- 2255 - From Child Voiceover Star to Big Brother Icon: The Rise of Mike Goldman
Mike Goldman has been the unmistakable narrator of Big Brother Australia for 25 years, but there's far more to his story than what you hear on TV.
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Mike takes Osher Gunsberg behind the scenes of one of Australia's most iconic reality television shows, sharing how he landed the role, what really happens behind the cameras and why the show's return continues to mean so much to him.
He also opens up about the secrets to building a lasting career in the entertainment industry, the importance of work ethic and why being someone people can rely on is often more valuable than talent alone.
Mike also takes Osher beyond his life in showbiz, sharing the deeply personal journey to becoming a father, including the challenges of IVF, and recounts the terrifying experience of escaping a house fire in the early hours of the morning — a moment that put everything into perspective.
It's a funny, honest and surprisingly moving conversation about family, resilience, career longevity and making the most of every opportunity.

Sun, 01 Nov 2026 - 2253 - Adult ADHD Explained: The Symptoms, Struggles and Solutions with Dr Kieran Kennedy
Is ADHD really about being distracted, forgetful or lazy? Or is there something much more complex happening beneath the surface?
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Günsberg sits down with psychiatrist and adult ADHD specialist Dr Kieran Kennedy, author of 'This Explains Everything: A Psychiatrist’s Guide to Navigating Adult ADHD', for an honest and insightful conversation about what it really means to live with ADHD.
Drawing on his own experiences with neurodivergence, Osher explores ADHD from a different perspective: what's it like to love, live or work with someone whose brain operates differently? Together, Osher and Kieramn unpack the hidden exhaustion of ADHD masking, why seemingly simple tasks can feel impossible, and how forgetfulness, procrastination and impulsivity can create tension in relationships.
They also explore the rise in adult ADHD diagnoses, misconceptions about medication, the connection between ADHD and addictive behaviours, and practical strategies for managing symptoms. Kieran also explains why understanding ADHD isn't about making excuses, but about replacing shame and frustration with empathy, responsibility and effective support.
Whether you have ADHD yourself, suspect you might, or share your life with someone who does, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective on neurodiversity and practical ways to make everyday life, and relationships, a little easier.

Tue, 27 Oct 2026 - 2252 - What Were They Thinking?: Putting Humanity First
Something a little different on this episode, in the wake of the shocking attack on independent MP Helen Haines last week.
Political violence is on the rise and there's growing division in our community - that's the danger of dehumanising people who see the world differently, or have a different background.
Instead of rushing to judgment and fuelling polarisation, we should be asking “What were they thinking?”
It's a simple questions that could help us rediscover empathy, understanding and common ground in a time when the way we treat one another matters more than ever.

Sun, 25 Oct 2026 - 2251 - From Australian Idol to Wicked: The Lessons Rob Mills Learned the Hard Way
What does it take to build a career in entertainment, overcome self-doubt and learn to back yourself? In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Günsberg sits down with Rob Mills for an honest, funny and reflective conversation about the lessons he's learned throughout his career, from his early days on Australian Idol to becoming one of Australia's leading musical theatre performers.
Rob opens up about the fear of not being good enough, how he learned to embrace uncomfortable challenges, and how committing to the work helped him grow into the performer he is today. He shares the story of being cast in the Australian production of Wicked, including the nerve-racking audition that nearly made him walk out, and explains why embracing embarrassment, asking for help and continually developing new skills are essential to personal and professional growth.
The conversation also explores the realities of working in the performing arts, from the uncertainty of a freelance career to the discipline required to keep improving. Rob also reflects on mental health, the importance of normalising conversations about how we're really feeling, and why men in particular need to become more comfortable opening up and seeking support.
Beyond the stage, Rob and Osher discuss the changing music industry, the challenges facing live entertainment, and why streaming has made it harder for artists to build sustainable careers. And as he considers the next chapter of his life, Rob also reflects on fatherhood, mentoring younger performers and finding new ways to channel his energy and experience.
This is a conversation about ambition, vulnerability, creativity and the courage to keep showing up — even when it seems terrifying.

Sun, 18 Oct 2026 - 2249 - What Every Parent Needs to Know About Raising Boys in 2026 with Dr Justin Coulson
What does it really mean to raise good men in today’s world?
In this important and timely conversation, psychologist, author and parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson joins Osher Günsberg to explore the challenges of raising boys in an age of social media, online influencers and increasingly distorted ideas about masculinity. From the impact of smartphones and the pursuit of online status to the troubling messages boys are exposed to about women, relationships and pornography, Justin explains why parents need to pay closer attention to what their sons are seeing, hearing and learning online — and how those influences can shape their behaviour.
Justin also shares practical ways to help boys develop empathy, self-control, confidence and a strong moral compass. He explains why healthy masculinity is about using strength to make others feel safer and stronger, why connection matters more than constant correction, and how parents can create opportunities for meaningful conversations about respect, consent and responsibility. They also explore the importance of positive male role models, helping boys find purpose through meaningful challenges, and preparing teenagers to make better decisions when faced with peer pressure.
If you’re raising boys, navigating the teenage years or wondering how we can help the next generation of men grow into kind, respectful and capable adults, this is a conversation worth having.

Sun, 11 Oct 2026 - 2247 - Josh Pyke on Panic Attacks, Parenting and the Future of Australian Music
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Gunsberg sits down with acclaimed Australian musician, author and father Josh Pyke for a wide-ranging conversation about anxiety, parenting, creativity, technology and the future of music.
Josh opens up about his experience with anxiety, including the moment he had to walk off stage in the middle of a panic attack. He shares what he has learned about changing his relationship with anxiety, rather than constantly trying to fight or escape it.
The conversation also explores raising children in an increasingly overwhelming digital world, and Josh explains why he and his wife have chosen to keep social media out of their children's lives, and why protecting curiosity, imagination and genuine connection matters more than ever.
As chair of the PPCA, Josh also offers a fascinating perspective on the changing music industry, from streaming and royalties to the rise of AI-generated music. He discusses the importance of ensuring artists are properly compensated and their work is used with consent, while questioning what could happen to Australian music and culture if human creativity becomes harder to discover and support.
Along the way, Josh reflects on songwriting, children's books, collaboration and the mysterious magic that happens when creativity clicks. It's an honest and thoughtful conversation about anxiety, fatherhood, technology, art and what we might lose if we stop making space for distinctly human creativity.

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 2246 - Two Easy Ways To Fall Asleep That You Probably Haven't Tried Before
How do you switch off a busy brain when it’s time to sleep?
It's not an easy question to answer because there's no one-size-fits-all solution. But if you've had trouble getting a good night's rest, I have two hacks for you to try you may not have heard of before.
This episode is inspired by my seven-year-old son and the power of asking “why?” five times - a simple technique that can help us get beneath the surface of a problem and understand what’s really going on.
I share two techniques that I’ve found surprisingly effective: counting backwards to give the brain a sense of certainty, and cognitive shuffling, which uses random words and mental images to stop the brain from trying to solve problems when it should be sleeping.
This is an episode you can put on as you go to bed, and hopefully I can inspire your brain to relax, allowing you to drift off into a better night's sleep.
Did it work? Let me know via the links below.

Sun, 04 Oct 2026 - 2245 - How to Burn Bright Without Burning Out with Nick Petrie
Is the way we work actually making us less productive, more stressed and increasingly disconnected from ourselves?
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Gunsberg is joined by performance and workplace expert Nick Petrie to explore why burnout, stress and rumination have become such defining features of modern work — and what we can do about them.
Nick shares insights from his own experience, including being diagnosed with stomach cancer at just 27 while playing professional rugby in Japan, and explains how the experience taught him about the difference between pressure, stress and rumination. He reveals why our brains can become trapped in cycles of thinking about problems rather than solving them, and how learning to recognise those patterns can help us regain control.
The conversation also explores the changing world of work and the impact of AI. Rather than necessarily giving us more time, Nick argues that new technology can increase expectations and create an even greater need for boundaries, focus and recovery.
Nick also introduces a different approach to productivity: “pulse more than hustle.” Instead of trying to operate at maximum intensity all day, Nick explains how alternating between different modes of work, protecting periods of deep focus and understanding when your brain performs at its best can lead to more sustainable performance.
Osher and Nick also discuss career reinvention, the importance of adapting when the skills that once made you successful are no longer enough, and why learning to switch off may be one of the most important skills in the modern workplace.
It's a practical conversation about burnout, resilience, productivity, AI, overthinking and the future of work — and how to build a career and life that can actually be sustained.

Sun, 27 Sep 2026 - 2243 - From X Factor Winner To Multi-Platinum Selling Artist: The Struggles Behind Dami Im's Success
Dami Im one of Australia’s most distinctive and accomplished voices. But there's a deeper story to her success.
Arriving in Brisbane from South Korea as a nine-year-old, she grew up navigating life between cultures, and eventually went on to win The X Factor Australia and build a hugely successful career as a singer and songwriter. But behind the bright lights and screaming fans was a very human struggle with insecurity, self-doubt and the feeling that perhaps she didn’t quite belong.
In this conversation, Dami opens up about the people who believed in her when she struggled to believe in herself, including the extraordinary mentorship she received from Dannii Minogue. Dami and Osher discuss about what it means to take ownership of your achievements, the pressure to be perfect, and how the discipline she learned through music has shaped her life.
Then they go deeper — unpacking growing up as an immigrant in Australia, finding belonging through community and faith, the changing influence of Korean culture around the world, and the lessons Dami wants to pass on to her own children. And perhaps most importantly, they talk about the challenge of building a career and pursuing your passions while also being a mum, and learning that being proud of yourself doesn’t have to mean losing your humility. It’s a really honest conversation about identity, resilience, ambition, family and finding the confidence to say: 'I deserve to be here'.
Enjoy this chat with Dami Im.

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 - 2242 - The Death of the Australian Music Industry: Why It's So Hard for Musicians to Make a Living
What happened to Australian music — and what does its future look like?
In this deeply personal episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Gunsberg takes a passionate look at the changing economics of the music industry and asks what the decline of the traditional music business has meant for Australian artists, audiences and culture.
Drawing on his decades working across Australian radio, television, live music and the recording industry, Osher traces the transformation from the era of CDs, radio royalties and record-label development to Napster, digital piracy and today's streaming economy. He explores how the business model that once allowed labels to take risks on emerging artists has been replaced by an environment where algorithms, playlists and streaming revenue can make it increasingly difficult for new Australian musicians to break through.
Osher also looks at the disappearance of major Australian music festivals and the decline of live music venues, arguing that these spaces were about far more than entertainment — they created shared cultural experiences that brought thousands of strangers together. He questions what happens to Australia's cultural identity when there are fewer opportunities for local musicians to develop, perform and connect with audiences.
It's an in-depth look at the shifting trends in entertainment over the years, and how the internet and streaming has stripped away the ability for artists to make a viable living doing what they love.

Sun, 20 Sep 2026 - 2241 - How Jason Dunn Still Chose Gratitude After Surviving Multiple Near-Death Experiences
Do you think you could still feel grateful after breaking 10 ribs and fracturing your skull?
In this powerful conversation, Jason Dunn opens up about the accidents, fears, failures and life experiences that ultimately forced him to ask a bigger question: What am I actually capable of?
Jason reflects on surviving multiple serious cycling accidents, and explains how gratitude became a conscious choice rather than simply a feeling. He shares the moment he realised he had been living far below his potential — and why discovering your purpose can become the driving force that helps you push through fear, adversity and setbacks.
Drawing on Stoic philosophy and lessons from remarkable people throughout history, Jason explores self-mastery, discipline, resilience, vulnerability and the importance of stillness. He challenges the idea that simply surviving hardship automatically makes us stronger, instead describing resilience as the ability to stop seeing an obstacle as a wall and start seeing it as a door.
He also shares the extraordinary story of confronting his lifelong fear of drowning. Unable to swim a single lap, Jason eventually pushed himself into the water, quit smoking, trained for an Ironman and ultimately completed one of the most demanding endurance challenges imaginable.
From overcoming fear to avoiding regret, Jason explains why planning, purpose and consistent action can transform the way we approach our lives — and why the greatest risk may be reaching the end of your life wishing you had taken the harder, more meaningful path.

Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 2240 - Harry Garside on Strength, Vulnerability and Breaking the Rules of Masculinity
What does it really mean to be strong? And how much of the way we think about masculinity is something we’ve consciously chosen — rather than simply inherited?
Harry Garside is an Olympic boxing medallist who has also done ballet, and happens to paint his nails. Two typically juxtaposed traits that saw him both criticised and celebrated when he was thrust into the spotlight at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2024, he joined me for a powerful conversation about masculinity, vulnerability, confidence and the transformative power of discomfort.
Harry reflects on how boxing gave him a deeper understanding of what his body was capable of, helping him develop self-confidence and a sense of security. He also shares what he has learned from working with young people, particularly the boys who appear the loudest or toughest in the room but may be carrying stories that nobody has taken the time to hear.
We explore Harry’s fascination with deliberately stepping outside his comfort zone. For more than five years, he has undertaken monthly “uncomfortable challenges” — from going without speaking to improv, makeup and asking strangers for money — using discomfort as a way to learn, grow and challenge himself.
We also discuss the traditional rules we inherit about what it means to be a man, and whether some of those rules still serve us.

Sun, 13 Sep 2026 - 2239 - How to Build Unshakeable Confidence and Silence Your Inner Critic with Dr Cindra Kamphoff
How do you build confidence when the voice in your head keeps telling you that you’re not good enough?
In this episode, Osher Gunsberg is joined by performance psychologist and mental performance coach Dr Cindra Kamphoff, author of 'The Confidence Habit' and executive performance coach to some of the world's most successful athletes, to explore why even highly successful people can struggle with self-doubt, harsh self-talk and the fear of making mistakes.
Cindra has worked with NFL players and members of the U.S. track and field team, helping them develop the mental skills to perform under pressure. But the lessons she shares aren't just for athletes—they're for anyone who has ever questioned themselves, replayed a mistake or felt like they should be doing better.
Cindra explores the difference between our “inner critic” and our “inner coach”, and how learning to recognise and challenge negative thoughts can fundamentally change the way we see ourselves. She also shares practical tools for dealing with self-doubt, including her “truth meter” and three questions designed to help determine whether the stories we tell ourselves are actually true. She also explains why confidence isn't something you're simply born with, but a skill that can be developed, and how to recover from mistakes without allowing them to define your next performance, using her powerful “learn, burn, return” approach.
From changing negative self-talk to letting go of past failures and learning to trust yourself, this is a practical conversation about turning self-doubt into self-belief and developing the confidence to move forward - even when you don't feel confident.

Tue, 08 Sep 2026 - 2238 - 'Prepare for When, Not If': How to Be Ready for Disaster with Lucy Easthope
What would you do if the lights suddenly went out and stayed out not for an hour, but for days? Your phone is down to 5% because you've been on TikTok and who knows where the torch is?
Watching what's been happening in Tibet these last few days has been truly harrowing, and got me reflecting on one of the most powerful conversations I've ever had on this podcast - a conversation with disaster planner Lucy Easthope.
Lucy has spent more than 20 years preparing governments and communities for some of the worst events imaginable — from floods and fires to bombings, plane crashes and major infrastructure failures. Her message is surprisingly simple: we need to prepare for “when”, not “if” disaster happens.
In this conversation, Lucy explains why being prepared doesn't mean living in fear, and how a little planning can actually make us feel more calm and resilient. She shares what families can learn from disaster planning, why Australian communities have developed a stronger culture of preparedness, and why we should be having more honest conversations with our children about risk.
Lucy also challenges one of our most instinctive responses to disaster: sending 'stuff'. After a crisis, our desire to help is powerful, but donated goods can sometimes become more of a hindrance than a help. Lucy explains why cash is often the most useful donation and how organised charities can put resources where they're needed most.
And then there's panic - despite what movies often show, research suggests people caught in disasters frequently behave responsibly and look after one another. Lucy explains what actually causes panic — and why good information and sensible planning can make such a difference.
Be sure to check out my full conversation with Lucy - the link is below.

Sun, 06 Sep 2026 - 2237 - Broadcaster Christian O'Connell on panic attacks, living unscripted and making stronger connections
What happens when the version of yourself you created to succeed starts getting in the way of actually being yourself?
In this episode, broadcaster and author Christian O’Connell opens up to Osher Gunsberg about the darker side of the career he built around conversation and connection. Christian reflects on the radio persona he developed early in his career, his obsession with having the funniest show on air, and the moment that carefully constructed identity began to fall apart. In his 40s, he started having severe panic attacks in the one place he had always felt the most comfortable: the radio studio. Eventually, he sought therapy for the first time and discovered that confronting what was happening beneath the surface could change everything. He also packed up and moved his family halfway around the world from England to Australia, sparking initial backlash from radio listeners.
This conversation explores vulnerability, self-discovery and authentic human connection, including Christian's unconventional experience of physically releasing emotions during a therapy session. Christian also shares his 'WAVES' framework for better conversations, and explains why becoming less defensive, more curious and more present can transform the way we communicate with partners, children, colleagues and ourselves. There are practical tools too, including Christian's experience with breathwork and a simple breathing technique that he uses when he feels anxiety beginning to rise.
In one of the episode's most moving moments, Christian recalls how a listener named Pete sharing his bowel cancer experience on air led to a 600% rise in the return of bowel screening kits. And Christian reveals that Pete's final message became a guiding principle: “Keep up the humour, don't forget the human.”
As social media and AI increasingly changing the way we communicate, this conversation is a reminder that the things that make us human — curiosity, vulnerability, humour, presence and genuine connection — may be more important than ever.

Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 2236 - What Happens When Kids Stop Reading? Andy Griffiths Has the Answer
What makes a child want to read? And what happens when we stop trying to make childhood perfect?
In this episode, Osher Gunsberg looks back on his chat with one of Australia’s most successful children’s authors, Andy Griffiths, the award-winning creative force behind The Day My Bum Went Psycho and the much-loved Treehouse series.
Andy reflects on his early years as a high school English teacher and the lesson that shaped much of his work: children will engage with reading when we give them something they actually want to read. He explains why books offer children more than literacy — they can open up their imagination, expand their understanding of the world and provide a private escape from the rules and expectations of everyday life.
Andy also reveals how watching children choose books helped inspire the unconventional visual style of his Treehouse series of books, and how his creative partnership with illustrator Terry Denton grew from a willingness to embrace silliness, experimentation and ideas that might otherwise have been considered too strange.
The conversation also covers parenting, where Andy challenges the pressure to create the “perfect childhood”. Drawing on his own experience raising two daughters, he argues that allowing children to experience some adversity can help them develop resilience, and that 'good enough parenting' really can be good enough.
It's a funny, thoughtful and surprisingly profound conversation about books, childhood, imagination, parenting and the importance of giving kids permission to explore the world on their own terms.

Sun, 30 Aug 2026 - 2235 - The Climate Crisis Is Real, But Giving Up Isn’t an Option with Amanda McKenzie
Climate change can feel so enormous that it’s difficult to know where to start or how to stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed.
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Gunsberg speaks with climate campaigner and Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie about the realities of climate change, the progress Australia has already made, and how we can continue fighting for a better future without burning ourselves out.
Amanda has spent more than 20 years working on climate change, and she reflects on what it’s like to dedicate your life to an issue that can feel almost impossibly large. She opens up about the loss of her friend and climate scientist Professor Will Steffen, and the emotional toll of witnessing environmental change while raising young children.
The conversation also explores Amanda’s idea of “stubborn optimism” - a deliberate choice to acknowledge the seriousness of the climate crisis while still believing that people can work together to create meaningful change.
Amanda and Osher also discuss Australia’s rapid growth in renewable energy, why the economics of clean energy are changing the conversation, the potential for Australia to become a global leader in green industries, and why progress can sometimes be difficult to see while you’re living through it.
Amanda also shares practical ways to protect yourself from doom-scrolling and climate burnout. And if you’re wondering what you can actually do about climate change, Amanda’s advice is simple: start small - because you don’t have to save the world on your own. You just have to find your part of the puzzle.

Tue, 25 Aug 2026 - 2234 - What We Get Wrong When Teaching Kids About Consent with Chanel Contos
What are we actually teaching young people about consent?
In this episode, Osher looks back on his powerful conversation with Chanel Contos, where they explored how children and teenagers learn about sex, relationships, boundaries and consent — often from sources far beyond the classroom.
Chanel, whose campaign for better consent education began after thousands of young people shared their experiences of sexual assault, argues that education needs to go much further than simply teaching “no means no”. Young people need to understand empathy, recognise boundaries and learn what healthy, mutually desired relationships actually look like.
The conversation examines the influence of pornography, movies and popular culture, and how romantic storylines can normalise jealousy, coercion, obsession and controlling behaviour. Chanel also discusses the different ways boys and girls are socialised — including the pressure on girls to be accommodating and the importance of helping boys develop empathy beyond their immediate social circles.
They also explore what consent can look and sound like in real life, including the importance of paying attention to body language and creating space for someone to change their mind. As Chanel explains, consent isn't simply about hearing an explicit “no”; it is about actively checking that another person is comfortable and genuinely wants to participate.
Despite the difficult subject matter, Chanel remains hopeful. She believes sexual violence is preventable, but that doing so requires adults to have uncomfortable conversations, challenge their own assumptions and make these lessons part of everyday life.
Because teaching consent isn't a one-off conversation. It's something we teach through the small, ordinary moments in which young people learn what love, respect, boundaries and healthy relationships look like.

Sun, 23 Aug 2026 - 2233 - Former Pro Surfer Cooper Chapman on the 1% Habit That Can Transform Your Mental Health
What if happiness isn’t about achieving more, but learning to find inner peace wherever you are?
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, former professional surfer and mental health advocate Cooper Chapman shares with Osher Gunsberg the mindset shifts that transformed his life — from chasing success, external validation and results, to focusing on gratitude, mindfulness, resilience and service to others.
Cooper talks openly about the pressure of high performance, the danger of tying your self-worth to achievement, and why falling into a victim mindset can leave us feeling powerless. He explains how we can instead take responsibility, learn from setbacks and focus on what is within our control.
Cooper also explains his simple approach to mental health: small, practical habits that anyone can incorporate into everyday life. From a daily gratitude practice to spending time in nature without your phone, Cooper discusses how seemingly tiny actions can gradually retrain our minds to notice the positives. Along the way, he also shares some memorable lessons, including “get curious, not furious,” “knowledge is knowing, wisdom is doing,” and his father’s reminder that “life’s about appreciation, not expectation.”

Tue, 18 Aug 2026 - 2232 - ''Everything Happens for a Reason' Is Bullsh*t' — Quadruple Amputee Tom Nash on Reframing Adversity
Tom Nash knows what it means to have your life change in an instant. At just 19, he contracted meningococcal sepsis, fell into a coma and woke up to find his arms and legs had been amputated to save his life.
Looking back on his chat with me, Tom explores the power of reframing adversity, why positive thinking isn't about pretending everything is okay, and how learning to find a different perspective can become a skill that gets stronger with practice. He explains why he prefers “fear setting” to traditional goal setting, and why focusing on the next small milestone rather than an overwhelming end goal helped him learn to walk again with prosthetics.
Tom also challenges the idea that “everything happens for a reason”, arguing instead that we have the power to give meaning and purpose to what happens to us. From everyday frustrations to life-changing adversity, his philosophy is about distinguishing between what we can and can't control — and concentrating our energy on what is directly in front of us.

Tue, 11 Aug 2026 - 2230 - Why I don’t want Hannah Ferguson to be our Prime Minister
What does it take to stay true to your values in a political system that often rewards compromise?
In this episode, I'm looking back on my interview with Hannah Ferguson, the founder of Cheek Media who recently announces she was running as an independent candidate, challenging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler. Though this interview was recorded before she announced her political ambitions, this chat offers a fascinating glimpse into the principles that shaped her journey long before she entered the race. But the truth is - I don't want her to be Prime Minister.
Hannah shares with me why media literacy is one of the most important skills Australians can develop, how to identify bias, question the information you consume, and become a more informed citizen. She argues that democracy depends on people thinking critically rather than accepting headlines at face value.
We also explore some of the biggest political and social challenges facing Australians today, including sexual violence reform, workplace relations, housing, and protecting power over creating meaningful change. Hannah discusses her passion for making complex political issues understandable and accessible for everyone.

Sun, 09 Aug 2026 - 2229 - Leading with Sensitivity: How Elanor Boekholt-O'Sullivan Challenged 100 Years of Military Thinking
What does it really mean to lead with strength?
For decades, we've been taught that great leadership is about being loud, decisive and commanding. But what if the most effective leaders are the ones who listen first, lead with empathy and have the courage to challenge the status quo?
In this episode, Osher Günsberg sits down with former Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (and first female to be promoted to rank of lieutenant general) Elanor Boekholt-O'Sullivan, whose remarkable career has redefined what leadership can look like. Rising through one of the world's most traditional institutions, Elanor transformed military culture by proving that sensitivity, curiosity and authenticity aren't weaknesses, but powerful competitive advantages.
Drawing on more than 30 years of military service, Elanor shares how she overcame resistance, challenged outdated systems, and created lasting change by helping people rethink why they do what they do. From being the only woman aboard a warship with no accommodation for women, to inspiring a new generation of leaders to embrace vulnerability, her experiences offer lessons that apply far beyond the military.
This conversation also explores her extraordinary decision to leave the military after 32 years to take on one of the Netherlands' biggest challenges: helping solve the country's housing crisis as newly appointed Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning. Her deeply human perspective on the importance of creating not just houses, but homes, reveals why purpose should always be at the heart of leadership.
Whether you're leading a business, managing a team, raising a family or navigating your own career, this episode is packed with practical insights on resilience, change, emotional intelligence and leading with courage.

In this conversation, Tom opens up about the trauma of losing his mother as a child, what actually happens when you stop running from emotional pain, and the split-second decision at a roundabout six months into recovery that saved his life.
Whether you’re in recovery, supporting someone who is, or trying to break free from your own unhealthy cycles, Tom’s insights offer a practical map out of isolation and into a life beyond what you thought was possible.

Content warning: This episode contains discussions of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, mental health and suicide which some listeners may find distressing. Resources can be found below.
In this raw and real conversation, Harrison James joins Osher Gunsberg to tell his remarkable story of surviving years of child sexual abuse at the hands of his stepmother, overcoming unimaginable trauma, and transforming that pain into a mission that's creating lasting change within the justice system.
Harrison speaks candidly about the grooming and abuse he endured as a teenager, including fathering a child at just 15, only to have that same child ripped from his life, the devastating impact it had on his mental health, and the long road to healing. Together, they explore the many myths surrounding child sexual abuse continue that persist, particularly for male survivors, and why these conversations are essential if we are to better protect children and support victim survivors.
The discussion also shines a light on hope as Harrison shares how therapy, community, and practical tools such as writing unsent letters helped him reclaim his life. His advocacy has led to legislative reform across Australia, abolishing the use of good character references during sentencing for convicted offenders in multiple jurisdictions. It's an honest, confronting and deeply moving episode about resilience, recovery and purpose.

Tue, 28 Jul 2026 - 2226 - What we get wrong about conspiracy theorists and narcissists (with Jon Ronson)
Why are we so fascinated by the people on the absolute fringes of society?
When someone adopts a worldview that seems completely detached from consensus reality, what is the sequence of thoughts and experiences that led them there? In this episode, I’m joined by the legendary journalist, author, and documentary maker Jon Ronson. For twenty-five years, Jon has been doing the hard work of looking directly at human behaviour that most of us would prefer to avoid. Jon’s career has been defined by his ability to humanise the people we’ve been taught to fear or dismiss.
Taken from the full-length episode, here’s a few tasty morsels to chew on today including:
Why we often reward psychopathic traits by making those people our CEOs and political leaders. What happens when extreme personalities feed off each other, and how do they pull us into their orbit. How ordinary people drift into ideological bubbles, and what it takes to understand the urge to belong to a tribe. This is a fascinating, thoughtful, and very funny chat with one of the greats.

Sam Hughes isn't a name most people are familiar with. Some may know him better by the pseudonym QNTM - a software engineer turned acclaimed science fiction author known for groundbreaking novels including There Is No Antimemetics Division and Ra.

Sam reveals how he transforms complex scientific concepts into gripping stories that challenge the way we think about memory, reality, time, and the future. From his early fascination with mathematics to his career in software development, he explains how curiosity, logical thinking, and a relentless habit of asking "what if?" have shaped his creative process.
The conversation ranges from the surprising lessons hidden inside game design to the promises and dangers of artificial intelligence, social media algorithms, and the responsibilities that come with creating powerful technology. In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, Osher Günsberg sits down with life coach and author Jaemin Frazer for a thought-provoking conversation about insecurity, self-worth, identity and the stories we tell ourselves that shape our lives.
They explore Jaemin's remarkable journey from church pastor to sought-after coach, including how questioning long-held beliefs transformed the way he understands purpose, responsibility and personal freedom, and ultimately deconstructed everything he knew about his faith.
Jaemin discusses why he believes that insecurity isn't simply a lack of confidence, but the fear that our deepest doubts about ourselves might actually be true. Together, they unpack where those beliefs come from, why so many of us unknowingly sabotage our own happiness, and what it really takes to create lasting personal change.
Osher and Jaemin also discuss the hidden "secondary gains" that keep us stuck, why agency is one of the most powerful tools we have, how our childhood experiences shape adult behaviour, and what parents can do to help their children build genuine confidence.

In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, I'm revisiting a powerful conversation I had with world-renowned psychologist and author Dr Susan David about the science of emotions, resilience, and creating meaningful change.
Susan shares the ideas behind her groundbreaking work on emotional agility - the ability to accept difficult emotions, understand what they’re telling us, and respond in ways that align with our values. We explore why fighting uncomfortable feelings often makes them stronger, how simply naming our emotions can change the way we experience them, and why discomfort is an essential part of living a meaningful life.
She also offers practical tools for managing stress, anxiety, comparison, and self-doubt — including how to move from 'have to' goals to 'want to' goals, and how small habit changes through “piggybacking” can create lasting transformation.

In this powerful conversation, Osher Gunsberg sits down with journalist and author Hannah McElhinney to explore the complex world of chronic illness, medical misinformation, and what can happen when people lose trust in the systems designed to help them.
Hannah shares the deeply personal story that inspired her latest book - the loss of her cousin Lauren, and the journey to understand how someone searching for answers to chronic pain and illness could become drawn into alternative treatments, online health communities, and misinformation.
Having had his own experience with chronic pain, Osher and Hannah unpack the desperation that drives some people to seek out alternative solutions, the need to feel heard, and the longing for a diagnosis or treatment when conventional medicine doesn’t have easy answers. They also discuss health anxiety, patient mistrust, medical misogyny, systemic failures within healthcare systems, and how vulnerable people can be exploited by those offering certainty and “miracle” cures.
Hannah and Osher also explore why empathy matters when talking about health misinformation — and why understanding someone’s experience is often the first step toward actually helping them find their way back to evidence-based care.

Osher and Konrad explore the growing divide in modern political discourse (particularly surrounding left vs right polarisation), the rise of tribalism, and how social media algorithms push people into 'echo chambers'
Konrad shares why he believes Australians are actually less divided than we’re often led to believe, and why issues like political corruption, lobbying, housing affordability, and the influence of money in politics are now uniting people across the political spectrum.
They also discuss the 'revolving' door between politicians and staffers and the corporate industries they regulate, removing big money and corporate donations from politics, the dangers of treating political opponents as enemies, and the importance of empathy when engaging with people whose views differ from our own.

Tue, 23 Jun 2026 - 2216 - Enjoyment Is Efficiency: The Productivity Shift That Changes Everything
In this episode, Osher revisits one of the most impactful conversations from the show with productivity expert and bestselling author Ali Abdaal.
Ali breaks down a radically different approach to productivity — one built around enjoyment, play, and designing systems that actually work with your brain instead of against it.
Osher and Ali explore why “enjoyment is efficiency,” how stress quietly sabotages performance, and why procrastination isn’t a character flaw - it’s usually just a systems problem.
Ali also shares practical ways to make even the most mundane tasks more enjoyable, explains the difference between hardware and software problems in our lives, and reveals the simple tweaks that helped him stop wasting hours doomscrolling at night.
It's an episode packed with practical tools for anyone feeling overwhelmed, burned out, distracted, or stuck in the cycle of trying harder and getting nowhere. But there's so much more in the full chat - check out the link to that below.

Sun, 21 Jun 2026 - 2215 - Kids Don’t Need Perfect Parents, Just Present Ones with Lisa Taylor
Is the way we were brought up the best way to raise our kids today?
In this deeply honest and insightful conversation, Osher speaks with family therapist, educator and author Lisa Taylor to explore the emotional patterns that shape family life — often without us even realising it. From childhood “heartprints” and generational conditioning to emotional regulation, repair and connection, Lisa explains why parenting is less about control and more about awareness.
Lisa shares her own journey from overwhelmed young mum to one of Australia’s most trusted parenting voices, opening up about grief, perfectionism, anxiety and the moment she realised there had to be a better way to parent. She also unpacks why children’s behaviour is all about communication, how unresolved childhood experiences influence our reactions as parents, and why "rupture and repair" is an essential part of healthy relationships.
This conversation also explores boundaries, teenage behaviour, emotional resilience, social media, discipline, and the pressure modern parents feel to “get it right, all the time". Whether you’re raising toddlers, teenagers, or reflecting on your own upbringing, this conversation offers practical tools, compassion and reassurance for anyone trying to build deeper connection within their family.

Tue, 16 Jun 2026 - 2214 - The Lessons From Death That Will Change How You Live
What happens when you spend more than 20 years standing at the crossroads between life and death? You learn A LOT.
In this powerful conversation, intensive care doctor and author Dr Matt Morgan shares the lessons he's taken from caring for hundreds of patients who have experienced cardiac arrest, near-death experiences, and life-changing moments in the ICU.
Matt reveals the moments that have reshaped the way he thinks about regret, forgiveness, relationships, and what truly matters when everything else is stripped away.
He also shares practical advice having witnessed people lose everything they thought defined them.
In those moments, he's seen what remains: connection, love, memories, and meaning. Because the question is not just what happens at the end of life — it’s what we choose to do with the time we have before then.

Mon, 15 Jun 2026 - 2213 - The Mindset Behind Daniel MacPherson's Transformation for latest film 'Beast'
My guest this week is someone many Australians have grown up watching — perhaps on Neighbours, maybe on Dancing With The Stars, perhaps even Strike Back. Now Daniel MacPherson has taken on one of the most physically and emotionally demanding roles of his career for the film Beast.
In this conversation, we go far beyond the world of film and television, delving into identity, fatherhood, mental health, discipline, addiction, physical resilience, reinventing yourself in your 40s, and what it's really like to work with Russell Crowe.
Daniel opens up about the making of his new film Beast, the brutal physical preparation behind it, and why the story connected so deeply with him on a personal level. We also get into the realities of chasing purpose after success, the pressure many men carry silently, and the role movement, breathwork, training, and community can play in staying mentally strong.
It's an honest, thoughtful, and surprisingly vulnerable chat with a guy who’s spent years pushing himself physically and creatively, and who’s now doing some of the best work of his life.

Tue, 09 Jun 2026 - 2212 - What Would Dannii Minogue Do?: Two Showbiz Lessons For Everyday Life from the Aussie Icon
Watching the Kylie Minogue documentary on Netflix with Audrey the other night, I was so happy to see my friend (and Kylie's sister) Dannii Minogue appear.
There was a time when I thought I knew all about Dannii - that was until I worked with her for the very first time in 2009. I had been called in at the very last minute to work with Dannii to cover a prominent breakfast radio shift, and was immediately blown away at how this incredible woman handled herself just with absolute grace, absolute commitment and focus at all times.
I then had the pleasure of working with Dannii again on The Masked Singer Australia. I have learned so much from her. I continue to learn so much from her about what it is to show up, what it is to be in business, how one can stay afloat in times of uncertainty, how one can stay focused in times of pressure.
In this episode, I'm taking a look back at two big showbiz lessons Dannii shared with me on the show a few years ago. While they're from her entertainment world, they are lessons we can all apply to our everyday lives. And if you get the chance, check out the Kylie doco on Netflix!

Sun, 07 Jun 2026 - 2211 - 'Comfort Is Holding You Back': Secrets to Growth and Confidence with Ant Williams
What if the key to a better life isn't avoiding discomfort - but actively seeking it?
In this powerful conversation, Osher sits down with performance psychologist, leadership coach, and world-record holding freediver Ant Williams to explore why some of life's greatest breakthroughs happen when we step intofear rather than run from it.
Drawing on decades of experience helping athletes, leaders, and high performers build their resilience, Ant shares remarkable stories from the extremes of human endurance, including deep ocean freediving, swimming beneath ice, encounters with sharks, and moments where staying calm was the difference between life and death.
But this episode goes far beyond adventure - Ant also reveals practical strategies for managing anxiety, building resilience, handling difficult conversations, improving performance and developing the self-awareness needed to grow through life's challenges.
He also opens up about leaving a fundamentalist church, overcoming fear-based thinking, and how deliberately embracing discomfort transformed his life.
Whether you're navigating career pressure, parenting challenges, relationship struggles, or simply looking to become more mentally resilient, this conversation offers actionable tools to help you stay calm, focused, and confident when it matters most.

Tue, 02 Jun 2026 - 2210 - What Gangsters and Hackers Can Teach As About Thriving in the Modern Economy
In a world where the old 'social contract' has been tossed out the window, where AI is taking over human resources and the 'traditional' path feels more like a dead end - where do you look for the new rules of survival?
Do you look to the old school executive leaders or do you look to the fringes, the creatives, the disruptors? Perhaps there are still ideas and business models which come from well outside the norm that can offer unconventional ways we could move ahead and possibly even achieve unreasonable results?
In this episode, we’re looking back at my chat with economic historian and author of The Misfit Economy Alexa Clay, who spent years inside informal, grey, and black markets, talking to gang leaders, hackers, and pirates, and discovered that they weren't 'just criminals' - they were the most agile entrepreneurs on the planet.
And while the story we’re often told about great business leaders is almost always 'the lone genius with a venture capital war chest', Alexa noticed that the most radical innovation happens when there is zero safety net. So could this 'grey market' be the blueprint for an increasingly uncertain economy?

Sun, 31 May 2026 - 2209 - How Radio Star Robin Bailey Kept Going Through Unimaginable Grief - Twice
It was an absolute pleasure to sit down with Brisbane radio veteran Robin Bailey for a deeply honest and emotional conversation about the extraordinary highs and devastating lows of her life behind the microphone.
I first met Robin in the mid-90s at B105 - I was the overnight guy, she was a new breakfast producer. From there, she quickly cemented herself as a staple and a survivor of the brutal commercial radio industry. In Brisbane alone, she's worked across three commercial station, been sacked at least three times (and most recently re-hired after a month thanks to listener backlash).
But away from the microphone, Robin has endured a number of tragedies that many of us would struggle to come back from - and she's done it time and time again - all under the spotlight of her radio audience.
In this conversation, Robin shares the moments that shaped her career - and her life. She opens up about losing her former husband Tony to suicide, then another husband Sean to cancer, raising three sons through grief, navigating public scrutiny, and why authenticity became her greatest strength.
We also unpack memories of our radio careers, and how Robin would like to see the industry evolve, particularly for female presenters, producers and journalists.
This is a raw, powerful and ultimately hopeful conversation about survival, healing and choosing love in the face of pain.
And a note, this episode deals with suicide, mental health and grief. If you or someone you know need support, please see the resources below.

In this episode, you'll hear the true story of how I met — and nearly didn’t kiss — the woman who would become my wife. This was originally recorded live at Story Club at Sydney’s Factory Theatre, as part of a Valentine’s-themed show.
From terrifying encounters with a woman whose boyfriend worked for Kanye West, to a painfully unromantic first kiss involving vegan Tim Tams, it's a true story of love, vulnerability, and learning how to build a healthy relationship after years of chaos and self-destruction, plus some insights into storytelling, communication, and why true stories have the power to connect us in ways nothing else can.

In this episode, trial lawyer and communication expert Jefferson Fisher explores the real art of communication — from difficult conversations and emotional regulation to ego, relationships and the hidden psychology behind how we speak to one another.
Drawing on his experience as a courtroom advocate and one of the internet’s most trusted voices on communication, Jefferson shares practical insights into staying calm under pressure, handling conflict without escalation, and learning how to truly listen. Together, Jefferson and I unpack why so many of us struggle with communication, how our upbringing shapes the way we argue and connect, and what happens when we replace human connection with screens and text messages.
We also cover the prevalence of public speaking anxiety, emotional intelligence, humility and the importance of curiosity over ego. Along the way, Jefferson offers simple but powerful tools for navigating heated moments, understanding what people really mean beneath their words, and becoming more intentional in the way we show up for others.
This insightful conversation is packed with useful advice you can use right now if you want stronger relationships, better conversations and a deeper understanding of what it means to truly connect as human beings.

Tue, 19 May 2026 - 2206 - Movember: The Simple Idea That Changed The Face Of Men's Health
In this episode of Better Than Yesterday, we revisit a powerful conversation with Adam Garone, co-founder of Movember, to explore how one of the world’s most successful grassroots movements began not with a strategy or manifesto, but with a simple dare among friends.
What started in a Melbourne backyard as a playful challenge to bring back the moustache quickly evolved into a global campaign for men’s health. Over time, Movember has grown into a worldwide movement spanning more than 20 countries, engaging millions of participants and raising over a billion dollars for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health initiatives.
This episode unpacks the surprising mechanics behind Movember’s success: why playfulness can be more powerful than seriousness in capturing attention, how trust and community participation fuel organic growth, and why the organisation’s biggest innovation may be treating participants not as audiences, but as co-creators of the movement.
We also hear how Movember has helped reshape medical research itself—connecting previously isolated researchers across the globe and fostering collaboration that accelerates breakthroughs in men’s health.
It's a conversation about rethinking how change happens, and challenging the idea that movements need perfection or authority to begin. Instead, curiosity, connection, and a bit of irreverence can actually drive real-world impact.

Mon, 11 May 2026 - 2203 - The Reality of Living In The Outback: Brendan Cullen's Journey from Pain to Purpose
Australia’s outback is world-renowned for it’s beauty, it’s uniqueness and it’s people. But what often isn’t spoken about is the sheer isolation living in these remote communities.
My guest on this episode is a man who has lived at the extremes — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Brendan Cullen has lived his life on the land. He’s navigated childhood trauma, isolation, depression and alcohol dependency - and come out the other side a better person and a better father.
In this conversation, Brendan opens up about the moment things caught up with him - when the mental load eventually became too heavy to carry alone and he could no longer wear the mask. He talks about the reality of living with depression, the brutal isolation of the rural Australia, and what it took to finally ask for help. He also talks about finally finding purpose, and how he managed to train to swim the English Channel in the middle of the outback.
It’s a candid yet important look at mental health, particularly in rural communities where silence and self-reliance are often the status quo. Brendan stands as a beacon of resilience forged the hard way, and proof asking for help can make a real difference.

Sun, 03 May 2026 - 2201 - Anger Is Not Failure: Rethinking Motherhood with Lauren Novak
One of the hardest parts of parenting is one not many people talk about.
In this episode, we dive into the reality of “mum rage” — the intense, often shame-filled anger that can surface in the daily grind of parenting. Lauren Novak is a journalist, author and mum herself. Her new book 'Melt Down' explores the raw and often unspoken angry emotions that many mothers go through, yet few feel safe admitting.
This honest and deeply personal conversation explores the gap between what we’re told parenting should feel like, and the pressure-filled reality it often is. We unpack the invisible mental load, the impact of sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and the relentless demands that can push even the most loving parents to breaking point. You’ll also hear about the anger–guilt cycle, why it happens, and how it can quietly erode wellbeing if left unspoken.
If you’ve ever felt overstretched, overstimulated, or just not good enough as a parent, this conversation will feel both validating and illuminating. Because the truth is: you’re not the only one — and talking about it might be the first step to changing it.

Tue, 28 Apr 2026 - 2200 - How The Netherlands Turned an Oil Crisis Into a National Opportunity
What if a crisis isn’t just something to endure, but a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink everything?
In this episode, I'm unpacking the idea of “crisitunity” (yes, inspired by Homer Simpson!) and exploring how a moment of disruption can become a catalyst for lasting change.
I'm taking you all the way back to 1973, when another global oil crisis brought The Netherlands to a standstill. Instead of waiting and hoping for normalcy to return, they made a bold decision: redesign their cities, prioritise people over cars (even banning them one day a week), and build what would become the world’s best cycling infrastructure.
Fast forward to 2026, and Australia is facing its own version of that moment—rising fuel prices, fragile supply chains, and a heavy dependence on imported energy. So the question is: will we just ride it out… or capitalise on this opportunity?
This episode explores what’s at stake, what’s possible, and why the choices we make right now could shape the future of how we move, live, and build a more resilient country.

In this episode, I'm delving into human behaviour, especially in the age of online outrage, and whether we are truly driven by our values, or by the emotional payoff of being 'right'? Plus a look at why supposedly 'progressive' movements sometimes push away their own supporters.

Sun, 19 Apr 2026 - 2197 - Natalie Bassingthwaighte Lifts the Curtain on Her Career & Personal Struggles
Natalie Bassingthwaighte is an icon of the Australian entertainment industry. Best known for fronting dance act Rogue Traders (plus her stellar solo career) and playing troublemaker Izzy Hoyland on Neighbours, Natalie also has an extensive musical theatre background. But more recently, it's her personal life that has taken centre stage.
In this deeply honest and wide-ranging conversation, Natalie joins me to unpack the realities behind living life in the spotlight — from rejection and self-doubt to relationships and identity.
Natalie shares what it really takes to survive and stay grounded in an industry where people are easily overlooked and dismissed, and how her relationship with herself has evolved through career highs, personal loss, and major life transitions. From being told she’d never make it at 16, to navigating fame, online criticism, and burnout, this episode is a powerful look at resilience in action.
Nat and I dive into the mental health tools that actually help — including therapy, meditation, and learning how to interrupt negative thought spirals — and why success alone doesn’t fix how you feel inside. We also explore the complexity of relationships including co-parenting and separation, and the courage it takes to live truthfully, even when it’s messy, misunderstood and open to criticism.
If anyone embodies resilience and determination in Australia's entertainment industry, it's Natalie Bassingthwaighte. I know you'll enjoy this chat, and her book is a cracker.

Tue, 14 Apr 2026 - 2196 - The Truth Crisis: Separating Facts from Beliefs, Misinformation and Propaganda with Dom Thurbon
There's no denying that we’re living in a time where misinformation spreads faster than ever, and shared reality is breaking down.
But what if the biggest threat to society isn’t the misinformation, but our relationship with truthitself?
In this powerful conversation, Osher Günsberg sits down with behavioural expert and author Dom Thurbon to unpack why humans lie, how beliefs are formed, and why facts alone rarely change our minds.
From climate anxiety and AI-generated misinformation to vaccine debates and identity-driven beliefs, this episode dives deep into the psychology of truth in a world where reality feels increasingly unstable.
Learn why many people don’t respond to logic, how 'ease' often drives behaviour more than truth, and what it actually takes to create honest conversations in your relationships, your work, and society at large.

Tue, 07 Apr 2026 - 2195 - Global energy crisis: Inside Australia's renewable energy transition
Professor Alistair Sproul has been building solar technology since the 1980s. As head of the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering at UNSW, he's watched Australia lead the world in solar adoption often without realising it.
As the nation, and indeed the rest of the world, grapples with a mounting energy crisis and growing oil prices, I thought it would be a great time to revisit my chat with Alistair and his insights into Australia's transition towards renewable energy.
That transition isn't coming. It's already here. And it's happening faster than anyone in Canberra is telling you.

Sun, 05 Apr 2026 - 2194 - How Bridie Connell Built a Fake Boy Band That Feels Real
What do boy bands, modern dating and unhealthy masculinity have in common?
According to today's guest - comedian, writer and performer Bridie Connell - more than you think.
In this hilarious conversation, Bridie joins me to talk about her wildly original musical F*ccbois: Live In Concert — a sharp, affectionate and very funny satire about a fictional boy band, performed entirely by a female and non-binary cast in drag.
Bridie shares how years of observing modern dating culture, “love bombing”, gaslighting and the strange choreography of bad male behaviour inspired the show. And how what began as a desire to write about “f*ck boys” eventually became a full-scale musical and a love letter to the boy bands of the ’90s and 2000s, like Backstreet Boys, *NSync and Westlife.
The show is hilarious - if you get the chance to see it, you won't regret it!

Tue, 31 Mar 2026 - 2193 - Energy Security Through Transport Electrification with Saul Griffith
If you've wondered whether electrification is actually feasible, affordable, or secure — this episode answers those questions with data, not hope.
Saul Griffith — MIT engineer, inventor, and author of Electrify: An Optimist's Playbook for Our Clean Energy Future — reveals why Australia is uniquely positioned to lead the world's energy transition, starting with transport. In this Best Of episode focused on energy security and transportation, Saul explains why electric vehicle adoption will happen faster than anyone expects once price parity hits, how EVs actually make the grid more resilient by serving as distributed battery storage, and why hydrogen vehicles are a fossil fuel industry distraction that can't compete with batteries on physics or economics.
You'll hear:
The 35-second plan that could decarbonize Australia by 2030 Why rooftop solar's explosive growth previews what's coming for EVs How the Ford F-150 going electric changes cultural perceptions overnight Why Australian households with EVs could go off-grid for 10+ days The engineering reality that kills hydrogen's viability for transportLINKS

Sun, 29 Mar 2026 - 2192 - Motivated Reasoning: Why We Believe What We Want with Peter Singer
What does it actually mean to live a good life in a world that feels increasingly complex, divided, and emotionally charged?
In this conversation, I speak with world-renowned moral philosopher and professor of bioethics Peter Singer to unpack some of the hardest questions of our time—from the ethics of global conflict and public discourse, to why we ignore suffering we could prevent, and what we really owe one another.
We explore the tension between outrage and empathy, the psychology behind why we cling to certain beliefs even when faced with evidence, and how identity can quietly shape (and limit) our thinking. Peter also shares the personal story of how he radically changed his own views, and why being willing to revise your beliefs isn’t just intellectual humility… it’s a moral responsibility.
And Peter explains how to make donations to charity have the greatest impact in 2026.

Tue, 24 Mar 2026 - 2191 - What does it take to stay on your path when everything's falling apart?
Rich Roll gets brutally honest about the seven-year financial nightmare that nearly broke him — cars repossessed, dumping rubbish behind grocery stores, racing against house foreclosure while being featured on the cover of Outside Magazine.
This isn't the polished hero's journey.
This is the real thing.
Part of a longer conversation form ep 484, today Rich and Osher discuss:
The dissonance between public success and private collapse
How his wife Julie's "Jedi mindset" became their survival strategy
Why he treated the repo man with dignity instead of resentment
The neuroscience of movement as a pattern interrupt for stuck thinking
The single question that kept him from going back to his old job.

Sun, 22 Mar 2026 - 2190 - Daniel Sloss Gets Brutally Honest About Fatherhood and Becoming Bitter
In this episode, I'm joined again by the brilliantly fearless comedian Daniel Sloss.
We take a deep dive into a wide range of topics, including the realities of fatherhood, the dark side of anonymity on the internet, and the crucial distinction between kindness and weakness. Daniel shares his experiences navigating the emotional rollercoaster of going from performing for thousands of adoring fans to the daily grind of parenting young children.
We also explore how the line of what's acceptable in comedy is constantly shifting, the challenges of being a "sexist feminist", and the importance of self-compassion. Daniel reveals how embracing his flaws through parody on stage has helped him become more humble in real life.
And based on his new comedy show, we also discuss the bitterness that can creep in when comparing oneself to others and how focusing on what truly matters, like the love of family, can bring genuine happiness.

Tue, 17 Mar 2026 - 2189 - Connection and Community Through Sport with Broden Kelly
Broden Kelly is best known as one of the members of comedy team Aunty Donna. But he's also a mad footy fan who started a podcast called The Footy with Broden Kelly.
With the footy season kicking off in Australia, I thought it would be a good time to look back on my chat with Broden from a few years ago, where we discussed the power of sport, particularly AFL, to unite people in cheering for a common goal. In a world that often lacks connection, sport can provide both social connection and physical movement.
If you're not currently barracking for a team, I'm going to try my best to convince you it's a good idea to start. And if you are already following a team, I'll give you some reasons why it's a good thing (even if other people are telling you otherwise).

Sun, 15 Mar 2026 - 2188 - Why Winning Doesn’t Always Make You Happy with Ben Crowe
Today’s guest works with some of the most elite performers in the world — AFL premiership captains, Grand Slam champions, world title surfers and Olympic athletes.
But this conversation isn’t about winning. It’s about what happens before the win. And what happens when there isn’t one.
In this powerful conversation, author and mindset coach Ben Crowe explains the psychology of elite performance, pressure, identity, and what it really means to succeed.
While Ben has worked with elite athletes and world champions, helping them navigate the mental side of performance, this conversation goes far beyond sport. It’s about self-worth, perfectionism, vulnerability, and why so many high performers struggle when their identity becomes tied to outcomes.
We explore the hidden pressure behind success, why chasing perfection can lead to shame, and how separating who you are from what you do can transform both performance and wellbeing.
Ben shares practical insights from working with the likes of Ash Barty, revealing the mindset shifts that allow people to perform at their best while still living a meaningful life.
If you’ve ever felt the weight of expectations, whether in your career, relationships, or personal ambitions, this conversation will help you reframe the way you think about success.

The Definition of Trauma: Why trauma is defined not by what happened, but by how it made you feel, and the profound, genetic stakes of leaving it unprocessed. The Suffering Witness: How to recognize that your empathy is a strength, not a wound, and why seeking help is vital even if the trauma didn't happen to you directly. This is a conversation about the extraordinary human capacity to build meaning, move through uncertainty, and choose a full, thriving life.

Sun, 01 Mar 2026 - 2184 - How Social Media And Smartphones Are Rewiring Our Brains with Dr. Mark Williams
If you’ve stopped and looked up in the middle of a shopping centre or on your train or bus commute, there’s probably one think you’d notice – almost everybody you encounter having their faced buried in their phones. The growth of social media and smartphones means we are constantly looking to be entertained.
Today’s guest says – that’s a problem. And he would know, he’s an acclaimed cognitive neuroscientist who has studied behaviour and brain imaging research for more than 25 years.
In his new book, Dr Mark Williams reveals how screen exposure is rewiring our brains, especially those of our children. From dopamine loops and social media addiction… to loneliness, parenting, and the subtle ways technology reshapes memory and relationships - this is a conversation every parent needs to hear. While there’s plenty that is scary in our discussion, Mark also has some simple and effective solutions to help build real-life resilience and connections in a digital world.

Sun, 22 Feb 2026 - 2182 - When Australian Idol's Wes Carr Picked Up A Shovel It Changed What Happens When He Picks Up A Guitar
In 2008, Wes Carr had the things most artists dream of - national fame, chart-topping success, and millions of eyes watching him perform on the iconic Sydney Opera House steps. What followed was a whirlwind of promotion, performing and recording sessions that strayed from Wes' authenticity as an artist.
In this raw and reflective conversation, Wes opens up about success, identity, burnout, and the quiet cost of ambition. He talks about nuturing his passion for music growing up, the spiritual reckoning that followed his Australian Idol win, and why reinvention sometimes feels like survival. From changing his name and starting again in America, to returning home to Australia with his family and a new understanding of who he is without the noise, Wes is candid about where he's been and where he's going.

Sun, 15 Feb 2026 - 2180 - Trying To Belong In A World That Constantly Judges You (with Nikki Justice)
When we tell ourselves stories about who belongs and who doesn’t: what’s that person doing in my street? How’d a person dressed like that get in here? Who let that guy who works for that politician who says those things into this birthday party? When we really think about it - how often are we wrong? Today’s guest, deals with those judgements all day, and how she handles them is well worth listening to.
Let’s test your who belongs and who doesn’t story. My guest today is a stand up comedian, a former stripper, an OnlyFans creator - and a mother. How did you go? Did you check out? Still with me?
Nikki Justice has a story you just have to hear to believe. It’s just your standard story of growing up around addiction, joining the circus when she was still a kid, then making a career as an adult entertainer and a standup comedian. Her life has been interesting to say the least.
In this conversation, we talk about what it really means to be judged - and how much of that judgment actually lives inside us. We also explore motherhood, shame, sex work, comedy, trauma, and the strange ways we all try to fit in, or belong. Nikki is candid and authentic in telling her story, and her perspective may just change your mind about how you look at and judge others.

Sun, 08 Feb 2026 - 2178 - Why Sometimes Being Miserable Is Actually A Good Thing (with Eamon Evans)
What if I told you that the secret to happiness was to pay more attention to the times when life absolutely sucks? How can that make sense?
Everything I scroll past berates me with a message about finding happiness, treating myself, pushing me to constantly be seek out the good at all costs. While it’s absolutely important to discover and nurture those things that make life pleasurable and even tolerable, my guest today argues that we also need to also sit with and even embrace misery to truly appreciate what makes life great.
Eamon Evans is a prolific author, writing 15 books on everything from sport to crime, urban legends and great Aussie scandals. His latest book, The Importance of Being Miserable: A Short History of Human Happiness, and Why Sometimes It's Good to Feel Bad, challenges the notion that life should always be good, happy and sparkly; and suggests that negative emotions have been historically important, and still are.
Today, Eamon unpacks the fantasy we’ve been sold over the years - that happiness is something you can achieve, lock in, and never lose, and argues that, ironically, chasing it might actually be what’s making us miserable. Fear not, Eamon is hilarious and delivers his message in a coating of laughter and delicious irony - so he’s able to get the idea across incredibly well.
He's even written a book about it, "The Importance of Being Miserable".Now that I think about it, the title of the book might just be the closest thing that's ever got me to understanding why Morrissey exists.

Tue, 27 Jan 2026 - 2175 - Identity, Storytelling and Resilience with Stan Grant
Today is January 26th.
If you’ve listened to the show for a while you’ll probably have an idea about where I view the significance of this day. If there’s one thing I wish for 2026, it’s that two things can be true at the same time. It is vitally important to celebrate a national identity, the story which binds us together as a community.
The current day we’re celebrating this concept causes a great deal of pain to a significant number of people in our country. I’m not putting forward at all that we sholdn’t celebrate who we are as a nation, far from it - i think it’s incredibly important to be proud of who we are, what we’ve become and also to recognise where we’ve come from. We can do that in a way which unites us.
The current way we’re going about it doesn’t really do the job. What kind of community do we want? A community divided along ideological lines so stark that we may as well be separate communities? Or a community united by values which we consider at the core of our national identity, and those ideological lines branch from there, as a way to put those values into action in our daily lives? For context, today we’re revisiting one of my favourite people in the world - the incredible Stan Grant.

Steven Pinker is a cognitive scientist, bestselling author, and one of the most influential thinkers of our time. His latest book unpacks the concept of 'common knowledge', and how it impacts our social, political, and economic lives.
Steven argues that this invisible layer of shared understanding holds societies together. Sun, 03 Apr 2016 - 2159 - 126: Rachael Johns
Rachael Johns is one of Australia's most successful romance novelists. She's penned over fifteen books, and has amassed a legion of followers who look forward to what will next unfold in the impossibly romantic Australian outback where men are men who wander in from out of town to get work and then turn up one morning on the farm to lift heavy things with rugged muscled bodies in the sunset. You get the idea. The most interesting thing about this is Rachael's path to success. Yes she's published more than 15 books, but it took her 15 years to get noticed. Also it's interesting how the skills she learned as a kid helped her in her now career - and her creative flow is also something that I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing about.
