With different dog breeds, we can see various phenotypes of allergic skin disease. With German Shepherd dogs, we can see a more ulcerative dermatitis when they get infected with their underlying allergies. Areas of the body such as ventral abdomen and paws tends to be particularly affected.

Color Dilution Alopecia (CDA) is a rare disease that affects dogs with dilute coat color (blue, fawn, etc.). This disease results from abnormal distribution of melanin granules and formation of macromelanosomes in the hair shaft. This weakens hair and causes them to break especially along the dorsum. Photobiomodulation is a novel way to manipulate the function of cells within the dermis and epidermis, to reduce inflammation while still accelerating regeneration. Phovia is a two-part system released by Vetoquinol in 2021. As pyoderma has become more and more difficult to control, it is essential that we investigate alternative methods to antibiotics. Phovia has also been shown to be helpful for the management of perianal fistulas (a painful, difficult disease!).

I love lecturing... but this keynote will be very special to me.

On August 26, I get to cross something off of my speaker bucket list: keynote presentation. I was supposed to do this keynote last year and had to drop out after our son was diagnosed with leukemia. 

So I feel so fortunate to get to finally fulfill this dream in two months. Fetch has a special place in my heart. Kansas City has a special place in my heart as a Mizzou grad and an Air Force brat who was stationed an hour away for years. A pustule is a common dermatologic lesion. Though it is often related to a secondary pyoderma, there are other differentials that can cause a pustule. From recognizing it clinically, sampling for diagnostics and coming up with appropriate differentials, learn all about pustules in this episode of the podcast!

Papules are often overlooked clinical lesions. These small red dots can be essential to identify during the dermatologic examination.  Though they are often due to bacterial infection, there are other differentials that should be on your list. This episode will review important diagnostics and things to consider when seeing papules on exam.

Flea bite hypersensitivity is a common cause of pruritus and secondary infection in dogs and cats. It can be easy to prescribe flea prevention and assume you have ruled it out. But some cases need a little more detail when collecting history and providing discharge instructions...

How is the owner giving the flea prevention?
Are other dogs and cats on quality fast flea prevention?
What frequency is owner giving the prevention?

Find out about a recent case I had where the pet was on great flea prevention... but the other pets in the household weren't. A big difference occurred with just a small change.
