- 271 - The Birth of the Jersey Devil
In my last spooky episode for October, I look at the widely spread legend of a creature roaming the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The Jersey Devil is said to a monstrosity, with a horse's head and bat wings, borne of a witch and now preying upon the unwary traveler through the woods. Where did this legend come from? Finding its birth will take us from the early 20th century back to the colonial era, and along the way we'll meet monster hunters, hoaxers, astrologers, schismatic Quakers, and Ben Franklin! Tue, 23 Dec 2025 - 249 - Special Presentation: The Devil You Know
This week I'm sharing an episode of a new podcast from CBC, called The Devil You Know. In The Devil You Know, Sarah Marshall explores the tangled web of the Satanic Panic, a journey that will take you everywhere from Victoria, B.C. to rural Kentucky to San Antonio, Texas. This is a show about the people who experienced the Satanic Panic in real-time—the believers, the skeptics, the bystanders, the wrongfully-convicted. What was it like to be a psychologist told to look for Satanists in every case; a mother slowly recovering memories of supposed Satanic abuse; a teenager accused of conspiracy to murder? The stories of these eyewitnesses point us toward the real underlying problems—individual and societal—that the Panic was a response to. The fault, as ever, was not with Satanists, but in ourselves. Tue, 09 Sep 2025 - 241 - Back Door to War: A History of Undeclared and Unauthorized US Warfare
Last month, when the Trump regime allied with Israel in their Twelve-Day War and bombed Iran, there was much scrutiny of presidential war powers. In this episode, I look at the evolution of undeclared wars and military authorizations throughout US history, specifically examining the conspiracy claims about two preludes to war: Pearl Harbor and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. Tue, 26 Aug 2025 - 239 - A New Reassessment: Realism on Israel-Palestine
To conclude my series on the Israel-Palestine conflict, I look at Jewish presence in the Levant going all the way back to the Iron Age, the events leading to the founding of the modern State of Israel, its unique economic and military relationship with the US, and its long asymmetrical conflict with Palestinians. Please consider donating to help bring an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It can be confusing and complex to navigate the many charities that claim to offer direct aid in Gaza. Some recommend giving directly to family fundraisers, but investigative reports suggest some GoFundMe donations never reach the citizens they're intended to help. As for charity organizations, some smaller ones have proven to be fronts, and even some major organizations accept donations for Gaza despite not providing direct aid on the ground there. There are even calls by other charities for the Israel and US backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to be shut down because of the numerous massacres occurring at its distribution sites. Among the more trustworthy charities actually working on bringing aid to Palestinians are UNICEF, Oxfam International, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, and Palestinian Children's Relief Fund. Tue, 12 Aug 2025 - 238 - Project Esther and the Weaponization of Anti-Semitism
In this first part of a two-part series on the Israel-Palestine conflict, I start by looking at the Heritage Foundation's campaign to characterize any criticism of Israel or advocacy for Palestinians as anti-Semitism and to exploit that as a cudgel against free speech, academic freedom, and Progressives generally. Tue, 15 Jul 2025 - 236 - License to Discriminate: LGBTQ Rights, Religious Exemption, and the Misreading of the Bible
Here at the end of Pride, I want to discuss the long, bigoted history and false scriptural basis of religious opposition to LGBTQ rights, and the effort of the religious right to seek an exemption to anti-discrimination laws so that they can persecute gay and trans people. UPDATE: since the production of this episode, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of religious objection to LGBTQ+ books in the case Mahmoud v. Taylor. I encourage you to visit 5calls.org and find their page to help you Protest the Unlawful Deportation of Venezuelan Immigrants to El Salvador and demand that your governor Deny Trump’s Police State Tactics for Deportations. Tue, 17 Jun 2025 - 234 - Inalienable: Alien Enemies, the Great Writ, and Trump's Constitutional Crisis
In this episode, I discuss the history of the controversial wartime power that Trump has invoked to justify his mass deportations and the importance of the inalienable rights of due process and habeas corpus, granted by the constitution to all persons, that he is seeking to strip away. UPDATE: a few weeks after the production of this episode, the Supreme Court further contributed to Trump's centralization of power by limiting nationwide injunctions. Now if the courts determine that any executive action is unlawful or unconstitutional in one case, it is powerless to prevent the President from doing the same thing again and again. I encourage you to visit 5calls.org and find their page to help you demand that this administration Bring Abrego Garcia Home and Stop Trump’s Plan to Traffic Civilians to a Foreign Gulag, as well as their pages to Protest the Unlawful Deportation of Venezuelan Immigrants to El Salvador and demand that your governor Deny Trump’s Police State Tactics for Deportations. Tue, 22 Apr 2025 - 230 - The Legend of Joan, Popess of Rome
Throughout the Middle Ages and the Reformation, a story was told of the first female Pope, who had hidden her sex and been elevated to the highest position within the Church by accident. The story of Pope Joan is a total myth, but even today it serves as a useful lesson to illustrate the historical roots of the sexism and misogyny that still keeps women out of leadership positions. In my last episode of October, I consider the legends of 16th-century arch-killers, or what we might consider serial killers today, cave-dwelling highway robbers who were also said to be cannibals and sorcerers, like Sawney Bean and Christman Genipperteinga, whose kill count reached the thousands according to the cheap and lurid chapbooks and ballads that spread their tales to terrified readers. Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 191 - Introducing: Even the Royals
Admit it: you’re obsessed with royal families – watching them, gossiping about them, wanting to be them. It’s the stuff of fantasy. But for real life royals, the crown jewels can be more like shiny handcuffs. There are expectations and rules – and if you break them, the consequences are big, and very public. And there are royal families and wild royal tales from around the world and throughout history that you have never heard before. Even the Royals is a new podcast from Wondery that takes you inside the cloistered world of royal families, past and present, where wealth and status often come at the expense of your freedom – and maybe even your life. In these stories, very human emotions, like jealousy, love, disgust, have the power to reshape the world. This is just a preview of Even the Royals. You can listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts, or at Wondery.fm/royals_historicalblindness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tue, 16 Jan 2024 - 185 - The Historical Jesus and the Myths of Christ Mythicism (Another Historically Blind Xmas Special!)
In this year's annual Xmas special, I put the Christ back into Christmas by refuting the fringe skeptical view that no such person as Jesus Christ ever existed. This topic forced us to examine what historical sources we can trust, how unreliable and yet how useful the New Testament may be to historians, and how the pagan continuity hypothesis leads to yet more unsupported, extreme conclusions. Tue, 12 Dec 2023 - 183 - The Mushroom Kingdom: The Entheogen Theory of Religion
In this last full episode of the year before my holiday special, I tackle an alternative view of religion and history with some academic chops that also indulges in a great deal of conspiracy theory: the idea that all religion was actually inspired by the use of hallucinogens. Correction: The episode seems to imply that Ruck himself conducted research on cannabis's use as a sacrament, when in fact I only meant that Ruck had promoted the research, which was actually published in Chris Bennett and Neil McQueen's book Sex, Drugs, Violence... and the Bible.
