Slow Jamz Radio is back on the internet, this time we're doing live visual sets from Slow Jamz Gallery. Episode #006 kicks off with a melting pot of Da Bassment Cru, Swing Mob, & the SuperFriends. Da Bassment Cru (aka Swing Mob) was a collective of artists founded by Jodeci member, DeVante Swing in 1995. These artists included: Timbaland, Missy Elliott (Sista), Magoo, Ginuwine, Playa, Tweet (Sugah), and many more. The group made a compilation tape that they marketed to record labels, then eventually their contributions have made it's debut from Jodeci's The Show, The After-Party, The Hotel. Da Bassment Cru/Swing Mob eventually disbanded from DeVante's mood swings and the artists continued to collaborate under the collective, The Superfriends in 1997. In my opinion, this is really when each individual artist began to shine and rise to growth. Timbaland & Magoo dropped their album, they adopted Aaliyah to their roster (in which Tim, Missy, & Static backed her project), Missy dropped Supa Dupa Fly, Playa dropped Cheers 2 U, and Ginuwine wanted to be your pony. Peace y'all! It's been quite some time since you last heard from me. I've been working a lot on rugs recently through very late nights and while working, I fell into a rabbit hole of Kanye West's Sunday Service Choir material -- I've probably watched all the performances they've done in their 10 months of touring. The great thing about each concert they do on tour is that each show is different and they add new songs to their setlist consistently. The Sunday Service Choir is led by Jason White, a veteran in the gospel music space and a lot of these songs are rewritten in a Christian/gospel lens by Nikki Grier, transforming songs by Roddy Ricch, Destiny's Child, SWV, and a lot more. Now I made it easier for you guys by digging through hours of their concerts and curating my favorite tracks together, so here's my take on gospel covers for lovers by the Sunday Service Choir. This episode was supposed to be released in conjunction with my Star Trak collection, but my external hard drive has passed away and I am currently rebuilding my music library. The idea of this mix came about because there’s too many Neptunes/Star Trak mixes out there and everyone plays all the bangers, so there’s not enough love for the hidden gems. So Episode #003 is called Lost In Space and I play my favorite deep cuts and unreleased songs from The Neptunes. These songs are from their primetime in 2003 with a sprinkle of new songs; I really loved the palette of sounds they used during this era, which became their signature sound.
