Welcome to 'Navigating New York', a Podcast where I chat to people living and working in one of the most fast paced cities in the world. These conversations will explore both the professional and personal journeys my guests have been on in the Big Apple. Whether you are living in New York, planning to move, or just interested in hearing real stories from people pursuing the 'American Dream' I hope you enjoy.
- 40 - Vivienne Sayers O'Callaghan
Fáilte ar ais go Navigating New York! On this episode I chat to TikTok sensation @Vivienne_in_nyc
Vivienne is a new arrival to the Big Apple and her energy and enthusiasm is infectious! It is truly mind blowing to see what Vivienne has achieved in less than a year here - Vivienne is a brilliant example of what you can achieve with a little bit of self belief and, as she puts it, some "chancing of the arm"!
Even as someone almost a decade older, I draw so much inspiration from Vivienne - she is unapolegitcally authentic, and that authenticity has amassed her over 150,000 followers on TikTok!
Through social media, Vivienne is promoting the Irish Language and making Irish culture more accessible to an Irish American audience.
If you are a newcomer to New York, or perhaps you are considering a new venture - you will get so much from this conversation!

Tue, 12 Mar 2024 - 38 - Andrew Lynch CEO Mason Alexander & Enable
In this episode of Navigating New York, I caught up with my friend Andrew Lynch. I met Andrew last year in New York, and ever since, I've been fascinated by his story. Andrew is the founder & CEO of Mason Alexander, a talent solutions company he started in Ireland that has expanded internationally, and more recently Andrew started a new business venture starting a company called Enable, a digital services company sourcing engineering teams for clients across the globe.
Beyond his impressive resume, what is really striking about Andrew is his relentless drive for progress, not perfection. In our chat, he is honest about the highs and lows of growing in business and why he's all in on what he does. I really enjoy Andrews energy and honesty - and its clear why he is a successful team leader. I hope you are as inspired by Andrews message as I am!

Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 35 - Maurice Barron
Back by popular demand! I was so thrilled to get to sit down and chat to one of my first ever guests on Navigating New York, Maurice Barron. Maurice spoke to me in February 2021 after what had been an extremely challenging year for he and his wife Kandice as their baby girl, Ava, was diagnosed with a rare form of Kidney Cancer with an extremely low survival rate.
In our 1st episode, Maurice shared some of the darkest and most challenging moments they experienced during Ava’s treatment. Maurice also spoke about how First Lady Jill Biden’s book helped him find moments of joy as often as he could.
During this time, Maurice sent a letter to the President of the United States about the journey Ava was on, and how inspiring the Biden family had been for them during their darkest moments. What transpired from that letter is a story of hope and belief. I am so thrilled to report that Ava is healthy, happy and changing the world one day at a time! I hope you enjoy this inspiring conversation.

Sat, 16 Dec 2023 - 34 - Jack McGarry The Dead Rabbit
On this episode of Navigating New York, I got to visit the world renowned Dead Rabbit Pubin Lower Manhattan to chat with Managing Director and Co-founder, Jack McGarry.
This episode is one of the most powerful interviews I have ever had the pleasure of hosting. I chat to Jack about his story; from being a glass collector in his local family pub in Belfast at age 15, to being awarded world’s best bartender in his early 20’s in New York, to where he is now – a dynamic, influential entrepreneur on a mission to redefine the Irish Hospitality experience and promote the ‘Ireland of today’ on a global scale.
Jack speaks with rigorous honesty about his journey – the good parts and the bad. He shares some valuable advice on what it takes to be successful in running and scaling a business (Jack was recently named in Crain's New York Business 2023 class of 40 Under 40) as well as his own methods for constant self-development and evolvement.
Jack is making a major contribution to Irish Culture in New York and his mission to challenge the stereotypes and synthetic representations of Ireland across America is one that is consistently building momentum and recognition. On top of being extremely inspiring, Jack is also one of the humblest people I have ever come across. It was a real pleasure to get to sit in the Dead Rabbit and chat with Belfast’s own, Jack McGarry.

Sat, 23 Sep 2023 - 30 - Navigating New York with Peter Quinn
On this Episode I speak to one of Irish America’s greatest and most respected writers; Peter Quinn.
Peter is a Novelist, Political Historian, and Foremost Chronicler of New York City. Peter was hired in 1979 by Governor Hugh Carey as his chief speechwriter. He continued in that role under Governor Mario Cuomo, helping craft the Governor's 1984 Democratic Convention speech and his address on religion and politics at Notre Dame University. Peter was also chief speechwriter for Time, as well as editorial director for Time Warner, and found an avocation in writing about his Irish heritage. In his first novel, Banished Children of Eve, he explores the after-effects of the vast Irish immigration into New York City following the famine of 1847. Banished Children of Eve won an American Book Award.
Looking for Jimmy: In Search of Irish America, a collection of non-fiction pieces, was published in 2007. Colum McCann has summed up Quinn's trilogy of historical detective novels -- Hour of the Cat(2005), The Man Who Never Returned (2010), and Dry Bones (2013) –have been described as "generous and agile and profound."Quinn co-wrote the script for the 1987 television documentary "McSorley's New York," which was awarded a New York-area Emmy for "Outstanding Historical Programming." He has participated as a guest commentator in several PBS documentaries, including The Irish in America; New York: A Documentary Film; The Life and Times of Stephen Foster, as well as the Academy Award-nominated film, The Passion of Sister Rose. He was also an advisor on Martin Scorsese's film Gangs of New York.
Peter’s knowledge of Irish America is unparalleled and his recent memoir “Cross Bronx” is a one-of-a-kind account of his adventures as ad man, archivist, teacher, Wall Street messenger, court officer, political speechwriter, corporate scribe, and award-winning novelist. Quinn is a New Yorker through and through and it was a great honor to have him as a guest on the Podcast.

Mon, 19 Dec 2022 - 29 - Navigating New York with Damien Dempsey
I am really excited to introduce my guest for this episode, the one and only, Damien Dempsey. It was a dream come true to get to have this chat with Damien, described by many as the "Voice of a Generation."
If you’re a Damo fan, you’ll know that his song “Apple of My Eye” is all about his love for New York City - and in our conversation he tells me about how coming here as a young musician helped him to believe in himself and how he met some of his greatest friends and mentors here in the City.
As a young musician in Dublin, Damien felt that people looked down on him for writing songs about the social issues of modern-day Ireland, and for singing in his own accent. These are two important attributes that have come to define Damien as an Artist.
When he was in his twenties, Damien came to New York and played his songs in the famous Manhattan bar ‘Rocky Sullivan's’ – which attracted an eclectic group of artists, writers, NYPD officers, lawyers and politicians back in the day. Rocky’s was owned by a mutual friend of ours – retired NYPD Chief of Homicide and proud Irish American, Brian McCabe, who kindly made this episode possible.
When I started this podcast I had a list of ‘dream guests’ and Damien Dempsey was one of them - so I am beyond grateful that I got to have him on
In this episode Damien speaks honestly about the shame and guilt we have been forced to feel as a Nation, His respect for the Irish that travelled the world and set down a framework for future generations and the importance of spirituality, of travelling the world and how music can help us through life.
I really got so much from this conversation with Damo and I hope you find some comfort and inspiration from his message.

Thu, 17 Nov 2022 - 27 - Navigating New York with MacDara Hosty - Project Empower
On this week’s Episode I speak to MacDara Hosty a man I had the pleasure of meeting this Summer in NY when he was here to launch Project Empower.
In June of 2022 lifelong Galway friends Damian Browne and Fergus Farrell set off on an unsupported row in a 6 meter boat across the Atlantic from New York City to Galway to raise money for four important Charities: Ability West, Galway Simon Community, MADRA Dog Rescue and NRH Foundation
However, after two weeks out at Sea due to a serious medical condition Fergus had to be rescued from the Boat and Project Empower has since been 1 man rowing now for about 3 months across the Atlantic. Toward the end of this week, Damian Browne is set to finally complete Project Empower and row in to Galway Bay!MacDara has been pivotal in the Project Empower Team and helped to oversee much of the preparation, fundraising and management of this unique project. I talk to Mac about how Project Empower came about, Damian and Gussy’s own inspirational stories, the challenges throughout the Project, how inspirational it has been to be able to track the journey live and the penultimate homecoming for Damian in Galway this weekend.
If you want to support Project Empower go to projectempower.ie

Mon, 15 Aug 2022 - 24 - Navigating New York with Sober St. Patrick's Day
Happy St Patrick’s week! It is of course St Patrick’s day this Thursday and in honor of that this weeks episode is with two amazing women who are involved with a great organization in NY called Sober St. Patrick’s day. Today I chat to Executive Director of Sober St Patrick’s Day, Tami Ellen McLaughin and Board Member Elizabeth Stack. who is also the Executive Director of The Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany.
The ladies tell me what Sober St. Patrick's day is all about and everything going on with the group this Thursday in New York (and all year round!). We chat about the stereotype we as Irish people face globally and how although it is great to enjoy and celebrate St Patrick's Day – it is also important that we try not to feed in to the stereotype of being a Nation who’s culture revolves around alcohol. I really admire this group for creating a space to enjoy our Irish Culture and Heritage in a way that ensures St. Patrick’s Day is not seen as just an excuse for everyone to wear green and get drunk. What I particularly admire is that it's not a group that is anti-alcohol, but that it creates space to celebrate in an alternative way.
You can find out everything you need to know about Sober St Patrick's day by visiting their website www.soberstpatricksday.orgor by following them on twitter @soberstpatsday and see how you can get involved with them to march in the parade, attend their post –parade party or join the celebrations virtually. I hope you enjoy!

Mon, 14 Mar 2022 - 23 - Navigating New York with Gemma Allen
Happy International Women's day/week/month!
On this weeks episode I speak to Gemma Allen, the vice president of B2C technology at IDA Ireland. In her current role with IDA Ireland, she is responsible for building relations with business leaders, political stakeholders and key industry players furthering foreign direct investment into Ireland. Gemma has over 15 years’ experience working with the world’s largest technology companies in the U.S. and Europe.
Gemma is from Blackrock in County Cork and is a mum of 2 gorgeous girls: Esme & Edie and Gemma and her husband Leo live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I wanted to get Gemma on to the podcast to hear her perspective and experience as a Woman working in the Tech Industry and how in her role, she channels international investment into Ireland from New York.
I also was keen to chat with Gemma because she is massive advocate for Women and after reading a few of her articles on women breaking barriers in the workplace, overcoming imposter syndromethe challenges that come with becoming a new mum – I needed to get her on. Gemma also shared with me the pain of losing her Mum 2 years ago and the challenge it presented her after just giving birth to a new born and trying to get home to Ireland all in just a couple of days. You’ll hear that Gemma and I discuss her initiative to create a support group for New Irish Mums in New York and since this conversation Gemma set up an email address to facilitate the groups formation, if you want to get in touch with Gemma about this the email address is:
"Neart" is irish for strength or unity and "mna" is women. I am really excited to be involved with Gemma's initiative. Since recording Gemma recently became a contributor for NASDAQ and I hope you'll be as inspired by her as I am.

Tue, 01 Mar 2022 - 21 - Navigating New York with Daniel Yankee
Welcome back to Navigating New York!
On this week’s episode I chat to Peloton’s first ever Irish fitness instructor, Daniel McKenna aka Daniel Yankee.
Daniel is 29 and has been living in New York for almost 5 years. Known by his friends and clients as Daniel Yankee, he was born here in the Bronx, but raised in his beloved County Monaghan.
Growing up Daniel says his Mum was his biggest inspiration and is still his greatest supporter. As a PE teacher, she encouraged Daniel to try every sport he could. However Daniel’s talent on the Gaelic Football field is what brought him to some of the highest levels of the sport in Ireland, playing at all levels for his County and winning an All-Ireland Championship with his Club Truagh Gaels in Croke Park in 2014 - putting away 1.7 from play on the day himself. His talent in GAA brought him to Boston and Chicago and Daniel eventually followed his aspiration to move to New York in 2017 where he had been recruited to play for Sligo GAA. The day after he landed at JFK, he started laboring as an electrician in Lower Manhattan, and his new adventure began.
Daniel did what he could to make ends meet while he pursued his dream of becoming a fitness instructor on the side. Early mornings and late nights working 2 jobs, travelling the length of Manhattan every day took a toll on Daniel but he never stopped hustling. After he got one lucky break in a chain of gyms he kept his eyes on the prize and developed as a personal trainer with various certifications and built experience taking as many clients and group classes as he possibly could. During the pandemic, Daniel started his own fitness group, the Irish Yank Society, that started out as virtual kettle bell class people could do from home but as restrictions eased, transformed into a very popular outdoor class down the street from his apartment in Greenwich Village.
In late 2020 Daniel got approached by Peloton to audition to become a fitness instructor for what he describes as his absolute dream job. For anyone unfamiliar, Peloton is the world’s largest interactive fitness platform with almost 6 million members. Peloton peaked during the pandemic because they had already developed a new concept in Fitness using technology, content and best-in-class instructors to empower people to reach their fitness goals at home. Peloton are known for their sleek treadmill and stationary bike you can buy and have delivered and set up in your home, as well as their App for equipment free workouts. It’s well known that peloton instructors are handpicked and become like celebrities within the peloton community! In our chat Daniel talks about the struggles he faced on his way to this huge success and I hope you take as much from his story as I did!

Tue, 19 Oct 2021 - 18 - Navigating New York with Mickey Coleman
On this week’s Episode I chat to Mickey Coleman, a well-known &respected Tyrone man living in New York for 10 years. Mickey has two All Ireland Football Medals with Tyrone from 2003 and 2005, and is still very involved in the GAA here in New York with his club. Rockland.
When he moved to New York Mickey met his now wife Erin, and the pair have two gorgeous young sons. Mickey and Erin are both musicians and Erin runs her own School of Irish Music & Arts. On top of all of that, Mickey owns his own construction company Shoreline Builders and has navigated his journey in New York very impressively.
However, just 5 months ago everything changed for Mickey when he suffered what’s known as a widow maker heart attack, a form of heart attack with only a 6% survival rate .At just 41 years of age and a very fit and healthy father of 2, the heart attack completely changed Mickey's approach to life.
We chat about what Mickey calls a spiritual awakening, and a new approach to life that encompasses 3 main areas of wellness, physical, mental and spiritual. Mickey’s recovery and heart functionality has stumped his doctors and he tells me why he thinks a plant based diet is medicine for the body.
Mickey and Erin have set up an Instagram page called @heartyplantbasedfood which is an account full of food recipes they believe will change your Health & Wellbeing.
We chat about all of this but not before I get Mickey’s predictions on the All-Ireland Final this Saturday between Tyrone and Mayo!
I hope you enjoy!

Thu, 09 Sep 2021 - 17 - Navigating New York with Aisling Daly
On this week's Episode I chat to Aisling Daly, a County Offaly woman who has been living in New York for 8 years. This episode touches on two big areas of interest for many of my lovely podcast listeners: women working in the Construction Industry & ladies Gaelic Football & Camogie in NYC.
Aisling and I discuss how she Navigated her career path in New York and the great opportunities there are here for women working in Construction. Aisling explains the importance of being open minded and determined when starting out in the construction world and the variety of roles that are out there! We also talk about Aisling's passion for Gaelic games and Camogie and the trojan work she has put in over the years to develop Camogie in NY. Aisling coaches St Brigid's junior football team and has been heavily involved with the New York development squads– coaching young girls from under 7 right up to youth development teams that have travelled around the US playing Camogie.
Aisling has been growing the game from grass roots level right up to forming her own club, Annie Moore's in 2018. Annie Moore's is team of mostly American born players and ladies who have never played the sport before. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, Annie Moore's made history and won the New York League against an impressive Liberty Gaels side – another strong club formed in NY in 2015. After their historic NY League win, this novel team went on to win their first ever North American Intermediate title in Boston last Sunday.
Aisling is a woman who likes to keep fit and healthy, however in 2018 she was hit with a rare illness that left her having to slow down on all fronts. After feeling very unwell, spending time in hospital and receiving surgery, Aisling learned that she had a spontaneous CSF leak in her spine. Her ability to work, coach and train like she had been was completely changed and her condition still effects her now, 3 years later. We reflect on the importance of self care, having good people around you, and taking life (and the GAA!) with a pinch of salt. I hope you enjoy!

Mon, 30 Aug 2021 - 16 - Navigating New York with Colin Broderick
On this week’s episode I chat to Colin Broderick, a Northern Irish author, filmmaker and playwright living in New York City. Colin is a man I have wanted on the Podcast since I started Navigating New York, his work has had a profound effect on me personally and I was honored to have had this chat with him.
Just 14 years ago, Colin was nearing the end of the road. Lost in the depths of alcohol addiction Colin found himself in the unfortunate position of being completely down and out in New York. From spending time in Jail to asking strangers for dollars around Time Square to fuel his alcohol addiction – Colin describes in this episode the moment his life changed, when he was either going to end his life, or try to recover.
And recover he has; today Colin has written 4 books, ‘Orangutan’ ‘That’s That’ ‘The Writing Irish of New York’ and ‘Church End’. He has written and directed 2 incredible feature films “Emerald City” and “A Bend in the River” and on the morning of our recording, "A Bend in the River" had just received 2 IFTA Nominations.
What I admire most about Colin is his honesty, he never sugar coats how bad things got for him and that makes his journey to where he is now even more brilliant. No one has navigated New York quite like this man and I hope through this Episode and by checking out Colin's work you will be inspired too. . You can check out all of Colin's books and information about his films at colinbroderick.com and I very much encourage you to do so - you won't regret it!

Thu, 29 Jul 2021 - 15 - Navigating New York with Caroline Wilkins
On this week’s Episode I chat to Jewelry Designer and Goldsmith Caroline Wilkins, a Cork Lady living in New York for over 8 years. Caroline grew up in a very musical household in Ireland and Singing and the Arts have always been a big part of her life
Before moving to New York Caroline was in a Blues Band with her Father in Ireland and then had her own band in Toronto, but it wasn’t until 2016 that her creative journey in hand-made jewelry began.
Caroline’s jewelry line StickyBackBailey has come a long way from her hand crafting one-of-a-kind pieces in her apartment in Manhattan to sell at pop-up fairs, to now becoming a Gold Smith working with precious metals to design high-end jewelry collections that represent creativity, inspiration, beauty within, female empowerment and LOVE.
It hasn’t been an easy road for Caroline but her journey is seriously inspiring. Caroline speaks so eloquently and honestly about the importance of minding your mental health, creativity as a vehicle for expression and healing, following your heart, sticking with the creative process if it lights a fire within you… and not allowing Society to dictate what we think we should be doing with our lives.
This was a really special Episode and I hope you are as inspired and enlightened by Caroline’s message as I am. Her jewelry is available for sale at www.sbbthecollection.com or find her on Instagram @sbbthecollection

Mon, 29 Mar 2021 - 10 - Navigating New York with Pete O'Connell
On this weeks Episode I speak to a County Meath Man who has been living and working in New York for over 40 years. Pete O’Connell owns and runs numerous successful bars and restaurants in Manhattan and having moved here in 1977, has many years of experience navigating the New York City Hospitality industry.
I feel it's so important to listen and learn from people like Pete because he has been Navigating New York for decades and has a very interesting and broad perspective on life here. Pete has not only survived for 40 years in New York but has thrived and learned and reinvented himself many times to keep his businesses relevant and successful.
Of course, what we can also learn from Pete is the resilience it takes to make it here. Pete speaks really openly in our conversations about how the stumbling blocks become the stepping stones to achieving our goals in life. We have a candid conversation about the challenges of being a young immigrant working in the hospitality industry and how Pete himself got lost for a time on his journey due to alcohol.
Pete is so honest and open about the challenges he faced with the lifestyle he lead in New York for many years, how he spent a bit of time in prison and how he ended up going home to Ireland to eventually sober up and has now not had a drink in 23 years. What I find particularly special about Pete is his willingness to help other people struggling, his gift is that through his own experience he can help others not feel so alone or ashamed of whatever it might be that they are struggling with. He has a wonderful way with words and a powerful message.
We recorded in one of his establishments, the BlueBell Café on 22nd and 3rd Avenue and it was my first in-person podcast! However I think my microphone was off and there was a little too much background noise but I did my best with the edit and as Pete says, "we live and we learn"...Next door to the BlueBell is Molly's Shebeen which is a beautiful old style Irish Pub and Restaurant with delicious food. Pete, at the young age of 73 is always trying new things and has now starting a new Vegan venture with a business partner Michelle Morgan; Tiger Lilly - available for pick up and delivery atThetigerlillyktchen.com
It was a real privilege to have Pete on the Podcast - I hope you enjoy!

Wed, 24 Mar 2021 - 9 - Navigating New York with Katie Daly, Cathal Moore and Sarah Riney
Happy St. Patrick’s week everyone! This week's Episode is a little different, I have not one, not two, but THREE amazing guests. Given the week that’s in it, I thought what better way to celebrate Irish people who are #NavigatingNewYork than to feature three Business Owners who have held on to their hats over the past 12 months. Each of my guests have not just kept their heads above water over the past year but have reshaped the way they do business, I so admire how they each have kept going and kept focused in spite of the major setbacks brought about by the pandemic.
I know when everything reopens we will be keen to support our own, and I’m so happy to have a little platform here to share these short but inspirational conversations.
First up: Katie Daly!
Katie is the founder and owner of Katie Daly’s Ireland, an Ireland destination specialist that captures Ireland, its people and its experiences, in carefully hand-crafted, custom-made unique tours for individuals and small groups. Katie has 20 years experience in the tourism industry and her expertise in planning once in a life time, magical, curated tours of Ireland is unparalleled. Katie's ability to do business has been entirely halted by the ban on International travel, but she has not stopped ensuring her brand is at its best for wen travel resumes. Her love and knowledge for Ireland shines through on her instagram and twitter pages @katiedalysireland
Second up: Cathal Moore!
When I think of Cathal, the saying "A One Man Band" comes to mind. Cathal owns "Moore PA Hire" which in my mind is New York City's Premiere Production Company. Cathal and his small team run Audio, Visual and Lighting for large scale corporate events in New York City and his production quality is top notch. Now, due to the pandemic and the lack of any "Live Events" Cathal completely "up skilled" and now Moore PA Hire are Specialists in Virtual Event Streaming, Studio & Green Screen and Broadcasting. He has been hired to host global conferences and live events from his Studio in Queens - and they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks! I joke! Find Cathal at Moorepahire.com or @MoorePAHire on twitter and facebook.
Thirdly: Sarah Riney!
Sarah Riney is the beauty and brains behind "Clover and Ivy Events" her US based wedding & event planning business. Clover & Ivy Events provide full or partial planning services for weddings and events in New York, Connecticut & overseas in Ireland. They work with clients to build custom packages to suit their budget requirements, and to provide a seamless and memorable experience for any event. Sarah was born in Queens but spent half of her life in Ireland, she had a true Irish American upbringing and she brings that love for both places in to panning the dream wedding for her clients in Ireland, New York and Connecticut. Although many wedding had to be cancelled, Sarah has been building up herPlease rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.com

Mon, 08 Mar 2021 - 7 - Navigating New York with Don O'Neill
On this weeks Episode I talk to my dear friend Don O’Neill. Don, who is originally from Ballyheigue in County Kerry has been living in New York for 28 years. Don is one of Irelands most successful and beloved Fashion Designers and has dressed some of the worlds biggest Celebrities including, Orprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle, Taylor Swift, Khloe Kardashian and Carrie Underwood, to name a few.
Don originally trained as a Chef but soon after graduation he followed his true passion in fashion and design, after winning a full tuition scholarship to the Barbara Bourke College of Fashion in Dublin. Don worked in London and then Paris where he met his husband Pascal before finally settling in New York 28 years ago.
Don not only creates exquisite bridal gowns and couture collections that allow the women wearing them to feel like goddesses and light up a room, but he also inspires anyone he meets to spread love and light and kindness, just as he does,
Like so many industries Covid has radically changed the Fashion Industry, and the label Don created many years ago “THEIA” “meaning "Goddess of Light” in Greek Mythology, decided to go in a different direction, completely reshaping its design team and management... leaving Don at a challenging point in his life and career.
In this conversation we talk about how our identities are often tied to our work and the struggle of breaking away from that mindset. We also chat about Dons upcoming book, his journey in fashion, his sexuality and spirituality, losing his mum and his love for Ireland.
I can’t thank Don enough for being so open with me for this episode, and just a heads up, it gets a little bit emotional at times but I think you will be touched and inspired by what a talented and unique person Don is. I hope that no matter what challenges you may be facing that you can be inspired by Dons faith, honesty and vulnerability as we talk about how he is currently navigating an uncertain part of his own journey in New York.

Tue, 02 Mar 2021 - 6 - Navigating New York with Mary O
On this weeks Episode I chat with Mary O’Halloran, a Mayo woman who has been living in New York for 30 years. Mary is the proud owner of 'Mary O’s' bar and restaurant located in Alphabet City on the Lower East Side. Mary has been in the news recently for her delicious home-made Irish soda bread scones that she has been baking in Mary O’s Kitchen and mailing all over the United States while her bar has been closed due to Covid. Mary has been doing some incredible charitable work while her bar is closed including making masks, baking scones and cooking home-made hot meals for frontline staff and homeless charities in her neighborhood.
Mary has made headlines with her baking and was recently on New York 1 News as well as RTE 2FM at home in Ireland. Her scones are being ordered and sent to California and beyond!
'Mary O’s' has been a popular NYC local since opening in 2009 , we chat about how special a place it is, as well as the hard work she has put in there for over a decade resulting in it being an extremely popular (and very well-reviewed) bar and restaurant in Manhattan.
Mary is so inspirational because on top of running her own business, she has raised her 6 kids in Manhattan. We chat about the pros and cons of raising a family in New York and her temporary move home to Ireland.
I caught up with Mary while she was baking scones in her kitchen so please forgive a few sound glitches we had. Mary’s delicious scones can be ordered through her website maryos.nyc - they are the perfect present for friends or family over the month of March. I love how positive and hardworking Mary is and I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did.

On this weeks episode I chat with the legend John Duddy. John, also known as “The Derry Destroyer” was a Professional boxer who fought from 2003 to 2010 and has lived in New York for 17 years. Duddy retired from the sport of boxing with a record of just 2 loses in 31 professional fights, 18 of which where by knock out. John is no stranger to fame and success and was Irelands most beloved boxer for years. Thousands of Irish in New York have fond memories of sell-out fight nights in Madison Square Garden supporting "Irelands John Duddy".
John now pursues his 2nd passion in life, Acting. He has appeared alongside Robert De Niro and has recently stared in Colin Broderick's latest film, “Bend In The River”. However John is also a man who isn’t too proud to roll up his sleeves and do a hard days work to make his dreams a reality.
One thing John said during our chat was: “You keep the head high, you work hard and hopefully you get a second chance to touch the stars”John’s story is a unique one, and I hope you get as much strength and inspiration from it as I did.

Tue, 16 Feb 2021 - 4 - Navigating New York with Erika and Kaelin Fox
On this weeks Episode I chat with Erika & Kaelin Fox, the sisters behind #RetroFlame
"RetroFlame" is Erika's Instagram handle and the name of her fashion and lifestyle blog. With an accumulated following of over 200,000 Instagram followers, these two are trailblazing in the industry of Online Influencing. "Retroflame" started as a fun side-project for Erika when she was in college at home in Ireland and when she moved to New York 6 years ago to work in corporate fashion, she saw the following of her blog and instagram sky rocket. After graduating from college and working in beauty & makeup, Kaelin also moved to New York and started working with Erika on the expansion of Retroflame.
There is no denying these two Kerry women have seen major success in the industry of influencing, but that has not come without graft, hard work and vision. We talk about how they established themselves, their journey in New York, the perception of 'influencing' versus the reality, as well as negativity online and having the odd bout of imposter syndrome!
I really loved this chat with Erika & Kaelin and I hope you get as much enlightenment from it as I did. Please rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.com

Tue, 09 Feb 2021 - 3 - Navigating New York with Maurice Barron
On Episode 2 of the Podcast I chat with my friend Maurice Barron. I met Maurice through our GAA Club here in New York, 'Manhattan Gaels' where he was a Founding Member and Chairperson. He moved to New York 16 years ago from County Waterford in Ireland and is a true example of what working hard and taking chances can do for your career. I have always looked up to Maurice as a great mentor and friend and am delighted to share our conversation with you.
Maurice is currently Vice President of Data & Platform Solutions at Zenith, and if like me you aren't sure what "Data & Platform Solutions" actually means, Maurice explains it for us!
He wouldn't say it himself but he is hugely successful in his industry and is flown around the World to do his job.
2020 was an extremely challenging year for Maurice and his wife Kandice as their baby girl Ava was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. We talk about her battle during the height of Covid and how being in New York to get treatment possibly saved Ava's life. I hope you find Maurice's outlook on life as inspiring as I do.Please rate & review wherever you listen and if you would like to support the Podcast you can at buymeacoffee.com
