We're all investors in the share market, either directly or through our superannuation. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the markets yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark. In Shares for Beginners, you'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain key concepts of investing in the ASX, the NASDAQ, S&P500, FTSE and Dow. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for. We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term.

How is your superannuation linked to the Australian & US stock markets? It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of stocks and shares, and recommend reading "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.
I explore the basics - what a share is and how to buy one, and delve into the world of value investing, exploring strategies to identify undervalued stocks. I cover key terms like ASX (Australian Securities Exchange), CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), ASX200 (Australian Securities Exchange 200 Index), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), LICs (Listed Investment Companies), Managed Funds, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), as well as the difference between passive and active investing.
There are many traps for beginner investors and it's good to be aware of the role and risks of options, warrants, CFDs (Contracts for Difference), day trading, bonds, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the difference between fundamental and technical analysis.
Tracking your investments is essential, and it's important to know about watchlists, understand dividends and dividend reinvestment plans (DRPs), while exploring robo-investing, fixed income, index funds, and micro-investing.
I cover topics like trading and buying shares, making money from shares, and understanding the Australian stock exchange. What is the role of stockbrokers and online brokers and how to buy and sell shares.
I've interviewed industry experts and collaborated with Superhero, Stockspot, Caleb Silver Investopedia, Spencer Jakab from The Wall Street Journal, Pearler, Sharesight, Magellan, Saxo, Morningstar, QAV, Equity Mates, Owen Rask, Strawman, Motley Fool, Stockopedia, Betashares, Vanguard, Van Eck, Roger Montgomery, Tony Kynaston, Gemma Dale, Betsy Westcott, Molly Benjamin, Liz Tian, Andrew Baxter, Simon Ree, Wisr, Ladies Finance Club, Strong Money Australia, Captain Fi, Fred Schebesta, Kylie Purcell, Australian Shareholders' Association, Jessica Amir, Jordan Eliseo, Shani Jayamanne, Vic Jokovic, Scott Phillips, Mark Monfort, Andrew Page, and Claude Walker.

Wed, 09 Sep 2026 - 32min - 473 - AI for Smarter Investing: Nathan Hood on Red Flags, Sentiment & Better Research
Artificial intelligence is reshaping how investors research companies, and ASA educator Nathan Hood has become one of its most practical advocates. He started with simple prompts like “give me five positives and five negatives from this announcement,” and quickly saw how well AI identified what mattered. Today, his system applies 33 red‑flag tests, balance‑sheet checks, technical indicators, and sentiment scoring across a universe of 600 ASX stocks.
During the episode he mentioned 4DX as a high red‑flag stock. After reviewing his data, he clarified that BAP and LOT actually top the list with 17 red flags each, while 4DX has six.
Listeners can also use the SUMMIT2026 code to access discounted tickets to the Queensland Investor Summit.
Nathan is happy to be contacted at asxwizard@gmail.com.

While many investors think of gold as a hedge or a safe haven, gold miners are not the same as physical gold. They are businesses -with revenue, costs, margins, management teams, and operational risks. Using TYKR’s analysis, we explore how many of the companies inside GDX are rated “On Sale,” how many are overpriced, and what that means for long‑term investors. Sean also breaks down the important distinction between wealth building and wealth protection. ETFs, index funds and mutual funds are excellent tools for protecting wealth, but they’re not always the best vehicles for long-term compounding. We also discuss why gold often trades flat when broader markets rally, and why investors should be cautious about assuming recent performance will continue.

Fri, 13 Feb 2026 - 22min - 439 - This Signal Predicts Crashes Before They Happen – Vincent Randazzo | ViewRight Advisors
My guest this week is Vincent Randazzo, founder of ViewRight Advisors and creator of the Defender Program. Vincent draws on over a century of market data to help investors manage risk in volatile markets. He empowers beginners and advisors to protect portfolios while capturing growth, without timing every move. Vincent entered the industry in 2002, right into a bear market. This shaped his views on real markets versus textbook averages. He built Defender as a rules-based system that adjusts stock exposure based on market conditions. It examines signs of strength or weakness and dials exposure up or down. In healthy markets, stay fully invested. When conditions deteriorate, reduce exposure to limit losses.

Fri, 30 Jan 2026 - 16min - 435 - Beginners Guide: How to Invest in Australian Biotech Stocks 2025-2026
My guest this week is Jason Segal, the Armchair Analyst. Jason covers the biotech and small-cap stock sector. Jason defines the "bet" for each company: how investors make money at the current price, plus the risks. The U.S. market dominates due to FDA approvals and high drug sales. Companies license rights elsewhere but hold U.S. rights for big payoffs.

Tue, 27 Jan 2026 - 40min - 434 - Weekend Watchlist: AMTD (NYSE: AMTD) – Ultra-Cheap at 0.77x Cash Flow | QAV Stock Pick Breakdown
In this Weekend Watchlist episode, I chat with Cameron from the QAV Investing Podcast to dive deep into AMTD IDEA Group (NYSE: AMTD) – a wildly undervalued stock trading at just 0.77x price to operating cash flow and a massive 96% discount to book value! If the books are to be believed...
Using Tony Kynaston's proven QAV methodology (which has delivered double market returns over 30+ years), we break down why this diversified conglomerate (media, entertainment, luxury hospitality, fintech) topped the US buy list this week – despite controversies, meme-like volatility from its AMTD Digital (NYSE: HKD) spinoff, legal dramas, and a colourful CEO history.
Is AMTDa hidden gem or too risky? We focus purely on the fundamentals: ultra-low valuation, strong cash generation, and QAV checklist scores. Not investment advice – just transparent value stock picking education!
Discover how to pick winning stocks and beat the S&P 500 with Tony Kynaston's proven QAV (Quality at Value) investing methodology.
It's a systematic checklist for identifying undervalued quality companies, timing buys and sells with a "three-point trend line" and avoiding market noise. QAV Americahas delivered 64% returns since September 2023 vs. the S&P 500's 54%, perfect for beginners and pros seeking long-term compounding.

Fri, 23 Jan 2026 - 21min - 433 - CEO Thomas Lamb: Nuclear's Comeback and the Stocks to Watch | Myriad Uranium Corp.
My guest this week is Thomas Lamb, CEO of Myriad Uranium Corporation. Thomas brings a unique background to the table—he started in classics and law before diving into mining. We discussed his journey from building a gold producer in Mexico to leading uranium projects in the US after a pivot from Niger due to a military coup.
Thomas explained the uranium sector's dynamics. The world produces about 160 million pounds annually but consumes 200 million, with stockpiles dwindling. This drives prices from $30 to $75 per pound. Kazakhstan leads production at 43%, while the US consumes 50 million pounds but produces under 1 million. Australia hosts the largest deposit at Olympic Dam.

Mon, 12 Jan 2026 - 33min - 430 - Summer Repeat - Tony Kynaston | Quality at Value
Tony Kynaston is a former senior executive of companies like Coles and Shell. He started investing in the stock market 30 years ago and developed a simple checklist methodology (by studying people like Warren Buffett) that allowed him to retire from his corporate career at age 43 and become a professional investor. And he’s done pretty well since then. The average return on his portfolio over the last 20 years has been 19.5% per annum – double the ASX index. QAV stands for QUALITY AT VALUE. Tony's approach is to use a checklist to find companies that are performing well (quality) but which can also be bought at a discount (value). It's basically what is usually called "value investing".
More info at https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/kynaston
TONY KYNASTON is a multi-millionaire professional investor. Thanks to the checklist system he developed, the average return on his portfolio over the last 20 years has been 19.5% pa. Tue, 30 Sep 2025 - 44min - 417 - Michael Kemp - Avoiding the Rocks of Investing Under-Performance | Repeat Episode
Repeat Episode. Have been busy this week at the ASA QLD Invstor Summit on the Gold Coast. Saw Michael Kemp again and thought that this episode bore a repeat for all of the great investing insights.
What does an epic poem written around 700BC tell us about investing? How are investors tempted to steer their money onto the rocks of investing underperformance? My guest is Michael Kemp, author of The Ulysses Contract.
There's plenty of great lessons in this interview & much more in the book. There's a lot to avoid but as Michael says: "Don't be discouraged by all the negative arguments I'm putting forth. I don't believe you need to become a champion to become a really good investor. Market returns are fantastic returns as long as you achieve them. Don't try and shoot for the stars cuz you're probably full flat on your face. But if you accept that you're gonna be delivered market returns and you are patient, then market returns can be spectacular returns given the power of compounding."

Tue, 26 Aug 2025 - 52min - 412 - Challenge Your Brain | Michael Kemp Author
In this episode I chat with Michael Kemp, author of three investment books—Creating Real Wealth, Uncommon Sense, and The Ulysses Contract. Our conversation was inspired by Michael’s presentation at the 2025Australian Shareholders Associationconference, diving deeply into the quirks of human psychology and how they shape our investing decisions. Our brains are wired for survival in a prehistoric world, often leading us astray in modern financial markets. Michael pointed out that our ancestors needed to make snap judgments to avoid becoming a predator’s lunch. This instinct to form quick beliefs based on minimal evidence was life-saving back then but can be disastrous for investors today.

Tue, 20 May 2025 - 45min - 397 - Mastering Intrinsic Value - Tony Kynaston | QAV Investing
My guest in this episode is the always welcome Tony Kynaston from QAV. Today, we dove into intrinsic value and company valuations.
Tony explained valuation as a heat map. No single number pins down a company’s worth. He uses multiple methods to gauge value. Companies get valued by assets or earnings. Think of your house—it’s valued by comparing recent sales in your area. A coffee shop works the same way. Its assets, like the premises or equipment, have comparable values. Earnings matter too. Tony uses a discounted cash flow to estimate how long it takes to recover the asking price.

This is a fun conversation with Tobias Bucks, Portfolio Manager of Global Small Caps at Ausbil, that turned out to be one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve ever had. Tobias has a unique background in social anthropology, bringing a perspective to investing that was as refreshing as it was profound. What started as a discussion about global small cap companies evolved into a deep dive into human behaviour, cultural constructs, and the art of asking the right questions.

Wed, 23 Apr 2025 - 36min - 393 - Invest. Add. Wait - Scott Phillips from the Motley Fool
This episode features Scott Phillips from The Motley Fool. Scott’s an investment guru, a Roosters tragic, and a master at cutting through the noise, whether it’s markets or political clown shows.
We kicked off with three simple words: Invest, add, wait. Honestly, I could’ve ended the episode right there—it’s that powerful. It’s the essence of long-term investing, a mantra that echoes Aesop’s tortoise and hare. Scott’s been at this game long enough to know there’s nothing new under the sun—Ben Graham nailed it in the 1930s, and the rest is just tweaking the recipe.

Wed, 16 Apr 2025 - 42min - 392 - Escape The Middle | Start Building Wealth Today - Todd Polke
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Todd Polke, an investment strategist with over 20 years of experience. His new book, Escape the Middle, is all about breaking free from financial mediocrity. Todd is all about designing a life you don’t need to retire from—one with meaning, choice, and purpose. For him, that includes conservation efforts for oceans and wildlife. It’s not all about money; it’s about what money lets you do for yourself and the world.

Wed, 29 Jan 2025 - 33min - 381 - Property Without Mortgage - Jack Magann | Oracle Investment Management
Many Australians find themselves priced out of the real estate market. However, there is an alternative path - Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). I sit down with Jack Magann, a portfolio manager at Oracle Investment Management, to delve into the world of REITs and their potential as a viable investment option.
REITs offer an opportunity for investors to gain exposure to commercial properties such as shopping centers, industrial properties, and data centres, without the hefty costs associated with direct property ownership. With REITs, investors can enjoy dividends and property appreciation while avoiding maintenance and interest rate burdens.

Tue, 21 Jan 2025 - 30min - 380 - Summer Repeat | Fadi Diab - The Gladiator | Avoiding Doom
In a market rife with complexity and unpredictability, how do you carve out a path to consistent profitability by managing risk and securing gains? Fadi Diab, is known as The Gladiator on X (FKA Twitter). He's a seasoned microcap investor who's mastered the art of risk management over profit-chasing. Fadi shares his journey from a beginner who blew up his account twice to a savvy investor who now focuses on the potential for significant wins while minimizing losses.
