In this episode, Mr. Thomas Koruth Samuel, a Regional PCVE Consultant shared the impacts of different elements of communications such as language, tone, and imagery employed by terrorist groups in influencing the heart and mind. He spoke about Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) strategies which involves developing counter-narratives. He then shared recommendations from his article ‘At the Crossroads: Rethinking the Role of Education in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism’, which touched on a whole-of-education PCVE approach. This episode is moderated by Ms. Nurul Hidayah Mohd Noar, research officer at SEARCCT.

Dalam bahagian kedua ini, Encik Sassi kembali bersama kami untuk mendalami peranan penting pendidikan dalam strategi mencegah dan menangani faham pelampau keganasan (PCVE). Perbincangan ini menumpukan kepada pendekatan pendidikan menyeluruh yang melibatkan kerjasama antara golongan pendidik, pembuat dasar dan komuniti. Episod ini turut membincangkan cadangan praktikal dalam mengintegrasikan elemen pendidikan dalam kerangka PCVE yang lebih holistik bagi mewujudkan masyarakat yang lebih berdaya tahan dan harmoni.

Ms. Mediha shared some of the best strategies to educate the public and partnerships that have worked in efforts to promote safe and ethical use of the digital space.

Our guest, Ms. Mediha Mahmood, Chief Executive Officer of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum shared with us best practices for content dissemination, guided by the Content Code. She also spoke on the roles of the Content Forum in keeping up with evolving online harms and in creating awareness among key actors in the digital space. She offered her observation of the current social media landscape. In this part two, Ms Arul shared with us how sports as a medium helps to instill prosocial behaviours essential to building community resilience. She also spoke about the relationship between youth and the media, and how they can initiate positive movements within their own communities.

In this second part of the episode, Dr Nurul Miza shared on how the ‘us vs. them’ narrative is used in messaging, and possible outcome of the radicalisation process in which the outcome may not necessarily be violent in nature. She also talked about some of the skills required to make oneself less susceptible to the influence of violent extremism.

She deliberated on the factors that could contribute to the process of radicalisation; push and pull risk factors, and the 3 key elements that make messaging appealing: framing narrative, physical structure, and method of deliverance.
