Dr Karen O’Donnell has published a new book: The Dark Womb: Re-Conceiving Theology through Reproductive Loss. Amazingly, the book is the first academic theological investigation into the impact the experience of reproductive loss has on the way that we think about God and faith. She wrote the book in response to her own personal losses as a young woman and the growing awareness that there were no deep explorations of the issues that she was addressing.
In this episode, we reflect on the language used and the way that reproductive loss affects our relationship with others and with God.
Trigger Warning
Whilst this episode does not talk graphically about the subject, it does analyse the way in which it affects people and so if you are someone who has been affected by reproductive loss and are having a down day, you might want to save this episode for another time.

Seeds of Silence exists to support and encourage Christians and others in developing a practice of silence-based prayer through on line and face-to-face workshops, discussion groups, training and a signposting website. The team has changed over those years but we're delighted to still be offering relevant discussions covering the broad topics of feminism and the Christian faith!Mon, 10 Jan 2022 - 44min - 26 - The Language of Divorce with Valerie Hobbs
Valerie Hobbs has been a Christian for most of her life and said that she was brought up in a series of abusive church communities. She grew up around men who dehumanised and abused women, and also weaponised certain women against each other. Because of this, for a significant portion of her life, she was unable to read the Bible because she heard only the voices of these hateful men and women. She has spent the last 25-30 years deconstructing all the many layers of her upbringing. But she can also say that the testimony of her life is the enduring presence of the love of God. God has brought various people into her life over the years, who have adopted her into their love and friendship, and showed her the compassion and faithfulness of Jesus Christ. One such person is her husband Andrew, to whom she’s been married for 20 years.
In her work life, she has been an academic for close to 20 years. She is a linguist at the University of Sheffield, and has particular expertise in religious language. She’s particularly interested in the ways religious language reveals our most sacred commitments in all their complexity. Her book on religious language was published earlier this year, and she has also published articles on such topics as religious language and disability, religious language and divorce, and religious language and violence against women. She also has a blog about the Bible and enjoys making short videos about themes in the Bible. You can follow Valerie:

She’s a research associate at the Centre for the Study of the Bible and Violence. The Academic Arm of the Centre aims to study questions appertaining to Bible and Violence deeply and rigorously in collaboration with scholars from different (or no) faith traditions, nationalities and academic disciplines. One of her most recent collaborations with the centre director, the Rev. Dr. Helen Paynter (a former speaker on the podcast), was an analysis of fascist rhetoric in connection with the violence carried out by a white supremacist mob at the United States Capitol in January, 2021. https://www.csbvbristol.org.uk/2021/01/12/qanon-christian-apocalypticism/?fbclid=IwAR0sCpsv8trk9hqjqQFbfdm4RTSq1eosLBSyk1tZXX_ZdRozrtNZPQVKFE4

She has a husband, three children and two grandchildren. She loves music and poetry, and grew up in Nottingham.

Alison & Grace were having a conversation in the summer of 2019 about podcasts and they weren't aware of any at the time that spoke to their context, so they decided to set one up. You can hear more about their thinking about the podcast on the Introductions episode.
Grace & Alison worked on the podcast together for the first year but Grace had other commitments that meant she had to give the podcast up, so from February 2021 the podcast is carrying on without her. We are still hoping to have new podcast co-hosts, maybe even a team. Could it be you? Do get in touch.

Rhiannon Grant talks to Alison about the language that we use for God in this episode. There is some background hissing during the interview that we haven’t been able to get rid of – many apologies!
Rhiannon is a Quaker, an academic, and passionate about equality and integrity. She is an author and works for Woodbrooke, the Quaker study centre in Birmingham.
Last year her book Telling the Truth about Godwas published, which talks about how we improve our ways of saying what we do know about God.
Her new book, Quakers Do What! Why?is an introduction to Quaker oddities. Based on a question and answer format, it is for anyone who has learned a fact about Quakers - perhaps only that Quakers exist - and wants to know more.

Sharon says: "I believe passionately in community and that every person has value and worth. God values creation and humanity is the culmination of his love. For me, this is translated in the way we care for one another, those around us and the planet. As recipients of that all-encompassing love the church should be outward facing, and our mission is to show the love of God by getting actively involved in all areas of life. If we are to be inclusive, our narrative about God’s love should be embodied, as evidenced in our commitment to social justice: equality and inclusion, the equitable distribution of material wealth, care of the vulnerable and looking after creation. It saddens me when I see a group that is not representative. I challenge myself and others by asking the question, ‘who is missing?’"
