On September 23, Super Typhoon Ragasa brought heavy rain to Hualien, Taiwan. A barrier lake on the Matai’an Creek burst, sending water rushing down the valley and flooding Guangfu Township. The muddy water carried rocks and washed away bridge. The water also damaged roads and houses. After the disaster, thousands of volunteers showed up with shovels and buckets to clean up the thick mud.

On March 4th, hail surprised people all over Taiwan. The little balls of ice made loud noises on roofs. People saw the hailstones bounce off the roads. The hail even caused some traffic problems!
"It was like popcorn popping on the ground!" said a driver.
In Taipei, people were shocked by a thunderstorm mixed with hail late at night. "I thought someone was throwing marbles on my roof!"
In Taichung, the hailstones were as big as chicken eggs!
“Ouch! The sky is throwing ice!”
On Hehuan Mountain, the hailstones were as small as green peas. They covered the ground like a shiny carpet!

愚人節請Eno的爸爸來給大家講幾個 Dad Jokes(冷笑話)！笑話經過解釋就不好笑了，不過如果真的聽不懂，這裡幫大家整理一點背景資訊，若孩子問起家長就可以講解給孩子聽：

dad joke (老爹笑話) 就是冷笑話，通常簡單、幼稚、有點無聊，會讓人想翻白眼 a piece of cake 字面上是「一片蛋糕」，意思是「很簡單」 crack (someone) up 字面上是蛋殼破裂，意思是使人哈哈大笑 seven eight (ate) nine (數字8的英文跟ate同音) sharp 有兩個意思：尖尖的＆聰明的 clocks have hands (手/指針) but cannot clap：時針hour hand / 分針minute hand / 秒針second hand

Many South Koreans were surprised. They didn’t like martial law in their democratic country.

“It is. But don’t worry, it’s over now.”

Taiwan’s Biggest Earthquake in 25 Years

On April 3rd, Taiwan was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake. The quake caused buildings to collapse, and injured over 1,000 people. It was the biggest quake in 25 years.
Big rocks and dirt fell down in Taroko Gorge, damaging the trails and hurting many tourists.

Taiwan’s presidential election took place on January 13th, 2024. Lai Ching-de won the election, so he will be the next president of Taiwan.

“Dongsuan! Dongsuan!”

You must have heard this a lot recently. The phrase “Dongsuan” sounds like “Get elected (當選).” “Dongsuan” also sounds like “Frozen garlic (凍蒜).” Shouting “Frozen garlic!” is a way for people to show their enthusiasm forTaiwan’s democracy.

This is only Taiwan’s eighth time to choose a direct president. The first direct president was chosen in 1996. Over 14 million people voted this year. “Well done, citizens of Taiwan!”
