Ali Velshi is an award-winning journalist, host of “Velshi”, Chief Correspondent for MSNBC, and a weekly economics contributor to NPR’s “Here And Now.” He has covered multiple U.S. Midterm and Presidential elections and significant news stories around the globe, including extensive reporting from Ukraine and across Central and Eastern Europe during the Russian invasion, the Syrian refugee crisis from Turkey and Jordan, the Iran Nuclear Deal in Tehran, the Greek debt crisis in Athens, and the funeral of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. He hosts the “Velshi Banned Book Club” on MSNBC, and the “Velshi Banned Book Club” podcast. Velshi is known for his immersive on-the-ground reporting and his interactive discussions with small groups, which form part of his ongoing series, Velshi Across America. He previously worked as an anchor and correspondent for Al Jazeera America and CNN. Born in Nairobi and raised in Toronto, Velshi holds a degree in Religion and an honorary Doctorate of Laws from Canada’s Queen’s University. He serves on the boards of the National Constitution Center, the Chicago History Museum, the X-Prize Foundation, and the Philadelphia Citizen. Velshi is the author of Gimme My Money Back and The Trump Indictments, co-author of How to Speak Money and the upcoming Open Space (2025). Velshi has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards and is the recipient of two National Headliner Awards and a Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award.
A captivating family history that illustrates how small actions can have an outsized political impact. Small acts of courage matter. Sometimes, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom—for idealism itself—against all odds, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard, and costly. More than a century ago, MSNBC host Ali Velshi’s great-grandfather sent his seven-year-old son to live at Tolstoy Farm, Gandhi’s ashram in South Africa. This difficult decision would change the trajectory of his family history forever. From childhood, Velshi’s grandfather was imbued with an ethos of public service and social justice, and a belief in absolute equality among all people—ideals that his children carried forward as they escaped apartheid, emigrating to Kenya and ultimately Canada and the United States. In Small Acts of Courage, Velshi taps into 125 years of family history to advocate for social justice as a living, breathing experience—a way of life more than an ideology. With rich detail and vivid prose, he relates the stories of regular people who made a lasting commitment to fight for change, even when success seemed impossible. This heartfelt exploration of how we can breathe new life into the principles of pluralistic democracy is an urgent call to action—for progress to be possible, we must all do whatever we can to make a difference.

Wed, 01 May 2024 - 1h 09min - 1147 - 1093 Austin Frerick / Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry

Austin is an expert on agricultural and antitrust policy. During the 2020 presidential campaign, he advised candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg on agricultural policy before ultimately serving as Co-Chair of the Biden campaign’s Agriculture Antitrust Policy Committee. He is a Fellow of the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale University, an initiative that brings together faculty, students, and scholars to collaborate on research related to competition policy and antitrust enforcement. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Common Good Iowa and the Socially Responsible Agriculture Project. In 2022, The Advocate named him a "Champion of Pride.”
He recently published his debut book, Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America’s Food Industry, which profiles a series of powerful magnates to illustrate the concentration of power in the American food system. The book has received universal acclaim. Publishers Weekly gave it a Starred Review and the host of Bloomberg's Odd Lots commended the book, remarking that “I have come away with a completely different idea of agriculture that I cannot unsee." The book has received praise from across the political spectrum, including a rave review from The American Conservative.
Austin also has a strong track record of organizing conferences and other forums to push the conversation forward on agriculture policy. He recently worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to organize a conference and publish a compendium at Yale Law School entitled “Reforming America’s Food Retail Markets,” which explored competition issues in the nation’s food retail industry. He previously spearheaded other conferences at the Yale Law School, including “Big Ag & Antitrust: Competition Policy for a Sustainable and Humane Food System.” He also created & organized the "Heartland Forum" in Storm Lake, Iowa, the first candidate forum during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary process, which focused on the impacts of economic concentration in rural America.
Austin is a 7th generation Iowan. His mother Kathy managed a beauty salon in his hometown of Cedar Rapids before opening her own bakery. His father Scott delivered and merchandised beer for a local, family-owned beer distributor. Austin’s passion for agriculture comes from spending weekends working with his Grandpa Frerick.
He has held a job since the age of 12, when he started working at the Cedar Rapids Gazette as a paperboy. He attended Grinnell College on merit scholarships and Pell Grants. While in college, Austin wrote two theses on corporate power in Iowa’s slaughterhouse communities. After being the first in his family to graduate from college, Austin attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for graduate school on a full academic scholarship. He has since held positions at the Congressional Research Service and at the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Tax Analysis, where he published research on executive compensation, pharmaceutical corporate charity abuses, and the growth of concentration in the American economy.
“In this eye-opening debut study, Frerick, an agricultural policy fellow at Yale University, reveals the ill-gained stranglehold that a handful of companies have on America’s food economy…It’s a disquieting critique of private monopolization of public necessities.” --Publishers Weekly, starred Barons is the story of seven corporate titans, their rise to power, and the consequences for everyone else. Take Mike McCloskey, Chairman of Fair Oaks Farms. In a few short decades, he went from managing a modest dairy herd to running the Disneyland of agriculture, where school children ride trams through mechanized warehouses filled with tens of thousands of cows that never see the light of day. What was the key to his success? Hard work and exceptional business savvy? Maybe. But more than anything else, Mike benefitted from deregulation of the American food industry, a phenomenon that has consolidated wealth in the hands of select tycoons, and along the way, hollowed out the nation’s rural towns and local businesses. Along with Mike McCloskey, readers will meet a secretive German family that took over the global coffee industry in less than a decade, relying on wealth traced back to the Nazis to gobble up countless independent roasters. They will discover how a small grain business transformed itself into an empire bigger than Koch Industries, with ample help from taxpayer dollars. And they will learn that in the food business, crime really does pay—especially when you can bribe and then double-cross the president of Brazil. These, and the other stories in this book, are simply examples of the monopolies and ubiquitous corruption that today define American food. The tycoons profiled in these pages are hardly unique: many other companies have manipulated our lax laws and failed policies for their own benefit, to the detriment of our neighborhoods, livelihoods, and our democracy itself. Barons paints a stark portrait of the consequences of corporate consolidation, but it also shows we can choose a different path. A fair, healthy, and prosperous food industry is possible—if we take back power from the barons who have robbed us of it.

Stephanie Kelton is a professor of economics and public policy at Stony Brook University. She is a leading expert on Modern Monetary Theory, a former Chief Economist on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee (Democratic staff), and an advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns. She was named by POLITICO as one of the 50 people most influencing the policy debate in America. Her highly-anticipated book, The Deficit Myth (2020), became an instant New York Times bestseller.
FINDING THE MONEY follows American economist Stephanie Kelton on a journey through. Modern Money Theory or “MMT”. Kelton provocatively asserts the National Debt Clock that ticks ominously upwards in New York City is not actually a debt for us taxpayers at all, nor a burden for our grandchildren to pay back. Instead, Kelton describes the national debt as simplya historical record of the number of dollars created by the US federal government currently being held in pockets, as assets, by the rest of us.
MMT bursts into the mainstream media, with journalists asking, “Have we been thinking about how the government spends money, all wrong?” But top economists and politicians from across the political spectrum condemn the theory as “voodoo economics”, “crazy” and “a crackpot theory”.
FINDING THE MONEY traces the conflict all the way back to the story we tell about money, injecting new hope and empowering countries around the world to tackle the biggest challenges of the 21st century: from climate change to inequality.

Joseph E. Stiglitz is a professor of economics at Columbia University and the recipient of a John Bates Clark Medal and a Nobel Prize. He is also the former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank. His books include Globalization and Its Discontents, The Three Trillion Dollar War, and Making Globalization Work. He lives in New York City.
From one of the world’s leading economists, a compelling new vision of personal and economic freedom.
We are a nation born from the conviction that people must be free. But since the middle of the last century, that idea has been co-opted. Forces on the political Right have justified exploitation by cloaking it in the rhetoric of freedom, leading to pharmaceutical companies freely overcharging for medication, a Big Tech free from oversight, politicians free to incite rebellion, corporations free to pollute, and more. How did we get here? Whose freedom are we―and should we―be thinking about?
In The Road to Freedom, Nobel prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz dissects America’s current economic system and the political ideology that created it, laying bare their twinned failure. “Free” and unfettered markets have only succeeded in delivering a series of crises: the financial crisis, the opioid crisis, and the crisis of inequality. While a small portion of the population has amassed considerable wealth, wages for most people have stagnated. Free and unfettered markets have exploited consumers, workers, and the environment alike. Such failures have fed populist movements that believe being free means abandoning any obligations citizens have to one another. As they grow in strength, these movements now pose a real threat to true economic and political freedom.
As an economic advisor to presidents and as chief economist at the World Bank, Stiglitz has witnessed these profound changes firsthand. As he argues, the failures follow from the elites’ unshakeable dedication to “the neoliberal experiment.” Explicitly taking on giants such as Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman, Stiglitz exposes accepted ideas about our political and economic life for what they are: twisted visions that tear at the social fabric while they enrich the very few.
The Road to Freedom breaks new ground, showing how economics―including recent advances in which Stiglitz has played such an important role―reframes how to think about freedom and the role of the state in a twenty-first century society. Drawing on the work of contemporary philosophers, Stiglitz explains a deeper, more humane way to assess freedoms―one that considers with care what to do when one person’s freedom conflicts with another’s. We must reimagine our existing economic and legal systems and embrace forms of collective action, including regulation and investment, if we are to create an innovative society in which everyone can flourish. The task could not be more urgent, and Stiglitz’s latest book is essential reading for those committed to the American ideal of an economic and political system that delivers well-being, opportunity, and meaningful freedoms for all.

From the veteran broadcaster and historian comes a richly reported portrait of the newest Americans, immigrants from all over the globe who are living all across the country, filled with their own voices.
We are a nation of immigrants, never more than now. In recent decades, the numbers have skyrocketed, thanks to people coming from many continents—especially Asia, Africa, and South America. Just like their predecessors, they face countless obstacles, including political hatred. And yet, just like their predecessors, they work hard. They persist. And they become us. The newest Americans are poorly understood and frequently presented only in stereotypes. Veteran journalist, broadcaster, and interviewer Ray Suarez has criss-crossed the country to speak to new Americans from all corners of the globe, and to record their stories. This portrait of our newest citizens is full of their own, compelling voices. It’s a story as old as the country, yet each new wave of arrivals tells that classic story in new and crucially important ways.
Since launching Brooklyn Boy Productions in 2019, he has created content for public radio and television, The Washington Post, The Independent (London), The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pew Research, Knowable, “America in One Room,” Hispanics in Philanthropy, Slate, The Nation, Hearst TV, AlterNet, CityPaper, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the American Communities Project, and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, among others.
In his long and distinguished career, Ray has also hosted NPR’s “Talk of the Nation,” Al Jazeera America’s daily news program “Inside Story;” and been Chief National Correspondent for PBS NewsHour.
His published books include “The Holy Vote: The Politics of Faith in America,” “The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration,” and the companion volume to the PBS documentary series “Latino Americans.” His most recent book, “We Are Home,” traces the emerging demographics of the US in the 21st century through in-depth interviews with immigrants from wide-ranging origins, eras and experiences.
Ray has been a frequent presenter, speaker and moderator at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and a featured speaker at the Aspen Ideas Festival. He holds a BA in African History from New York University and an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago, where he was a Benton Fellow. Today, the AcademyHealth Board of Directors announced their selection of nationally recognized thought leader, science communicator, pediatrician, and health services researcher, Aaron Carroll, M.D., M.S., as the next President and CEO of AcademyHealth.
"Dr. Carroll is a fantastic choice to lead AcademyHealth into the next era of advocating for the use of evidence to improve the delivery of health care and to improve health for all," said chair of the AcademyHealth Board of Directors Lucy Savitz, Ph.D., M.B.A, professor in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Health Policy and Management in the Graduate School of Public Health and Senior Innovation Advisor for the UPMC Insurance Division in their Center for High Value Health Care. "The board was especially impressed with Dr. Carroll's highly visible and impactful track record in translating complex research findings in a way to spark action as well as his passion for the development and mentoring of diverse research talent."
Dr. Carroll is currently a Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Chief Health Officer at Indiana University. He is also Associate Dean for Research Mentoring and the past director of the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Comparative Effectiveness Research at Indiana University School of Medicine. He earned a B.A. in chemistry from Amherst College, an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and an M.S. in health services from the University of Washington School of Public Health, where he was also a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. In addition, he previously served as Vice President for faculty development at the Regenstrief Institute, a medical research and development organization with expertise in electronic medical records and health care data integration. Dr. Carroll's research focuses on the study of information technology to improve pediatric care, decision analysis, and areas of health policy including cost-effectiveness of care and health care financing reform.
The selection of Dr. Carroll further bolsters AcademyHealth's work to improve health and health care for all by moving evidence into policy and practice.
He is an expert science communicator, the author of multiple books, a frequent contributor to the New York Times, co-editor-in-chief of The Incidental Economist, and his publications as well as his Healthcare Triage YouTube series and podcast have educated and entertained millions of readers and viewers.
"Today's challenges demand robust, inclusive evidence that tackles real-world issues. It's imperative that we communicate this knowledge in a manner that is comprehensible, trustworthy, and applicable," said Carroll. "AcademyHealth supports, amplifies, and represents the interests of a diverse and talented field that is perfectly positioned to answer that call. Stepping into this leadership role is a dream opportunity to work with some of the best minds in health research and policy and to make a real difference in American health care."
Dr. Carroll assumes the role of President and CEO from Dr. Lisa Simpson, who will step down in March. Under Dr. Simpson's leadership, AcademyHealth made a public commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, expanded its influence in Washington, and built robust portfolios of work to support innovation in data, workforce, research impact, and learning health systems.
"As a long serving AcademyHealth Board member, I am pleased that the selection committee was sensitive to the importance of choosing a leader who has demonstrated a commitment to evidence generation that advances the fight for health equity across all population groups” said Dr. Reed Tuckson, a cofounder of the Black Coalition Against COVID. "AcademyHealth and its stakeholder community of scholars have provided leadership and practical evidence-based guidance in this increasingly important field and I am confident that Dr. Carroll's leadership, intellect, and communication expertise will help advance this work into the future."
Dr. Carroll will assume his new role on March 18, 2024.

Tim Wise Link Tree Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation’s most prominent antiracist essayists and educators. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise’s antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans’ public housing, and a policy analyst for a children’s advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. Wise is the author of seven books, including his highly-acclaimed memoir, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, as well as Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority, and Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. His forthcoming book, White LIES Matter: Race, Crime and the Politics of Fear in America, will be released in 2018. His essays have appeared on Alternet, Salon, Huffington Post, Counterpunch, Black Commentator, BK Nation, Z Magazine and The Root, which recently named Wise one of the “8 Wokest White People We Know.” Wise has been featured in several documentaries, including “The Great White Hoax: Donald Trump and the Politics of Race and Class in America,” and “White Like Me: Race, Racism and White Privilege in America,” both from the Media Education Foundation. He also appeared alongside legendary scholar and activist, Angela Davis, in the 2011 documentary, “Vocabulary of Change.” In this public dialogue between the two activists, Davis and Wise discussed the connections between issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and militarism, as well as inter-generational movement building and the prospects for social change. Wise is also one of five persons—including President Barack Obama—interviewed for a video exhibition on race relations in America, featured at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. Additionally, his media presence includes dozens of appearances on CNN, MSNBC and NPR, feature interviews on ABC’s 20/20 and CBS’s 48 Hours, as well as videos posted on YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms that have received over 20 million views. His podcast, “Speak Out with Tim Wise,” launched this fall and features weekly interviews with activists, scholars and artists about movement building and strategies for social change. Wise graduated from Tulane University in 1990 and received antiracism training from the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond, in New Orleans. The Stand Up Community Chat is always active with other Stand Up Subscribers on the Discord Platform.

Jonathan Metzl is an acclaimed physician and sociologist who speaks, teaches, and writes on a range of topics including mental illness and gun violence, race and whiteness in America, health and healthcare, and diversity and structural competency in higher education.
Jonathan Metzl is the author of the groundbreaking book, Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland. A New York Times bestseller, the book is an in-depth look at why so many working-class white Americans support politicians whose policies are literally killing them. The book was also the winner of the 2020 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award.
Being a gun violence expert, professor, and psychiatrist is a unique combination that allows Dr. Metzl to speak and write about gun violence in America, and in particular to address stereotypes that link guns with race or mental illness, or that blame mental illness for mass shootings and other gun crimes.
The topic is the focus of Dr. Metzl’s forthcoming, What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms, a highly-anticipated book that, by looking at a racially-charged mass shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, reexamines how we as a nation should address gun violence.
Jonathan M. Metzl MD, PhD, is the Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry, and the director of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his MD from the University of Missouri, MA in humanities/poetics and psychiatric internship/residency from Stanford University, and PhD in American culture from University of Michigan. Winner of the 2020 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Book Award, the 2020 APA Benjamin Rush Award for Scholarship, and a 2010 Guggenheim fellowship, Dr. Metzl has written extensively about the relationships between guns, mass shootings, and mental illness. His books include The Protest Psychosis, Prozac on the Couch, Against Health: How Health Became the New Morality, Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland, and What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms.

He frequently appears on television and podcasts for his brilliant, incisive, and witty political commentary. Born in the Bay Area, California to Pakistani immigrant parents, Ali went to school wearing Husky pants and knowing only three words of English. He graduated from UC Berkeley with an English major and became a licensed attorney. He knows what it feels like to be the token minority in the classroom and the darkest person in a boardroom. The News From EARTH ONE ...23 MINUTES SAM YOUNGMAN STEPS UP TO THE PLACE
Sam is a veteran political campaign reporter and former White House correspondent. Youngman covered the presidential campaigns of 2004, 2008 and 2012, countless U.S. House and Senate races, and the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama while working for The Hill, Reuters and other news organizations. A native of Kentucky, Youngman has a BA in journalism from Western Kentucky University and now lives in Los Angeles.
Today’s Big Stuff is a Monday through Friday newsletter for progressive Americans who want to save their democracy while making fun of people like Donald Trump Jr. and Lauren Boebert who might actually be the same, really dumb person. .
Today’s Big Stuff (TBS) was founded in early 2019 by “Ready for Hillary” creator and Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko and former White House correspondent and veteran campaign reporter Sam Youngman. What started as a small clip service for six people, quickly expanded as thousands of stressed out Americans searched for a news source that tells it how it is — with lots of sick jokes and cuss words.
In 2020, the more than 75,000 members of the Big Stuff community — also known as Sexy Patriots and Big Stufferinoes — mobilized along with 81 million other Americans to send Donald Trump crying back to Mar-a-Lago leaving a trail of urine along the way. And we’re just getting started.
If laughter is the best medicine, then TBS is like an injection of bleach right to the fucking face.

SUPD Presents : Ana Marie Cox "Getting Better" with guest A.J. Daulerio
A.J. Daulerio is the creator of The Small Bow, one of my all-time-favorite newsletters, which he began publishing in 2018. It’s about addiction and recovery and also about family stories, big memories, stubborn feelings, and experiencing grace. The fact that I, a not-sober person, find it so resonant with my experiences suggests some of the expansive excellence you’ll find within. I consider The Small Bow a newsletter about being an accountable, self-aware adult, which is a topic area that is oddly underexplored in … the world?
A.J.’s personal history is pretty well documented. He was an editor at the sports website Deadspin before becoming editor-in-chief of Gawker in 2012. That year, he published clips of a sex tape that featured Hulk Hogan, who ultimately sued Gawker for $100 million and won. The suit ended Gawker as a company and threw Daulerio’s life into utter disarray.
Ana Marie Cox is a political columnist for The New Republic and a culture critic whose writing has appeared in Texas Monthly, Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, and NBC.com. Through 2022, she wrote a “Sober Questioning” column at The Cut. She hosts the science fiction and political science podcast Space the Nation with Dan Drezner (created to fill the hole in their hearts when The Churn was canceled). She’s a regular on the Stephen King podcast The Losers Club (a favorite episode is this one on recovery themes in King’s work). Her memoir, “Just Like Your Mother” — a reported account of addiction, recovery, and intergenerational trauma — will be published by Random House.
She hosted "With Friends Like These," a podcast from Crooked Media from 2017-2022. During the pandemic When we recognized there was a pandemic, she had a regular Instagram Live check-in with John Moe, that archive is here.
She conducted the "Talk" interviews featured in the New York Times Magazine from 2015-17. She was the senior political correspondent for MTV News from 2016 until they pivoted to video. She is on cable news more often than she'd like, which isn’t that often.
Since starting the snarky political blog Wonkette in 2004, she has worked at a bewildering variety of outlets, including Time magazine, GQ, Air America, and The Guardian. Prior to Wonkette, she was an editor at Mother Jones and at the webzine Suck.com. She is the author of the romantic comedy novel Dog Days.
Ana gained attention in 2008 for being an early, enthusiastic adopter of Twitter and quickly amassed a following of 1 million. She is not on Twitter anymore (because Nazis) but you can follow her on Instagram and Bluesky (@anamariecox on both).
You can hear her story about being a suicide attempt survivor here. You may have read that she's a Christian now, too.
After ten years in the frigid Midwest, she returned home to Austin, TX in December 2020. She is accompanied by her dog, Exley, named for the author Fred Exley, her murder kitten, Molly Ivins, named for Molly Ivins, and her cat-shaped void, Bram Stoker, named for Bram Stoker.

On today's show!
Ieva Jusionyte (Ph.D., EMT-P) is a legal and medical anthropologist and a certified emergency medical responder. She is the Watson Family University Associate Professor of International Security and Anthropology at Brown University. Born and raised in Lithuania, Jusionyte earned her B.A. degree in political science from Vilnius University and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from Brandeis University, in Massachusetts. Before coming to Brown, she was John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University.
Jusionyte studies borders, law, and violence, and is the author of three books, including multiple-award winning Threshold: Emergency Responders on the U.S.-Mexico Border (2018), which received the 2019 Victor Turner Prize In Ethnographic Writing and the 2020 SAW Book Prize. Her new book, Exit Wounds: How America’s Guns Fuel Violence Across the Border, is coming out in April 2024.
Jusionyte has held fellowships from the Harvard Radcliffe Institute and the Fulbright program, and her fieldwork and writing have been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Andrew M. Mellon Foundation, the Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center. In addition to research articles published in flagship scholarly journals (Cultural Anthropology, American Anthropologist, Political and Legal Anthropology Review, and others), Jusionyte’s writing has appeared in The Atlantic, the Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, and The Guardian, and she’s been the featured guest on NPR’s “The Takeaway” and “Forum.”
Apart from her scholarly pursuits, Ieva Jusionyte is a trained EMT, paramedic, and wildland firefighter, and spent five years volunteering in fire and rescue departments in Massachusetts, Florida, and Arizona. She lives in Boston.
Ieva Jusionyte explains how firearms made and sold in the United States have played a significant role in the perpetration of violence across the border in Mexico. Mexico strictly regulates the sale of semi-automatic rifles at the federal level, but these weapons are easily available across the border in states like Texas and Arizona. Organized crime groups use funds obtained from illegal drug sales to smuggle weapons purchased in the U.S. into Mexico with devastating consequences. An estimated 200,000 to 500,000 weapons are smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border every year, and 70% of firearms recovered from crime scenes were purchased in the U.S.
Turns the familiar story of trafficking across the US-Mexico border on its head, looking at firearms smuggled south from the United States to Mexico and their ricochet effects. American guns have entangled the lives of people on both sides of the US-Mexico border in a vicious circle of violence. After treating wounded migrants and refugees seeking safety in the United States, anthropologist Ieva Jusionyte boldly embarked on a journey in the opposite direction—following the guns from dealers in Arizona and Texas to crime scenes in Mexico. An expert work of narrative nonfiction, Exit Wounds provides a rare, intimate look into the world of firearms trafficking and urges us to understand the effects of lax US gun laws abroad. Jusionyte masterfully weaves together the gripping stories of people who live and work with guns north and south of the border: a Mexican businessman who smuggles guns for protection, a teenage girl turned trained assassin, two US federal agents trying to stop gun traffickers, and a journalist who risks his life to report on organized crime. Based on years of fieldwork, Exit Wounds expands current debates about guns in America, grappling with US complicity in violence on both sides of the border.

In recent years, Americans have faced a deluge of horrifying developments in politics and culture: stolen elections, fascist rallies, families torn apart and locked away. A common refrain erupts at each new atrocity: This isn’t who we are. In American Rule, Jared Yates Sexton upends those convenient fictions by laying bare the foundational myths at the heart of our collective American imagination. From the very origins of this nation, Americans in power have abused and subjugated others; enabling that corruption are the many myths of American exceptionalism and steadfast values, which are fed to the public and repeated across generations. Working through each era of American growth and change, Sexton weaves together the origins and perpetuation of these narratives still in the public memory, and the acts we have chosen to forget. Stirring, deeply researched, and disturbingly familiar, American Rule is a call to examine our own misconceptions of what it means, and has always meant, to be an American. listen and subscribe to Jared's Podcast subscribe to his substack newsletterWed, 27 Mar 2024 - 1h 17min - 1123 - SUPD 1070 Dr John Duffy Parenting the New Teen in the Age of Anxiety: Raising Happy, Healthy HumansBuy Tickets for the Stand Up PodJam

I'm a native New Yorker and the grandson of immigrants. They inspired in me a deep love for our country and an appreciation that the blessings of America cannot be taken for granted. I've warned about dangers to our democracy for over a decade — in books, columns and on TV. This election is not a drill. Now’s the time for us all to stand up and get off the sidelines. We need to build the broadest possible coalition to defeat Donald Trump, defend democracy and win back the House from his extreme MAGA minions. That’s why I'm running for Congress in New York's 1st district.
If you’ve seen me on CNN or my appearances on Real Time with Bill Maher or the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, you know that I’ve consistently called out the unhinged extremism and poisonous polarization in our politics. I’ve tried to be a voice of reason in unreasonable times, preaching the need to focus on common facts and common ground so we can find solutions to our common problems.
As an author and presidential historian, I’ve written about times when it looked like the American experiment was falling apart – from the founding era to the Civil War. Unifying leadership is essential in divided times. But it also requires citizens rallying together to take responsibility for our country. History shows we need to have confidence when we confront hard times, not give in to division and despair. If we do that, we’ll look back on these challenging times with pride.
I’ve loved the East End of Long Island since I first saw it decades ago, from the historic villages to the big sky that begins with the Pine Barrens to the sweep of beaches that are famous around the world. My wife and I first lived in our house the winter after we got married, both writing books by the fireplace. This is a magic place that's inspired generations of people who are lucky enough to live here.
While New Yorkers are proudly independent, Suffolk County is also defined by a sense of community. Today, our shared values are under attack. Trump’s flunkies see bipartisanship as a problem rather than a solution. Their agenda isn’t conservative, it’s radical — a direct threat to women’s reproductive rights, the environment, and democracy itself. They’re driven by right-wing special interests rather than the national interest.
Abraham Lincoln once said the proper role of government is to do for people what they cannot do so well for themselves on an individual basis. To that end, the next member of Congress needs to fight for federal investment in climate change mitigation, improved transportation, and help for working families that reduces the cost of living while improving their quality of life.
We need to stand up for a woman’s right to choose. We need to have the common sense to understand that public safety is a fundamental civil right. We need to bring back the state and local tax deductions that Trump and the Republicans took away as part of a political stunt — as well as expand the child tax credit. We need to strengthen the guardrails around our democracy, including investing in civic education. Most of all, our next congressman needs to be willing to work with people of good faith to solve the urgent problems we face.
There's one precondition for all of this: the next Democratic nominee needs to be able to win a general election. That hasn’t happened here in over a decade.
Now is one of those times in our nation's history when we're all called to stand up for something bigger than ourselves. We can’t afford to pretend that a presidential nominee who praises dictators and threatens democracy is normal. We need to confront lies with facts and darkness with light. It might not be popular to say this in a primary, but it’s time for us all to put country over party. I’m running for Congress to do just that.

Tim Wise Link Tree starts at 28 mins Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation’s most prominent antiracist essayists and educators.

In five years as counsel, senior counsel, and chief counsel to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Alex Aronson led Senate investigations, oversight, and legislative campaigns to confront anti-democratic judicial influence, ethical misconduct, and abuse of power. A political organizer, civil rights lawyer, and judicial ethics expert, Alex’s work on judicial accountability and right-wing judicial influence has helped elevate these issues to national prominence, laying the groundwork for today’s headlines exposing the Supreme Court’s corruption and extreme judicial activism. Alex most recently served as the Managing Director of the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown Law Center. He was previously an attorney in the Appellate Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, a litigation associate at Covington & Burling LLP, and a law clerk to Judge Albert Diaz on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Before attending Stanford Law School, Alex helped lead a nationally prominent state-based nonprofit focused on improving voting access for underrepresented communities in Oregon, culminating in the nation’s first statewide automatic voter registration law.

David Cay Johnston books are as important to my understanding on American Tax Policy, economics and how our system is rigged by rich elites for rich elites as anything else I have read
David Cay Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and best-selling author.
The Washington Monthly called him as “one of America’s most important journalists.” The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens.
Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump’s was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House.
The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page.
Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times.
Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy.

Admiral James Stavridis is a retired four-star U.S. naval officer. He is currently Partner and Vice Chair, Global Affairs of The Carlyle Group, a global investment firm. He is also 12th Chair of Rockefeller Foundation board. Previously he served for five years as the 12th Dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He led the NATO Alliance in global operations from 2009 to 2013 as 16th Supreme Allied Commander with responsibility for Afghanistan, Libya, the Balkans, Syria, counter piracy, and cyber security. He also served as Commander of U.S. Southern Command, with responsibility for all military operations in Latin America from 2006-2009. He earned more than 50 medals, including 28 from foreign nations in his 37-year military career.
Earlier in his military career he commanded the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet, winning the Battenberg Cup, as well as a squadron of destroyers and a carrier strike group – all in combat. In 2016, he was vetted for Vice President by Hillary Clinton and subsequently invited to Trump Tower to discuss a cabinet position in the Trump Administration.
Admiral Stavridis earned a PhD in international relations and has published twelve books and thousands of articles in leading journals around the world. His books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide and have been published in 22 languages. His 2012 TED talk on global security has over one million views. Admiral Stavridis is a Bloomberg opinion columnist, and Chief International Security Analyst for NBC News, and has tens of thousands of connections on the social networks.
He is proud to have been sanctioned by the Kremlin on November 11, 2022 — in recognition of his enormous contempt for Vladimir Putin’s regime.
2054 Admiral Stavridis, and his co-author Elliot Ackerman look into the future and tell a riveting tale, a sequel to their best-selling novel, 2034.It is twenty years after the catastrophic war between the United States and China that brought down the old American political order. A new party has emerged in the US, one that’s held power for over a decade. Efforts to cement its grip have resulted in mounting violent resistance.
The American president has control of the media, but he is beginning to lose control of the streets. Many fear he’ll stop at nothing to remain in the White House. Suddenly, he collapses in the middle of an address to the nation.
After an initial flurry of misinformation, the administration reluctantly announces his death. A cover-up ensues, conspiracy theories abound, and the country descends into a new type of civil war.
A handful of elite actors from the worlds of computer science, intelligence, and business have a fairly good idea what happened. All signs point to a profound breakthrough in AI, of which the remote assassination of an American President is hardly the most game-changing ramification.
The trail leads to an outpost in the Amazon rainforest, the last known whereabouts of the tech visionary who predicted this breakthrough. As some of the world’s great powers, old and new, state and nonstate alike, struggle to outmaneuver one another in this new great game of scientific discovery, the outcome becomes entangled with the fate of American democracy.
Combining a deep understanding of AI, biotech, and the possibility of a coming singularity, along with their signature geopolitical sophistication, Elliot Ackerman and Admiral James Stavridis have once again written a visionary work. 2054 is a novel that reads like a thriller even as it demands that we consider the trajectory of our society and its potentially calamitous destination.

10 mins I adore Sam Youngman and his daily newsletter, Today's Big Stuff which is my favorite!

Wajahat Ali is a Daily Beast columnist, public speaker, recovering attorney, and tired dad of three cute kids. Get his book Go Back To Where You Came From: And, Other Helpful Recommendations on Becoming American which will be published in January 2022 by Norton. He believes in sharing stories that are by us, for everyone: universal narratives told through a culturally specific lens to entertain, educate and bridge the global divides.
Listen to WAj and DAnielle Moodie on Democracy-ish
He frequently appears on television and podcasts for his brilliant, incisive, and witty political commentary. Born in the Bay Area, California to Pakistani immigrant parents, Ali went to school wearing Husky pants and knowing only three words of English. He graduated from UC Berkeley with an English major and became a licensed attorney. He knows what it feels like to be the token minority in the classroom and the darkest person in a boardroom. Like Spiderman, he’s often had the power and responsibility of being the cultural ambassador of an entire group of people, those who are often marginalized, silenced, or reduced to stereotypes. His essays, interviews, and reporting have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and New York Review of Books. Ali has spoken at many organizations, from Google to Walmart-Jet to Princeton University to the United Nations to the Chandni Indian-Pakistani Restaurant in Newark, California, and his living room in front of his three kids.

Jared Yates Sexton is the author of American Rule: How a Nation Conquered the World but Failed Its People, is the co-host of The Muckrake Political Podcast and subscribe to his substack Dispatches From A Collapsing State Get his new book The Midnight Kingdom: A History of Power, Paranoia, and the Coming Crisis From writer and political analyst Jared Yates Sexton comes a journey through the history of the United States, from the nation’s founding to the twentyfirst century, which examines and debunks the American myths we’ve always told ourselves. Stirring, deeply researched, and disturbingly familiar, American Rule is a call to examine our own misconceptions of what it means, and has always meant, to be an American. listen and subscribe to Jared's Podcast subscribe to his substack newsletterMon, 05 Feb 2024 - 1h 05min - 1084 - 1033 Ophinnegan Saturday's! “American Shield is an all-American tale of duty and determination—beautifully told by an immigrant, a veteran, and a patriot.” —Nancy Pelosi, Speaker Emerita of the United States House of Representatives Set against the extraordinary events of January 6, 2021, Aquilino Gonell’s inspirational memoir is rooted in the joys and struggles of the immigrant experience that have long defined the American experiment Aquilino Gonell came to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a young boy. Although he spoke no English, he dedicated himself to his adopted land, striving for the American dream. Determined to be a success story, he joined the army to pay for college. He saw action in Iraq and returned home with PTSD. Believing in the promise of our government, he focused on healing himself and supporting his family. His hard work paid off when he landed a coveted position with the United States Capitol Police and rose to the rank of sergeant. January 6, 2021, changed everything. When insurrectionists stormed the Capitol, Gonell bravely faced down the mob attempting to thwart the peaceful transfer of power. The brutal injuries he sustained that day would end his career in law enforcement. But when some of the very people he put his life on the line to protect downplayed or denied the truth of that day, he chose to speak out against the injustice done to him and the country. Chronicling what it means to live a life of conviction, one that adheres to the best ideas of our democracy, American Shield is a bold testament to the power of truth, justice, and accountability from a highly decorated officer and immigrant who exemplifies the greatest aspirations of a grateful nation.

That same year, he went to Daytona Beach to teach at Turie T. Small Elementary School, where more than 90 percent of the students lived in poverty. The music teacher soon found his voice as an advocate and has worked ever since on behalf of public school students, schools, teachers and education staff professionals.
“I could not read when I was in first grade,” Spar recalls. “I struggled in school. But the educators in my life were empowered to make my success a priority, and that’s just what they did. I want the same world for my family and for all of Florida’s children.”
At Turie T. Small, Spar served as school-improvement chair for two years and as a union steward for seven years. He would go on to become president of his local union in May 2003 and led Volusia United Educators until he was elected FEA vice president in 2018. In September 2020, he was named FEA president after the previous president, Fedrick C. Ingram, was elected secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers.
During his 15 years leading the Volusia union, Spar negotiated 14 contracts, handled numerous grievances and arbitrations, and spent many long hours advocating for members and working families.
In 2017, he led the merger of the Volusia Teachers Organization and the Volusia Educational Support Association to create Volusia United Educators(link is external). The new union has nearly 3,800 members and represents more than 6,000 teachers, paraprofessionals and office specialists in Volusia County Schools.
Throughout his career, Spar has served on committees and task forces for the AFT. At FEA, he spent eight years on the executive cabinet. He also has served on the executive board of the Florida AFL-CIO(link is external) and was secretary-treasurer of the organization from January 2016 until September 2020.
Spar’s wife, Vernell, is also a public school music teacher. The Spars have two daughters; both girls attend public schools.

Tim Wise Link Tree starts at 8 mins Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation’s most prominent antiracist essayists and educators. Joshua Green is a national correspondent for Bloomberg Businessweek. He has also written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Vanity Fair. Green regularly appears on CNN, MSNBC, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, and PBS’s Washington Week and Frontline.
From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Devil’s Bargain comes the revelatory inside story of the uprising within the Democratic Party, of the economic populists led by Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In his classic book Devil’s Bargain, Joshua Green chronicled how the forces of economic populism on the right, led by the likes of Steve Bannon, turned Donald Trump into their flawed but powerful vessel. In The Rebels, he gives an epic account of the long struggle that has played out in parallel on the left, told through an intimate reckoning with the careers of the three political figures who have led the charge most prominently. Based on remarkable inside sourcing and razor-sharp analysis, The Rebels uses the grand narrative of a political party undergoing tumult and transformation to tell an even larger story about the fate of America. For many years, as Green recounts, the Democrats made their bed with Wall Street and big tech, relying on corporate money for electioneering and embracing the worldview that technological and financial innovation and globalization were a powerful net good, a rising tide lifting all boats. Yes, there were howls of pain, but they were written off by most of the elites as the moaning of sore losers mired in the past. There were always some Democratic politicians representing the old labor base who resisted the new dispensation, but these figures never made it very far on a national level. For one thing, they didn’t have the money. But as income inequality ballooned, widening the gulf between the wealthy elite and everyone else, pressures began to build. With the 2008 crisis, those forces finally erupted into plain sight, turning this book’s protagonists into national icons. At its heart, The Rebels tells the riveting human story of the rise and fight of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from the financial crisis on, as outrage over the unfairness of the American system formed a flood tide of political revolution. That same tide that would sweep Trump into office was blunted on the left, as the Democratic party found itself riven by culture war issues between its centrists and its progressives. But the winds behind economic populism still howl at gale force. Whether the Democrats can bridge their divisions and home in on a vision that unites the party, and perhaps even the country, in the face of the most violently deranged political landscape since the Civil War will be the ultimate test of the legacies of all three characters. A masterful account of one of the defining political stories of our age, The Rebels cements Joshua Green’s stature at the first rank of American writers explaining how we’ve arrived at this pass and what lies ahead.

Thu, 04 Jan 2024 - 1h 03min - 1061 - SUPD 1010 The News and Today's Big Stuff Sam Youngman
Sam Youngman is brilliant and hilarious and we start after my news update at 25 mins
Stand Up is a daily podcast that I book, host, edit, post and promote new episodes with brilliant guests every day. Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 700 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous soulsI fucking love Sam Youngman and his daily newsletter which is my favorite
Sam Youngman is a veteran political campaign reporter and former White House correspondent.

Mon, 01 Jan 2024 - 58min - 1058 - SUPD 1007 Wajahat Ali on what caused the Civil War and Mid Life Challenges

Tim Wise Link Tree 24 mins Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation’s most prominent antiracist essayists and educators. From Anya Substack.....
The Golden Hour has a bigger agenda than just you and your family. Children are a disadvantaged and disenfranchised group who deserve agency and voice. Generational justice is the lens of looking at challenges facing humanity from the perspective of the young and future generations. And, it turns out, a child-centric society is better for just about everyone. For one thing, it’s more fun!
This is a space for truthful, courageous conversation.
I am a journalist and author with a solid track record of being prescient about changes in technology, institutions, and society in general. I’ve been covering tech & climate change, social movements, mental health, education and parenting for almost two decades.
I’m a journalist who cares about young people and is fascinated by the future. That’s led me to cover education, technology, and now climate change. I started at 25 with the book Generation Debt about young people’s economic struggles. I’ve published four more books, most recently The Stolen Year: How Covid Changed Children’s Lives, And Where We Go Now. I spent 8 years covering education for NPR, where I launched Life Kit: Parenting, a successful podcast series about difficult conversations, and got to co-star with Cookie Monster in a video, which was a career and life highlight.
I quit my job at NPR in 2022 to focus on the intersection of kids and climate. I now work with the Aspen Institute’s This Is Planet Ed initiative and the Climate Mental Health Network.
I live in Brooklyn with my husband and two children and I’m extremely serious about having fun—joy is part of my spiritual practice. I go out dancing a few times a month and make fun costumes for Burning Man and Mardi Gras. I also garden, cook, go jogging and other extremely normal mom stuff.
