy.  After experiencing a long road through infertility, she decided she wanted to help couples in their journey to grow their family. Through her experiences as a healthcare professional and personal struggle with infertility, she recognized there are large gaps of care for women and couples struggling with infertility. She chose to change paths to provide a full suite of coaching services and support for those struggling to build their family.  Tara shares her story of infertility, and how her own experience has led to advocating for change after being on the other side of the system. Being mindful of the present is not an easy thing to do. We either get caught in the rabbit hole of the past, or we get too anxious about the future.  While recovering from COVID, I had deep reflections about what was going on in my inner world. The isolation worked in my favour as it gave me enough time to ponder on being mindful.   For this episode, you will hear my insights about how mindfulness can help us understand how we’re feeling. As part of our Special Report series, we shift our focus from nursing burnout to an innovative nurse-based initiative to build vaccine confidence in California. Today we talk with Dr. Hafeeza Anchrum, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Penn Program on Race, Science, and Society (PRSS). Curious about the history of nurses that shared her experiences, she recently completed a doctoral degree capturing the oral history of black nurses and their struggle for equality during the civil rights movement. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, as a child of a mother of the civil rights movement, Dr. Anchrum understood the need to preserve these stories due to a scarcity of historical scholarship focused on black nurses. In this week’s episode, I am joined by Marcie Resendes, Registered Nurse and Author of, ‘If The Brain Could Stop What The Eyes have Seen.’ Marcie shares her story of overcoming being diagnosed with PTSD, how she lives with it and manages it day to day. We also discuss methods of how we can protect ourselves against burnout, leading to mental illness, and overwhelm in the workforce.  About Marcie: “I am a 42-year-old wife, mother to three beautiful children ages 17, 15 and 6. I am a Registered Nurse and proud to say I have been for 21 1⁄2 years. The nursing school Diploma Program at St. Clair College was a struggle, but I had a strong heart and passion to be a nurse; a good kick in the butt from my dad when I was 19 pushed me through. During the summer of 1998, I volunteered at the Pelee Island Medical Clinic. I worked beside two wonderful nurses who allowed me to observe clinics, minor traumas, and what nursing in an isolated area is. I witnessed head injuries after drunken falls, fractures of bones, sprains and strains, as well as general labs and medical check ups. I loved the opportunity to gain this experience in nursing. It was totally different than at the hospital. I was able to observe how a team (EMS, Police,and Nursing) work together to get the job done. June 18, 1999 was the day my dreams came true: I graduated on the Principal’s Honour Roll. Finally I could do what I had strived to do: take care of the sick and make them well. Growing up I had been raised to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO of the company. I was told that each team member in a company has a vital job to do each and every day to keep the company running. Little did I know that after 19 1⁄2 years of caring for the sick, wounded, critically injured, dying and mentally unstable would leave me with wounds unrecognizable to the human eye. I attended an appointment with my Nurse Practitioner on January 10, 2019, that’s when my life changed. I thought I was having a simple return to work appointment after a bout of influenza the week before, but it turned out to be so much more. Today on the Amplify Nursing podcast we talk with internationally recognized historian of nursing Dr. Patricia D’Antonio, Director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Studying the history of nursing has been the joy of Dr. D'Antonio's career and she believes history is one of the most critical methodologies we have to confront the complexities we face in health and helathcare today and to think about how all things are interconnected. Dr. D'Antonio is one of the authors of a white paper examining the history of racism in nursing that will be released along with the 2022 National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing Foundational Report. The Commission's goal is to look at how racism is still perpetuated in nursing and by nurses and to create strategies to combat it. Dr. D'Antonio talks with us about the history of racism in nursing, how historians look at the past, and how structural racism is embedded in nursing's origin story. In this episode, I have a fascinating conversation with Athol Hann. He’s a Clinical Emergency Nurse, Founder of AtholTech, and fwards app and known for his Burnout No More courses. Athol experienced first-hand what burnout feels like for healthcare professionals and started questioning if he can stay with his profession in the long run.  Surprisingly, he wasn’t aware that he was experiencing burnout until he had hateful feelings towards work. He went from someone who loves the nursing profession to someone who hated it.   All the little stress in the workplace piled up, and he knew that something needs to be done otherwise he might end up harming himself or others. He eventually developed a process that allowed him to better deal with burnout and this gave rise to the Burnout No More Courses. He encourages nurses to tune in with themselves, write journals and ask for colleagues’ help.  Nurses share the same stress and problems in the workplace, it’s a powerful strategy to learn how others are coping with burnout. On the next episode of the Amplify Nursing podcast, we talk with Ravenne Aponte. Ravenne is a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing focusing her research on the history of black nurses. Ravenne started her educational career with a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies with a minor in Health Disparities and then received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, working as a Pediatric ICU nurse. It was the combination of these experiences that lead to her interest in nursing history and workforce diversity that ultimately lead her to co-create the Nurses You Should Know (NYSK) project. Nurses You Should Know, is a social media and digital campaign whose goal is to elevate the stories of nurses of color and to make their impact more widely known. We talk with Ravenne about how her educational, clinical, and life experiences contributed to the work she does today, the disconnect between nursing history and practice, and how she is using the NYSK project to highlight the work nurses of color have done - and are doing - to contribute to the nursing profession.

According to Cynda Rushton, Anne and George L. Bunting Professor of Clinical Ethics at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, the answer is yes. But the profession and the greater health care system must be ready to take some advised and intentional steps forward.
