In this episode of the Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, I break down another 0DTE XSP trade that I was able to convert into a risk-free position—but this time, I spend more time on the market analysis behind the entries.
I’ll show how I used Historical Net Gamma Exposure (GEX) to identify an important SPX gamma level around 7,600, look for potential mean reversion, and time multiple credit spread entries. We’ll walk through how the trade evolved from an in-the-money call credit spread, into a reverse iron condor, and eventually into a position with multiple potential profit zones and no remaining downside risk beyond commissions.
We’ll also discuss why I’m experimenting with XSP for these trades, how gamma levels can change throughout the trading day, and why I view GEX as another indicator—not something that should be traded blindly.
In this episode: Trading 0DTE XSP before the regular market open Using Historical GEX to identify potential SPX levels Turning a profitable credit spread into a reverse iron condor Adding an iron butterfly around a major gamma level Creating wider profit zones instead of simply closing a winning trade Why gamma exposure is context—not a standalone trading signal Managing a volatile 0DTE trading day while reducing risk
I’ll also be speaking about SPX 0DTE options trading at the Traders Expo / Orlando MoneyShow, October 5–7. If you’re attending, I’d love to meet you in person. Options involve risk and are not suitable for all investors.

Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 09min - 197 - 197: XSP 0DTE Strategy: Better Risk-Reward With Credit Spreads
In this week’s Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, I break down an XSP 0DTE trade I entered at the market open and how I was able to turn the position into a risk-free trade after the market moved in my favor.
We’ll walk through the trade structure, why I started with an in-the-money call credit spread, and how adding the opposing spread converted the position into an Iron Condor with no remaining downside risk.
I also take a first look at CBOE’s newer Magnificent 10 Index (MGTN), an equal-weighted index featuring the Magnificent 7 plus Broadcom, Palantir, and AMD. We’ll look at why cash-settled index options are interesting for traders, along with the biggest issue with MGTN right now: liquidity.
Plus, this week’s episode covers:
• The current SPX market setup and important gamma levels
• What I’m watching as the market trades below 7700
• This week’s major economic and employment reports
• Tuesday’s SPX Opening Range Breakout statistics
• The return of the X Files segment
The goal is always the same: use data, backtesting, and market statistics to find practical ways to trade the S&P 500 and index options.

What happens when you stop looking for the “best” SPX trading strategy and start thinking in terms of a portfolio of strategies?
In Episode 196, I break down four mechanical SPX strategies based purely on the math — without focusing on the actual strategy or setup.
We compare:
Trade frequencyWin rateAverage winnerAverage loserExpectancyRisk/rewardThe differences are significant. One strategy wins just 35% of the time, while others win more than 70%. But higher win rates come with their own trade-offs, including larger average losses.
The interesting part comes when we combine all four.
Instead of relying on one strategy that might go weeks without a trade or experience a losing streak, the different mathematical profiles can complement each other and produce a much smoother overall P&L curve.
The goal isn't necessarily to find the highest win rate or the perfect strategy. It's to build a collection of positive-expectancy trades that can work together over time.
Would you trade a strategy with only a 35% win rate if it improved the overall portfolio?
Mon, 24 Aug 2026 - 10min - 195 - 195: The Friday-to-Monday SPX Edge
In this week's Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, we're looking at an interesting SPX pattern: Mondays have produced the strongest average S&P 500 returns so far in 2026.
Here's the video version: https://youtu.be/mM8y3koyL5A
That lines up with a rules-based strategy I've recently added back into the Alpha Crunching trade setups — a Friday 3DTE SPX put credit spread designed to take advantage of bullish market conditions heading into the weekend.

Mon, 17 Aug 2026 - 08min - 194 - 194: Does Gamma Move the S&P 500? What SPX Traders Should Know
In Episode 194 of the Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, we take a data-driven look at the S&P 500, SPX options, gamma levels, opening range breakouts, and a mechanical 0DTE Iron Condor strategy.
We start with lumber prices after an 11-day losing streak and discuss what falling lumber prices may—or may not—be signaling about housing and the broader economy.
Then we turn to SPX and an important question for options traders: Do gamma levels lead the market, or does price lead gamma? We look at call walls, put walls, the gamma flip, and why I view gamma levels as useful context rather than a standalone prediction of where the S&P 500 is headed.
We also review some interesting SPX 0DTE Opening Range Breakout (ORB) data. Tuesday's 30-minute opening range has recently shown strong historical results following both upside and downside breakouts, creating some interesting possibilities for credit spreads and other intraday options strategies.
Finally, I share a mechanical 0DTE SPX Iron Condor strategy we've been trading and tracking at Alpha Crunching, including how the setup works and where you can review the backtest and strategy details.

In Part 3 of this series on building an automated SPX 0DTE portfolio, we explore the final strategy we've added to our growing mix of high-frequency, positive expectancy trades: the 30-minute Opening Range Breakout (ORB) Call Debit Spread.
In previous episodes, we discussed the Trend Spread Engine (TSE) credit spreads and the End-of-Day Put Debit Spread (PDS). In this episode, we look at how the ORB strategy adds another layer of diversification by introducing a different combination of win rate, risk/reward, and market conditions.

More About the Opening Range Breakout (ORB) Strategy
The Opening Range Breakout (ORB) is one of the most widely used day trading strategies across stocks, futures, and options markets. The concept is simple: traders allow the market to establish an initial trading range after the open and then look to enter positions when price breaks above or below that range, attempting to capture momentum and trend continuation throughout the trading session.
The theory behind the ORB is that the opening period often contains important information about institutional positioning, overnight sentiment, and market direction. By waiting for the market to define a range before entering, traders attempt to avoid some of the noise and volatility that typically occurs immediately after the open.
There are many variations of the ORB strategy. Traders may use opening ranges of 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes and can trade breakouts in either direction using shares, futures, or options strategies. Additional filters such as trend direction, moving averages, volatility measures, volume, or market internals are often incorporated to improve performance and adapt the strategy to different market conditions.
In this episode, we discuss how the ORB concept can be applied to SPX 0DTE options trading, how different risk/reward profiles impact performance, and why systematic execution and automation can play an important role when trading high-frequency strategies.
Mon, 29 Jun 2026 - 14min - 189 - 189: The Truth About Win Rate and Risk Reward (Part 2)
In this episode, Eric continues the Automated Strategy Pipeline series by tackling one of the most misunderstood topics in trading: win rate.
Many traders evaluate a strategy based on a single number: the percentage of winning trades. But a high win rate alone doesn't tell you whether a strategy is profitable, scalable, or even worth trading.
Using real examples from his own SPX trading portfolio, Eric explains why win rate, average win, average loss, expectancy, and risk reward all work together to determine a strategy's long-term performance.
Topics discussed include:
• Why win rate by itself can be misleading
• The relationship between win rate, average win, and average loss
• Why a 30% win rate strategy can still have positive expectancy
• The differences between credit spreads and debit spreads
• How combining strategies with different risk/reward profiles may smooth portfolio returns
• The role of trade frequency in systematic trading
• Why automation makes it easier to consistently execute multiple strategies
• How Alpha Crunching's new EOD Put Debit Spread complements the existing TSE 0DTE Credit Spread strategy
Eric also discusses how he is building a portfolio of automated SPX strategies designed to work together rather than relying on a single edge or market environment.

Many traders spend all their time looking for the next great trade. But what happens after you find an edge?
In this episode, Eric discusses the concept of building an automated strategy pipeline and why finding a profitable strategy is only the beginning. You'll learn why markets constantly evolve, why every strategy has strengths and weaknesses, and why relying on a single trading system can create unnecessary risk.
Topics discussed include:
• Why successful traders should always be researching and testing new ideas
• The benefits of automation beyond simply saving time
• How Alpha Crunching's TSE 0DTE credit spread strategy fits into a larger portfolio approach
• Why trade frequency matters when building confidence in a strategy
• Credit spreads vs. debit spreads and diversifying risk/reward profiles

Trading in a community gives you perspective, shared ideas, and support—far better than trying to figure it all out on your own.
In this episode, Eric O’Rourke is joined by Brian Terry to break down how they’re navigating a highly volatile, headline-driven market. With uncertainty tied to global events and sharp intraday reversals, both emphasize that sometimes the best trade is no trade at all—and that sitting in cash can be a strategic edge.
Brian shares how he’s staying active by focusing on strength in the energy sector, using diagonal call strategies and poor man’s covered calls on oil-related stocks showing relative strength. Rather than changing strategy structures, he explains how simply rotating into stronger sectors can maintain a bullish or neutral approach even in a weak market.
Eric contrasts this with his SPX-focused approach, where many bullish credit spread strategies are no longer triggering. He discusses why “flipping” strategies (e.g., turning put spreads into call spreads) doesn’t always work, based on backtesting results. Instead, he’s adapting through shorter-duration trades, including 0DTE trend-based spreads, while being more selective—especially on volatile gap days.
Check this Video: https://youtu.be/WLNR_5wf6YI
They also dive into:
The impact of extreme intraday reversals on short-term tradingWhy timing (like the 10:30am window) can improve probabilitiesAdjusting position sizing and exposure during uncertain conditionsUsing moving averages (like the 100 and 200-day) to manage longer-term portfoliosThe challenge of knowing when to re-enter after going to cashThe episode wraps with a key reminder: markets like this require flexibility, patience, and discipline. You don’t need to force trades—wait for conditions to improve and protect capital so you’re ready when opportunities return.
Mon, 30 Mar 2026 - 19min - 180 - 180: Trading Wide Iron Condors in High Volatility (with Brian Terry)
In this episode, Eric O’Rourke is joined by Brian Terry from the Conservative Options Income Network (COIN) to break down a recent SPX iron condor trade that caught attention for its unusually wide structure.
With volatility elevated and market conditions shifting, Brian walks through how he constructed a 7-day iron condor nearly 600 points wide—while still keeping defined risk and a high probability of success. The discussion covers how iron condors work, why wider strikes can make sense in high VIX environments, and how to think about risk, adjustments, and profit targets.
They also dive into:
- Why Brian targets ~50% profit and exits earlyHow to manage trades when one side gets challengedThe pros and cons of rolling vs. closing one sideUsing iron condors as a “campaign” strategy in volatile marketsThe role of discretion vs. systematic trading
Eric also shares how this type of neutral strategy can complement Alpha Crunching systems, especially when bullish setups are paused during bearish market conditions.
If you’ve ever wondered how to trade iron condors in volatile markets—or how to stay active when directional strategies aren’t triggering—this episode is packed with practical insights.

In this episode, Eric O’Rourke breaks down a practical question many options traders ask: what does it actually take to make $100 per day selling options?
Using real SPX credit spread examples, Eric walks through different ways traders approach profit targets—from letting spreads expire worthless to taking profits early—and why focusing only on percentage returns (like 50%) can be misleading. He explains how spread width, contract sizing, commissions, and capital requirements all play a role in reaching consistent daily income goals.
You’ll hear the trade-offs between:
- Selling narrower vs. wider spreadsTaking profits early vs. holding to expirationIncreasing contracts vs. increasing risk per tradeMoving further out of the money for higher probability setups
Eric also shares how he’s been adjusting his own approach, including using wider spreads and targeting fixed dollar profits per trade, along with how tools like the Trend Spread Engine (TSE) fit into decision-making.
If you're looking to better understand the mechanics behind generating consistent income with SPX credit spreads—without overcomplicating the strategy—this episode lays out the key concepts.

Thu, 19 Mar 2026 - 07min - 178 - 178: Conditions vs Signals for Credit Spread Trading
In this episode of the Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, Eric explains an idea that comes up frequently in the SPX trading community: the difference between market conditions and trading signals—and why that distinction matters when trading credit spreads.
Many traders use indicators like moving averages or trend indicators strictly for buy or sell signals, such as a moving average crossover. But when trading premium strategies like credit spreads, Eric explains why it can be more effective to evaluate market conditions instead. For example, a simple condition like the 5-day moving average being above the 10-day moving average can indicate a bullish environment without waiting for the actual crossover signal.
Eric also shares how this concept applies to the 0DTE Trend Spread Engine, where trend is checked at set time intervals throughout the day to determine whether conditions favor bullish or bearish credit spreads—without waiting for the indicator to flip signals.
Because credit spreads benefit from time decay (theta) and only require the market to stay generally on the correct side of the trade, focusing on conditions rather than perfect timing can allow traders to increase trade frequency, trade smaller, and stay aligned with the broader market environment.

Tue, 17 Mar 2026 - 05min - 177 - 177: How I’m Trading This Volatile SPX Market Right Now
Before we jump in — if you want to see the tools mentioned in this episode in action, including the 0DTE Trend Spread Engine and the 1DTE Bias indicator, visit AlphaCrunching.com to learn more and join the trading community.
In this episode, Eric discusses the recent market breakdown and how current geopolitical tensions, volatility, and upcoming economic data are shaping trading decisions. With SPX experiencing sharp moves and uncertainty rising, he walks through how he’s adapting his approach and managing trades during this environment.
A major theme is market structure and key levels. Right now, gamma positioning appears scattered across large round numbers, suggesting institutional traders themselves are uncertain. As a result, Eric is watching major SPX levels every 100 points (6600, 6700, 6800, etc.) as potential support and resistance zones while the market “ping-pongs” between them.
He also reviews the macro backdrop driving volatility, including geopolitical tensions, sector rotation away from AI stocks, and a busy week of economic data with CPI, jobless claims, and PCE all ahead. These events could determine whether the market stabilizes or pushes lower toward the mid-6600s.
Eric then explains how he’s positioning his portfolio:
- Maintaining a core SPY position while actively trading around itUsing covered calls and rolling positions to manage downside while leaving room for upside participationPausing many longer-duration spreads due to increased uncertainty
Much of the current trading activity has shifted toward shorter-term strategies, particularly SPX 0DTE trades.
The episode highlights how the AlphaCrunching 0DTE Trend Spread Engine (TSE) is being used in practice. The system ranks the best times of day for 0DTE spreads based on historical performance and now posts the short strike levels from the highest-probability trades. These levels act as data-backed areas where SPX has historically stayed away from by expiration, allowing traders to use them as reference points for structuring credit spreads.
Eric also introduces progress on the 1DTE Bias indicator, an experimental tool that evaluates market regimes using factors like trend behavior and VIX conditions. By comparing current conditions to historical matches over the past three years, the tool estimates the probability of the market closing higher the next day. The recent volatility spike has highlighted one of the challenges of building this model: unusual market conditions sometimes produce very small historical sample sizes.
The episode closes with an important reminder about patience and risk management. In volatile environments, it’s often better to wait for conditions to settle rather than forcing trades. Sometimes the best position is simply holding cash until clearer opportunities emerge.
Overall, this discussion provides a real-time look at how Eric is navigating a volatile market using a combination of macro awareness, probability-based levels, and adaptive options strategies.

👉 Read the Trend Spread Engine article here:
https://www.alphacrunching.com/blog/spx-0dte-options-trading-using-the-trend-spread-engine-to-find-high-probability-intraday-windows
In this episode, I expand on a concept Brian Terry shared in Episode 174 about entering iron condors one side at a time — waiting for rallies to sell calls and pullbacks to sell puts.
That idea of patience and better positioning really resonated with me… and I’ve started applying it directly to my SPX 0DTE trading.
After launching the Trend Spread Engine in Episodes 172 and 173, we’ve been tracking every 0DTE credit spread posted throughout the day and compiling weekly performance reports. We’re seeing certain morning time blocks show 90%+ expiration win rates.
But here’s the key:
High probability doesn’t mean you need to enter immediately.
Instead of chasing the alert the moment it posts, I’m marking those statistically backed strike levels on my chart and waiting for volatility to give me a better entry — either higher strikes or better credit.
In today’s volatile market, patience can mean:
- Better distance from priceHigher probability positioningImproved risk/reward structureLess emotional trading
This applies whether you’re trading 0DTE, 7DTE, or 30+ days to expiration.
If you trade credit spreads, this episode will help you think differently about execution and timing — especially in fast-moving markets.

Tue, 17 Feb 2026 - 08min - 175 - 175: Breakeven Iron Condor Strategy (7DTE)
In this episode, I’m joined by Brian Terry to break down a breakeven iron condor strategy he’s actively trading right now.
Brian walks through how he enters the call side and put side separately, targeting equal credits on each side with 7 days to expiration. The key twist? He uses a 200% stop on each side, which means if one side gets stopped out, the trade is designed to be roughly breakeven overall.
We talk through:
- Why separating entries can improve flexibilityHow the 200% stop changes the risk profileWhy this works well on SPX, and how newer traders can adapt it to SPY for smaller sizeThe mindset behind trading income strategies defensively, not emotionally
Brian runs the Conservative Options Income Network (COIN) over at https://stockmarketoptionstrading.net, where you can start a 14-day free trial and see his real trades, including the strategy discussed in this episode.

In this episode, I’m joined by Dan to talk about trading earnings and a tool he uses called Earnings Watcher. In this episode, we review some early backtest results from AlphaCrunching.com's newly launched 0DTe Trend Spread Engine (TSE).
We're only 3 weeks into the stats but taking 0DTE trend spreads during the lunch hour at 12pm over the past 3 weeks has won 100% of the time. We're not expecting this type of performance to last forever but seeing this hot spots of high performance based on time of day entry is revealing some edge most traders are missing.

Mon, 05 Jan 2026 - 14min - 172 - 172: The 0DTE Trend Spread Engine: Building in Public
In this episode, Eric breaks down the core ideas behind the 0DTE Trend Spread Engine (TSE) and how it fits into the broader Alpha Crunching philosophy of trading probabilities, not predictions.
The TSE is built to systematically identify high-probability SPX credit spread ideas by combining intraday trend, time-based structure, and defined risk. Rather than reacting to every move, the focus is on stacking small statistical edges and letting data—not emotions—drive decisions.
This episode also explains why strike selection and credits can vary, why these are trade ideas (not alerts), and how Alpha Crunching approaches options trading like an insurance business built on consistency and process.

✅ Entry criteria and credit received (~$3.25 on 10-wide wings)
✅ How to calculate max profit and max loss
✅ My profit-taking plan (~30%) and adjustment ideas if SPX moves sharply
✅ Why higher VIX levels can offer better Iron Condor setups

In this episode of the Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, Eric dives into the concept of expectancy—a key metric that blends win rate, average win size, and average loss size into one number that helps traders understand whether a strategy has a real edge over the long run.

Eric also shares updates inside Alpha Crunching: the Trade Ideas tab now includes expectancy alongside win rate, giving subscribers deeper insight when sorting potential setups for the week.

🎁 50% OFF: Option Omega (code SMOT) • Alpha Crunching (code SPX50) — grab both and build + automate your SPX playbook.
This episode is a fun, nerdy deep-dive with Troy and Matt from Option Omega. We cover how to build realistic backtests for options (especially 0DTE) and when it makes sense to automate entries/exits so you’re not chained to the screen. We also walk through a few trade structures—including the much-misunderstood Reverse Iron Condor (RIC)—and talk about portfolio-level thinking: position sizing, diversification across edges, and why “one-lotting” more often than not can save your sanity.
What we cover:
Why end-of-day data lies for options backtests and how 1-minute, intraday pricing changes the conclusions (stops, profit targets, and whether you even got filled). The rise of 0DTE and why intraday realism matters way more than it did for 45–90 DTE trades. The “Punisher”: stress-testing backtests with slippage, fills, and tougher assumptions so results hold up in live trading.Liquidity matters: why OO focuses on top tickers (SPX, SPY, QQQ, etc.), and the pros/cons of instruments like XSP.RICs (Reverse Iron Condors) as long-gamma plays: when long premium + the right signal can still have positive expectancy, and sizing so a few losses don’t nuke the account.Credit-spread philosophy: structure ≠ edge. Edge comes from when you put it on (signals), then you pick the simplest structure that monetizes that edge.Automation better than willpower: broker-resting stops, time windows, and signal-gated entries so your plan runs even when you’re walking the dog.Sizing & psychology: allocations as a strategy; why many traders should downshift to one-lots more often; diversifying edges (theta harvest + long-gamma + price-action) on the same ticker. My ASD signal (Alpha Crunching): using Average Strength Deviation as a weekly, day-of-week filter; combining ASD with simple MAs/EMAs for “aggressive” ATM put-credit spreads; converting those rules into hands-off automations.Broker support today: Schwab, Tastytrade, Tradier (IB not currently supported for U.S. retail cloud API).Key takeaways:
Backtests need intraday realism or they’re just stories.Structure is just the container; edge = timing + conditions. If your edge is “market stability”, credit spreads monetize it better than naked long calls.Automation lets you run more strategies with smaller per-trade risk and fewer emotional mistakes.Test harshly (slippage, fills, stops) so live results rhyme with backtests.Resources & links:

Tue, 25 Mar 2025 - 11min - 144 - 144: A Simple Bear Market Hedging Strategy
📢 Read the full blog post with charts and performance data:
https://www.alphacrunching.com/blog/bear-market-hedging-strategy
Summary:
In this episode of the Stock Market Options Trading Podcast, we break down a bear market hedging strategy that just triggered given the current market conditions.
Right now, SPX is down about 10%—a textbook correction—but it’s also trading below the 200-day moving average, which we’re using as a key reference point for this strategy. While some traders debate whether this qualifies as a bear market, the real focus is on objective, rule-based trading to avoid emotional decisions during volatile times.
We discuss:
✅ How this strategy works – using SPX bear call spreads with a 14-day expiration
✅ Why it only triggers in bearish conditions – avoiding the drag of constant hedging
✅ Performance since 2017 – with a 77% win rate and key takeaways from past bear markets
✅ The importance of avoiding overtrading – staying mechanical when markets turn volatile
This isn’t an everyday trade—it only triggers in bearish conditions—but when it does, it has historically provided an edge in downturns without sacrificing gains in bullish markets.

Mon, 09 Dec 2024 - 10min - 133 - 133: SPX vs. SPY: 10 Major Differences
10 Major Differences Between SPY and SPX Options
SPY and SPX give you exposure to the S&P 500, but these options have key differences you should know before getting started.
Paying Dividends
SPX does not pay a dividend, but SPY does. Dividends may not seem relevant because someone buying options does not own shares. You only receive the dividend if you own the shares before the ex-dividend date.
But the dividend is relevant for options traders. Some traders may exercise SPY options early to be on time for the dividend. An ex-dividend also lowers the stock price, which will affect your option’s value. If SPY offers a $1.60 dividend this quarter, SPY’s share price will decrease by $1.60 on the ex-dividend date. Options do not get adjusted downward proportionally to the ex-dividend, but a decrease in share price hurts calls and helps puts.
Trading Style
Traders can use two approaches for their options trading. SPY options use the American style of option trading, while SPX options use the European trading style.
Investment Cost
Several factors influence an option’s cost, including the underlying asset’s price. Because the S&P 500 is roughly 10 times the price of SPY, the options for SPX require a higher investment. An investor would have to purchase 10 SPY calls with $400 strike prices to get the same exposure as one SPX call with a $4,000 strike price.
Settlement Price
If a SPY option gets exercised, shares exchange hands. A call holder will receive 100 shares, while someone with a put can sell their 100 shares. Instead of letting traders exchange shares, SPX options involve cash. SPX options give traders the cash equivalent of their in-the-money profits plus the initial investment. If the option expires worthless, the trader gets nothing back.
Expiration
SPY options follow the American trading style, which means options expire on Fridays at 4 p.m. Eastern. Some ETFs like SPY have multiple expiration dates each week, but most stocks expire after Friday’s close.
SPX options follow a different model, the European trading style. Most European options also expire on Friday’s close, but the third Friday of each month presents an exception. Options that expire on the third Friday don’t benefit from Friday’s price movements. These options stop trading after Thursday’s close. You cannot exercise a SPX option and have to wait for the settlement date to receive cash (SPX options do not involve shares changing hands), but you can exercise a SPY option at any time.
Contract
Options traders can only get involved with two types of contracts: calls and puts. These derivatives enable various options trading strategies you can use for SPY and SPX options. Both options let you engage in calls and puts.
Value
SPX options hold a higher value than SPY options because of the difference in share prices. A trader needs 10 SPY options to have the same value as one SPX option. While SPX options hold more value per contract, they both produce similar returns. If the S&P 500 increases by 1%, the SPY will also increase by roughly 1%. A 1% increase in the underlying asset’s price will produce nearly identical percentage gains for SPX and SPY options.
Liquidity
SPX and SPY both have great liquidity. They are among the most in-demand options, with generous bid-ask spreads. Other options with less liquidity have wider spreads, which makes it more difficult to realize profits. If you want to quickly enter and exit options within seconds without getting burned by the spread, SPY and SPX options are great choices.
Tax Treatment
SPX options are better for taxes and can help you save money because of how capital gains work. Sixty percent of your gains from SPX options get treated as long-term capital gains, while the remaining 40% of gains are treated as short-term gains. SPY options do not have the same luxury because all of their gains get treated as short-term gains. Short-term gains get taxed at a higher level than long-term gains, so you can end up with a higher tax bill if you trade SPY options.
Flexibility
SPY and SPX both have more flexibility than other options. While many options only expire on Fridays, you can trade SPY and SPX options that expire on any weekday. You can trade days to expiration (DTE) and zero days to expiration (0DTE) options on any day of the week if you desire. While each options trader has their own risk tolerance, SPY and SPX options offer the greatest flexibility to meet your needs.

Fri, 06 Dec 2024 - 07min - 132 - 132: Options Position Sizing Case Study
In this special Thanksgiving episode of the SMOT podcast, I want to take a moment to say thank you for being a dedicated listener. Wishing you and your family the very best this holiday season!
Today, we’re diving into a case study on options position sizing. I recently posted a video on YouTube where I compared the same trading strategy across different account sizes and allocations to see how position sizing can dramatically impact performance. In this episode, you’ll hear the audio from that video.
Here's the link: https://youtu.be/ThDgXklMG40
If you’re a visual learner, I’ve included a link to the YouTube video so you can check out the performance metrics in detail—it’s only 12 minutes long!
Before we jump in, a quick ask: If you’re enjoying the SMOT podcast, I’d be thrilled if you left a review on Apple or Spotify. It takes just 30 seconds, and it means the world.
Now, let’s get into this case study on optimizing your options position sizing!

Mon, 11 Nov 2024 - 17min - 130 - 130: GOOGL Earnings Trade Success
In this episode, I walk through my recent GOOGL earning trade in which I held shares into the earnings event but added a risk free collar trade for protection. As you'll hear, the collar trade caps my upside but gives some downside protection in case the stock were to rollover.
At the time of this posting, GOOGL was up a little over 5% on an earnings pop and I've since exited most of the trade for profit.

In this episode, I discuss something about vertical spreads that options education books typically don't include. We'll explore comparing buying a single call option vs. buying a long call spread aka. bull put spread through the lens of trading strategy.
The primary point is that there is a level of consistency with vertical spreads over single options in that the cost of the spread is relatively the same over time whereas the cost of the call can vary due to volatility. This can make it harder to allocate a consistent amount of capital to a strategy.
The downside with vertical debit spreads of course is that you gaining consistency but at the cost of capping your upside gains if the market moves heavily in your favor.

Fri, 23 Aug 2024 - 14min - 124 - 124: S&P 500 Navigator: Short Term Bearish Thesis and Trade Idea

In this episode, we'll talk about a trade idea to express a short term bearish thesis of SPX making a move to its 200sma over the next week or so.
The key takeaway is that you are able to create trade structures with options to express you r idea of what you think the market may do or not do over a certain period of time. As long as you are ok with the risk reward, then you can express that opinion and then find out later if you are right or wrong.

Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 13min - 114 - 114: What is Options Net Flow?
In this episode, I'll briefly explain what options net flow is. In short, many of the options flow providers now offer some version of options net flow which is a graphical way to gauge the options sentiment of a stock or index. I find this mush more useful and applicable compare to the traditional overwhelm of a grid based data feed.

Wed, 20 Mar 2024 - 10min - 111 - 111: To Hold or Not to Hold to Expiration
In this episode, we'll try to answer the question of whether or not holding to expiration is better than taking profits early when being a net options seller. We'll explore this question by comparing a recently posted SPX Weekly Options Strategy from the SPX Income Masterclass.
We'll compare holding the trades to expiration from 2021-2023 vs. taking profits a 50% of the max gain. As we'll discuss, strike selection and win rate can be determining factors in deciding when to take profits as part of the strategy you are trading.

In this episode, I detail a recent Iron Condor trade I ended up rolling up and out due to bullish stock market conditions.
I'll explain how I was able to recenter the Iron Condor around the current price without having to add any more risk to the trade. This allowed me to stay in the trade longer so I could profit from time decay.

Best Options Strategy For Small Accounts and Beginners
In this episode, we'll revisit what I think is the best options strategy for small accounts and beginners. We're going replay Episode 2 of the podcast from March 2020 where I explained the idea of selling put credit spreads similar to how an insurance company would sell car insurance.

Tue, 24 Oct 2023 - 31min - 99 - SPX TTR Options Strategy (Beta)
In this episode, we'll cover a new strategy that uses the TTR from https://AlphaCrunching.com
The TTR = Tomorrow's Triumph Rate which shows the historical percentage of times SPX has closed higher the next day over the past two months.
This strategy is geared towards trading SPX options that expire the following day. By trading 1DTE options, 3DTE on Friday, you can avoid any PDT issues but also increase the number of high probability trades using the TTR to gain an edge in the market.
More research on this strategy is coming and will be posted and updated in the Alpha Traders Club at https://www.stockmarketoptionstrading.net
