- 1182 - 510. Mohawk Maiden
National Indigenous Peoples Month in Canada honours Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-80) was born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, in present-day New York State. Influenced by French Jesuit missionaries and converted to Catholicism at age 19, and after taking a vow of perpetual virginity, she left her village, and moved to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, Canada. There she died five years later, respected for her piety and good works. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized as a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter's Basilica in 2012. Tue, 09 Jun 2026 - 1180 - CODEX 8.3 The American Crisis by Thomas Paine
A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine— an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. The essays were gathered into one volume in 1882, showcasing the iconic opening line: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

On the night of June 6, 1944, President Roosevelt went on national radio to address the nation for the first time about the Normandy invasion. His speech took the form of a prayer.

Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) wrote Don Quixote, an early 17th century fictional character made famous by the Spanish author. This epic novel went on to be read around the world in Spanish and most other languages, making its author one of the most-read writers in human history. The story’s influence on North American literature is immeasurable. Such admiration is displayed by a life-sized statue of Don Quixote de la Mancha and his faithful sidekick Sancho Panza that sits at the bottom of a rock cliff in Guadalajara, Mexico. E225.

Thu, 28 May 2026 - 1162 - CODEX 8.1 The American Crisis by Thomas Paine
A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine— an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. The essays were gathered into one volume in 1882, showcasing the iconic opening line: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

Tue, 19 May 2026 - 1149 - Fête de Dollard (Dollard’s Day)
Dollard’s Day or La Fête de Dollard in French, is now National Patriots' Day (officially known in French as La Journée nationale des Patriotes)—a provincial holiday in Quebec observed annually on the Monday preceding May 25. National Patriots' Day commemorates the 1837-1838 Rebellions in Lower Canada. Established in 2003 by the Quebec government, this holiday replaced the older, unofficially observed Fête de Dollard which commemorates the Battle of Long Sault which occurred over a five-day period in mid-May 1660 during the Beaver Wars. It was fought between French colonial militia, led by 24 year-old garrison commander of Fort Ville-Marie (now Montreal) Adam Dollard des Ormeaux (1635-60) with their Huron and Algonquin allies, against the Iroquois Confederacy. Vastly outnumbered by the Iroquois, Dollard and his companions died, but their efforts were not in vain, for the action delayed the Iroquois advance and imminent attack on Montreal. For these reasons, Dollard is regarded as an iconic figure in the history of Quebec and one of the saviours of New France.

Officially known in French as La Journée nationale des Patriotes, National Patriots' Day is a provincial holiday in Quebec observed annually on the Monday preceding May 25, while the rest of Canada take the day off work to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday, known as Victoria Day. National Patriots' Day commemorates the 1837-1838 Rebellions in Lower Canada and honors the Patriots who fought the British colonial power for political freedom, democracy, and national recognition. The Patriots, led by figures like Louis-Joseph Papineau, staged an armed rebellion against British colonial rule to establish a democratic and representative government. For a while, the holiday was known as Dollard and Chenier Day, to immortalize garrison commander of Fort Ville-Marie (now Montreal) and Adam Dollard des Ormeaux Jean-Olivier Chénier (1806-37), a Patriot commander killed in action during the1837 Battle of Saint-Eustache. National Patriots' Day falls on the cusp of warmer weather, it is widely treated by Quebecers as the unofficial start of the summer season. Canada’s civil war ended unsuccessfully with the deporting, in chains, of nine prominent French Canadians to the tropical “Island Paradise” of Bermuda as political prisoners. They became Bermuda's famous French Canadian Exiles.

Anne Hutchinson gave birth to 15 children over the course of 24 years. Born in England in 1591, she was a midwife, Puritan leader, spiritual advisor, religious reformer, and an important participant in the fledgling Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638 — her role as a mother was central to her life before she was banished. During her trial and banishment in 1637–1638, she was 46 years old and pregnant with her final child. After relocating to New York, she and most of her children were killed in 1643 during a Siwanoy Indian raid, with only one daughter, Susanna, surviving. Born in England in 1591, Puritan Anne Hutchinson was a spiritual advisor, religious reformer, and an important participant in the infant Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638.

Sun, 10 May 2026 - 1133 - Pocahontas (Mother's Day Weekend SPECIAL)
Pocahontas became a MOTHER, when she married English planter John Rolfe in 1614 and gave birth ten months later to their son, Thomas Rolfe, in January 1615. Thomas Rolfe, who survived into adulthood and had his own descendants, lived in England and later returned to Virginia. Pocahontas took her son with her when she traveled to England in 1616, where she was introduced to high society. Shortly before returning to Virginia, Pocahontas died in 1617 of a suspected illness at age 22, leaving Thomas in England with his uncle before he later went to live in Virginia. While some oral histories suggest she may also have had a child named Ka-Okee with her first husband, Kocoum, this is not documented in mainstream historical records, which focus on her son with Rolfe. Her marriage and son were seen at the time as a symbol of the "peace" between the English settlers and the Powhatan people, and her name at baptism, Rebecca, was interpreted by some as "mother of two peoples". In 1608, Pocahontas (1596–1617) befriended the daring English explorer and adventurer John Smith (1580–1631) and later converted to Christianity. Her story has been romanticized over the years, many aspects of which are fictional, with the most famous being the many celebrated stories told about her and John Smith.

To satisfy the continent’s need for labor, agreements between two parties about long-term work gained popularity. The length of servitude might be a specified number of years or until the laborer reached a certain age. Many people indentured themselves in order to gain passage to North America or to escape debt and poverty.

A strange medieval affliction caused a mass hysteria event in Europe where people inexplicably and uncontrollably danced for weeks, leading to several deaths from exhaustion. Likely caused by extreme stress, famine, and disease, victims believed they were cursed by St. Vitus, the patron saint of dancers, actors, and epileptics, traditionally associated with healing nervous disorders known as "St. Vitus’ Dance". Dancing sickness or disease was a documented, fatal phenomenon. This and other bizarre events lead up to the infamous Massachusetts Salem Witch Trails that took place in 1692. The exact site of the Popham Colony was lost until 1888 when a plan for the site was found in the General Archives in Spain. This plan exactly matches the location at Sabino Head near Maine's Popham Beach State Park. Later archaeology in 1994 confirmed the location and the accuracy of the plan. Born in Maine, then part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Sir William Phips (1651-95) rapidly advanced from shepherd boy to shipwright, ship's captain, and treasure hunter. Captain Phipps was famous in his lifetime for recovering a large treasure from a sunken Spanish galleon in 1686.

In 1628, an English fleet left Britain for the St. Lawrence River led by the adventurer privateer Kirke Brothers. Samuel de Champlain, anxiously awaited relief ships from France to feed the residents of Quebec who were on the point of starvation. In 1629, the five Kirke brothers, now aware of the desperate conditions facing the Quebecers, demanded a French surrender of the fort, settlement and fur-trading post.

Thu, 16 Apr 2026 - 1095 - 497. Was Walter Raleigh a heroic Pirate?
English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen Elizabeth the First, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. He played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado".

Tue, 14 Apr 2026 - 1093 - CODEX 4.14 Common Sense by Thomas Paine (conclusion)
Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain. Paine’s powerful words came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution itself. General George Washington had it read to his troops.

The Plymouth Company was chartered by King James in 1606 with responsibility for colonizing the northern east coast of America. The merchants agreed to finance the settlers’ trip in return for repayment of their expenses plus interest out of the profits made. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony, in present-day Maine, the northern answer to the previously discussed Jamestown Colony, founded by the Virginia Company of London. The Popham Colony was named for its chief investor and Lord Chief Justice of England Sir John Popham who presided over the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes. Pioneering colonist Ferdinando Gorges (1565-1647) was a British naval, military commander, was a key figure and major promoter of the English colonization of New England, and investor in the Popham Colony. His early involvement in English trade with and settlement of North America as well as his efforts in founding the Province of Maine earned him the title of the "Father of English Colonization in North America," even though he never set foot in the New World. Elizabethan ‘Sea Dog’ Sir Richard Grenville (1542-91) was Walter Raleigh’s cousin and an English privateers who was authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, even during times of peace. Carrying letters of marque issued by the English Crown, the Sea Dogs frequently attacked both enemy shipping at sea and enemy outposts on land... frequently targeting the Spanish in North American waters and ports.
