Oklahoma Sooners Unofficial 40

- 548 - U40: How in the world can OU football pull this off?
It's a beautiful weekend of college football ahead. Huge games all over the country, but none are bigger than the one that kicks off in the Cotton Bowl at 2:30 Saturday. When is the last timer the Sooners won this game as an underdog? Are they capable of doing so? Brent Venables was not happy with his offensive line group and we can only imagine the conversations that go on inside that building when the film is on. What's realistic and unrealistic for this team? For Carey's sake, give Elijah Thomas the ball! The first availability report comes out Wednesday night, who knows what that will look like. Are mind games in-store? Despite the early season disappointment, Sooner fans will show out, and although they will stick with the Sooners no matter what happens, what about the 2027 recruiting class? Wed, 07 Oct 2026 - 547 - U40: John Mateer is your starter for Texas, is this his final chance to shine?
The bye week is here! A much needed reset for everyone after the Sooners 41-13 loss against Georgia. Brent Venables spoke with the media last night, and he is not giving up on John Mateer as the QB1 just yet. Also, he did keep George safe from the lightning. Will John Mateer make it through 4 quarters against Texas? How much is the offensive line to blame for all the issues? Josh's weekends plans were put to a halt due to a presidential matter. Eddie is not having a good day and the Cubs are to blame. Thu, 01 Oct 2026 - 546 - U40: Did we just fix Oklahoma football?
For the first time since the 2018 Rose Bowl, Oklahoma takes on the Georgia Bulldogs. Can the Sooners shock the world? Maybe. Probably not though. The news of David Stone's injury shook the fanbase on Monday night, but maybe it isn't as bad as initially thought? Should Oklahoma fire everyone? The answer varies every 10 seconds so, who knows. Ask Eddie. Finally, we deliver the solution everyone has been waiting for. How does this team get fixed? Starts with believing, and most likely ends with wanting to cry. Wed, 23 Sep 2026 - 545 - U40: Will Ben Arbuckle be able to make the changes necessary on offense?
It's that time of the week again! The OU Board of Regents approved Brent Venables contract extension on Tuesday, no they were never going to push it back. How bad does Oklahoma need to beat New Mexico? Honestly, will anyone be truly happy if it isn't by 50? Trell Harris is set to miss some time with an injury, is it time for someone else in that room to step up? Was the offensive line really that bad? Even if they weren't, are they good enough to support a shift to the run game? Plus, some recruiting talk as Josh breaks down Connor Arant's commitment. Hold on...Josh had how many tickets in one day??? Wed, 16 Sep 2026 - 544 - U40: Oklahoma isn't the only team Michigan is trying to take down
Well...it is Michigan week for Sooner fans. College football has a problem with the Wolverines, and well....SoonerScoop (specifically Eddie) has a Michigan problem of its own. I could tell you about it now, but it doesn't take long into this episode to find out what is happening. Anyway, Oklahoma is facing a huge road trip up to Ann Arbor, what is the injury situation, how is Cole Sullivan preparing to face his old team, and what are some of the keys for this OU offense to perform well. Isaiah Sategna is probably the answer to that last part. The guys break down what Jim Nagy had to say to the media regarding the last additions to the roster. What teams impressed the most in week 1? Plus, a quick recruiting update from Josh. Wed, 09 Sep 2026 - 543 - U40: We are so back and so are the Sooners
Wait...Oklahoma players football this week? That's right, the first Unofficial 40 of the 2026 football season has arrived! Aren't you excited? Good! Unfortunately for you though, we start off on the injury front with some updates on a couple key starters on the offensive side of the ball. Josh is back from a recruiting trip for the ages where he saw a couple five-stars do their thing over in Kentucky. Jumping back to the world of college football, what is the latest on Danny Saili? Honestly, Eddie might be eligible to play at this point. Lloyd Avant might be an even bigger star than expected, at least that's what George says. On the defense, Reggie Powers might be a name offensive coordinators hear in their nightmares. Finally, we cap things off with a little Home Alone talk(yes, the Christmas movie) and much more on this edition of the Unofficial 40 Podcast. 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 542 - U40: College football, oh how close you are
On this edition of the Unofficial 40...we just want college football back. Good thing is, we are just one weekend away. Let's get deep...two-deep...as in what will the two-deep look like. We also got to speak with Elijah Thomas, could this be the year the Sooners have two 1000 yard receivers? Plenty of news coming out of the world of NFL players coming back to college, pointing at LSU. By the way, did the FBI really check the LSU facilities? No idea but it would be cool if they did. We talk some recruiting, specifically how Cooper Witten is a monster among high schoolers. Brent Venables contract extension caused a stir, but what contract extension doesn't these days. And for you huge football sickos out there, Eddie may be the offensive lineman you are looking...all that and more on this edition of the Unofficial 40 Podcast. 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! Wed, 26 Aug 2026 - 541 - U40: Is the decision on Maikkula's backup tearing apart the Scoop staff?
Another day over 100 degrees, but nothing stops the Unofficial 40. We are one week closer to kickoff, and at this point, any college football will do the trick. The guys hit the studio with plenty to discuss, and possibly an egregiously long discussion over who will be the Sooners' center with Jake Maikkula's timeframe uncertain. Josh and Parker have been hitting the recruiting trail hard while George plays with his new favorite football toy, and to be fair we are all a little jealous. Oklahoma's win total saw a slight bump and maybe the hype around the receiver room has something to do with it? Probably not. There is plenty to watch out for before camp closes, speaking of watch, Carey has turned George into a watch guy now...Eddie couldn't care less. Fill in the desire for football with SoonerScoop on this addition of the Unofficial 40 Podcast. 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! Wed, 19 Aug 2026 - 540 - U40: Who are the guys falling in love with on this roster?
The first Unofficial 40 since the Sooners threw the pads on and thank goodness we don't have to record this outside. The guys go over the recent intel from fall camp, including some offensive line talk and of course, George wants to talk about injuries. What kind of numbers does John Mateer need to put up to make Eddie happy? Plus what the new addition on the defensive line means for the Sooners as the season approaches fast. Finally, a tear or two is shed as Russell Westbrook announces his retirement...yes this is an OU podcast. 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! Preseason Camp Week 2. Wed, 12 Aug 2026 - 539 - U40: The guys break down all the talk from OU football media day
We are one day removed from OU fall media day and there is still plenty to cover from the festivities. The Sooners hit the practice field today while we wait for our first glimpse Friday morning. The SoonerScoop crew goes over all things media day in this addition of the Unofficial 40 Podcast. Eddie is still starstruck by Jason Witten, Carey fears the stories from the past that Kevin Wilson might share, Josh's big head can't contain his excitement for the season and George goes back to his vast experience with the law as he still has no idea if the class of 2022 can actually come back. Wed, 05 Aug 2026 - 538 - U40: Getting you ready for the start of football madness next week
Tomorrow is the annual Fostering Futures Coaches luncheon which has kind of become the official kickoff of preseason football in Norman. And next week when we're recording the U40 we will be doing it just 1 day after OU's official media day where we will talk to Brent Venables, assistant coaches and many players. It's going to be a very fun time of the year. Owen Heinecke was scheduled to have a hearing tomorrow as well and George updates us on what is still going on with Heinecke and the NCAA. There are some interesting developments in the NIL space as well. It is something kind of smart that could impose a sort of tax on a school's roster when they take in transfers from the portal. Carey has the breakdown. And will OU have a jersey patch? What type of company is OU looking for? And how soon does it have to get done? George with the update on that one. 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 537 - U40: Is somebody already putting position coaches on the hot seat?
It finally happened, we got a little too into OU football breakdowns as we started going over the offensive positions and what has to happen on offense to for John Mateer to be a more successful quarterback coach. The addition of Jason Witten has been a massive boost at the tight end position. And the tight end room could be one of those positions that really helps turn things around on offense. What is the running back room going to look like? What are Delan McCullough's running back rotations going to look like and who do we think will end up the best player in that room by the end of the season? We feel good about the offensive line. Who can OU not afford to lose along that line and remain productive? And we haven't seen anything of Trell Harris yet, even though Brent Venables declared him healthy and full go at Media Days. WE STILL DON'T LIKE HURT RECEIVERS THOUGH!!! And what about the high school guys? Will someone finally break out?! OK, you see how we can get carried away. George talks about who he voted for in the All SEC voting. And what one player can improve the offense the most? Lots of QB talk in the SEC, general SEC Conference teams and how serious is the SEC about breaking away from the NCAA? Also watch as Eddie cringes as the guys start talking about how different generations view Star Wars. THE FULL BREAKDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! Sooners kicked off SEC Media Days in Tampa 15:00 - One of the big takeaways from SEC Media Days is a belief the TE room is infinitely better 22:17 - Question of the Day: Name one player that can elevate OU to the top of the SEC? 31:00 - OU WR group … still some questions but it’s fun to talk about right now 43:00 - Little OL talk 56:00 - All-SEC talk 1:09:00 - Three leagues: NFC, AFC and the SEC 1:32:00 - Recruiting? Wed, 22 Jul 2026 - 536 - U40: Eddy Pierre-Louis going to SEC Media Days is a good sign for the OL
It is literally the deadest week of the year for sports. Pro tip, always take vacation the week the ESPYs are on TV. But we've kind of had a lot of football thoughts running through our mind watching a lot of OU games being played on ESPNU the last few days. George dropped part 3 of the John Mateer series and it got us thinking... Is there a receiver OU should have tried harder to keep in the portal after watching some games closer to the end of the season? We also talk about Eddy Pierre-Louis being invited to SEC Media Days to represent the team. Is this a message that Brent Venables and the offensive staff feel confident in their offensive line and particularly the leadership that is developing in that room? Major League Baseball held their draft and Eddie says the Sooners came out big winners as far as players that will now return to OU next season. Someone takes us down a rabbit hole of most crushing OU losses. It's also the peak of the offseason so we wondered aloud, how much longer are malls gonna survive? Learn more about your ad choices. Thu, 16 Jul 2026 - 535 - U40: We're sort of ready to start talking about the 2026 OU football schedule
Big 12 Media Days have started and it's a quick reminder that some weird stuff happens during talking season. The Texas Tech situation blew up once again with Brett Yormark handling things poorly in Frisco, Texas during the old conference's preseason event. Oh boy, Texas Tech... Carey, Eddie and George are here with Josh on vacation this week and we've kind of decided it's time. We're dipping our toes in preseason talk. Position talk, storyline talk in our own rambling way of getting going with the start of the season. George has a lot of scenarios about how the season could start and how acceptable that start would be for everyone. George is also getting ready to go on a little vacation to celebrate his first year of marriage to the lovely Erin. Eddie has a family wedding coming up as well. It's wedding season for sure. Just relax everybody, enjoy some football talk as we try and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the start of preseason camp and SEC Media Days in less than two weeks. Wed, 08 Jul 2026 - 534 - U40: How bright is the spotlight on John Mateer? Josh on Wolfgramm's decision
It was a bit rant-e today on the Unofficial 40 as Carey laid out his frustrations getting the audio dialed right in the new studios. So if you have any comments about wanting better audio, Carey has some comments for you. Carey also has some words with OU fans criticizing John Mateer for his play last year. Especially after George visited with Mateer during the Manning Passing Academy about what last season was like for him trying to play through the hand surgery. Tomorrow is possibly a big day for OU in recruiting as Uhila Wolfgramm is set to make his decision. Josh talks about the absolute roller coaster he has been on throughout his visits and decision. We're back, back, back, back for a lot of baseball talk as Eddie and George are headed to Omaha to cover the Sooners in the Men's College World Series. George is going feature crazy on the baseball program right now and we talk about exactly who Brian Kimrey is and why he's given so much money to OU baseball. Carey, George and Eddie are all hate watching the NBA Finals and we couldn't get enough of the Spurs meltdown last night (sorry Spurs fans). Josh is here to recap everything that was in the last week with recruiting and we "sort of" have kickoff times for OU football in 2026. Is there a possible Friday night game out there? And we're excited for the OU baseball program as they head to Lawrence, Kan., for a Super Regional showdown against Kansas. Eddie is headed up for full coverage and we talk about how this team got here. Summer camps are going on and we're bracing for the biggest day yet on Friday. Some truly talented recruits will be in attendance. We've also been able to eyeball some current players and we can't help but be impressed with how physical all the young dudes are looking. Oh yeah, we've got some recent commitments to talk about. Carey has a message for all the listeners about working through the audio issues and the hiccups along the way as we close with George Stoia III's investigative journalism about cat people. 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial 40! Fri, 05 Jun 2026 - 530 - U40: Josh's high school tour is next week, OU camps just after, lots of action to come
It's one of our favorite times of the year. Josh is headed to Oklahoma for his spring football tour and Parker beat him to the punch by flying out to Florida to see OU QB prospect Brady Quinn. And the week after that, we'll have OU football camps underway. And next week, George will be in Destin, Florida, at the SEC meetings. But for now, we open the new studio and turn the Unofficial 40 into the newest video show on YouTube. We'll still be right here for all you audio podcasters, but as many of you told us, you want it all on video too. So here we go folks. Also, the Texas Tech/Brendan Sorsby thing is despicable. The school year is coming to an end and Campus Corner is starting to empty, but we're still here grinding our way toward high school spring football and summer camps. George also took a deep dive into OU's front office as he talked to a lot of agents about how OU's front office operates and how they are to deal with. And oh man, do people hate Lane Kiffin! And we're here for it. How many teams do you really need in a College Football Playoff? We also attended the Rock Creek Entertainment District groundbreaking ceremony. Carey has some beef. Wed, 06 May 2026 - 527 - U40: Burks' fall in the draft, Tech's gambling QB, recruiting flip flop
The gang is back to talk about last weekend's NFL Draft. There were some head scratchers like Deion Burks falling late in the 7th round and Damonic Williams not getting drafted at all. George has the latest on Owen Heinecke as his lawyers were able to get a filing by the NCAA thrown out due to technical errors. The NCAA is looking to add way too many teams to March Madness. We might have to move it to April Madness. And what about this blockbuster news of Texas Tech's quarterback and NIL darling being in hot water over incredible gambling activity? Wed, 29 Apr 2026 - 526 - U40: Looking at NFL Draft futures for OU football's roster
George's X account has been hacked and it was probably his fault. But the gang is here and we're talking about the NFL Draft and where we could see OU's best getting drafted. We also take a look at future draft picks on the current OU roster and we have a spirited debate whether Jayden Jackson or David Stone will go higher in the draft one of these days. We're also buying stock at a Nancy Pelosi pace when it comes to Danny Okoye. We're also wondering why the national love for Oklahoma in 2026 seems to be missing. Are we just terrible homers? Or is everyone seeing it wrong? We talk future schedule and opponent spring game takeaways. Basketball prices seem to be going bonkers in the NIL space. That certainly seems to be affecting Porter Moser's chase for talent. We also talk a little recruiting as we're all fighting to stay awake with late night NBA games keeping us up late. Wed, 22 Apr 2026 - 525 - U40: Getting you ready for what to watch in the Red & White Scrimmage
Tons of activity this week with the spring game coming up on Saturday. We breakdown our expectations for what we'll see along with some predictions of who could step up and open some eyes this Saturday. We also heard from John Mateer and Bowe Bentley this week. What were some of our takeways and Carey and Josh join in with their thoughts. George has been killing the Owen Heinecke court room coverage and we talk about what to expect tomorrow in court for Heinecke and the OU football program. How did we get here? How did Heinecke get here? And what will the judge be presented with tomorrow that could sway him toward granting an injunction to allow Heinecke to play? We also look at the weekend through a recruiting lens with Josh and we hit on some hoops portal and stickball to close things out. * Limited Time Offer – Get Huel today with off exclusive offer of 15% OFF online with our code SOONERSCOOP at https://www.huel.com/SOONERSCOOP. * For a limited time, our listeners can get the Harry's Plus Trial Set for only $10 at https://www.harrys.com/soonerscoop. #ad #harrys Thank you to Huel and Harry's for partnering and supporting our show! Wed, 15 Apr 2026 - 524 - U40: What do OU football, easter candy and Dianna Russini have in common?
We are deep into spring football coming off another media scrum last night on Owen Field. Brent Venables breaks down the roster at most key positions as the Sooners are battling through some bumps and bruises. But what about positions such as safety? Is there enough depth? George has all the latest on the Owen Heinecke eligibility situation and it might be time to start pondering some what-if's about his situation. The spring game is coming and the Sooners will be hosting a huge recruiting weekend. And are the Sooners developing a type at running back? It seems they have their eyes on very specific body types moving forward. George talks women's hoops portal and we debate whether Iowa State's Audi Crooks is the player Jennie Baranczyck is really after from Ames. Some men's hoops and some baseball round us out. Wed, 08 Apr 2026 - 523 - U40: Stand outs for Scoop crew after two weeks of spring practice
We've had three viewings and several rounds of interviews two weeks into spring football practices. Carey, Josh, Eddie and George get together to talk about the things that are standing out to them most through the second week. And there are zero April Fools shenanigans involved in this one. The defense looks good at a lot of positions. George does have concerns about one. The offense is different, and it's clear there is a mantra with the offense this spring. What about the running back room? The tight end room? The QB room? Is Bowe Bentley going to have a backup role by the time the season gets here? We talk a little bit about the shape of the SEC and college football in general. What teams could we see falling apart in 2026? Why is Vegas so down on the Sooners with win totals and point spreads? We wrap up the women's hoops season with George because OU's men start the Crown tonight. Some diamond talk and even though we did a big Recruiting Report today, we get Josh's thoughts on the decommitment of Micah Rhodes. It is a long one folks! Wed, 01 Apr 2026 - 522 - U40: Our impressions after watching an hour of spring practice
Oh man, Carey, Josh, Eddie and George get together to talk about everything they saw during OU's first spring football practice and they break down everything they saw. Tight ends, receivers, defensive line, offensive line, newcomers, coaches, people who got chewed out, people who looked good. It's just a cavalcade of observations from day one. And Carey has some opinions on the fascination with John Mateer's throwing motion. George has some ideas of his own. The take game is actually strong in this one as Carey kind of goes off on OU's decision to do what they're doing to the west side of the stadium. How do you see things? Women's hoops is getting ready for a Sweet 16 showdown and great news as Jen Rocha is returning to coaching for OU softball. Baseball gets set to take on Texas this week as a program at the top of the SEC following series wins against Texas A&M and LSU. What are Eddie's expectations for this weekend. Thu, 26 Mar 2026 - 521 - U40: A look ahead to spring football, March Madness is here
It's the start of the NCAA Tournament and time to give our official takes on how we feel about Porter Moser returning to Oklahoma and Roger Denny's decision to keep him. The women are dancing and they will be dancing late on Friday night. We're hoping the people show up for a 9pm tip-off. And it is spring break and there is no spring football, but next week, spring football returns. We talk a little bit about the position rooms heading into spring and some of the storylines that would make us believe that things are going to go well at certain positions. We take deep dives into the offensive line and receiving rooms as we try and remind ourselves of who is gone and where they went. Carey is ready to read some reports about Taylor Tatum's safety adventures at Michigan while Eddie volunteers to go to Las Vegas to cover the Dan Mullen/Jackson Arnold duo at UNLV. We've been busy around the Scoop offices and that's the way we like it. OU spring football media day was on Monday and Carey is here with some of his impressions since Eddie and George have been burning up the YouTube channel. Got some leftover thoughts from all the guys as well, like what the offensive line could be with the current roster, how productive we think some of the new tight ends could be. Are we not talking enough about Trynae Washington at tight end? After Jim Nagy's comments on Owen Heinecke the other day, George has an update on where Heinecke is in terms of his next move. We've talked a lot about the future freaks weekend, but what about the aftermath? Where did the Sooners make up the most ground? And with what players? Spring is in full swing as baseball and softball are underway, but the Sooners are still producing plenty of football news as Deland McCullough has been tabbed to take over for DeMarco Murray as OU's newest running backs coach. We talk with Josh McCuistion about what that means for recruiting at the position and we get into the running back room in general. There has been a lot of news floating around lately, so forgive some of us if we forgot it (used to be) is the biggest day of the year. National Signing Day! Actually no one remembered because most everyone signs in the early period and then you have the portal. But the Sooners do have a notable addition in LeBron Bauer to celebrate on national signing day. The Sooners are looking for a new cornerbacks coach after Jay Valai is headed to the NFL. What insight do we have on the hire? The Oklahoma Supreme Court also paves the way for the city of Norman to build OU's next arena off campus. We've got some hoops talk as well. Thu, 29 Jan 2026 - 513 - What can OU learn about Indiana's title and apply it to their roster?
College football season is officially over now that Indiana has defeated Miami to win the National Championship. This is a good thing for everyone in college football right? So how did we get here? What did Indiana do that we can apply to the Sooners' roster? Indiana proved it's not just about who is spending the most money on players. It's about a whole lot more than just that. We dive into our thoughts on how they built this thing. And we ask ourselves how close OU is to mirroring some of their approach to being the best in the country. We take a look at the construction of OU's roster heading into the 2026 season and players from the portal who will make the biggest impact next season as we wait on spring football to get started. And what is going on with Porter Moser's squad? They look lifeless and lost. Have we made the decision already? Time to move on from the Moser era? George is on vacation this week. But they don't have a $40 million roster to work with like some others. Nagy was in quick and now is out looking for a few needs at the right price. Also putting a wrap on all the talent the Sooners lost in the portal. With what the Sooners have now, what does the 2026 team look like. And when players get paid, there are consequences to be paid. Basically, if you aren't performing and if you aren't healthy, you aren't guaranteed anything in this climate. It's dog eat dog. We discuss. Thu, 08 Jan 2026 - 510 - U40: The portal is swallowing up a lot of OU players. Any concerns?
It's been a fast and furious day of Oklahoma football players entering the transfer portal. As we were recording the podcast today, we got the news that Mike Hawkins was entering the portal. And even more came after that. George has updates on potential coaching changes. Josh is heading to Orlando for the Under Armour All-American week where he's anxious to catch up with Zane Rowe and other major OU projects. Rowe, the former OU commit, has long been on our radar since we first saw him as a freshman taking on Michael Fasusi in camps. And we have so many other questions about the QB room and the depth there with Hawkins' departure. Surely this means Mateer is coming back right? Tue, 16 Dec 2025 - 507 - We're antsy for the start of College Football Playoff week
It's just Wednesday. The Sooners are still 9 days away from their first round matchup with Alabama in Norman. The All-SEC teams were announced yesterday and OU had 10 players represented. They also had the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year, Tate Sandell, announced during the show. We gush about Sandell but we had to stop. No jinxes needed here. But we're ready to see what this grimey Sooners team can do in a playoff full of great teams. Our question is this? Who has really been through the mud this season like Oklahoma? Or Georgia? Or even Alabama? Has Texas Tech been through the mud and had to have people question their offense like some of the teams in the SEC? Yes, we're officially SEC homers now. Josh is here to talk about another huge 2027 commitment, we mix in some hoops talk and George has his rants on Notre Dame and the CFP committee. Notre Dame... Leave Ivan Maisel alone! Wed, 10 Dec 2025 - 506 - It's National Signing Day on the Unofficial 40
Jim Nagy and Brent Venables put together their first full recruiting class together in the 2026 cycle. How do we feel the partnership is going after listening to both of them talk about the class on National Signing Day? And what about the standouts in this class? Josh McCuistion thinks he can make an argument that the offensive side of the ball has more talent than the defensive side of the ball. And what about the ones that got away? And the ones, like Jonathan Hatton, that didn't? We also hit on some College Football Playoff talk and a little bit of hoops. Always a big show week when it's signing day! Thu, 04 Dec 2025 - 505 - U40: Will LSU leave it all out on the field? Or are they already done?
It's one of the biggest games anyone has seen in Norman in a long time. OU is one win away from heading to the College Football Playoff. Speaking of that, there are a couple of teams that could really blow this thing all up if things fall the right way. We discuss OU's position in the playoff race. Are the Sooners destined to play Notre Dame in Norman? It's also going to be a MASSIVE recruiting weekend for the Sooners. A commitment happened just after we stopped taping actually. Josh with more on the big names in town. It also seems to be a weekly tradition now. We pick a room on the offensive side of the ball and just tear it to shreds. This week, it's the wide receiver room. We pour one out for the death of the green bean casserole. John Mateer may have killed it in Oklahoma. Keep Eddie away from him during pregame warmups. He isn't taking this well. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial 40! Thanksgiving + OU chance to clinch in Norman. What. A. Week. 5:30 - CFP Committee did it again. Wed, 26 Nov 2025 - 504 - U40: Can Sooners get to 10-2 with this RB situation?
Oklahoma is currently ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. That means that as long as OU wins out, they should be good for inclusion in the playoff. It also means they are in the running for a first-round home game. Carey, Josh, Eddie and George talk about the playoff hunt and more importantly, Missouri. The Tigers head into Norman trying to play the spoiler role. And there is an issue. The Oklahoma running back room has few available bodies with Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock all banged up right now. How did this happen? We also take a deep dive into the play of John Mateer. What do we attribute his struggles to? And is he for sure the guy next year for the Sooners? What role does Ben Arbuckle play in all of this? Next we talk recruiting and the impact this season is having on potential recruits. New commitment is in! It's another edition of the Unofficial 40 podcast. Wed, 19 Nov 2025 - 503 - OU heads to Alabama with playoff hopes firmly within reach
The Sooners get set to head to Alabama for one of the biggest SEC games of the season. The Sooners can likely punch their ticket to the CFB Playoffs with a win. Otherwise, it's hoping other things can fall their way. We also dive into the west side stadium expansion and what that will look like in the coming years. What about stadium capacity? What about people losing their seats? And coaching changes and buyouts have us all asking ourselves what is going on in college football. Brian Kelly suing LSU? LSU saying they never fired him? We're here for all the drama. And how much could the Sooners benefit from the uncertainty at other schools that have fired their coaches. OU is already making inroads with Penn State's recruiting class. Is there more to come? Basketball us underway and we've seen the OU women and men against quality competition already. Wed, 12 Nov 2025 - 502 - U40: Venables' depth on defense, CFP rankings and OU gameday atmosphere
The Unofficial 40 is back for the least tense episode in a while. It's a bye week and we have plenty to talk about with the first CFP rankings released last night. We also get into a discussion about the depth of the OU defense and how uncommon this team is from that perspective. How has Venables done it? And has there ever been a great cornerback at Oklahoma that people didn't complain about at one time or another? Coaches are being fired left and right. We're living in unprecedented times. We're also wondering if Jackson Arnold has a home after struggling at Oklahoma and Auburn? Where could we see him land next? Carey isn't happy that the WR position in college isn't valued higher by the Oklahoma front office. And what can the Sooners do to improve their gameday operations that Eddie and George took away from their trip to Tennessee? That and much more on another edition of the Unofficial 40. Wed, 05 Nov 2025 - 501 - What this week has taught us about where the offense is now
It's been a full week of trying to figure out what is wrong with John Mateer and Oklahoma's offense. We started out with Saturday frustrations and worked our way through players and coaches to try and find answers as to what is really happening with Mateer and the OU passing game. With a road battle with Tennessee looming, the Sooners have to get better. And the mistakes have to disappear quickly if this team is going to do anything in these next two road trips. Josh is here to talk about the recent commitment of Jahsiear Rogers, the former Penn State commitment, and some other nuggets out on the recruiting trail. Eddie gets a little basketball talk in and we talk a little about the madness all over the world of college football with mass firings happening all over. Wed, 29 Oct 2025 - 500 - U40: Can the offense keep climbing as Ole Miss comes to town?
We're back to big games in Norman as the Sooners have rebounded from their loss to Texas and seem to have found a running game. A big part of this being a big game is also a healthier hand from John Mateer even though we still don't think he's all the way back yet. We also talk about the weirdness surrounding Kendel Dolby and Jovantae Barnes as both have been absent from the lineups recently. And we know lots of rumors are flying about Dolby. It's also going to be an important recruiting weekend in Norman. And with coaches being fired left and right, could the Sooners find some room for some key 2026 prospects as most of the recruiting efforts have turned to 2027? Wed, 22 Oct 2025 - 499 - U40: Venables facing another must win situation at South Carolina
Brent Venables is no stranger to these matchups. Win, and the monkey is off your back. For now. Lose, and the seat immediately warms up. The Sooners are favored, but they're on the road. They have the defense, but they lack the run game. How much healthier will John Mateer be this week? And who do the Sooners lean on at the running back position? Wed, 15 Oct 2025 - 498 - U40: We can't figure out if Mateer will play, much less who will win
We're halfway through the week and the John Mateer news continues to confuse. Indoor practices, interesting press conference answers, good-on-good, hiding in bushes, it's part OU-TX part media frenzy this week in Norman. The guys all get together to try and make sense out of the nonsense while also trying to figure out whether OU can win this game. Expect the unexpected, but we're trying to predict off the expected. Which never seems to work out in this game. Who are some players we could see stepping up that aren't really expected? What about the Venables/Sarkisian matchup? Wed, 08 Oct 2025 - 497 - OU football returns with Michael Hawkins at the helm
Oklahoma football comes off their bye week without their starting quarterback as John Mateer had surgery last week. But that doesn't mean we're not excited to see what Michael Hawkins Jr., can do in his absence. Let's face it, Kent State is not the story this week. It's Texas. At least for the fans. We're also looking forward to Javonnie Gibson's first game as a Sooner after working to make it all the way back from a broken leg suffered last spring. Can OU run the ball against what will probably be their worst opponent of the season? And Josh is here to talk some recruiting as the Sooners appear to be on the verge of getting another commitment soon. And the gang goes around college football where we see how everyone views Oklahoma nationally right now and what teams might deserve a little skepticism. Could OU have some skeptics in the studio? John Mateer is out for at least the next few weeks and the guys are here to tell you how it all went down in the offices yesterday as we worked to track down the news and to share the context of what we have heard and what happens moving forward. It's the bye week. How will the Sooners use it to get better with Hawkins at QB? And the running game still needs a lot of work. Is Kent State the beginning or the end of Jaydn Ott as a productive member of the running back room? The SEC also released future schedules yesterday and no one saw Ole Miss landing as a permanent rival for the Sooners. We break down our thoughts on the schedule. It was a big day at the University of Oklahoma as the university unveiled their new tailgating initiative at the North Oval. OU President Joe Harroz dropped by and discussed the new tailgating area and we got to chat about the search for a new athletic director, Brent Venables giving up $1 million for revenue sharing/NIL, the west side stadium expansion and what is the deal with this Randall Stephenson guy? We also made Gabe Ikard sit down and talk about his impressions of the new tailgating area and we talked a little bit of football as well. The Oklahoma Breakdown co-host also talked with Carey about maybe doing a crossover episode in the North Oval for the Michigan game. Anyone interested? George and Carey are back together! We don't know exactly what this is going to look like Saturday but we're interested to see how it goes down. Depth Charts? We're not too caught up in who is sitting where. There are reasons. We talk about some of that. We also talk about Ben Arbuckle's debut. Will he go through some of the same issues that guy out west went through early in his Oklahoma playcalling career? Wed, 20 Aug 2025 - 489 - U40: We look at key positions at this point in fall camp
Bill Bedenbaugh spoke this week about his offensive line and Carey, Josh, Eddie and George are here to give it all a hard look. Bedenbaugh has to find the right mix of experience versus talent on the offensive line if he wants to play two star freshman. We examine all the options and give our two cents on what we could see happening. The secondary also intrigues us with the talent and the buzz coming out of camp surrounding corners who haven't played a lot. And Peyton Bowen isn't a bust. He's just been hurt most of his career. Are we going to see Bowen step up at some point and take over with Billy Bowman type play in the secondary? We are ready for the John Mateer Venmo controversy to be over and we think that it is. And stop yelling at us for writing about it! It's our job! And the wide receiver spot might be a little concerning as far as quality depth now that we look at it closer. And of course we talk more recruiting with Josh and how big the official weekend will become for the Michigan game. THE FULL BREAKDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial 40! What did we take from the preseason get together? First off, we're shocked by how big Jaydn Ott actually is as a running back. We pine over him for a bit during the show. We're also not going into a doom pod, but we're questioning as much as possible about the makeup of this team heading into the season. How big is this year? It's as big as it gets for the future direction of the program. We try and work our way through various positions and how we see things playing out this season. From the offensive line to the secondary we have plenty of questions. It's a full on preseason think tank going on in this episode. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial 40! Sooners are back on the practice field! 22:48 - Jaydn Ott certainly looks the part 30:00 - Happy thoughts on a dominant OU defensive line 38:00 - Recruiting 55:00 - Back around to the magnitude of the 2025 season Learn more about your ad choices. Thu, 31 Jul 2025 - 486 - U40: Coaches luncheon, offensive hopium and NIL changes
It's a busy day as Josh is back from vacation and Carey and Eddie spent the afternoon at the OU coaches luncheon where Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle and Todd Bates talked some OU football to raise money for Fostering Futures. Ben Arbuckle got to talk about his receivers and the offensive line while there was plenty of praise for some key defenders by Brent Venables and Todd Bates. We also had some breaking news mid-pod as Donald Trump announced an executive order for NIL. And Josh was back from vacation to catch us up on the latest in recruiting. Thu, 24 Jul 2025 - 485 - U40: Breaking down what we learned from SEC Media Days
Brace yourselves Sooner fans. There is a member of the Scoop crew who is high on the hopium after SEC Media Days. We take a look back at what we learned from OU's trip to Atlanta for talking season. And we learned that a lot of national media is high on the Sooners heading into 2025. Granted, hearts have been broken around here and we're coming off one of the worst seasons in recent OU history. But are the national people seeing something we're just not allowing ourselves to see? John Mateer was definitely one of the biggest stars in Atlanta. We've catch up on recruiting with Josh and find out what's left the rest of the way. Is OU trying to crack open some opportunities with players already looking elsewhere? It's just a massive edition of the Unofficial 40 with plenty of talk throughout about the upcoming season. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the U40! Thu, 17 Jul 2025 - 484 - U40: Things are changing inside the OU athletics department
Carey, Eddie and George reconvene after a long week of surprises and press conferences. And we're diving head first into what we feel is going to happen inside the OU athletics department. Football is a beast of it's own, but there were a lot of other coaches at Joe Castiglione's retirement press conference that are left wondering where they stand in the new world order without Castiglione at the helm. We talk about the power structure of OU's athletics department moving forward. What does OU need that they don't have? Do they know what they need? Or is that for the next AD to decide. And where with this new AD come from? Intercollegiate athletics, or from the outside world, like business or marketing? THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the U40! Wed, 09 Jul 2025 - 483 - A big takeaway from George's upcoming John Mateer series
We're back for another episode as the Thunder euphoria has died down. You're welcome Mavs fans who also listen. It's July so we're hanging on and hoping for a quick return of football. Today we caught up with George on his visit with John Mateer as he's ready to run an extensive series on OU's QB after talking to Mateer, family members, former coaches, analysts, everybody. We're not giving away anything, but we have seen the nearly hour long transcript and George has previewed some of the quotes for us. And we have one big takeaway about John Mateer. We also hit the recruiting trail and give our thoughts on some of the OSU wins over OU on the recruiting trail. And we also ask Josh to look back on his biggest impression about summer camps and offers. Are the Sooners being too aggressive? Or not aggressive enough? Wed, 02 Jul 2025 - 482 - U40: Did a red hot John Mateer help land Bowe Bentley?
It may not have been something that was aesthetically pleasing to us, but the Jaden O' Neal/Bowe Bentley worked out as we believe Ben Arbuckle wanted. We are left to wonder, how much did John Mateer play a role in swinging Bentley to OU over LSU? A Fong Bomb that caught everyone's attention. We finally make Eddie happy and get into the Thunder parade discussion as Carey, Eddie and George all were in OKC for the big event. We're also looking at the wide receiver position in 2026 and how it could all play out. And a little more conversation about how things are going in the front office with Jim Nagy & Co. Wed, 25 Jun 2025 - 481 - U40: Bowe Bentley at Elite 11, OU loses OL commit
Carey is trying to jinx the Thunder right from the start this week. But we quickly get into the news of the day for recruiting. And that is the decommitment of Will Conroy who flips to North Carolina. We also talk some Elite 11 and what performing well at the Elite 11 has meant over the years. Spoiler, it sometimes means nothing, sometimes it does. Josh talks about the upcoming BBQ recruiting weekend and we're trying to let you know we're not the ones pumping out all the John Mateer hype. We've barely reached peak offseason so that means time to talk OU's schedule. Also some baseball, some hoops and some softball. 0:00 - Welcome back to the U40! Wed, 11 Jun 2025 - 479 - U40: Stickball is somehow over. Time for summer camp season
It's almost impossible to believe. The OU softball season and baseball season have come to an end. Really within hours of each other. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a productive year for the softball team and this team took an entirely new roster back to the WCWS and was just a run away from being back in the championship series. Baseball might have had some more issues. And they didn't make it past the regional round. We discuss what's next for both. We're fired up for the Thunder being in the NBA Finals, so forgive us a little Finals matchup talk. And Josh is heading back to Oklahoma for another big summer camp tomorrow. Oh yeah, Bowe Bentley is visiting this weekend as well and then we have another huge week of summer camps after that one. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the U40! Thu, 29 May 2025 - 477 - U40: Making it through May and getting ready for high school tour
It's May and we're struggling. Welcome to probably the most random podcast we've done in a while. George is back from wedding vacation, baseball and softball are in full swing and recruiting is getting ready to take the stage as Josh heads to Oklahoma next week for a full tour of the best talent in the Sooner state. The Sooners are actually in the running for a legitimate high school tight end and they've made a new offer to a 2026 running back. We've got some football talk regarding impact players for 2025, but we've also got the latest on how to make more money because George thinks we're leaving a lot of money on the table. A Scooper has also trolled both Carey and Josh by purchasing certain things on his wedding registry. Yes. It's a weird pod. Embrace the awkwardness. Wed, 21 May 2025 - 476 - U40: Sooners pick up first defender for 2026. Looking at 2025 offense
Recruiting is officially heating up after Oklahoma football picked up a commitment from Niko Jandreau, a safety from Chandler, Arizona. It's an exciting pickup because he also has another brother who is also highly regarded. Josh McCuistion is here to breakdown the latest on the recruiting trail as he and Carey are getting ready to go see Bowe Bentley this week. Big visits are also being lined up for summer camp. We also examine the OU offense and get into how we see this offensive line developing early in the 2025 season. And somehow we go down the rabbit hole of how awful last season's offense was. It's the offseason. Officially. George will also be living in Destin, Florida, the rest of this month for weddings and SEC meetings. And we won't have to listen to his panic in the office over the Thunder, who are doing just fine after a big win over Denver last night. Wed, 14 May 2025 - 475 - U40: Why is recruiting so quiet?
It's a stressful time in the office as the Thunder are down 0-1 and George's marriage may be riding on the outcome of tonight's game. We talk with Josh about what the commitment of Jared Curtis to Georgia means for OU's QB recruiting saga. Coaches are out on the road and making new offers all over the place. Are Jim Nagy and the OU personnel department looking to reshape this roster with different types of athletes? And what is up with the snails pace of recruiting commitments so far this offseason? We also welcome Eddie back from Mexico as he was stranded at a beautiful resort when he got the big On3 news last week. Carey also hates everything on George's wedding registry and wants to go off catalog to get a wedding gift. Go-carts are also potentially disastrous for a bachelor party. Thu, 01 May 2025 - 473 - U40: Arbuckle should be allowed to pick his own QB
George was under the weather today so we had an OG podcast with Carey, Josh and Eddie. It's been a busy week so we kind of used this podcast to clean up our thoughts on everything that's been going on lately. David Stone and the QB decision. Why shouldn't Ben Arbuckle be able to make his own choice at who he wants his QB to be? We also talked plenty of portal and looked ahead to where the Sooners could go next. The defensive line is a real strength that we probably haven't talked about enough. And coaches are all over the country visiting some of the top prospects on their board. With the announcement that Jake Maikkalu and Jaydn Ott signed with Oklahoma football the day before the portal officially opened, OU made a big statement that they are willing to do what it takes to get back on track. We talk about what the signings mean for the Sooners as well as what the portal still could hold in store. We also dive into where we are as a sport right now with Nico Iamaleava and why we feel better about OU's approach with Jim Nagy in this age of chasing the bag. Josh recaps the Houston Under Armour and we talk about Ben Arbuckle's 2007 quarterback and how far along he is in that process as well as where the Sooners stand with one of their top 2006 recruiting prospects. High School spring football gets set to start at a lot of schools in Texas. Wed, 16 Apr 2025 - 471 - U40: The height of spring arrives with the Crimson... Combine???
The Unofficial 40 is back and we're ready for another magical time of the year as OU puts on their spring finale, the Masters is underway and we're on the verge of recruiting awesomeness with high school spring football and summer camps. But we've also had some interesting developments in the NIL space with the House vs. NCAA settlement being in the spotlight on Monday. What comes out of that? And does that bring us any closer to settling the mess that is NIL? Meanwhile, hoops is paying out some real money and landing big players in the portal. And we talk about the Crimson Combine. Wed, 09 Apr 2025 - 470 - U40: Biggest positives taken away from 4 football viewings
The gang is back in the studio together on the heels of another football practice viewing. The linebacker group appears to be stacking some depth at the position even with the losses of Danny Stutsman to the NFL and Jaren Kanak to tight end. That's because Sammy Omosigho appears to be transitioning to the MIKE linebacker spot quite well. And players continually rave about Kendal Daniels being on campus. We also got to see some one-on-one battles but the Internet commentary might have been a little over the top after people saw the video. We have observations about Ben Arbuckle, Kevin Wilson and Brent Venables and how they react to things during practices. We also talk Trae Young being named an assistant GM for the basketball program and what that job description might look like. Josh is in with the latest in the recruiting world, especially the QB position. We also take a stab at who OU might look to land in the transfer portal this spring. Josh is back from his cruise and in his absence, OU lost a running back battle to Texas A&M for Jonathan Hatton. Where does OU stand at the running back position? Could they be looking to the portal for their next big bruiser out of the backfield? Jennie Baranczyk also pulled off one of the biggest commitments in OU women's basketball history when Aaliyah Chavez, the nation's No. 1 player, committed to OU yesterday. And it seems more and more likely that Porter Moser will return to OU unless some things change quickly. How can OU improve their men's NIL to truly compete with the big boys? And we've got more impressions about the team after another viewing session on Tuesday. We also got to talk to several players after practice. You'll hear our impressions on the attitude of this team and the development of the offense. OU baseball has won both of its SEC series so far this season but it's about to get a lot tougher. Wed, 19 Mar 2025 - 467 - U40: Breaking down everything we've seen and heard about spring practices
Spring practices are in full spring as we've now had two viewing sessions and a Pro Day to take in since last week. Carey, Josh, Eddie and George breakdown what they've witnessed out on the practice fields and what they've been hearing behind the scenes. We go over the newcomers that have stood out, the players fans want to see more of that have been on campus, like Davon Mitchell, and basically cover our impressions from every position group up to this point. Some players we thought were injured or limited are getting more action than we expected. We dive deep into what we're seeing from the offensive line and talk about what the starting lineup could look like coming out of spring. It's better to just dive into the podcast and hear for yourself. Josh updates with some recruiting updates and the guys were really impressed seeing Zane Row out at practice Monday. Kid is getting bigger and bigger every time we see him. We also talk about Trace Ford's impressive day out at Pro Day. Wed, 12 Mar 2025 - 466 - U40: OU football's General Manager is probably a little bit different than most
Oklahoma football introduced Jim Nagy as Oklahoma's new General Manager. And Carey says there is way more to OU's vision than most college programs right now. We talk about our impressions of Nagy's approach and what he had to say yesterday. Brent Venables also spoke to the media for the first time since the Armed Forces Bowl. He dropped some injury news and we have plenty to say about that as well. John Mateer took to the podium and his comments gave people a first look at who he really is. So who is he? Brent's explanation about cancelling the spring game did make a lot of sense. But some of us still think it would have been smarter to put together some type of game for the good of OU's pocket books, especially with OU needing as much money as possible for revenue sharing and NIL. Josh updates us on the latest in recruiting and with Future Freaks coming up. Also, can Porter Moser save his job? What does it mean if the men's basketball team makes the NCAA Tournament? Could he still be fired? Should he? We break down everything spring in this edition of the Unofficial 40. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the U40! Spring football has begun. Thu, 06 Mar 2025 - 465 - U40: Jim Nagy is OU's new General Manager. We break it down.
OU announced they have hired former Executive Director of the Senior Bowl, Jim Nagy, to fill their General Manager role for OU football. Carey, Josh, Eddie and George are here to breakdown the hire and what happens next. Wed, 26 Feb 2025 - 464 - U40: Go away ice and freezing temps. It's time for spring sports
The ice has cleared from the roads and we were finally back in the studio for a marathon edition of the Unofficial 40. The SEC and Big Ten are trying to take control of the College Football Playoff. Are we OK with that? The baseball team is off to a strong start. But we are looking forward to seeing more. Got warmer Oklahoma! And we dive back into the basketball situation. Is the panel unanimous on moving on from Porter Moser? Josh is here to talk recruiting and new info since the Monday Recruiting Report. We also discuss Steve Wiltfon's new intel surround OU QB target Bowe Bentley. Fri, 21 Feb 2025 - 463 - U40: Who is on the hottest seat in the athletic department
The guys gather back after a freeze took over OKC on Wednesday and we're airing grievances. Men's basketball is falling off a cliff once again, so where do things stand with Porter Moser? And with that said, where do things stand with Joe Castiglione. With Brent Venables coaching for his job in 2025, how far behind is Castiglone? The guys discuss where everything currently stands in the athletic department. We're also breaking down what has gone wrong with the OU basketball program. How much has a lack of NIL hurt OU hoops? And who would even take over the job at Oklahoma the way things are. It also seems like the new entertainment district is dead with a new mayor taking over in Norman. Thu, 13 Feb 2025 - 462 - U40: Could the OU spring football game disappear?
With just one more football game left, we're about to officially hit the offseason. But the Thunder are getting back Chet Holmgren Friday night! In other OU news, signing day has come and gone and we wonder how coaches and front offices will co-exist in the recruiting game. OU fans were criticized by the SEC announcers during the OU-Auburn basketball game and it sent us down a rabbit hole of exciting OU basketball teams over the years. We also talk about the future of spring football games. George used to cover the NFL and we talk about NFL offseasons vs. college offseasons and how they might start looking more and more similar. There is a framework being worked on by members of the Power 4 conferences to rein in NIL and make things more manageable for colleges. But there is still so much work to be done to make NIL what it was supposed to be. And can it ever really be what it was supposed to be? And happy Superbowl weekend everybody! Whether the Chiefs or Eagles win, there will be Sooners on one side taking home a NFL Championship. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the U40! Thu, 06 Feb 2025 - 461 - U40: More from OU's big recruiting weekend, latest on staff hires
The Sooners are hitting the recruiting trail and making a mad dash to make big impressions. And it looks like they are. Coaches are all over the country making visits to homes and high schools. And even though Brent Venables doesn't have an official defensive coordinator, it's not slowing him or his staff down from making good impressions on defensive talent. But the surprise so far is what Ben Arbuckle and the offensive staff have been doing on the recruiting trail. After a very successful junior day, the Sooners picked up a commitment from 4-star WR Daniel Odom. Are they close on another big time pass rusher? We also delve into OU's build of a personnel department with a General Manager. The process is underway. What to expect? We've got that too. We've got some hoops talk and of course some updates on George's wedding. And it appears betrayal is in the air as one key member of the Scoop staff has already said he won't be coming. Wed, 22 Jan 2025 - 459 - U40: We're back talking Jim Knowles
The gang is back as we've seen plenty of reaction to us naming Jim Knowles as a potential candidate for the open defensive coordinator job. And we're here for everyone's doubts. We think it's crazy too. Josh gives his thoughts on the Navy All-American game and Ryan Fodje's day at center. We're also looking at OU's two-deep and we keep getting positive vibes about the future of the offensive line. How has OU done in the portal since it started? Josh took off to San Antonio for a day of Navy All-American bowl practices where he caught up with OU commitments Ryan Fodje and Trystan Haynes. Find out from Josh how guys performed and some of the takeaways from talking to players after practice. We recap the latest from the portal as R Mason Thomas is back and the Sooners land a couple of nice defensive additions from the portal. Which goes to speak how players are viewing the defense without a defensive coordinator. And on that subject, what about the rumors that are surfacing about Ohio State DC Jim Knowles having potential interest in coming to Norman. We talk about it, after Eddie forces Carey and George to stop being coy. We talk a little bit of hoops as the Sooners need to rebound from an embarrassing loss at Alabama. Thu, 09 Jan 2025 - 457 - U40: The future of OU football's front office is being built now
On this episode of the Unofficial 40, we are talking about the changes to Oklahoma football from a General Manager perspective. Chuck Lillie is leaving for a GM role with West Virginia and everyone wants to know what that means. We are diving into OU's plans for the future as the football program will develop a front office structure more similar to the NFL. What that means and who that affects are questions that still need to be answered. But we breakdown what we know and what that means for the future of OU football and college sports in general. With the outflow of players to the portal, we're also starting to get a feel for what the team is going to look like next season. A lot of unanswered questions there too at certain positions. But we feel pretty good about the overall strength of this roster as things stand today. One player we're still waiting on to declare his future is R Mason Thomas. He put out an interesting video today. And Michael Fasusi shined this week during Under Armour practices. Josh tells us what that means moving forward. And we have some general CFP discussion to round things out. THE FULL RUNDOWN FOLLOWS BELOW: 0:00 - Welcome back to the Unofficial40! It's the SchwabMeat.com Unofficial 40. We've been a little all over the place with podcasts lately, so here we are again. Zac Alley has left Brent Venables for West Virginia. The gang is here to breakdown what happened as we know it. What does this mean for the future and more importantly, what does this say about the direction of the program under Brent Venables? The changes in this football program are going to make things look a lot different as NIL and front office personnel become a reality. Carey and George breakdown what's happening and why that will affect everything moving forward. And other staff changes coming? We talk about potential changes in the coaching staff and on the faculty side. As things stand, Venables is going to get another year to try and fix this football program. But can it be fixed? We also talk about Joe Castiglione's role in all of this. It's an informative pod, but maybe not the easiest listen to get through all the things going on inside the OU football program. We do lighten things up with tales from Eddie and George's weddings they were attending while all this was going down. And George is taken to the court of public opinion after potentially betraying Carey after he was given Christmas gifts. Also George ran into the infamous Grimlock at his wedding.
