So Fly Fishing Podcast

- 264 - EP 223 Phil Rowley and Stillwater Fishing Techniques
Stillwater legend Phil Rowley joins us to talk about what decades of chasing trout on lakes have taught him, and what he’s still trying to figure out. We get into how Phil reads unfamiliar water, the clues he trusts most, why anglers sometimes overcomplicate things, and how to know when to change your fly, depth, retrieve, or location. Then, Mitch puts Phil’s knowledge to the test with a very specific mission: help him catch a rainbow trout on an unfamiliar Ontario lake. From trout behaviour and entomology to float tubes, fly selection and the mysteries that keep us coming back, this one is a deep dive into becoming a better stillwater angler. Tue, 15 Sep 2026 - 263 - EP 222 Nathan Wilbur of the Atlantic Salmon Federation
On this episode of So Fly, we’re joined by Nathan Wilbur, President of the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), to talk about one of the most iconic fish on the planet: the wild Atlantic salmon. Based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Nathan has spent more than a decade with the ASF working to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon across eastern Canada. His work has ranged from developing conservation programs and building coalitions and Indigenous partnerships to advocating for stronger salmon management at the government level. In July 2025, Nathan stepped into the role of President of the organization. Nathan is also a Professional Engineer with a background in rivers and fluvial geomorphology. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Forest Engineering from the University of New Brunswick before completing a Master’s in Civil Engineering, where his research focused on cold-water habitat for Atlantic salmon. But for Nathan, salmon and rivers are more than a career. He’s also a lifelong angler with a deep connection to fish, flowing water and the natural world. We chat with Nathan about the current state of wild Atlantic salmon, the biggest challenges facing populations today, habitat and river restoration, conservation and management, and the work being done to give these incredible fish a better future. Plus, we learn a little about Nathan the angler. Enjoy! Explore the ASF: https://www.asf.ca/ HOW TO HELP SO FLY: Please go leave us a review on APPLE PODCASTS. Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 262 - EP 221 Dr. Steven J Cooke of Carleton University, Fish Ecology and Conservation
We sit with Dr. Steven J. Cooke, a professor at Carleton University in Ottawa and one of Canada’s leading researchers in fish ecology, conservation, and recreational fisheries. We chat about what happens to fish when we catch them, and get into just how effective the practices of catch and release actually are. Dr. Cooke has spent his career studying some of the biggest questions facing fish and freshwater ecosystems, from fish migration and habitat restoration to stress physiology and more. Dr. Cooke has published more than 1200 research papers, is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and was inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame - just to name a few of his accomplishments and recognitions, but there are many more. To put it succinctly, he has spent decades working to turn conservation science into something that can actually make a difference on the water. Sat, 15 Aug 2026 - 261 - EP 220 Joe Conrad, Reel Designer for Sage
Joe Conrad is a mechanical engineer whose passion for fly fishing has led him to a career designing some of the gear anglers rely on every day. Based out of Sage's research and development facility on Bainbridge Island, Washington, Joe specializes in fly reel design and plays a key role in bringing new products from concept to reality. Most recently, he worked on Sage's new Shift series, helping develop equipment built to perform across a wide range of fishing situations. When he's not in the shop engineering fly reels, Joe spends his time chasing fish in both fresh and saltwater, or exploring technical rock climbs, and tackling the occasional mountaineering objective. His curiosity and creativity extend well beyond the outdoors. Joe is also a musician, and a weaver - he brings the same thoughtful approach to his creative pursuits that he does to engineering. Whether he's designing gear, fishing, scaling rock faces, or creating something with his hands, Joe is driven by a love of craftsmanship, problem-solving, and adventure. Today, we're excited to dive into the intersection of engineering, creativity, and fly fishing. HOW TO HELP SO FLY: Please go leave us a review on APPLE PODCASTS. Wed, 01 Apr 2026 - 252 - EP 211 Gaspé Fishing Trip with Junior and David
We head east to the legendary Gaspé coast for an unforgettable adventure chasing striped bass and Atlantic salmon. It was our first time exploring the region, except for Aldo who had been before - and the experience lived up to every bit of the hype. We were joined by our good friends Junior and David, and together we fished the rivers and coastal waters of the Gaspé while taking in the rugged beauty that makes this place so special. Along the way, we also filmed a short documentary called This Is Ours, which tells the story of the Gaspé Coastal lodge and the people connected to it. The film is currently touring in the PALM Festival and the Scale of Change festival, and this trip became a big part of that story. In this episode, we talk about first impressions of the Gaspé region, what it was like targeting striped bass and salmon in such an iconic fishery, the moments that stood out from the trip, and how the experience shaped the film. From road-trip laughs to powerful days on the water, this conversation captures the spirit of a place that quickly left its mark on all of us. If you love travel, fishing, and the stories that come from chasing fish in new places, DON'T MISS THIS EP! Sun, 15 Mar 2026 - 251 - EP 210 Norman Maktima, Competitive Angling, Desert Trout, and More
We sit with Indigenous Pueblo angler Norman Maktima. Norman grew up in Pecos, just outside Santa Fe, fishing the Pecos River with his father, a place that shaped both his angling and his identity as a descendant of the Pueblos of San Felipe, Laguna, and Hopi. He’s been immersed in fly fishing since childhood, splitting time between the water and the vise, and by 1997 he was already guiding for High Desert Angler and earning a spot on Team USA’s Youth Fly Fishing Team. Since then, he’s built an elite competitive career with international medals, a U.S. National Championship title, and appearances at world championships across Europe and North America. Today, Norman designs signature flies for Umpqua, runs NMaktima Fly Fishing featuring Pueblo-inspired designs - he guides on the San Juan River, and coaches the U.S. Women’s Fly Fishing Team, which recently took Team Gold along with individual Gold and Silver at the World Championships. Beyond competition, he’s deeply committed to teaching and sharing knowledge, especially within Indigenous communities, using fly fishing as a way to connect culture, water, and opportunity. We sit with Jeffery Feczko, owner and guide of To The Gills in Baja California Sur, Mexico. From fly tying at a young age to guiding fisheries across the globe, Jeffery has built a life shaped by travel, salt, and fish. His twenties took him from Alaska, earning his 100-ton USCG Master Captain’s license, to destinations like the Seychelles, where guiding iconic atolls eventually led to burnout and a realization that living in waders year-round wasn’t the life he wanted. Drawn back to warm water and shore-based fishing, he went to Baja California Sur, where he now guides year-round in one of the most diverse and demanding fisheries on the planet. In this episode, we talk about why Baja stands above everywhere else he’s fished - the people, culture, food, and the mighty, mighty roosterfish. Tue, 15 Apr 2025 - 223 - EP 188 Scale of Change with HOOKÉ Live from the Yeti Booth
We sat with Fred and Seb from HOOKÉ to chat all about a new project and documentary, Scale of Change. This episode was recorded LIVE from the Toronto Sports Show, right in the YETI booth. We got to hear from Seb, a chef, hunter and angler about his outdoor life, and speak to Fred Campbell about Scale of Change... In the upcoming documentary Scale of Change, we explore how individual actions, no matter how small, can lead to monumental transformations for the Atlantic salmon. One person restores a river system. Another removes a dam. Each action is a drop in the bucket, but together, those drops fill it—creating a ripple effect of change that, while not always immediately visible, holds the power to shape the future. If we believe in that shared vision, and have hope, we can make a meaningful difference. Find SEB on Instagram @foodie_inthewild HOW TO HELP SO FLY: Please go leave us a review on APPLE PODCASTS.
