Learn what Scots is - and what it isn't! Explore why teaching Scots is important, and in many cases, essential. Look into practical approaches to support learners writing in Scots at BGE, reading Scots through to the Senior phase, and gaining Scots qualifications such as the SQA Scots Language Award.

This session will run for 45 minutes, and will include opportunities for participants to ask questions and debate!

This is a recording of a free online twilight session which was delivered by Dr Paula Cowan and Professor Henry Maitles of the University of the West of Scotland.  

Focusing on the findings of Holocaust educational research, they examine their implications for classroom practice in using fictional sources to teach the Holocaust. 

Particular attention is be given to young people’s understanding of current antisemitism and to teachers’ use of fictional sources in teaching the Holocaust. Reference is made to the new IHRA Recommendations for Teaching and Learning about the Holocaust.  

There has never been a results day like it in Scotland. In 2020, when exams were cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, students received grades based on teacher estimates, and a controversial moderation exercise carried out by the SQA.  

Some claim that the resulting grade adjustments were necessary to maintain the credibility of the exam system. Others claim that moderation has resulted in a disproportionate downgrading the results of students from poor socio-economic backgrounds at a higher rate than others. Are teachers biased? Are students suffering due to statistical modelling? Is this ‘sound and fury signifying nothing’, or an opportunity for reform?  

In this discussion 'critical friends' and 'sympathetic critics' alike will try to sort out the truth from the myth, and potentially propose some solutions.
