The Ride Companion

Thomas Genon joins Olly and Davi in a Whistler hotel ahead of Red Bull Rampage 2026 for a deep dive into what it really takes to ride the biggest freeride mountain bike event in the world.

Tommy G has spent more than a decade at the highest level of mountain biking, from winning Red Bull Joyride and becoming FMB World Champion to establishing himself as one of the most experienced riders in Red Bull Rampage history. In this episode, Tommy takes us inside his preparation for Rampage 2026, including training for enormous spin drops, choosing and building a line in Utah, dealing with fear and risk, the difficulty of judging Rampage and why the event looks completely different when you're standing on the mountain.

Thomas also reveals how two time Rampage winner Brett Rheeder unexpectedly became part of his 2026 dig crew, reflects on finally reaching the Rampage podium in 2025 and explains what it was really like entering the event without a bike sponsor.

The conversation also dives into Tommy's slopestyle career, winning Red Bull Joyride, the evolution of freeride, social media, sponsorship, his favourite Rampage runs and why he believes the perfect Rampage run needs to combine technical riding, creativity, tricks and big mountain freeride.

We hope you enjoy this episode and sorry for the bad quality. Blame Davi.

Roger Vieira is back on The Ride Companion during the best season of his life... In this episode, Roger explains how Bernard Kerr's injury ultimately opened the door for him at Pivot, what life inside a factory downhill team is really like and whether factory support has actually made him faster or, simply given him the opportunity to show the speed he already had. Roger breaks down his first proper factory supported off-season, testing with FOX in California, riding in Queenstown, changing his approach to training and working with Bernard Kerr to improve some surprisingly specific weaknesses in his riding. We also get deep into the mental side of World Cup downhill racing. Roger explains the 'red zone vs blue zone' approach he's using with his mental coach, why World Cup qualifying creates so much pressure and what goes through his head in the seconds before leaving the start gate. Roger also explains why urban downhill brings out a completely different mentality in him, why he loves the Red Bull Cero Abajo series so much and the intricasies of downhill street racing. Once again, Roger delivers with great insights. We hope you enjoy the episode. Rachel Atherton is one of the greatest downhill mountain bike racers of all time. With 40 UCI Downhill World Cup victories, six overall titles, five elite World Championships and the only perfect World Cup season in history, Rachel achieved almost everything the sport could offer. In this deeply honest conversation with Davi and Olly, Rachel opens up about what happened when winning stopped defining her. Recorded at Dyfi Bike Park in Wales, Rachel discusses motherhood, suffering a serious postpartum haemorrhage during the birth of her second daughter and the difficult recovery that followed. She explains why she felt torn between motherhood and racing after having her first child, her experience of postpartum depression and why winning her 40th World Cup at Lenzerheide left her feeling unexpectedly empty. Rachel also reveals why she eventually stepped away from racing, how injury changed her priorities and why discovering a new purpose has sometimes felt harder than winning a World Cup. The conversation explores the loneliness and pressure of dominating downhill, how her relationship helped separate her identity from her results and the hidden workload that comes with being the fastest rider in the world. This is Rachel Atherton beyond the race results. We hope you enjoy the episode. Jenna Hastings joins The Ride Companion for an incredibly honest and hilarious conversation about life as a professional World Cup Racer. The Pivot Factory Racing rider and 2022 Junior Downhill World Champion opens up about the pressure of qualifying, questioning whether she can still ride a bike during World Cup practice and crying between Q1 and Q2 before fighting back to finish fifth in Andorra. Jenna explains why winning at Crankworx hasn't automatically translated into World Cup success, what separates the fastest women in downhill and why making a final can still feel like winning. She also reveals that she sometimes vomits inside her helmet! Away from racing, Jenna talks about growing up riding BMX in Rotorua, leaving school at 17 to pursue her dream, travelling overseas with Eddie Masters and joining Bernard Kerr's Pivot Factory Racing programme. She also shares what it's like living in a renovated caravan in Wales, chasing summers and building a future beyond professional racing. This is a real look inside the life and mind of one of the World's fastest bike racers. We hope you enjoy it and don't forget to leave a like and comment. Ten years ago, I recorded the first version of this podcast from my bedroom with no microphone, no experience and absolutely no idea what I was doing. More than 460 episodes later, I wanted to sit down and reflect on some of the milestones that reflected where this all started. On my own, in a room, still with no idea what I'm doing. This is a solo reflection on the terrible early recordings, the guests and messages that changed everything, meeting Olly Wilkins, creating Lockdown Companion, building our first studios, the arrival of Doug and Naomi, the Rob Warner episode, Hardline, Marin Bikes, Warner's Race Companion and where TRC Media House could go next. I also answer listener questions about nearly giving up, my favourite guests, the sacrifices behind making the show sustainable and what ten years of podcasting has taught me. Most importantly though, this is a THANK YOU to everyone who has watched, listened, subscribed, supported the show or trusted us to tell their story. It began without a plan and, honestly, it still doesn't have much of one! Thank you for an incredible ten years. Peace and love. Mathew Pritchard is best known as one of the stars of MTV's Dirty Sanchez but, this chat goes far beyond the stories everyone has already heard... In this episode, Mathew joins Davi and Olly to talk about who he was before the fame, how skateboarding shaped his life, how Pritchard vs Dainton became Dirty Sanchez, what MTV saw in the group and what life was really like when the show exploded around the world. Mathew opens up about the difference between 'Mathew' and 'Pritchard', the pressure to perform in public, the money, the partying, the loss of routine and what happened when the fame slowly dwindled away. He also speaks honestly about addiction, anxiety, going cold turkey on 6 October 2022, the support system that helped him through and why routine, training, food and purpose are now central to his life. The conversation also covers The Road of Excess, Mathew's new documentary about rowing across the Atlantic, fame, excess, addiction, mental health and life after Dirty Sanchez. Plus veganism, Dirty Vegan, Dirty Health, Ironman Wales, Everest plans, why mountain bikers are 'nuts' and whether a Dirty Sanchez reunion could ever happen. Alan Milway joins Davi and Olly for an inside look at the Norco x adidas Race Division and the realities of coaching riders at the sharp end of the UCI Downhill World Cup. Alan explains why what feels fast on a downhill bike isn't always fast, how he uses split-screen analysis and trackside timing to improve line choice, and why some elite riders need to slow down to actually go faster. There's also discussion around the tiny margins deciding World Cup qualification, the psychology of missing finals and why more practice could potentially make downhill racing more dangerous. This episode also covers athlete and product development with adidas, F1 inspired technology, changing race lines, mental fatigue, caffeine, junior women being prevented from hitting features, protected riders, privateers and whether World Cup downhill is doing enough to create genuine sporting heroes. Alan also shares the full story of suffering a perforated bowel, undergoing emergency surgery and experiencing some terrifying hallucinations during his recovery. We hope you enjoy this episode!

Crashing is part of mountain biking but, how much do we really understand about what happens to the brain when we hit our head? On this episode of The Ride Companion, Davi and Olly are joined by HIT Recognition founder Euan Bowen and Sam Reynolds for an eye opening conversation about concussions, head impacts, brain health and the future of safety in MTB. Euan explains how HIT Recognition started as a university project inspired by concussion in rugby, before developing into a head impact monitoring platform now being used across mountain biking, rugby, motocross, ice hockey and more. Sam Reynolds also shares his personal experience with serious concussion, including the crash that left him unable to finish sentences, struggling with noise, forgetting words and wondering whether he would fully recover. He explains why having real data could have helped him make better decisions around competing and recovery. This conversation covers everything from MTB crash culture, to World Cup downhill practice loads, kids in bike parks, helmets, rotational forces, CTE, concussion symptoms, recovery, and why brain health might become as important as training load in action sports. On this episode of The Ride Companion, we're joined by Matt "Cippy" Cipes from Marin Bikes. Cippy is Marin's Category Manager for performance mountain bikes, which means he plays a huge role in shaping the brand's full suspension bikes, e-bikes, spec choices, geometry, suspension feel, pricing, development timelines and overall ride quality. Recorded at Marin Bikes HQ in California, this episode dives into the history of Marin County as one of the birthplaces of mountain biking, the origins of Marin's 'Made For Fun' ethos, how a mountain bike goes from idea to production and why developing an e-bike is far more complicated than simply adding a motor and battery. Cippy also gives an honest take on the current e-bike power arms race, why Marin isn't rushing to chase huge motor numbers, what brands should really be focusing on and how ride quality still matters more than spec-sheet bragging rights. We also get into 32" wheels, XC's comeback, the future of analogue mountain bikes, the new Marin TAM, the development of the Alpine Trail E, why Marin looks to moto for certain design ideas, and what kind of rider feedback is actually useful when creating a new bike. Wyn Masters is back on The Ride Companion after a brutal crash at the opening round of the 2026 UCI Downhill World Cup in South Korea. Fresh from the Mona YongPyong World Cup, Wyn joins Davi and Olly to explain exactly what happened in the crash that left him with a fractured wrist and a serious AC joint injury. Wyn breaks down the controversial B-line, the lack of visibility, rider traffic, marshal positioning, shortened practice, and why he believes the crash was completely avoidable. This episode goes way beyond the injury. Wyn shares his thoughts on whether the South Korea World Cup was ready to host a race, the cost of sending teams across the world, the 'hardtail guy' controversy, whether World Cup downhill is becoming too expensive and what makes a great World Cup venue. The guys also get into Asa Vermette's unbelievable elite World Cup debut win, Loïc Bruni and Amaury Pierron's performances, Jackson Goldstone's pressure as defending champion, the rise of young riders, women's downhill, Valentina Höll's new vlog series, the Gates Gearbox $100k challenge, pro rider salaries, Wyn's viral video about mountain bike earnings, and what it really takes to race 100 World Cups. This is a huge episode with one of the most important and respected voices in mountain biking. Episode Sponsors:- - RX Sport: RX Sport are your one stop eyewear shop. Danny Hart joins The Ride Companion for a BANGER episode! In this episode, Danny takes us deep inside the world of World Cup downhill racing. He talks openly about pressure, qualifying formats and how the sport has evolved since his legendary 2011 Champery World Champs run which cemented his name in mountain biking history. Danny shares what it was like winning world championships at such a young age, the highs and lows of a long racing career and how he's managed to stay competitive in one of the toughest sports in the world. From travelling the globe with his family in a camper van to battling the new generation of riders like Jackson Goldstone, Amaury Pierron and Loïc Bruni, this episode gives a rare look into the mindset of a rider who has spent his life chasing speed. We also dive into race preparation, training, bike setup, the mental side of racing, and what really happens behind the scenes at the Downhill World Cup. Danny explains why racing is often far more intense than it looks on TV, and why even after decades in the sport, nothing compares to the feeling of dropping into a race run. We hope you enjoy this episode with Danny Hart!

Andrew Dodd aka Doddy is the podcast! Doddy is a man who has lived through every era of mountain bike media, from the golden age of print magazines at MBUK to YouTube with Global Mountain Bike Network and now working inside the industry with Mondraker. We dive deep into the evolution of mountain biking, how bike media really works behind the scenes, and why the modern bike industry might be overcomplicating things. Doddy shares untold stories from his time testing thousands of bikes, what it was like reviewing products when magazines could make or break brands, and how the rise of YouTube, TikTok and influencers has completely changed the landscape. We also get into why modern bikes might be 'too much', the truth about bike reviews (then vs now), the explosion of content and how it affects riders, e-bikes, gravel bikes and industry trends, burnout from working in bike media, what actually makes mountain biking fun and much more. This is one of the most insightful conversations we've had about the bike industry — from someone who's seen it all, we hope you enjoy it!

Dom Ferris, founder of Trash Free Trails joins The Ride Companion to talk about one of the biggest issues affecting every rider, runner and outdoor space user: single-use pollution on our trails. Dom explains how Trash Free Trails started, why trail litter is about far more than 'bad behaviour' and how mountain bikers can take real ownership of the places they ride. The conversation goes deep into MTB trail stewardship, nature connection, mental health, community action and the systems that keep single-use pollution showing up in the outdoors. We also dive into the data behind trail litter, the reality of what's being found on UK trails, why drinks cans, bottles, gels and food packaging are such a major problem along with how new legislation like a deposit return scheme could help change things. There's loads in here too on trail culture, bike park responsibility, how to make cleanups more positive, and why Dom believes outrage alone won't solve anything. If you care about mountain biking, trail building, riding spots, the outdoor community, litter picking, environmental action, access to nature and keeping trails clean, this is an episode you need to hear and share with your community. We hope you enjoy the episode! Learn more about Trash Free Trails and the Spring clean at trashfreetrails.org/

On this episode we're talking DarkFest 10 and, why it MIGHT be the final event, the new Rocket 2 concept for even more airtime and Sam's full circle return to Polygon bikes after first signing with them back in 2012. Sam breaks down the behind the scenes story of landing his first 'proper' sponsor, how Polygon helped shape his career and the moments he still remembers like they happened yesterday, from Rampage's Superman over the canyon to early contests in the golden era of slopestyle. We also dive into the physics and fear factor of the world's biggest jumps, why tailwhips get harder at speed, what happens if you tap the front brake mid-air and how DarkFest is evolving as the next generation pushes the limits plus, loads more. It's just Davi and Olly in the studio this week and.. it goes exactly how you'd expect. Davi has a new bike day and brings his new Marin Alcatraz dirt jump bike to work (nothing hits like a fresh hardtail), which turns into a bigger conversation about why you don't actually need the best bike to have the most fun. The lads talk about Hardline Tasmania being cancelled, the Super Bowl let down and end up debating UK geology, winter riding, and whether mountain bike culture is slowly losing its soul. We also experiment with a pair of Oakley x Meta glasses in the studio (which gets weird), talk about wether pov is the future of podcasting and answer your listener questions! The first Ride Companion catch up of 2026… and we're straight back into it! We kick things off talking winter illnesses, whether 'man flu' is actually a thing, and why the placebo effect might be more powerful than people think, along with a few honest Christmas confessions (including why we're both useless at gifts). Lunch & Learn is back and we look at motorway lane rules what the rules actually say. We also cover winning Pinkbike Comment of the Year, New Year goal setting vs streak culture, Davi's newest hobby obsession, the idea of finally doing our bike test, and a huge 2026 partnership announcement for the podcast. In this episode, I (Davi) reflect on the lessons I've learned this year through building the podcast and business, navigating burnout, deepening friendships, saying no more often, and learning when to slow down.

I talk about why community doesn't have to be wide but it does have to be deep, why you can't outwork your nervous system, how guilt shows up when we rest and why giving yourself permission to reset often leads to better work on the other side.

This isn't advice — just an honest reflection on what 2025 has shown me so far.

If one of these lessons resonates, this episode's done its job. You're the best. Get early access & ad-free episodes → https://www.patreon.com/theridecompanion

Roger Vieira is back on The Ride Companion and this time it's a completely different chapter! Roger Vieira & Pivot Factory Racing was one of the best stories to come out of the 2025 season. Last time Roger sat in the studio he was questioning whether a factory ride would ever happen, then just weeks later he found himself in Poland racing a brand new bike with barely any testing and suddenly living the dream he'd chased for over a decade. In this episode we unpack that entire whirlwind year, the real difference between "puzzling" as a privateer and "dialling" as a factory rider, battling imposter syndrome, learning to trust the data and the team, and how mindset plays as big a role as fitness. We also dive into Roger's massive Genova street race win on the Pivot Firebird, why that result meant so much to him and the team and how it helped prove he truly belonged at factory level. To top it all off, Roger reveals he's now secured a two year Pivot Factory Racing deal, quit the day job, and is heading into his first ever proper off-season with Queenstown, California and Supercross trips on the horizon. This is one of those full circle Ride Companion stories that we couldn't be more proud to be a part of it. BORA BORA!! The Ride Companion Christmas Ride at BikePark Wales!

Lando Steezy (Leo Smith) has one of the rawest and most inspiring stories we've ever had on The Ride Companion. From growing up homeless, losing family members, watching friends fall into crime and addiction and nearly going down the same path himself, to discovering BMX and eventually becoming one of the most recognisable and influential riders in UK mountain biking, his journey is unreal. In this episode, Lando opens up about his turbulent childhood in Macclesfield, the moment that changed his life at 14, the friends he lost along the way, and how riding became his escape and ultimately his purpose. He talks about the first viral TikTok that blew up overnight, nearly turning down an Anthill Films shoot because he didn't know who they were, and how his partner pushed him back onto social media when he'd lost the love. We dig into representation in MTB, the crossover between wheelie culture and mountain biking, his creative work outside of riding, the grief and anxiety he's learned to manage, and why gravel bikes have become such a big part of his life. This is one of the most honest and powerful conversations we've recorded and we're massively grateful to Lando for being so open. We hope you enjoy the episode.

Rob Warner is back on The Ride Companion!

In this episode, Rob joins Olly and Davi to talk about his first ever trip to Red Bull Rampage, what it was like to finally see the venue in person, the true scale you can't capture on TV and what it feels like watching riders hit massive freeride lines for the very first time. The lads also dig into the harsh realities of athletes pushing big-mountain freeride and action sports to the absolute limit.

Rob opens up about living with ADHD and autism, how it feels being so publicly outspoken about it, and how commentary helps him find flow state. He also reflects on his recent ADHD diagnosis film series, shares details about his new projects, a Viking death-road film in the Scottish Highlands, a rap collab in New York, and the long-awaited return of the Egg Cult with The Whole Egg-chilada.

This is classic Warner, we hope you enjoy the episode! Adolf Silva's Road2Recovery page: https://www.road2recovery.com/athlete-causes/adolf-silva/

The legend, Gee Atherton is on the podcast! In this episode Gee opens up like never before. From bottling fear and the brutal lessons of the Knife Edge crash, to the mindset shift that's carried him from World Cup Downhill racing into big mountain freeride projects. We get into the story of Atherton Bikes and why the family had to start their own brand, why having a World Cup race team was non-negotiable, and what it really takes to build a bike/brand with his family. Gee talks about the future of Red Bull Hardline, why the course has to keep getting bigger, faster and gnarlier, how fear bonds the riders together, and whether it's spawning a brand new discipline: Super Downhill. He also reflects on Rampage (two 2nd places), why walking away from a feature hurts more than crashing, and shares the training hacks that keep him riding at the top level after decades of injuries. Gee teases a brand new edit that almost required him to ride in a stab proof vest and his next big-mountain project in Nepal. This is a rare look inside the mindset of one of the sport's most iconic characters, this episode is unmissable and we hope you enjoy it. If you do, share the episode with your friends! Trail boss Duncan Ferris is on the podcast! Duncan Ferris has lived two MTB lives: from 4X racer and World Cup track builder to shaping the UK's most ridden bike park trails at BikePark Wales. In this episode, Duncan takes us from the Bristol BSX scene, to building World Cup 4X tracks like Schladming, Vigo and Villingen and finally chasing down the National Champs jersey after 20 years. Adventure photographer Dan Milner has spent three decades turning a bike into a passport. From North Korea to Afghanistan, from camping among polar bears in Svalbard to being buried by a 10-day Alaskan blizzard, his career has been about chasing risk, chasing stories, and suffering for the photo. During this episode we get into the infamous 1994 MBUK self-timer 'selfie' that started it all, smuggling bikes onto gondolas in flip-flops, why real risk changes as you age, the strange normality of Pyongyang, bivvying through a typhoon with minders in polythene raincoats, and the wild beauty of Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor. Dan also opens up about leaving Chamonix after 24 years for a biodiversity project on the Isle of Skye, the demise of magazines versus short form content, mentoring the next generation, and where AI does (and doesn't) fit into adventure storytelling. We hope you enjoy the fascinating look into one of the world's most respected adventure photographers. The Ride Companion Christmas Ride at BikePark Wales!

Brendan Fairclough is back in the studio to reveal his gnarliest build ever and give us an exclusive first look at his wildest project yet, a 9m treehouse to under ground tunnel build we've (temporarily) named MTB OBLIVION. We cover why Bren's sitting out Rampage this year, the mental game of competing in Utah, who he's tipping for the win (Godziek, TVS, Emil, Zink?), and the chaos of creating a viral freeride line on a shoestring budget in the Surrey Hills. Blake Samson (aka Zimblake) is on the podcast!! After nine years at GMBN, Blake opens up for the first time about what it was really like to be part of one of the world's biggest MTB YouTube channels.

He takes us inside the "gold rush" early days, the reality of filming 365 videos a year, the sunshine shoots, idea sessions, thumbnail battles, and the relentless pace that nearly broke him. Blake also shares how Martin Ashton brought him into the fold, the story behind the legendary Bucket Bike, his approach to reaching audiences outside of MTB, and his surprising pick for the one bike he'd ride for life. And as one chapter ends, Blake teases the next: going all-in on his own channel with a mix of MTB, outdoor builds, Jeeps, 4x4 adventures, camping, motorbikes, fishing, and big adventures still to come.

Flying solo this week companionship! During this episode I decided to talk about anxiety (amongst other things). I wanted to share how my anxiety presents it's self, where I think it comes from, why so many of us feel it and what's actually helped me manage it. I also take some time to answer some listener questions around MTB origins, riding with pros, running in a new bike, ebikes, Billy Bolt's Tyne Ride, fitness/bodybuilding, music, books, podcasts and more. I don't find doing this easy AT ALL so, I hope you find some enjoyment from me putting myself through it! Josh "Ratboy" Bryceland joins us at the Red Bull studio at Hardline! In this episode, Josh opens up about his unique approach to racing and fatherhood, freeriding, organising events, and his not so serious attempt at farming (despite owning all the gear and growing nothing). We dive into what it's really like to ride Hardline, how he manages his mindset to avoid the dreaded "red zone," and why he never took a serious approach to racing even at the top level. He reflects on his time with the Santa Cruz Syndicate, how racing has changed over the years, and why he stepped away just as the sport was getting more clinical. Josh also shares how he helped create Bolly Skyline Enduro, a grassroots mountain bike event that brought his local community together in the best possible way. What does it take to race almost every Enduro World Series round since 2013, survive a life threatening brain aneurysm and then keep racing? In this episode of The Ride Companion we sat down with Iago Garay to hear about his journey from early Mega Avalanche races to the modern EDR World Cup. We cover everything from how Enduro racing has evolved, the training demands, nutrition, memorising tracks and Iago's near death brain aneurysm in 2023 that changed everything. We also dive into what he would do if he ran the sport, why coverage is still an issue, how enduro is still the most relatable form of MTB and how his recovery reshaped his entire perspective on life. In this honest and emotional clip from the Red Bull Just Ride podcast, Rob Warner shares why The Ride Companion was the place he chose to open up about his autism diagnosis for the first time. He reflects on the powerful moment he called Olly and said, "I need to do it, mate — I'm going to lay it all out there." That episode became a major turning point, not just for Rob, but for listeners who resonated with his story. What started as a casual lockdown podcast became a safe space for real talk, deep connection, and conversations that genuinely matter.

In this episode Olly sits down with John Fernandes, co-founder of Freeride Madeira. John takes us through the wild journey of turning a passion for trail building into a global MTB hotspot, hosting the Enduro World Series, Trans Madeira, and welcoming some of the biggest names in the sport. The lads discuss how Jacob Gibbins' iconic photos and Brendan Fairclough's first visit helped put Madeira on the map, the behind-the-scenes madness of shooting DEATHGRIP, and what it really takes to maintain over 200km of hand-built trails across the island.
