"...there are those (difficult) moments but at the end of the day, it's a joy we get to be a parent. We get to have this kids with us for however many years and then they're going to be their own person and grow up. This time will never come round again."

Wed, 21 Sep 2022 - 25min - 79 - How to best be a Parent-Coach for my Child during Exam Season
It is inevitable: Anxiety and stress heightens as our children go through the education system and face national examinations! How can we become the parent-coach our children need as they go through these academic challenges?
Join our host, Chong Ee Jay, who chats with Pauline Foo, a mother of three and an educator who has been in the field for more than 20 years.
Speaking about understanding our unique child, Pauline shares about taking individualistic approaches in parenting and how motivating our children requires us to motivate ourselves too. More importantly, academic success does not determine our child's worth, nor our success as a parent. Being a parent-coach means that our child's journey to maturity also means a journey of growth as parents!

Tue, 07 Jul 2020 - 17min - 73 - Understanding the Heart (and Mind) of Everyday Dads
There is a rising trend of men being more involved in their families—as loving husbands and involved fathers. Gone are the days when married men just bring home the dough and leave their wives to deal with all things to do with the family.
As encouraging as this has been, there seems to be more discussion on the needs and struggles of mums, than of dads. In this episode, we want to understand more about the experiences of dads in this area. What are their struggles and dilemmas? Do they deal with guilt and insecurities, too?
Aaron Ng of Focus on the Family Singapore speaks to two fathers, James and Jason, to hear how they manage their emotions, their relationship with their spouse and find support in their fatherhood journey.
James Ong is married for 7 years and has 3 children (aged 5, 2.5 years old and 2 months old). Both James and his wife are in the business of developing human capital using tools like Gallup’s Clifton StrengthsFinder. James is also a community builder and serves as the vice-chair of the Residents’ Network in his estate.
Jason Leong is married for 12 years to Ruth. They have 2 children, aged 8 and 6. The couple is passionate about helping people and organisations realise their potential. Jason is also a PE teacher in a secondary school.

With more time spent with their children, Mums seem to know best and Dads can often be found on the sidelines in parenting, regardless whether it’s their choice or not.
However, is Mum's way really the best way? How do Dads really feel about this?
Join Aaron Ng of Focus on the Family Singapore, in this podcast interview with husband-and-wife, Marcus and Joy Cheng, as they recount their journey in parenting their two teenage sons.
Marcus is an educator with the Ministry of Education, and is currently a Year Head at a local primary school. He was formerly an Air Traffic Controller with the Republic of Singapore Air Force. Is it true that there are some things you will only “get” after you become a Mum yourself?
Join Joanna Koh-Hoe, CEO of Focus on the Family Singapore, as she chats with Tabitha and Jace Tan, a young mother and grandmother, on how their roles and attitudes towards each other have evolved ever since Tabitha became a mum.
Tabitha is a first time mum to Baby Olivia. She is a freelance copywriter and owner of Proverbs Studio - a custom bridal gown studio. Wed, 17 Nov 2021 - 19min - 46 - How can Parents Raise Children with Healthy Body Image and Self-Esteem?
In recent years, one stark issue that has surfaced is our children’s state of mental health — events like the heartbreaking incident at River Valley High and rising suicides among those aged 10-19 confront us. A recent poll conducted among 600 youth also revealed that more than half rarely or almost never share their personal problems with family. With such worrying incidents and statistics, how can parents help their children have a healthy view of themselves and know when to seek help?
Joining our host, Alicia Boo, for this episode is Dr. Liow Pei Hsiang — a psychiatrist, and mother of three young adult daughters. They share about and discuss the unique challenges that both youth and parents face in the specific aspects of emotional development, body image, self-esteem — and how parents can be alert to identify telling signs of when their children might be struggling and offer needful intervention.

Thu, 28 Oct 2021 - 24min - 45 - How to Support a Grieving Parent?
"For better or for worse, till death do us part." We are all familiar with these words. But what happens when death parts us earlier than expected?

She co-founded a voluntary welfare organisation in Singapore that focused on supporting the bereaved, and served on the management board for 20 years. Apart from being a practising counsellor, she is a certified Life Coach and Grief Recovery Specialist. Thu, 30 Sep 2021 - 29min - 43 - Delighting in My Child at Every Stage
Life in Singapore is really busy. Parents struggle to just find time for themselves, and it is a challenge sometimes to spend dedicated, committed and intentional time with our children, especially as they get older.
As new parents, it is easy and natural to be caught up in the cuteness of our babies, even though we may be sleep deprived or exhausted. But as our child gets older, sometimes the sense of delight can start to dwindle as we have to deal with poor behaviour, tantrums and quarrels.
In this special Children's Day episode, our host Joanna Koh-Hoe chats with Alicia and Ember on their mother-daughter relationship, how Alicia relates with her other children, and how parents can capture the wonder and unique moments of their child's growing years.
Alicia Boo is a working mother and the Principal Counsellor at Focus on the Family Singapore. She is also a speaker and trainer who engages with youth, young adults and parents, equipping and inspiring them for significant living and to build strong families.
Alicia is a mother of 4 children aged 5-11 years old, including a pair of twins. Ember is her second child and she is a dynamic and positive girl who is passionate about sports and loves horses. Ember also enjoys hugs from her parents!

Thu, 16 Sep 2021 - 32min - 42 - Because We Love Our Land: Parenting and National Service
National Service (NS) in Singapore has indeed become very different over the years – some may say for better or for worse, but it remains an important rite of passage for males in Singapore. In fact, it is a major milestone not just for the enlistees, but perhaps more so for the parents who have to “release” their sons to what they might be seen as “hardship” and “danger”.
As Singapore celebrates National Day in August, we want to highlight the significant roles parents and family members play in supporting our sons in serving National Service.
In this episode, we discuss how parents can help prepare their sons for National Service, how family dynamics may change because of NS and the perspectives the family should adopt as our sons enlist and serve the nation. Join our host Aaron Ng, as he dialogues with Calvin and Lucas Chin, on their NS journey as father and son.
Calvin is a father of four sons, with his 2 older sons currently serving their NS. He is aged 47 and works as an account manager. He enjoys cycling and playing the guitar. Lucas, aged 20, is Calvin's eldest son and he is currently a National Serviceman Full-time (NSF) with the Republic of Singapore Air Force, 608 Squadron.

Thu, 05 Aug 2021 - 24min - 40 - Do Youths Still Value Marriage Today?
Marriage is one of the most significant relationships two people can share. It can be the source of our greatest joy, but can also bring about its fair share of hurts. There has been much media attention given to marriages and divorce in Singapore in recent times, such as: the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on current and future marriages, fewer marriages and divorce rates, and the possible repercussions of an amicable divorce option on marriages in Singapore.
What are the marital aspirations of youth in Singapore today? How are these influenced by their parents, and what can family members do to support them during this season of adulting?
In this episode of the ParentEd podcast, host Aaron Ng hears from 2 young adult guests, Abigayle Huan and Samuel Law, who share candidly about how their parents have shaped their perspectives on relationships and marriage. They also share how they desire to build healthy relationships with their friends and their personal take towards marriage.

Thu, 08 Jul 2021 - 19min - 37 - Dad's Report Card: How Did I Score?
Report Card. For most, these two words bring a sense of dread and anxiety! But without an evaluation now and then, how do you know if you are doing well or what you need to work on?
Just like how academic report cards are milestone checks on how we are doing in our studies, does your Dad similarly help guide you in life? On the other hand, how might a child evaluate his or her father?
Amos and Nathan Ang join host, Joanna Koh-Hoe, in this lively conversation to share how their relationship developed after having an honest review of it at a father-son adventure camp.
Amos works with an international nonprofit organization and is also a professional trainer and coach. He has been married for 24 years to Karen and they have 2 sons. Nathan is their older son and he recently completed serving his National Service as an officer in the Singapore Armed Forces. He is currently waiting to start university. As a family, they love exploring new places and playing games together.
With the pandemic bringing one more thing for dads to worry about, Focus on the Family Singapore wants to honour fathers for giving us their best through life’s highs and lows. As strong as they may appear to be, dads also need to know they are loved, seen, and good enough.
Check out our fun e-report card and give your Dad a score on how well he’s been doing. He could always use a little encouragement. www.family.org.sg/StrongerwithDad

Wed, 07 Oct 2020 - 20min - 17 - Kids' Ages and Marriage Stages
Like all living things, relationships are like living organisms. We grow, we feel, we change inside and out. Like how a tree, for example, can be affected by a rough season of minimal or no rain, marriages can be affected when they are not being nourished or cared for.
We often talk about how having children changes the dynamics of your marriage. And with parents of newborns, well meaning parents with more experience often tell the newbies things like “it will get better”. But how does “it” exactly get better? Do our kids’ age change our marriage? How do we grow together?
Joanna Koh-Hoe, CEO of Focus on the Family Singapore, chats with husband-and-wife, Boaz and Claire Nazar, as they share candid stories about their journey as a married couple, and how they handle the changes and transitions of their children growing up.
Boaz and Claire are practising lawyers who share a passion to see families and marriage thrive against the odds. They are Master Trainers in the Prevention and Relationship Education Program (PREP®), and oversee the Family Life ministry as lay leaders at Cornerstone Community Church, as well as volunteer as family-life educators with Focus on the Family Singapore.
The couple has over 20 years of experience conducting marriage preparation classes, and have also conducted marriage mentoring training for the past 10 years. Claire also regularly shares on marriage and Family through media interviews for radio, TV and newspapers about family and marriage.
Boaz & Claire have been married for 23 years and have 2 children, 21 years and 15 years old.
