  • 7032 - SCRAMBLE: Grandmother who wrongly spent months in jail after Fargo Police used AI facial recognition sues city

A woman jailed for nearly six months for a crime she says she could not have committed is now suing the city of Fargo for $10 million. The Tennessee grandmother Angela Lipps was arrested last summer after Fargo police used AI facial recognition technology to connect her to bank thefts. Her lawsuit claims a detective relied only on that AI technology, even though Lipps has never even been to North Dakota. Charges were eventually dropped after her attorney provided bank records showing she was in Tennessee at the time of those thefts. Lipps says she lost her home and car while she was in jail for something she didn't do and was denied basic care while she was behind bars.Fargo's former police chief previously acknowledged mistakes in the investigation. The department later required more AI training and changed its facial recognition rules. The city of Fargo has not responded to the lawsuit.  See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
