Wed, 21 Oct 2026 - 1h 06min - 113 - JTG MINI: The OTHER time Kelly Clarkson got mad she couldn’t buy something
At this point we’ve all heard that Kelly Clarkson got really mad this week when (she says) she was denied the chance to buy a $15,000 wooden bird automaton. But this isn’t actually the first time Kelly Clarkson made headlines for being really, really mad that she wasn’t allowed to buy something.
In 2012, Kelly Clarkson outbid the Jane Austen House Museum at auction, paying £150,000 to buy the only existing ring ever to belong to Jane Austen. There are less than 50 existing Jane Austen-owned artifacts total, only three pieces of jewellery, and only ONE ring. The museum wanted the ring so they could preserve it as part of Jane Austen’s legacy and share it with Jane Austen fans for generations to come. Kelly Clarkson wanted it so she could wear it. As her engagement ring. There was a public outcry at the time, but Kelly wouldn’t budge.
NOBODY TELLS KELLY CLARKSON SHE CAN’T BUY A THING.
This is Just The Gist (MINI) of the time Kelly Clarkson was not allowed to buy Jane Austen’s ring: the 2012 Sotheby’s bidding war against Jane Austen’s House Museum, the export ban that declared the ring a national treasure, the scramble to raise enough money to match Kelly’s bid, Kelly’s very salty comments after she was forced to hand the ring back, and one LEGENDARY TikTok video that refused to tell the ‘diplomatic’ version of the story (hat tip to you @VainAusten).

Tue, 13 Oct 2026 - 1h 08min - 112 - Just The Gist of… Christa Pike's failed execution
If you’ve seen Christa Pike’s name in the headlines this week next to the words “botched execution” and have no idea what actually happened, this is the episode for you. Last week, on the 30th of September 2026, Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike, who had spent 30 years as the only woman on the state’s death row for a murder she committed at 18. The first lethal dose of pentobarbital didn’t kill her. Neither did the second. After two hours behind a closed curtain she left the death chamber in an ambulance, and five days later she woke up in hospital and asked where she was. Her lawyers say she’s the only person known to have survived a completed execution in US history, and nobody, including the Governor of Tennessee, seems to know what happens now.
But in all of this, the victim has been forgotten. Her name was Colleen Slemmer. She was 19, a Florida kid in a ‘Computer Geek’ T-shirt who had left home for the first time to study computers at a Job Corps centre in Knoxville, and who phoned her mum on the night she died to say some girls were bothering her. A few hours later, Christa Pike killed her. Colleen’s mother, May Martinez, put it this way: ‘The criminals get so much attention. Why? Colleen has been lost in this.’
This is Just The Gist of Christa Pike: the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, the Satanic Panic trial, the ‘Death by Gossip with Wendy Williams’ episode, the Governor Bill Lee clemency fight, the pentobarbital her lawyers say went into her arms instead of her veins, and the mother who drove ten hours from Florida to watch it end and is still waiting to bury her daughter whole.

Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 12min - 110 - JTG MINI: The Top Ten Shark Tank Success Stories
Most people think of 'Shark Tank' as the show where hopeful entrepreneurs try to get rich people to invest in their ridiculous inventions (wine for cats, anyone?). And while that's a big part of it, Shark Tank has (surprisingly) also been the launch of some BILLION dollar companies. Scrub Daddy was discovered on Shark Tank, and it's not even close to being the most successful company that got its start on the show. One shark put $50,000 into a product that had not sold a single unit, and it has made her tens of millions. Another turned a $400,000 investment into an estimated $300 million.
This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of the top ten Shark Tank success stories: the billion dollar brands, the best deals Lori Greiner, Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Daymond John and Robert Herjavec ever made, and the no-deal pitch Kevin O'Leary now calls probably the biggest miss in the show's history.

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 1h 02min - 109 - Just The Gist of… The Murder of Selena Quintanilla
In 1995, Selena Quintanilla was about to become one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Just 23 years old, she was already considered the Queen of Tejano music and was easily the most famous singer on the Latin-American charts. .People often said it wasn’t that she was ‘the Latin Madonna’ but that Madonna was ‘the English Selena’. She'd just played to a record 61,000 people at the Houston Astrodome in her home state of Texas, she'd won a Grammy, she was the face of Coca-Cola, and she was halfway through recording her first English-language pop album that was going to make her a household name everywhere, not just Texas. Until, one morning in March 1995, Selena was suddenly and shockingly murdered by the president of her fan club.

Thu, 01 Oct 2026 - 1h 02min - 108 - JTG MINI: Last Ditch - the covid conscious lesbian bar
"I hope your venue gets firebombed." That was a real comment on a real Instagram post from a small lesbian bar in Greenfield, Massachusetts, announcing that one night a week, masks would be optional.
The Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue opened in 2025 as a COVID-conscious, anti-capitalist bar where no one could be turned away, and it's now the subject of what has reportedly become the Boston Globe's most clicked story in a decade. This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of the Last Ditch lesbian bar: the $50,000 loan, the 400-comment Instagram post, the 3½ hour community meeting that fell apart on Zoom, and the co-founder who left to go to clown school.

Wed, 30 Sep 2026 - 1h 01min - 107 - Just The Gist of… The Falling Man - 9/11's most haunting photo
This month marks 25 years since 9/11, and of all the images to come out of that day, possibly the most haunting is one that was published the next morning and then quietly disappeared. Richard Drew's photo of a man falling headfirst beside the North Tower of the World Trade Center caused so much outrage when it ran on 12 September 2001 that newspapers stopped printing it almost overnight. Around 200 people fell from the Twin Towers that morning, but only one became a symbol, and journalists spent years trying to put a name to him. Should they have? This is Just The Gist of The Falling Man: the Associated Press photographer who captured every person he saw fall, the Windows on the World staff trapped above the fire, Tom Junod's 2003 Esquire story that became one of the magazine's most read ever, the search for his identity that reached the families of Norberto Hernandez and Jonathan Briley, and the widow who begged a reporter to clear her husband's name.

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 1h 01min - 106 - UNLOCKED BREAKIN' NOOZ: Lindsay Clancy Case Update
We published our 'Just The Gist of The Lindsay Clancy Case' episode (you can listen to it here) a few weeks ago, and it very quickly became one of our most listened to eps ever. Now that the case has ended in a mistrial, we had a chat about it all on Just The Gist's weekly paid bonus show Breakin' Nooz - about where the case stands now, and the (mostly) respectful and thoughtful discussion the episode caused amongst our listeners, who both agreed and disagreed with each other, and our approach.
Since this is a topic that resonated so significantly with so many gisteners, we decided to take the chat from this week's Breakin' Nooz and put it outside the paywall so anyone can listen. But please remember - this is JUST a chat! Breakin' Nooz is very conversational and casual in nature. If you're after the usual, comprehensive JTG-style coverage of the Lindsay Clancy case, definitely listen to the episode first.

Mon, 14 Sep 2026 - 30min - 105 - Just The Gist of… Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton died last week at 80, and she may literally be the last universally loved person we’ll ever see. This is the whole story: the girl born in a one-room shack in the Smoky Mountains with no electricity and 11 siblings, who wrote her first song at five, played the Grand Ole Opry at 13, and moved to Nashville the day after she graduated high school (where she met her husband of 60 years at a laundromat, on her first ever go at a washing machine). The Porter Wagoner years, 'Jolene', the resignation letter that became 'I Will Always Love You', '9 to 5', Dollywood, and the quietly enormous philanthropy: the Imagination Library that has given away over 330 million books, the Moderna vaccine money, the children's hospital that now carries her name, and the fact she was secretly a producer on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. Musical genius, business brain, and possibly the most generous person in American entertainment history. Also a great flirt.

Thu, 03 Sep 2026 - 1h 25min - 104 - JTG MINI: Why is Selena Gomez being sued over her company 'Wondermind'?
Selena Gomez is being sued for fraud. Investors say the mental health startup she founded with her mum, Mandy Teefey, took their millions based on promises that never came true. Based on Selena's massive star power, the company valued at $200 million before it had made a single dollar. But besides a website, what did Wondermind actually DO? (not much, apparently.)
This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of Wondermind: the Selena Gomez fraud lawsuit, co-founder Daniella Pierson who Anna Delvey'd her way onto the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and the co-CEO mum who allegedly spent her days in the office sleeping and watching TV.

Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 1h 22min - 103 - Just The Gist of... The Billionaire Boys Club
"Tape mouth. Handcuff. Explain situation." When police finally searched missing conman Ron Levin's Beverly Hills mansion in 1984, they found a seven-page murder to-do list, left behind on the killer's own personalised letterhead, signature doodled all over it.
The killer was Joe Hunt, the 24-year-old leader of the Billionaire Boys Club, an LA investment group made up of the rich, bored, freshly graduated sons of men they could never hope to impress. Hunt promised them a genius trading formula that couldn't fail. What he actually built was a Ponzi scheme, a pseudo-intellectual bro cult, and eventually two murders in which almost nobody involved had any actual money. This is the story of the scammer who got scammed, and possibly the only murderer in history to bring a to-do list. This is Just The Gist of the Billionaire Boys Club: Joe Hunt, the murder of Ron Levin, the fake $5 million trading account, the 1987 Judd Nelson miniseries, and the Kevin Spacey movie that made $618 on its opening weekend.

Wed, 26 Aug 2026 - 1h 09min - 102 - JTG MINI: There’s a new ‘luxury’ bag on the market - made of T-Rex leather.
“Move over Birkin. Watch out Chanel. There’s a new apex predator.” OF LUXURY GOODS. A luxury bag made of T-rex leather was unveiled earlier this year at Amsterdam Art Zoo Museum. The leather was made by taking some collagen remnants found in a 68-million-year-old T-Rex femur bone, and smooshing them with some cells to grow T-Rex skin. That skin was then turned into leather, dyed a bluish-grey and ‘crafted’ into a luxury handbag. Experts are predicting it will sell for the amount of ‘ten Birkin Bags’. But complex science had to be part of making this happen, so was any of this (at all… even a little) for scientific benefit? Or medical research and development?
Lol no. IT’S ALL ABOUT CAPITALISM BÉBÉ.
The luxury industry is apparently freaking out that billionaires aren’t as interested in the usual ‘luxury goods’ anymore, because they hate that the normies (AKA the poors AKA you and me) can access the same stuff. (See last week’s JTG MINI on the Hermes Birkin.) And what’s the point of buying a thing if all the plebs can buy it too? That kind of consumption is not special enough for billionaires. Enter: Dinosaur Leather. We have officially reached the kind of dystopian future where rich ladies are sick of Birkin and are looking for the kind of exclusivity that can only come from buying the resurrected skin of a dinosaur. Try and buy a fake version of THAT in Bali you bogans!

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 28min - 101 - JTG MINI: The weird process of buying a Birkin Bag (AKA 'The Hermès Game')
You can walk into an Hermès store with 20 grand in cash, ask for a Birkin bag, and they will say no. Because Hermès doesn't sell you the world's most coveted handbag, Hermès decides if you DESERVE one. Hopeful customers spend years (and tens of thousands of dollars) buying scarves, blankets and homewares first, stuff Hermès clients literally call 'garbage', all in the hope of one day being invited to spend another 15 grand on a bag. It's called The Hermès Game, and thousands of people are playing it right now.
This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of The Hermès Game: Jane Birkin and the sketch on an Air France sick bag, quota bags and the pre-spend, the 10.1 million dollar original Birkin, and the sales associates who insist there are no bags in the back (there are bags in the back).

The Lindsay Clancy case is the story everyone seems to be talking about right now. But if you haven’t been following Lindsay Clancy’s story from the start, it’s a hard one to catch up on, so this episode breaks it all down and gives you just the gist of what you need to know.
In January 2023, after months of desperately trying to get help for her declining mental health, Lindsay Clancy took the lives of her three young children, and ended up paralysed in an attempt to take her own. She was charged with murder, and has been in custody in a psychiatric facility ever since. Her trial began in July 2026, with Lindsay’s legal team arguing she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and is not criminally responsible. The prosecution is arguing the killings were planned. Her husband (who was tragically the one to find Lindsay and their children Cora, Dawson and Callan back in 2023) has since divorced her and remarried, but has made it very clear that he forgives her, saying: “I wasn’t married to a monster. I was married to someone who got sick.”
Lindsay Clancy’s story has triggered a long overdue and much needed conversation about the inadequacy of not just women's healthcare, but maternal and postpartum healthcare in particular. But thanks to the trial being televised live, this case has also triggered a major conspiracy rabbit hole online, with increasingly bizarre theories being thrown around as each day passes.

Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 1h 39min - 99 - BONUS BREAKIN' NOOZ: Logies and AI Gae Guys and psychotic Harry Potter fans oh my!
Surprise! Free for everyone this week!
It's not news, it's NOOZ! In these JTG BONUS eps, Rosie Waterland gives just the gist of the week's most important nonsense. Episodes drop every Tuesday (along with a bunch of other bonus stuff!) for members of The Gistener Club, which you can access via the Just The Gist Patreon right here or through Apple Premium Subscriptions.
This week!
What do you get when you mix just the right amount of bogan nostalgia and sequinned glam? THE LOGIES. Australia's night of nights, hosted this year by national treasure Robert Irwin, who is never not smiling or reading an autocue. Protect him at all costs. The Jake Schroeder (@frostedjake) and Sam Altman saga has finally come to an end, and Rosie refuses to accept that it was fake. THIS GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP.There are updates in the whole Phia scandal (gisten to our recent episode JTG MINI: What is going on with Phia? here) and things don't look good for billionaire offspring Phoebe Gates, with messages seeming to prove she and co-founder Sophia Kianni knew they're little app was doing dodgy stuff. Looks like that, 'Don't ask me, I'm just a girl!' isn't gonna cut it.A journalist for WIRED requested the data McDonalds had collected on him and they sent him over 500 PAGES specifically about him. And if you've ever eaten at Maccas, they probably have a similar file on you.A multi-million dollar powerline connecting the UK to Ireland came dangerously close to some Bronze Age remains, because (psychotic, insufferable, get it together you freaks) Harry Potter fans demanded its original planned location be moved because it 'desecrated the grave' of Dobby. A fictional character. From a fictional book....

Mon, 17 Aug 2026 - 1h 26min - 98 - ENCORE: The Woman Who Fell in Love with a Dolphin
In the 1960s, Margaret Howe Lovatt became part of a NASA-funded experiment to teach a dolphin named Peter to speak English. What started as groundbreaking interspecies communication research quickly turned into something much more controversial when Margaret moved into a flooded house to live with Peter 24/7 for six months. As Peter reached sexual maturity, their relationship crossed boundaries in ways that would overshadow the entire experiment and become one of the most shocking animal research scandals in scientific history.

Wed, 05 Aug 2026 - 32min - 97 - JTG MINI: The eBay Stalking Scandal story just had a major update.
(ENCORE!) We spoke on JTG’s bonus Breakin’ Nooz this week about eBay agreeing to pay $56 million to Ina and David Steiner - the unassuming, nerdy married couple that eBay executives terrorised with live cockroaches and spiders, a bloody pig mask and a funeral wreath - all because Ina wrote about negatively about eBay on her nerdy industry blog ‘ECommerceBytes’. When we first released this episode, eBay had been found guilty, the CEO had lost his job and the Steiners had sued the company for compensation, but not yet agreed on an amount. It turns out Ina and David kept turning eBay’s offers down, until eBay agreed to give them every last thing they wanted - and they had some very specific demands. (BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT! The CEO literally had spiders sent to their home!)
Listen to this crazy story again, or hear it for the first time and marvel that the company whose motto is 'People are basically good' did any of this. This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of the eBay stalking scandal: former CEO Devin Wenig, the 'take her down' email, Jim's Angels, the pig mask from 'Saw', and David and Ina Steiner, who to this day are still cheerfully writing about eBay's seller fees (but, you know, a whole lot richer).

Tue, 04 Aug 2026 - 49min - 96 - Just The Gist of… The Murder of Maurizio Gucci - the man who lost the Gucci family their fashion company
"My eyesight is not so good darling, I didn't want to miss." The line that finally convinced her own daughters she'd done it, after 17 years of prison visits.
In 1995, Maurizio Gucci walked into his office building in Milan and was shot four times. His ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani was convicted of arranging the hit, and their two daughters - Alessandra and Allegra Gucci - spent nearly two decades visiting her in prison, certain she was innocent. Because the list of people who may have wanted Maurizio dead was long: he had ousted every other Gucci from the family company, cut off the licensing deals making his cousins rich, and sent his own 81-year-old uncle to prison for tax evasion. Then he lost Gucci anyway.
This is Just The Gist of the murder of Maurizio Gucci: the true story behind the 2021 Ridley Scott film 'House of Gucci' starring Lady Gaga, the family feud that cost the Guccis their own brand, and Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife who now spends her days luxury shopping with a parrot on her shoulder.

Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 57min - 95 - JTG MINI: John Jones and the Nutty Putty Cave.
"There’s a reason being hung upside down was once used as a form of torture."
It’s the horror story cavers tell each other as a warning. In 2009, 26-year-old medical student John Jones went spelunking with his brother and nine friends in Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave - a system of tunnels so tight you literally have to breathe out to fit through them. John was aiming to squeeze through the famous tunnel called ‘The Birth Canal’. But... he picked the wrong tunnel. This is Just The Gist (MINI) of the Nutty Putty Cave: John Edward Jones, the dead-end tunnel called ‘Ed’s Push’, the 137 rescuers who spent 27 hours trying to reach him, and the reason the cave has been sealed shut with concrete ever since.

Tue, 28 Jul 2026 - 42min - 94 - Just The Gist of... The Execution of The Romanovs (and the search for Anastasia)
One day they were the most powerful and wealthy royal family in the world, their ancestors having been in charge of Russia for more than 300 years. NEK MINIT... Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Tsarina Alix and their five children (including the legendary Anastasia) are taken down to a basement in the middle of the night and killed, in a VERY botched and violent execution. For years, Russia refused to acknowledge what really happened that night, which led to much speculation about their fate. Thanks to DNA testing, the bodies of Nicholas, Alix and four of their children were finally identified and given a royal burial in 1998.
But the skeletal remains of the other two Romanov children are still, to this day, sitting in a Russian archive, because the Russian Orthodox Church refuses to acknowledge them as authentic Romanovs, despite DNA proof. So... does the church know something we don’t know? Did all of the Romanovs actually die that night? Or did 16-year-old Anastasia escape and move to Florida, eventually retire and become one of the Golden Girls?
This is Just The Gist of the execution of the Romanov Family (and the ongoing speculation about Anastasia).

Tue, 21 Jul 2026 - 1h 00min - 93 - Just The Gist of... Tania Head, The Fake 9/11 Survivor
Her story was one of triumph over trauma. When the planes flew into the World Trade Center twin towers on September 11, 2001, Tania Head was on the floor where the plane hit the south tower. With her arm almost completely severed, she somehow made it out, only to still be at ground zero when the tower collapsed. One of the few survivors pulled from the rubble, Tania woke up in hospital with horrific injuries, only to be told that her fiancé, who was in the other tower, has died. She goes on to become president of the World Trade Center Survivors' Network, and is the public face of those who made it out. One little problem - Tania had never even been to the World Trade Center. Not only was she not in New York City on 9/11, she wasn't even in the United States. Her name wasn't even Tania.
This is Just The Gist of Alicia Esteve Head: the fake 9/11 survivor, the 2007 New York Times investigation that exposed her, and the 2012 documentary' The Woman Who Wasn't There' that asked the question everybody wanted the answer to... WHY?

Wed, 15 Jul 2026 - 1h 05min - 92 - JTG MINI: Phia, Phoebe Gates and the 'cookie stuffing' scandal
Phoebe Gates, the 23-year-old daughter of billionaires Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, has spent the last year insisting her shopping app Phia would succeed with, quote, 'no ties to my privilege or my last name'. And it seemed to be working: Phia raised $43.5 million from investors including Khloe Kardashian, Paris Hilton and Sydney Sweeney, and hit a $185 million valuation in less than two years. Then on the 9th of July 2026, a Bloomberg investigation alleged the app had been faking how well it was doing with a sneaky trick called 'cookie stuffing', possibly defrauding investors and affiliate partners out of tens of millions of dollars. It's so serious that the last people caught doing it were prosecuted by the FBI and went to federal prison. This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of Phia, Phoebe Gates and the fake clicks scandal: the Bloomberg cookie stuffing investigation, the celebrity investors, and the self-made girlboss story that may be unravelling in real time.

Tue, 14 Jul 2026 - 57min - 91 - Just The Gist of... Bernie Madoff
His $68 billion fraud literally came down to fake statements printed on a secret floor of the office - so how did he get away with it for long? Bernie Madoff ran the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, and it was shockingly simple. And yeah - he took billions from billionaires, but he also took the life savings and superannuation of everyday people. Homes were foreclosed on and lives were ruined. Bernie insisted only he was to blame, and his wife Ruth and sons Mark and Andrew Madoff denied any knowledge of the fraud. But a 2023 book (Madoff: The Final Word by Richard Behar (2024)) revealed that all three of them may have been far more involved than they insisted. Bernie died alone in prison in 2021, knowing that both Andrew and Mark had died and Ruth was alone in an aged care facility. Did he even care?
This is Just The Gist of Bernie Madoff and the biggest Ponzi scheme in history.

At the peak of the Labubu craze in 2025, Pop Mart, the company behind the viral blind box toys, was worth more than Mattel and Hasbro combined. That's Barbie AND Nerf, beaten by a snaggle-toothed elf from artist Kasing Lung's 'The Monsters' universe, dangling off the designer handbags of Lisa from BLACKPINK, Rihanna and Cher. Then the bubble burst: resale prices cratered, counterfeit 'Lafufus' flooded the market, Pop Mart's stock plunged more than 22 percent in a single day, and founder Wang Ning personally lost 2.7 billion dollars before lunch. Tue, 07 Jul 2026 - 53min - 89 - JTG MINI: Why Michael J. Fox replaced Eric Stoltz in Back to the Future
EDIT: YES I ACCIDENTALLY SAY 'MATTHEW' INSTEAD OF 'MICHAEL' IN THE FIRST 30 SECONDS I CANNOT FREAKING BELIEVE I DID THAT 🫠😂🫠 (And yes we could go in and change it but I actually think it's extremely funny.)
It's hard to imagine anyone but Michael J. Fox playing the iconic role of Marty McFly in 1985's Back To The Future. But another actor was originally cast, and even spent a month filming almost half the movie's scenes before he was informed he was being replaced.
That actor was Eric Stoltz - a 23-year-old who had been auditioning for years when he landed the life-changing role of Marty McFly. Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Robert Zemeckis, Back to the Future was all but guaranteed to launch Stoltz's career into the stratosphere. But just one month into filming, Eric Stoltz was fired and the role was recast with young sitcom actor Michael J. Fox.
The Back to the Future trilogy went on to become one of the most successful and iconic franchises in cinematic history. Fox himself became one of the world's most famous and beloved actors. He and Eric Stoltz didn't speak for almost 40 years.
So what happened to Eric Stoltz? Why was he fired? And how does it work when an actor needs to be recast after filming is already well underway? This is Just The Gist (MINI) of what is considered one of the most brutal recasting stories in Hollywood history: Michael J. Fox replacing Eric Stoltz in Back to the Future.
(Sorry we're a day behind - James was away for a couple of days and of course I broke something in the studio while he was gone 🫠😂 Rosie x)

Wed, 01 Jul 2026 - 59min - 88 - JTG MINI: Guy Goma - the man BBC accidentally interviewed on LIVE TV
In 2006, a man named Guy Goma turned up at the BBC for a job interview in IT support. Ten minutes later, he found himself live on BBC News 24, being introduced to millions as a leading technology journalist. But it's what happens next that made it one of the most viral videos of all time: A look of panic flashes across Guy's face when he realises they've got the wrong person, and rather than point it out, he composes himself, takes a breath and… just goes ahead with the interview. This year, to mark the legendary moment's 20th anniversary, Guy Goma and the producer who put him on air published a book called 'The Wrong Guy: The Inside Story of TV's Greatest Cock-Up'.

Wed, 24 Jun 2026 - 51min - 87 - Just The Gist of... De Beers and the Diamond Marketing Scam
Why is a diamond supposed to cost you two months' salary? Why is it THE rock we’re supposed to propose with? Turns out none of it is real. Diamonds aren't rare and they're almost definitely not worth what you paid. All of that was made up by an advertising agency paid by De Beers - the world’s biggest diamond company. Because De Beers knew if people found out that diamonds weren’t actually rare or special, they’d stop buying them.
This is Just The Gist of what was arguably one of the best marketing campaigns in history (and the reason that diamond ring on your finger isn’t nearly as valuable as you think): De Beers and the Diamond Marketing Scam.

Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 1h 03min - 86 - JTG MINI: The Glitter Conspiracy
Nobody knows who buys most of the world's glitter. And whoever it is REALLY doesn't want you to find out. Back in 2018, a New York Times journalist rang one of the biggest glitter companies on the planet and asked a simple question: who is buying all the glitter? They refused to say. Seven years later, the internet still hasn't worked it out. This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of the glitter conspiracy: the weirdly secretive industry, the interview with 'Glitterex' that kicked it all off, the theories from boat paint to the US military, and the one question nobody will answer.

Wed, 17 Jun 2026 - 40min - 85 - Just The Gist of...The Kennedy Family (AKA Kennedys 101)
It was highly requested so here it is: just the gist of the Kennedy family! A basic breakdown of how they came to the US from Ireland, how they became one the wealthiest and most powerful political families in America, and who a bunch of the notable family members (and connections) have been, and are, today.
Since I've told a couple of 'Kennedy Family' themed episodes of Just The Gist, (gisten toThe Chappaquiddick Incident here andJFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette Kennedy here), quite a few Gistners asked me to strip it back even further and give just the gist of the general family history. And that's on me! My weird hyperfixation meant I assumed people knew more about this than they do, and one of the major rules at Just The Gist is no assumed knowledge!
So consider this Kennedys 101. The basics of what you need to know about them to understand any of our Kennedy-themed episodes. And ooft there's a lot of them - John F. Kennedy and Jackie O, Bobby Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Maria Shriver, Chris Pratt, Big Edie and Little Edie from Grey Gardens, Patrick Schwarzenegger, RFK Jr., Jack Schlossberg…We go from an Irish farmer in 1845 to The White Lotus in 2025 and Trump's White House in 2026 - it's all in there bébé. Well, just the gist of it.

Tue, 16 Jun 2026 - 1h 04min - 84 - Just The Gist of… The Death of Mary Jo Kopechne, otherwise known as 'The Chappaquiddick Incident'
Once both Senator Ted Kennedy's older brothers had been assassinated, he was widely expected to finish what JFK and Bobby had started by running for President in the next US election. Until, late one Friday night in 1969, Ted Kennedy got drunk at a party, crashed his car off a bridge, where it flipped mid-air and landed upside down in the pond below. Ted managed to swim free, but rather than calling for help or alerting authorities, he left his car submerged in the water and went back to his hotel to sleep it off.
Still inside the car though, was Ted Kennedy's passenger: 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne. Mary Jo was alive for more than an hour, trapped in a tiny air pocket until she suffocated to death, waiting for help that never came. Ted Kennedy wasn't punished, and while he didn't end up President, he did go on to spend the next 40 years as one of the most respected and longest serving members of the US Senate.
This is Just The Gist of The Death of Mary Jo Kopechne, otherwise known as 'The Chappaquiddick Incident'.

Wed, 03 Jun 2026 - 1h 10min - 83 - ENCORE: The Dave Matthews Band Bus Poop Incident
In what eventually became known as ‘THE CRAPPENING’, a Dave Matthews Band tour bus dumped 800 pounds of toilet waste while driving across the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago in 2004. And in an example of what might be the most perfect - yet unfortunate - timing ever, there just happened to be an open-air sightseeing tour boat passing directly under the bridge at the exact same time…
Dave Matthews Band tried to deny being involved, but after being soaked in what was described as a "rust-coloured waterfall” the 120 passengers who were aboard ‘Chicago’s Little Lady’, and soon the entire city of Chicago, were demanding answers.

In 2010, NBC tried to hand The Tonight Show, the 60-year-old crown jewel of American late night, to two different comedians. The five-year succession plan they spent years building collapsed in seven months, took down the entire network's primetime line-up with it, and ended with $45 million in severance, one million people in "I'm With Coco" t-shirts, and one of the great public-image collapses in TV history. Sixteen years later, Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno have still never spoken. This is Just The Gist of the Tonight Show battle between Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno.

Inside an average bee hive, 80,000 bees are running a 99% female matriarchy. The queen is the only one allowed to have sex, baby queens are made not born, and male drones get kicked out to starve in winter when they stop being useful. Tue, 26 May 2026 - 39min - 80 - Just The Gist of… Amelia Earhart
She was the most famous female pilot in history, a feminist icon, and arguably the world's first influencer, all carefully built by her book publisher husband George Putnam. But when Amelia Earhart vanished over the Pacific in 1937, the conspiracy theories went wild: Japanese spies, government cover-ups, secret island lives. Eighty-nine years on, the most likely explanation for what happened to her might also be the most disturbing of all. This is Just The Gist of Amelia Earhart: the brilliant PR campaign, the doomed 1937 round-the-world flight, and the theory that has haunted Howland Island ever since.

Wed, 13 May 2026 - 1h 05min - 79 - Just The Gist of… Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Two decades on, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is still remembered as the wholesome reality TV outlier of the early 2000s, the show even Michelle Obama showed up for. Each week, Ty Pennington and his TV crew would demolish a deserving family's falling-down house, build them a 7-bedroom mansion in 7 days complete with movie theatres and heated pools, and reduce an entire town to tears. So why did so many of those families end up bankrupt, and in some cases, homeless? This is Just The Gist of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: the 2004 reality juggernaut that pulled 12 million viewers a week, the 7-day mansion builds, and the families who lost everything when the cameras left.

In 2018, a Twitter user called @buzzkillary posted a 30-page PowerPoint titled 'Lorde and Jack Antonoff: An Emotionally Broken Journey', presenting their case that Jack had been cheating on his then-girlfriend Lena Dunham with Lorde while recording Melodrama. ‘The PowerPoint’, as it became known, has long been considered a cult classic internet text by the chronically online, but mostly forgotten by everyone else.
UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO, when Lena published her new memoir Famesick, in which she wrote about her break-up with Jack, and a suspiciously affectionate 'young pop star'. The internet is now declaring ‘The PowerPoint’ vindicated. This is Just The Gist (MINI) of the Lorde/Jack Antonoff PowerPoint.

Wed, 29 Apr 2026 - 1h 23min - 72 - JTG MINI: "When I say bodies, I mean the slush that was left." The woman who lost her family in the Titan sub disaster.
Christine Dawood gave up her seat on the OceanGate Titan sub, so her 19-year-old son Suleman could see the Titanic. Just hours later, Suleman and his father Shahzada were dead. Three years on from the disaster that killed both of them, along with OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Christine has published a book called 'Ninety-Six Hours - A Mother's Search For The Lost Titan Sub', and given a heartbreaking interview to The Guardian about what really happened in the hours after the Titan imploded. This is Just The Gist (MINI) of Christine Dawood: the OceanGate Titan disaster, Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, Stockton Rush, the seat she gave up, and the four days she waited at sea for news she didn't want to hear.

Tue, 28 Apr 2026 - 36min - 71 - Just The Gist of… The triplets separated at birth (who found each other BY CHANCE as adults).
Imagine walking down the street and bumping into someone who looks exactly - EXACTLY - like you? You each talk to your adoptive parents and find out you were adopted from the same agency, on the same day. Then you find out not only are you twins, but TRIPLETS. Three of you have been walking around, your entire lives, looking exactly like each other, and you only grew up a few miles apart. That's what happened to Bobby Shafran, David Kellman and Eddie Galland, the triplets who later became the subjects of incredible 2018 documentary Three Identical Strangers. But as the doco reveals, there was actually a very dark reason Bobby, David and Eddie had been separated. In a secret collaboration between Dr. Neubauer and the Louise Wise Adoption Agency, the boys were unknowingly part of a psychological experiment designed to answer the ultimate question of 'nature vs. nurture' - an experiment that would end up having horrific consequences. And they weren't the only kids involved. This is just the gist of Bobby, David and Eddie - the triplets separated at birth, and the amazing documentary about them: Three Identical Strangers.

Wed, 22 Apr 2026 - 1h 11min - 70 - JTG MINI: The Alex Cooper vs. Alix Earle feud EXPLAINED
Get in losers - two identical blonde ladies with the same name are fighting online. But WHY are the Call Her Daddy mogul and TikTok's 12-million-follower It Girl beefing with each other? Alex Cooper signed Alix Earle and her new podcast ‘Hot Mess’ to the Unwell Network in 2023. Two years later, Alix Earle skipped an Unwell Super Bowl party (GASP!) and got dropped from the Unwell network. Last week, she reposted a Tiktok calling Alex Cooper the grim reaper. Alex Cooper replied with a video telling Alix Earle to cut the passive-aggressive reposting nonsense and just say what she wants to say. None of this matters, but everyone seems to be talking about it, so Rosie sacrificed herself at the altar of the internet to figure out what the hell is going on (and damn it, it’s juicy - even James ended up invested). This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of the Alex Cooper vs Alix Earle feud.

Wed, 15 Apr 2026 - 1h 14min - 68 - JTG MINI: Charlie Javice, the Girl Boss Scammer Who Tricked JPMorgan Into Buying $175 Million Worth of Fake Emails
How does a 29-year-old with big blue eyes and a killer pitch deck walk into one of the biggest banks in the world and walk out with $175 million? Pretty easily, it turns out.
Charlie Javice was a millennial wunderkind, Forbes 30 Under 30 darling, and the founder of FRANK - a student finance start-up helping underprivileged kids get into college (and apparently making millions doing it). After just one meeting with Charlie, JPMorgan Chase wanted in, and they offered her $175 million to buy FRANK. One tiny problem though - Charlie Javice was way better at optics and PR than she was at actually running a business… but she wasn’t going to let that be a reason to turn down $175 mil.
What Charlie did next involved a bunch of fake emails and crossing her fingers that JPMorgan Chase wouldn’t bother to check (hint: the dudn't). This is Just The Gist (MINI!) of Charlie Javice, FRANK, a major bank ignoring basic due diligence and the court battle that has already cost more in legal fees than the whole deal did to begin with.

Tue, 14 Apr 2026 - 59min - 67 - Just The Gist of.... D.B Cooper: The Only Person to Successfully Hijack a Plane
In 1971, a man in a business suit and a beige raincoat bought a one-way ticket to Seattle, ordered a bourbon and soda, and handed a flight attendant a note. It said he had a bomb. By the time the plane landed in Reno, he was gone — along with $200,000 in cash and, apparently, any trace of his existence. No body. No parachute. No fingerprints. Nothing. The FBI investigated for decades and officially closed the case in 2016 — never solving it. It remains the only unsolved plane hijacking in US history. This is Just The Gist of DB Cooper: the 1971 Northwest Orient hijacking, the $200,000 ransom, the parachute jump, and the mystery that has never been solved.

Wed, 08 Apr 2026 - 48min - 66 - JTG MINI: KONY 2012
On March 5th, 2012, a 27-minute YouTube video dropped and within six days, 100 million people had watched it. Every celebrity shared it. Oprah. Beyonce. Everyone. The premise was simple: make a Ugandan warlord named Joseph Kony so famous that the world would have to stop him. It became the fastest viral video in history. But in less than two weeks, the whole thing completely collapsed, ending with the man behind it, Invisible Children founder Jason Russell, having a very public naked breakdown on a street in San Diego.
This is Just The Gist (MINI) of KONY 2012: the viral video, Jason Russell and Invisible Children, the slacktivism scandal, the Lord's Resistance Army, and the spectacular public meltdown that ended it all.

Tue, 07 Apr 2026 - 53min - 65 - Just The Gist of… Wallis Simpson and the royal abdication.
Did you know King Charles was never actually supposed to be King? Charles and Diana, William and Harry - they all would have just been random side-royals if one of their far more important relatives hadn’t quit the royal family. Less than 12 months into his reign, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne so he could marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Even though she never wanted to marry Edward, Wallis was publicly blamed for the royal crisis, which resulted in the newly named ‘Duke and Duchess of Windsor’ being exiled from England for the rest of their lives. And Edward - so used to being treated like a King - found the downgrade to ‘regular citizen’ so difficult, that he and Wallis befriended Hitler and the Nazis, hoping to find a way back onto the world stage.
This is just the gist of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.

In the movie The Terminal, Tom Hanks plays a man who is forced to live in an airport for 9 months after his passport is declared invalid. Most people know that The Terminal was based on a true story, but they don't know that in real life, Mehran Karimi Nasseri wasn't stuck at the airport for 9 months. He ended up living there for 18 YEARS. He entered the international terminal of Charles de Gaulle Airport in 1988, and didn't leave until 2006, all because he didn't have a valid passport.
Getting by with gifts from airline staff and travellers, 'Sir Alfred' used two benches as a bed, washed in the airport toilets and ate McDonalds for every meal. This is Just The Gist (MINI) of Mehran Karimi Nasseri; the stateless man who lived in Terminal One at Charles de Gaulle Airport for almost 20 years, the bureaucratic nightmare that put him there, and the far sadder truth about why he stayed.

Tue, 31 Mar 2026 - 42min - 63 - Just The Gist of… the McDonald’s Monopoly Fraud
For more than a decade, the entire McDonalds Monopoly game in the US was completely rigged. From 1989 to 2001, anybody who won a major prize in the competition had actually cheated, with help from someone on the inside. That someone was Jerome ‘Jerry’ Jacobson, Head of Security for the company in charge of making and distributing the McDonald’s Monopoly pieces. But when McDonalds found out that nobody was legitimately winning the major prizes, they still let the public spend their money trying to win in one last competition, because the FBI needed to go undercover to catch the Monopoly cheaters in a massive McSting. And when Jerry Jacobson finally revealed how he had pulled the whole thing off, it literally came down to one accidental fluke.

Tue, 24 Mar 2026 - 54min - 61 - JTG MINI — The La La Land / Moonlight Oscars Mix-Up
At the 2017 Oscars, La La Land was announced as Best Picture. The producers rushed the stage. The speeches started. And then a panicked staffer ran on, confusion spread through the Dolby Theatre, and La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz grabbed the microphone and said: "There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke."
It was the most chaotic two minutes and twenty-three seconds in Oscars history — and it all happened because one accountant couldn't put his phone down.
This is Just The Gist Mini of the La La Land/Moonlight Oscars mix-up: the story of Brian Cullinan, the PricewaterhouseCoopers partner who was so busy tweeting celebrity selfies backstage that he handed Warren Beatty the wrong envelope — and then stood in the corner mouthing "shit" while someone else cleaned up his mess.

Wed, 18 Mar 2026 - 47min - 60 - Just The Gist of… The 1989 Oscars, aka The Worst Oscars in History
In 1989, the Oscars opened with Snow White going on a date with Rob Lowe, giant cardboard stars with human legs, and (for some reason) dancing tables. The ceremony was so bad that Disney sued, seventeen of Hollywood's biggest stars penned an open letter saying they were ashamed, and producer Allan Carr never worked again. Today Rosie breaks down the 61st Academy Awards — widely considered the worst Oscars in history. This is Just The Gist of the 1989 Oscars disaster.

Tue, 17 Mar 2026 - 53min - 59 - JTG MINI: The eBay Stalking Scandal
In 2019, the CEO of eBay was caught up in a bizarre scandal that involved harassing a random married couple called David and Ina Steiner. David and Ina had live cockroaches, spiders and even a pig carcass mailed to their home, explicit magazine subscriptions addressed to them but delivered to their neighbours, their house posted online as the location of a swingers party, trackers placed on their cars and a funeral wreath couriered to their front door. But why did the CEO of a Fortune 500 company care so much about a nerdy couple living in the suburbs? David and Ina Steiner are journalists who ran a niche website called EcommerceBytes, writing about issues affecting people who sell things online. And when Ina wrote some stories about Ebay that CEO Devin Wenig didn't like, he gave his team the orders: "TAKE HER DOWN." . This is Just The Gist (MINI) of the eBay stalking scandal — the true story of the eBay harassment campaign that sent seven people to prison.

Wed, 11 Mar 2026 - 49min - 58 - Just The Gist of... JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy
In 1996, John F. Kennedy Jr. was the closest thing America had ever had to a prince. The only son of assassinated President JFK, he'd been named People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive, dated half of Hollywood, and was widely expected to follow his father into the White House. When he married Calvin Klein PR powerhouse Carolyn Bessette in a secret ceremony on a remote Georgia island, they became without question the most famous couple in the world. But less than three years later, John and Carolyn were dead - with their bodies, and the body of Carolyn’s sister Lauren, found strapped to their seats in JFK Jr.'s private plane on the ocean floor off Martha's Vineyard. This is Just The Gist of JFK Jr., Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, the Kennedy Curse, and the plane crash that ended Camelot.

Tue, 10 Mar 2026 - 1h 26min - 57 - Just The Gist of... Baby Jessica
In 1987, there was a news event that brought the entire world together. People did not stop watching their TVs for days - the First Lady of the United States even postponed surgery until she knew the outcome. Eighteen-month-old Jessica McClure had fallen down an old well and was wedged almost ten metres underground for 60 hours. Every news channel that existed had cameras in that tiny backyard in Texas, while the world watched - live - and waited in suspense to see if she’d come out alive.

Being sucked out of a plane mid-air. Swimming away after his train crashed into a river. Being hit by a bus and walking away from a (different!) bus crash. His car swerving off the road and plummeting off the side of a cliff. Two separate car explosions. Over the course of his life, Frane Selak survived every single one of these accidents. "You could look at it two ways," Selak said in an interview. "I was either the unluckiest man in the world, or the luckiest. I preferred to believe the latter." This is Just The Gist (MINI) of the unluckiest, luckiest man to ever live (so he says...) Frano 'Frane' Selak.

Tue, 03 Mar 2026 - 22min - 55 - Just The Gist of... The Jonestown Massacre
In 1978, 909 people lined up, drank poison, and died. More than 300 of them were children.
For decades, it was described as the largest mass suicide in modern history, and it remained the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until 9/11.
But was it really a mass suicide, or mass murder?
Jonestown was founded by Jim Jones, leader of the Peoples Temple, a racially integrated American church that preached equality, socialism, and community care. By the time the world learned its name, 909 men, women, and children had consumed a cyanide-laced drink in a remote settlement in Guyana — while armed guards stood watch.
Some believed. Some resisted. Many were too young to choose. But all became part of what the world now shorthand calls “drinking the Kool-Aid.”
This is just the gist of The Jonestown Massacre.

Wed, 25 Feb 2026 - 1h 02min - 54 - JTG MINI: Alysa Liu
Alysa Liu just won Olympic gold for a figure skating routine that has already gone down in history. People are saying she changed the stuffy world of competitive skating forever. But just four years earlier, she had quit the sport entirely - and was thrilled at the thought of never skating again. So how does someone go from Olympic retirement at 16… to gold at the Milan Winter Olympics?
Alysa Liu started skating at five, was a prodigy by ten, and was winning national titles before she was tall enough to climb onto the podium. Then, at 16, she shocked the figure skating world by saying: I’m done. She didn’t want her whole life to be medals, pressure and expectations anymore.
Two years later though, she decided to make a comeback - but only on her terms. No chasing quadruple jumps for points. No extreme dieting. No giving up college or friends. She picked her own music, her own choreography, her own identity on the ice. She wasn’t chasing gold. She was chasing joy.
And she skated better than ever.
This is a story about Olympic pressure, burnout, retirement and comeback, mental health, and what it means to insist on being yourself in a sport built on control. It’s also about how a 20-year-old seems to understand life, boundaries and happiness better than most of us.
This is Just The Gist of US figure skater Alysa Liu.

Tue, 24 Feb 2026 - 56min - 53 - Just The Gist of... 'How Do I Live'. One song, two versions and a huge public battle.
In 1997, a little film starring Nicholas Cage premiered in theatres called CON AIR. It was a huge blockbuster, helped massively by having a hit song to go along with it, called ‘How Do I Live’. But there were actually TWO versions of ‘How Do I Live’ released at the same time. Singers Trisha Yearwood and LeAnn Rimes both released their own version of exactly the same song, on exactly the same day, but only one was officially part of the movie Con Air, and most people, to this day, don’t realise which version they were listening to back in 1997. In fact, most people don’t realise that both versions of the song were nominated for a Grammy, but only one took out the prize. And only one went down in history as a record-breaking phenomenon.

Wed, 18 Feb 2026 - 52min - 52 - JTG MINI: Steven Bradbury
In 2002, five men were racing in the 1000 metre short-track speed-skating final at the winter olympics in Salt Lake City. The only Australian in the race - Steven Bradbury - was not considered a medal-contender. He spent most of the race in last place - far behind the four other skaters duking it out for the gold, silver and bronze. But then, with just 50 metres of the race to go, the four skaters in the lead all crashed out on the very last bend, and Steven Bradbury was so far behind them that he was able to avoid the pile-up and sail past them and across the finish line, to be awarded Australia’s first ever gold medal at a Winter Olympic Games, and bringing the term ‘doing a Bradbury’ - meaning being extremely lucky to unexpectedly come from behind and win because of someone else’s mistake - into everyday vernacular. BUT, what a lot of people don’t know, is that Steven Bradbury’s race wasn’t just about luck - he actually had a strategy that paid off in the end. This is Just The Gist MINI of Steven Bradbury.

Tue, 17 Feb 2026 - 43min - 51 - Just The Gist of… Tyra Banks (and her history of bizarre business failures).
With this week’s premiere of Netflix’s ‘Reality Check: America’s Next Top Model’, it seemed like a good time to take a look into the history of the Smize Queen herself: Tyra Banks.
You know her as the creator and host of America’s Next Top Model. You know her as a Victoria’s Secret Model. You know her as the woman who yelled, “WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!”
But do you know Tyra Banks as the boss of several (failed) businesses? A Twilight-style Young Adult novel/movie/product empire called ‘Modelland’ that was cancelled after one book. A beauty line called ‘Tyra Beauty’ that was actually an MLM and folded in less than two years. A theme park based on… ‘models’ that she said was too hard to describe but was essentially just a place to get $1500 glamour shots (also no longer in business). And now, of course, we have Tyra’s ‘Hot Ice Cream’ at her ‘Smize and Dream’ ice cream store (which has already had some food regulation dramas).

Wed, 11 Feb 2026 - 1h 18min - 50 - JTG MINI: Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s Newsnight Interview
On November 17, 2019, the world watched as Prince Andrew (since downgraded to regular person BUT WORSE), scored one of the biggest PR own-goals in history during a Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis. Convinced the interview would be his chance to get rid of those pesky Jeffrey Epstein rumours once and for all, it became clear within minutes - to everyone but him - that things were not going to end up the way he planned.
By the time the 49-minute interview was over, all Andrew had proven to the world was that the only thing he lacked more than self-awareness was empathy, and the only thing he seemed to have in abundance was an astonishing sense of entitlement, that gave him an uncanny ability to prove that the Dunning Kruger effect very much exists.
Today I am giving you Just The Gist of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s Newsnight Interview with Emily Maitlis.
GISTEN to our episode ‘Just The Gist of… Andrew and Fergie’ right here. (Apple)

Take care when listening.)

Tue, 10 Feb 2026 - 58min - 49 - Just The Gist of: Biosphere 2
In 1991, a billion-dollar experiment took place, designed to see if humans could survive in an artificial earth inside a giant glass dome that would eventually be built on other planets. Years was spent building Biosphere 2 in the USA, and inside was an ocean with actual tides and waves, a rainforest, a desert, vast wetlands, a farm with crops, animals, housing and laboratories. ‘Rain’ could even be switched on and off. Eight Humans lived inside it for TWO YEARS. So why has hardly anybody heard of it? Because it was a disaster, none of it worked, and they nearly died. Turns out, despite sounding impressive, this experiment wasn’t run by NASA or even scientists, it was run by a bunch of hippies from a cult-like experimental theatre group who had no clue what they were doing, but had duped a billionaire into giving them a lot of money.

Wed, 04 Feb 2026 - 1h 15min - 48 - JTG MIN-EDIUM... John Allen Chau
The Sentinelese people are one of the last remaining isolated Indigenous tribes on earth, continuing to live today as they have for thousands of years. Since 1956 they have been protected by laws that prohibit anyone approaching their home on North Sentinel Island. But the laws are also in place to protect any outsiders who try to go there, as the Sentinelese tribe have pretty much tried to to kill anyone who goes near them.
Despite this, in 2018, a 26-year-old evangelical Christian missionary named John Allen Chau decided that the Sentinelese people, who had been living peacefully on North Sentinel Island for thousands of years, were actually part of Satan’s Last Stronghold on earth, because they had not yet accepted Jesus into their hearts by being converted to Christianity. John Allen Chau decided to change that. John Allen Chau is now dead. This is just the gist of John Allen Chau.

Tue, 03 Feb 2026 - 1h 01min - 47 - Just The Gist of… Nellie Bly
In 1887, Nellie Bly was just 21-years-old when she completely changed the way investigative journalism was done by basically inventing going ‘undercover’. She pretended to be insane, got committed to an insane asylum and then wrote about the horrific treatment she endured and as a patient. Bly’s reporting on her time at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island was turned into a bestselling book called ‘Ten Days In A Madhouse’, launching her career and opening the door for other women to do serious journalism.

Wed, 28 Jan 2026 - 55min - 46 - JTG MINI: How one interview may have ruined Timothée Chalamet’s chance at an Oscar.
Timothée Chalamet has made no secret of the fact he is campaigning HARD for this year’s Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘Marty Supreme’. But many are saying he made a major misstep in a recent interview, in which he declared that audiences shouldn’t take his work for granted, as he’s been delivering ‘some top level shit’ for years. Cut to an industry-wide eyeroll and the line ‘some top level shit’ immediately becoming an embarrassing meme. So did he ruin his Oscar chances? Timothée’s team has always marketed him as an earnestly ambitious wunderkind - his brand is taking himself and his art REALLY SERIOUSLY, but in a charming way. When he won a SAG award in 2025 and said in his speech that he wanted to be ‘one of the greats’, people called it ‘refreshing’. But when some people in the room looked visibly annoyed when he recently won at the Golden Globes, whispers started that he may have tipped the scales from ‘refreshingly ambitious’ into, well, thinking he’s ‘some top level shit’.

Tue, 27 Jan 2026 - 40min - 45 - Just The Gist of… The 2019 College Admissions Scandal
We didn’t plan this but 2026 is starting with a NEPO BABY themed week!
Remember when famous actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were sent to prison for literally taking spoilt Nepo Babies?
Over $25million in bribes exchanged hands. Almost every major elite university in the USA was involved. And at the end of the day, the whole thing came down to dodgy photoshop and old-school cheating on tests.. Rick Singer made a fortune when he realised that rich, entitled parents would do anything to get their kids into the best US colleges. But when Rick Singer was busted by the FBI, he quickly flipped and told authorities everything about his 'side door' entry system, leading to a worldwide news frenzy when a lot of very privileged, high profile parents were arrested AND ACTUALLY SENT TO PRISON. The craziest part of this story? What Rick Singer is doing now.

AN EMERGENCY MINI (which very quickly turned into a medium and then a large)!
Brooklyn Beckham just went NUCLEAR on his parents Posh and Becks, officially announcing that he is OUT of the Beckham family and going all in with his in-laws - the billionaire Peltz dynasty. So is Brooklyn just a spoilt Nepo baby who found a richer family, or are the Beckhams actually as toxic as he says? Is his wife Nicola Peltz a real-life Veruca Salt, or is Victoria Beckham a nightmare ‘Boy Mum’? Or is it all true? Gisten in as Rosie gives Just The Gist of the Beckham family DRAMAAAAH.

Tue, 20 Jan 2026 - 1h 14min - 43 - Just The Gist of… The King Who Had a 3-Hour Surgery Without Anesthesia
Totally awake. No pain relief. Just straight up raw-dogging surgery. In 1686, King Louis XIV's anal fistula got so bad that he needed to go under the knife. But surgery for an anal fistula didn't actually exist yet. In fact, surgery in general didn’t really exist at all.
Enter Charles-François Felix, a 'Barber Surgeon' willing to take on the task. King Louis let Felix spend 6 months ‘practicing’ on inmates from the city’s prison, until he had perfected the procedure (or at least managed to perform it once without killing the guy). Once Charles-François Felix was ready to go, all ‘The Sun King’ had to do next was close his eyes, clench his fists, and stay completely still through a three hour anal surgery, the results of which changed the entire course of modern medicine.

Wed, 14 Jan 2026 - 46min - 42 - Just The Gist of... How Kris Jenner Tricked Forbes Into Thinking Kylie Jenner Was A Billionaire
[UNLOCKED BONUS] In 2018, momager Kris Jenner pulled off one of her biggest moves yet: she got youngest daughter Kylie Jenner on the COVER of very serious and respected Forbes magazine. Why? Thanks to her cosmetics company, Kylie was (apparently, according to financial 'proof' provided by the Jenners) about to become the world's 'youngest self-made billionaire'. The cover was a massive coup not just for Kylie, but for Kris Jenner herself and the entire Kardashian/Jenner empire she'd created. Kylie wore a POWER SUIT. Her arms were CROSSED. She was a SERIOUS BUSINESS LADY. And printed next to her (never quite smiling) face were the words: 'Welcome to the era of extreme fame leverage' - legitimising the Kardashian/Jenner business model once and for all. At least... until a year later, when Forbes retracted the Kylie billionaire story and published another article: 'INSIDE KYLIE JENNER'S WEB OF LIES'. We've said it before and we'll say it again: the devil works hard but Kris Jenner works harder.

While chatting this week in Breakin’ Nooz about 50 Cent’s new Diddy documentary ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’, Rosie mentioned the episode we did about ‘The Diddy Situation’ back in 2024 for Patreon members. We were travelling around the country and still calling Breakin’ Nooz ‘From The Van’! There’s obviously been a couple of updates in the case since then, but it’s a good breakdown of Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs and the history that ended with him as such an awful criminal. NOTE: We literally recorded this in the Aussie Outback, so the sound isn’t the best!

CW: While we don’t go into any detail, this episode obviously does deal with the crimes of abuse that Sean Combs has been convicted of. Please take care listening, and reach out if you need (Australia):

Mon, 22 Dec 2025 - 1h 18min - 38 - Just The Gist of... The Chowchilla Bus Kidnapping
In 1976 in Chowchilla, California, an entire school bus filled with children disappeared without a trace. Less than a day later, all 26 of them, along with bus driver Ed, escaped from a hole underground with a terrifying story about being taken by three masked men. Soon, three very wealthy young men, from some of the most well-off families in town, were found with a piece of paper with the word ‘PLAN’ written at the top, followed by a list of the children's names. This is Just The Gist of the Chowchilla Bus Kidnapping - an eyerolling example of ‘Why Are Men’, but also an event that forever changed the way we look at the ongoing effects of childhood trauma.

Wed, 10 Dec 2025 - 1h 09min - 35 - JTG MINI - Cocaine Bear
In 1985, a man called Andrew Thornton II crash-landed in a random driveway in Kentucky after his parachute didn’t open. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest, night vision goggles and a pair of Gucci Loafers. He also had a duffel bag filled with 35kg of cocaine. But Thornton originally had 75kg of cocaine, and it wasn’t until two months later, when a North American Black Bear was found to have had a very, VERY fun time in the nearby woods, that the police were able to figure out what happened to the rest of Andrew’s stash. Cocaine Bear became a Kentucky legend, and its taxidermied body went on a decades-long journey that was almost as eventful as his two-week bender. This is Just The Gist of Cocaine Bear.

Tue, 09 Dec 2025 - 25min - 34 - Just The Gist of… The Disturbing History of the Lobotomy
Beginning in the 1950s, you could take any patient into a local doctor’s office, pay $200, have an ice pick inserted through their eye socket and then hammered into their brain. The whole thing took less than five minutes and was considered as unremarkable as getting a flu shot. Called the ‘lobotomy’, Dr Walter Freeman had invented the procedure as a ‘miracle cure’ for any and all mental illness - he figured by cutting up the part of the brain that controlled emotion, he could stop people being so… emotional. Men would bring in their wives with post-natal depression. Parents would bring in children who occasionally misbehaved. America was officially dazzled by Dr Freeman’s lobotomy technique. But most patients who received lobotomies ended up severely brain damaged (because, you know, they had an ICE PICK shoved into their brain), with many needing 24-hour care for the rest of their lives, if they survived at all.

Wed, 26 Nov 2025 - 49min - 33 - JTG MINI: The epic (and fleeting) love story Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson
Right now Ariana Grande is getting Oscar buzz for her turn as Glinda in Wicked: For Good, but back in 2018 she was mostly making headlines for her intense romance with the guy who made ‘BDE’ a thing: comedian Pete Davidson. Within two months, they met, got matching tattoos, moved in together, got more matching tattoos, got a pet piglet, got more matching tattoos, got engaged and… got more matching tattoos. We were inundated with paparazzi pics of the two of them holding hands, Ariana looking up at Pete like she wished the lollipop she was sucking on was… something else. And then, barely 6 months later, it all ended as quickly as it began. Pete Davidson was soon branding himself with Kim Kardashian’s name, and Ariana Grande was marrying a dude who looked just like her brother (and don’t even get us started on Wicked co-star Ethan Slater).

Tue, 25 Nov 2025 - 27min - 32 - Just The Gist of... Return To OZ
In 1985, Disney released a sequel to 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, with production involvement from legends of cinema George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola. It was directed by Oscar winner Walter Murch and starred a 9-year-old Fairuza Balk (who later went on to star in The Craft) as Dorothy. With that pedigree, you’d think an ‘Oz’ sequel would be a slam dunk, but this film did not have the celebrated reaction we later saw with ‘Wicked’. When the movie was released, parents stormed out of cinemas with their kids, saying it was more like a horror movie than something for children. It bombed at the time, but has since become a cult classic, this is just the gist of the 1985 sequel to The Wizard of Oz that Disney considers a complete disaster they would rather forget - Return To Oz.

Wed, 19 Nov 2025 - 1h 29min - 31 - JTG MINI: The Man With a Penis on His Arm
British man Malcolm MacDonald spent SIX YEARS with a penis grafted to his arm after complications during surgery meant it couldn’t be attached to… the regular spot. He thought he might spend the rest of his life with it just swinging there, but in 2022, Britain’s Channel 4 made a documentary about Malcolm called ‘The Man With a Penis on His Arm’. It detailed the infection that led to the loss of his penis in the first place, and the struggles he had endured waiting for the surgery to finally put his new appendage in the right place. A (Rosie’s Version) of a JTG classic.

Sun, 16 Nov 2025 - 1h 15min - 29 - Just The Gist of... The Challenger Disaster
On January 28 1986, 'America's Favourite Teacher', 37-year-old Christa McAuliffe, boarded the Space Shuttle Challenger, after beating out 11,000 applicants to become the first regular civilian NASA would ever take to space. Satellites had been sent to schools around the country so children could watch the shuttle launch live from their classrooms. But just 73 seconds after launch, the Challenger exploded mid-air, resulting in millions of children witnessing the moment that Christa McAuliffe and 6 other Challenger crew members were tragically killed. The Challenger disaster turned what was supposed to be NASA's triumphant return to relevance through the "Teacher in Space" program into one of the most traumatic moments in US history, broadcast live into classrooms across the country.

Wed, 12 Nov 2025 - 1h 17min - 28 - JTG MINI: Meet MaryBeth Lewis - the 68-year-old woman who tricked an IVF clinic so she could have her ~15TH~ baby.
This story in The New York Times Magazine went ridiculously viral last week because… ooft. ‘She Was Ready To Have Her 15th Child, Then Came The Felony Charges’ was brilliantly written by David Gauvey Herbert, and tells the story of MaryBeth Lewis; a woman who has been having babies via IVF since her mid-forties and doesn’t want to stop - no matter what she has to do to make it happen.
This episode started out as a segment in Breakin’ Nooz, then it turned into a JTG MINI, then it turned into a Medium, then it pretty much turned into a regular-length episode BECAUSE THIS STORY IS NUTS. Rosie gives Just The Gist of one of the most gripping and ridiculously good articles she’s read in a long time. Read it right here in The New York Times Magazine.

Tue, 11 Nov 2025 - 58min - 27 - Just The Gist of... Andrew & Fergie
The trash fire human formally known as ‘Prince’ Andrew is now just a regular person, only worse. Same as his former wife Sarah Ferguson, who until recently was still referred to as ‘Sarah, Duchess of York’. It was huge news in October 2025 when King Charles finally released a statement from Buckingham Palace, officially stripping Andrew of all his official titles and kicking him (and ol’ Fergie) out of the 30-room mansion ‘Royal Lodge’. But HOW did they end up this way? What is just the gist of Andrew and Fergie? How did they meet? How did they both end up such entitled, self-serving people (or were they always that way)? We’ve all seen the headlines about Andrew and Fergie’s enduring, years-long friendship with Jeffrey Epstein (and their continued lies about it), but what is it about them and their history together that led to this royal couple both being so… awful? Rosie gives just the gist of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Sarah Ferguson.
(CW: While this episode focuses more on the history and lives of Andrew and Fergie rather than the specifics of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes and Andrew’s alleged involvement in them, those crimes are obviously part of this story so they are mentioned, without detail, at some points. Take care when listening.)

Wed, 05 Nov 2025 - 1h 42min - 26 - JTG MINI: What exactly is '6 7' (aka 6-7/67/six seven)? JTG's official KidZ Correspondents explain.
All the kids are saying it. Teachers are banning it. South Park did an episode about it. And it was just named Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word Of The Year. So where did 6-7 come from? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Rosie did some research to get to the bottom of it all, including getting the scoop from Official JTG Kidz Correspondents: her 12-year-old nephew Malekai and 6-year-old twin nieces Layla and Layelle. (And yes, she mixes them up during the interview.)
We give you Just The Gist, but if you want more, there’s this:
Forbes article trying desperately to understand the KidZ and their six-seven nonsense
Dictionary.com trying to explain themselves
Music video of ‘Doot Doot (6 7)’ by Skrilla
Video of the original 6 7 kid ‘doing’ 6 7 at a basketball game
Video of the entire restaurant cheering when order ‘67’ is called at an In-N-Out Burger
South Park clip from the recent ‘6-7’ episode (this explains it better than anything tbh)

Tue, 04 Nov 2025 - 36min - 25 - Just The Gist of… Theodore Rex
There is a movie that exists that is SO bad, the lead actress who signed on had to be legally forced to finish filming it. In 1996, recent Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg had signed on to star in a gritty, sci-fi drama, but the final script had turned it into a buddy cop film in which she starred opposite a talking dinosaur puppet wearing Converse sneakers and a backwards cap. Whoopi tired to back out, the producers sued, and she ended being forced to film Theodore Rex against her will (she is so unhappy to be there you can literally see her sighing on screen in some scenes in the movie). With a budget of $33.5million, Theodore Rex was never released in cinemas, making it the most expensive direct-to-video movie ever made (and the biggest regret of Whoopi Goldberg’s career).

Wed, 29 Oct 2025 - 1h 06min - 24 - JTG MINI: The Louvre Heist
IT’S THE DELIGHTFUL CAPER WE ALL NEEDED. On October 19 2025, four thieves (in disguise!) stole $102million worth of jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris. They casually parked a basket lift truck out the front of the building, rode it to the first floor balcony and stepped right inside the Apollo Gallery - home to what’s left of France’s ‘Crown Jewels’. One glass cutter and a couple of minutes later, they rode away on Yamaha scooters with 9 precious items (well, 8 - they dropped a diamond-encrusted tiara that once belonged to Napoleon’s wife). Two men have been arrested, but no jewels have been found, and even George Clooney said he’s proud of the thieves for pulling it off. But why was it so easy to do? Who was the mysterious DAPPER MAN photographed at the scene of the crime? And will they even be able to sell what they stole?

Tue, 28 Oct 2025 - 37min - 23 - Just The Gist of Harrison Okene (the man found ALIVE in a sunken ship on the ocean floor)
In May 2013, Nigerian cook Harrison Okene was sitting on the toilet when his tugboat capsized in a freak wave, trapping him 30 meters underwater in complete darkness. While his 11 crewmates drowned, Harrison found himself in a tiny air pocket, listening to their final screams before silence fell. For 60 hours, he survived on a can of Coke and sardines, fighting off crayfish that fed on his body, praying and singing hymns while the freezing water slowly rose around him. When South African divers finally found him during what they thought was a body recovery mission, they couldn't believe he was alive - making Harrison one of the most miraculous survival stories ever recorded.

In December 2001, Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting nearly $6,000 worth of designer clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue, sparking one of the most bizarre celebrity trials of the 2000s. The '90s indie queen claimed her director told her to shoplift for a role, but the jury convicted her of felony grand theft anyway. Tue, 21 Oct 2025 - 39min - 21 - Just The Gist of The Blair Witch Project
In 1999, The Blair Witch Project became a cultural phenomenon when audiences believed they were watching real found footage of three film students who disappeared in the Maryland woods. But film directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez had actually just created one of the most successful marketing hoaxes in movie history, using fake missing person posters, a fake Sci-Fi Channel documentary, and the early internet to convince the world the Blair Witch was real. Made for just $60,000 with handheld cameras and improvising actors, it terrified audiences worldwide and earned nearly $250 million. But those actors - Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams - were barely paid, and as of 2025, are still trying to be fairly credited for their work.

Wed, 15 Oct 2025 - 1h 22min - 20 - JTG MINI: The Dave Matthews Band Bus Incident

Tue, 14 Oct 2025 - 31min - 19 - Just The Gist of Elizabeth Holmes (Rosie's Version)
In 2014, Elizabeth Holmes was hailed as the youngest female billionaire in America, promising to revolutionize healthcare with her blood-testing company Theranos. With just a drop of blood from a fingerprick, she claimed her Edison machines could run hundreds of tests faster and cheaper than traditional labs. But behind the black turtlenecks, deep voice, and Steve Jobs comparisons was one of the biggest frauds in Silicon Valley history. The technology never worked, patients received dangerous false results, and investors lost over $900 million. Holmes and her business partner Sunny Balwani were both convicted of fraud, with Holmes sentenced to over 11 years in prison, where she remains today still claiming her innocence.

Wed, 08 Oct 2025 - 1h 12min - 18 - JTG MINI: The Disappearance of Bobby Dunbar (Rosie's Version)
In 1912, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar vanished during a family fishing trip to Swayze Lake in Louisiana, sparking a massive eight-month search. When authorities found a boy matching Bobby's description in Mississippi with traveling handyman William Walters, the Dunbar family claimed him as their son. But another woman, Julia Anderson, recognised the boy's picture in the paper and insisted he was actually her son Bruce. After a sensational trial, the court awarded the child to the Dunbars, and he lived his entire life as Bobby Dunbar. But nearly a century later, DNA testing revealed the shocking truth.

Tue, 07 Oct 2025 - 26min - 17 - Just The Gist of Charles Manson
Remembered for being one of the most famous murderers of the 20th century, there's not many people who don't know about Charles Manson and the Sharon Tate/LaBianca murders. But it tends to be one of those topics everybody assumes they know everything about, until they hear the bizarre details. Did you know that Manson didn't actually kill movie star Sharon Tate himself, or any of the victims that 'The Manson Family' are most known for slaughtering? Or that Charles Manson was good friends with The Beach Boys, to the point where one of his songs even ended up on one of their albums? Or that the public were so fascinated with him that he was put on the cover of Rolling Stone?
It's a famous story that's been told a gazillion times, but there's way more crazy 'impress your friends at a dinner party' details in this one than you think.
We give you Just The Gist, but if you want more, there's this:

'Helter Skelter' by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry - probably the most famous book about Manson, written by the lawyer who prosecuted him:

Wed, 01 Oct 2025 - 1h 17min - 16 - JTG MINI: The (embarrassingly fast) rise and fall of Quibi
It was supposed to be the biggest streaming service the world had ever seen. Launched in 2020 by industry heavyweights Jeffrey Katzenberg (the former head of Dreamworks) and Meg Whitman (former CEO of Ebay), Quibi was expected to end up bigger than Netflix and Youtube combined. It had two billion dollars invested in it and the biggest talent in the world - everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Steven Spielberg - was making shows for it. Yet just six months after launching, the streamer shut down, becoming the second biggest start-up failure in history - behind only Theranos. So what the hell happened to Quibi - the biggest streaming service you’ve never heard of?

In 2012, a six-year-old beauty pageant contestant named Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson became America's most controversial reality TV star, thanks to her 'Go-Go Juice' and brilliant catchphrases like "A dollar makes me HOLLAR (Honey Boo Boo Child)!" Wed, 24 Sep 2025 - 1h 23min - 14 - JTG MINI: Balloon Boy
On October 15, 2009, the world watched in horror as a homemade helium balloon shaped like a flying saucer drifted across Colorado skies with six-year-old Falcon Heene allegedly trapped inside. The "Balloon Boy" saga captivated millions for hours until the balloon landed empty and Falcon was found hiding in his family's attic. But when little Falcon told CNN "we did this for the show," the story took a dramatic turn. What followed was a media frenzy, criminal charges, and years of debate about whether the Heenes staged the whole thing as a publicity stunt or if it was a genuine accident that spiraled out of control.
