In its first full year of operation since COVID, YBK has been spotlighting local talent and building more awareness around Winnipeg's Black and Afro music scene.

Isabel Scribe and Lisa Muswagon are members of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, also known as Cross Lake in Northern Manitoba. Isabel is a fluent speaker of the Swampy Cree language, and Lisa is on the path of breaking cycles and learning Cree to teach it to the next generation.

During the COVID pandemic, Fernanda Vallejo saw a need to build a community, creating a Facebook group for Latin American Canadian women and other newcomers. That group has become the not-for-profit Latinas Manitoba.

She now has plans for a community centre and is also increasing awareness around intimate partner violence.

Mary Maytwayashing, Strong Standing Golden Eagle, is from Lake Manitoba First Nations, also known as Dog Creek. She is a mother of three children and a grandmother of eleven grandchildren. She is fluent in her language of Anishinaabemowin, which is spiritual and sacred to her people.

Upbeat and catchy songs are helping youth learn the Ojibwe language. Sherri, Joy, and Dave share their stories and language-learning journeys through Nagamoodaa!

Joy Phillips is from Hollow Water First Nation. Joy, Sherri, and Dave comprise Nagamoodaa, a musical group teaching and learning the Ojibwe language through music. After working at Wanipigow school for one year after obtaining her degree in education, she would later take a language program at Red River College, which became the genesis for Nagamoodaa.

Dave Bird is part of the titular trio that makes up Nagamoodaa, music helping youth learn the Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) language. Dave, wanting to learn more about his language, took part in an Ojbiwe Language program at Red River College, which is where he met the other members of Nagamoodaa.

When Martha Peet was a child living in Taloyoak, Nunavut, she and other Inuit families never lived a traditional life. As time passed, things changed greatly. One of the big changes was the use of planes for transportation. However, Peet says the Inuit only travelled by plane for emergencies. She remembers her first plane ride, flying to a hospital for treatment after being diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Although Peet recovered and returned home, some Inuit never returned.

Her parents were "nomads" and found it difficult to stay in one place for a long time. As a result, she grew up travelling with them by dog sled. Food insecurity is at an all-time high, and food support services are doing all they can to help out this Christmas season. However, some people fall through the cracks, and grassroots groups are there to help in those situations.
Peg City Kindness Crew Inc., a group of volunteers and compassionate individuals, is seeing firsthand the struggles Winnipeggers are facing. In their first 27 hours of accepting applications, they had 700 food hamper requests, and they're not in the business of letting people down.

Community Helpers Unite Inc. has grown significantly over the past year, upcycling food and providing meals to those in need. 🥬🍞CHU has seen how food prices have affected Winnipeggers and is doing what it can to help by providing meals, teaching how to make food last longer, and inspiring community cooperation.

Mental illness is experienced by 1 in 3 Canadians, and almost everyone faces challenges related to mental health at some point in their life. But what is the difference between mental health and mental illness, and what can we do to have a more balanced life? Navigate this topic with the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba's Rita Chahal, experts in the field, and those with personal experience.

According to Statistics Canada's Canadian Income Survey from 2021, 5.8 million Canadians, including 1.4 million children, were food insecure. Taking a closer look at home, last year, the Winnipeg Christmas Cheerboard handed out over 18,000 Christmas hampers, and the need is growing.

We've all felt the pinch of food costs and inflation, so this holiday season, it's more important than ever to support our communities, and we have Shawna Bell from the Christmas Cheerboard to tell us how we can help out.

Creativity takes a lot of work. When looking at musicians, you must write, perform, edit, and promote yourself, which only scratches the surface. It can take a toll mentally and physically, leading to burnout, so finding balance is vital.

Dr. Denise Koh was the recipient of the FWN's 2023 Most Influential Filipina Woman in the World Award. She and other doctors also collaborated on a new book examining AI in the healthcare system.

Denise McGillvary is a Cree Indigenous woman, mother, and grandmother from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in the Treaty 5 Territory. Swampy Cree is the dialect in her community. She has been an urbanized Indigenous person for about 25 years. In that time, she has been able to learn and understand Indigenous cultures from many different perspectives and respectfully utilizes and shares what she has learned.

Chance Paupanakis is a proud Swampy Cree Two Spirit person from the Kinosew Sipi Cree Nation in Treaty 5 territory. Other areas of activism he focuses on are Two Spirit resurgence, land & water preservation and MMIWG2S advocacy. Chance is passionate about working towards a better and brighter future for First Nation peoples.

Cameron Adams is a 5th-year Integrated Education student in the Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg. Cameron is ininiw-Anishinaabe and French-Canadian with Scottish and English ancestry from Gimli, Manitoba and Treaty from Memewiziibiing (Berens River), situated in Treaty 5 Territory. For the last decade, Cameron has been learning about his ancestral routes.

He developed a passion for learning nēhinawēwin in high school after meeting an Elder, Florence Paynter, who shared their story in Indian Residential School. It was there that Cameron asked his Great-Grandmother what Indigenous language she spoke, and he found out it was ininīmowin (Swampy Cree) from kinosēw sīpīhk (Norway House, MB).

Geraldine “Gramma” Shingoose is a residential school survivor who attended Muscowequan residential school from 1962 to 1971. Gramma Shingoose shares her story with schools and universities, highlighting her cherished memories of before Muscowequan residential school, her life during school, and its impacts on her life once she left.

"We Stand Together" is a series to understand better these schools' history and its impact on Indigenous communities. Join Ryan Funk and Lisa Muswagon and listen to the stories and experiences of residential school attendees and their families.

Culture is an important aspect of any community. However, culture can easily be lost if not actively cherished and cared for. In Winnipeg, immigrants have created associations and organizations that celebrate cultural diversity, creating areas of unique cultural expression and feeling.

Casa Dos Acores at the Azorean Cultural Centre is taking action to ensure younger generations are inspired to preserve the Portuguese language, culture, and history. Paulo Oliveira tells us more.
