China Myth Podcast is a self-produced immersion experience of my journey through the fascinating and misunderstood dilemmas of Chinese business culture - a reaction, a behavior, even a suggestion - and asks whether I could have achieved a better outcome with a different attitude, mindset, and approach. Because sometimes, learning how to listen is a lost art of communication.
- 176 - China’s Collective Historical Perspective & WHY IT MATTERS!
History is woven from different narratives, perspectives, and interpretations, and there is a saying that "History is written by victors."
Perhaps more poignantly, Hermann Göring, Churchill's enemy in World War II, is recorded as saying, "The victor will always be the judge, and the vanquished the accused" at the Nuremberg trials.
From the Western perspective, China has never been the victor, so our history is the only one we prescribe.
Today, as the historically defeated, colonized, and once unequally divided China rises in power and influence, most Westerners fail to contextualize their perspective of history and its collective psychological effect.

Tue, 23 Apr 2024 - 175 - The Emotional Journey of Chinese Employees
As a Western leader in China, should you be concerned that promoting someone invariably leads to others feeling apprehensive (焦虑 Jiāolǜ)?
Managing Chinese employees is simple: tell them what to do.
Leading Chinese employees is complicated for Western leaders, requiring a deep understanding of their cultural and emotional psychologies. Their responses, usually in the form of 'lip service,' are cultural displays of respect and a pragmatic way of deepening Guanxi by giving Face. Rarely do Chinese people reveal their true feelings or intentions, as their reasoning is circular and their perspective of 'Truth' is relative.

Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 174 - Texas Hold’em Psychology for Playing the China Game
The term 'Chinese arena' describes any business scenario with participants from mainland China. This term is apt because it encapsulates the emotional and psychological stresses that dominate when values and ideologies clash.
Accepting alternative paradigms is possible when we imagine learning tactics for a new 'game' in a new field of play.
Tradeoffs feel less personal, and withdrawing ethical and moral considerations become more acceptable.
Furthermore, when we reimagine our experiences in China as a game dominated by psychological warfare, like poker, we replace judgment with curiosity and craft a new persona conditioned to win the China game inside the Chinese arena.
Instead of studying ancient strategies written over two thousand years ago, we will extrapolate Art of War tactics that Chinese people utilize subconsciously based on common behavior patterns, and we will develop winning tactics that work in the new normal of post-COVID China.UPCOMING BOOK

Thu, 18 Apr 2024 - 173 - What is GOODWILL EXTRACTION in Chinese business culture?
Every interaction in China can either improve a relationship or trigger a cloak of deception called goodwill extraction. While this might sound dramatic, it simply contrasts the possible outcomes of every engagement you'll encounter doing business in China.
Once you understand your interactions in the proper cultural context, you will no longer be surprised by any response or development. In hindsight, it was entirely predictable when a trusted local partner in Nanjing began lying, cheating, and stealing from our company.
When a deficit of goodwill reaches a tipping point, it is natural in Chinese psychology to seek substitutes in other parts of the local value chain. Westerners call it corruption, but in Chinese culture, this behavior is justified and socially acceptable.
In my upcoming book, we will refer to any "bad" behavior as GOODWILL EXTRACTION because when your Guanxi engine isn't properly maintained and running smoothly, even good relationships will veer off course, and avoiding a fatal crash should be the priority of anyone competing inside the Chinese arena.

How do you perceive China TODAY (post-COVID), and are you aware of how YOUR PERCEPTIONS affect how your Chinese counterpart perceives you?
Questions about China in our collective Western consciousness have ebbed and flowed over the centuries, from an exotic oriental kingdom with vast riches to "Yellow Peril," provoking Western fears in the mid-nineteenth century that Asians, in particular the Chinese, would invade our lands and disrupt our values, to becoming our largest economic trading partner at the turn of the century to biggest threat and most consequential geopolitical competitor today.
The only thing that has endured that we can agree on is that China matters!

April 20, 2023 - You might think leading Chinese employees is simple due to their respect for hierarchy, but this presumption needs to consider the hazards of interpreting Face-giving pantomimes literally, often mistakenly. While we appreciate their song and dance performance, we must purposefully orchestrate the final act.
As we develop an awareness of the importance of TONE, literally and figuratively, and how to sidestep cultural landmines hidden in our dichotomies, more productive communication patterns will emerge.
Still, we can accelerate the creation of a new reality with specific pointers regarding how we interact with local Chinese staff and direct reports.
Additionally, we will discuss Chinese work ethics in relation to their values and how it affects their behavior, both seen and unseen, known and unknown and where their priorities lie.

Fri, 21 Apr 2023 - 155 - Chinese Art of War NEGOTIATIONS Primer
March 8, 2023 HIGHLIGHT REELS - Knowledge is POWER.
Suppose you boil down what Sun Tzu teaches in the Art of War (顺子兵法 Shùnzi bīngfǎ). It comes down to understanding how your competitors think, how they are likely to behave, and exercising tactics based on the increasing likelihood of influencing them to your advantage.
Success in the Chinese arena begins with AWARENESS (意识 yìshí) and then developing tactics and counter-tactics (方法 | 技巧 fāngfǎ | jìqiǎo) for their conscious and subconscious tendencies during negotiations.

Thu, 16 Mar 2023 - 154 - Chinese Cultural Dichotomy of NEGOTIATIONS
March 8, 2023 HIGHLIGHT REELS - Chinese Cultural dichotomies with the West categorize value differences likely to cause frustration and conflict and redirect opportunities for cooperation toward unintended disorder, confusion, and chaos.
Everything in business involves negotiation in one form or another. Yet, this activity with counterparts in China often leads to promising outcomes that turn sour or a long- drawn-out process that dampens the initial excitement and optimism of cooperating.
Either way, it is a cultural dichotomy we need to reconcile before proceeding.

Wed, 15 Mar 2023 - 153 - The Chinese Guanxi Engine EXPLAINED
March 8, 2023 HIGHLIGHT REELS - Guanxi (关系) is exceptionally difficult to translate because its application in the Chinese cultural context is dynamic, emotional, and nuanced depending on the “relationship,” often misrepresented as its translation.
Grammatically, Guanxi is a noun, but it resolves a situation as an adjective and an explanation like an adverb, as its level is the overarching factor influencing behaviors. Hence, we simplify its understanding with a metaphor, the GUANXI ENGINE, which is the driving force for all interactions in China.

March 8, 2023 - They say language is the gateway into another culture, but what access does speaking Chinese grant you in China?
Due to China's Face-giving culture, speaking a little Chinese can open many doors to foreigners. That said, failing to understand how, when, and why to say things can close the windows of opportunity as quickly as your counterparts opened them, symbolic of China as a land of contradictions to many Westerners.

The Chinese mind is conditioned to leave itself an off-ramp for fear of blame, punishment, or worse. So it is natural in Chinese spoken vernacular to be vague, allowing an opportunity to pivot toward a better explanation.
A simple counter to this tendency would be to direct your query at the explanation rather than the answer…

Intuition and comprehension, rather than the truth and facts, form the basis of our perceptions, and they are misperceptions until our flawed presumptions are identified.
Yet, those flaws are abstract and demanding to recognize across disparate cultural differences, so we are left struggling against the burden of our myopia.

Excerpt from my upcoming book, After The Chinese Honeymoon
One of my first previews of the importance of Guanxi in Asian business culture were the early stories told by my Uncle John, who in the 80s was the National Sales Manager for Zenith based in Austin, Texas. Uncle John was raised in Taiwan following the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949, so his opportunities to immigrate began much earlier than we have witnessed over the past two decades of Chinese citizens flocking overseas with their wealth and children.

Thu, 13 Oct 2022 - 133 - Chinese attempts at persuasion randomly shift focus due to Confucius
Have you ever found Chinese attempts at persuasion (狡辩 jiǎobiàn) unconvincing?
Chinese have been conditioned that it is prudent to deflect blame from oneself, even before it has been assigned to them.
It's a reflex mechanism.
It is also normal for them to attempt to persuade others based on their 'Perception' of what is valuable or meaningful.
However, since they generally lack the 'Empathy' necessary to overcome the objections already in the minds of those they aim to convince, it often leads to a circular conversation.
In their Confucian-influenced 'Hierarchical' mindset, persuasion isn't necessary for leadership. Instead, it is finding the right words to frighten, dissuade, and pressure.
This is how most Chinese were raised, which is exhibited most prominently in their 'Haggling' culture.

Chinese people fundamentally think differently about their roles within any system, as well as the value of their contributions with no ethical or moral guardrails, and since their goodwill nature never abates, they will increasingly feel entitled to more, which must be satisfied to prevent ‘Goodwill Extraction’ from elsewhere.

Fri, 30 Sep 2022 - 130 - Truth-Default Theory Explains Why Chinese Talk To Strangers Differently
Are you AWARE of your own Truth-Default, which is your tendency to trust a stranger?
It's been studied and sociologically proven that "the majority of people believe most people are mostly honest most of the time."
Chinese people naturally default-to-skepticism toward people they don't know (陌生人 mòshēng rén), not just foreigners, because by definition, they only care about the level of Guanxi.
Default-to-skepticism is how they think, but you wouldn’t know it by how they behave, as every gesture of friendliness or goodwill is for the sake of developing/deepening Guanxi, while in a literal sense there isn’t any ‘trust’ as we understand its meaning in the West behind their passion and camaraderie.

Sharing an inside walk-thru of how I intend to make a business book about China more interesting and impactful for a wider audience…
[WHAT YOUR BOOK IS ABOUT IN 1-3 SENTENCES]
After The Chinese Honeymoon tells a story of love and business in China and everything in between to present Western readers with a layman’s guide to Confucianism and the Art of War so they can NOT ONLY demystify how Chinese people behave but develop strategies to influence them as well.
Achieving better outcomes in China is a physical and mental challenge that is psychologically daunting. Still, the Chinese arena becomes infinitely easier to navigate once its topography and obstacles become familiar.

What is different about playing and winning within a Chinese paradigm of rules, norms, and etiquette?
#chinabusiness #chineseculture #guanxi #negotiations #artofwar
Chapter 1: Think Different (A mindset for China business) | P1 Playing The China Game
Like Einstein's famous quote, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them," we also cannot create a different reality in China with the same mindset that led to our current one. As adults, our thinking and habits are ingrained over decades of pursuing social acceptance and rarely change without a life-altering event. Yet, those very same practices and mentality form a natural handicap in the Chinese arena, so developing a mindset for China business is paramount. You know how to play baseball, but in the Chinese paradigm, they swing a deformed club at a flat disc and expect you to run counterclockwise through shallow water.

Wed, 07 Sep 2022 - 123 - Part 4: Winning What Matters: After The Chinese Honeymoon
INSIDE LOOK at Part 4 of After The Chinese Honeymoon, which I intend to write and publish in 90 days.
In this episode, an overview of 'Part 4: Winning What Matters'
The notion that we can compartmentalize our priorities in moral dilemmas suggests our pride and self-respect reside on an immutable blockchain. It doesn't, because we are all emotional beings. The rules to play the China game are accessible, and landlines in the Chinese arena are detectable, but its winning strategies are often illogical. But once you ascribe to this paradigm, you can reimagine yourself within its topography and begin thinking differently about problematic situations.
The goal is to make better tradeoff decisions with eyes wild open rather than reacting to the unpredictability and uncertainty of all things China. With a properly tuned mindset for China business, predictable outcomes become a foregone conclusion as you become more empowered to chart a journey to your preferred destination.

INSIDE LOOK at Part 3 of After The Chinese Honeymoon, which I intend to write and publish in 90 days.
In this episode, an overview of 'Part Three: Aligning On Process'
NONCOMMITTAL! Please don't feel discouraged or frustrated at your Chinese counterparts for being noncommittal. There are simple measures to reach alignment faster that you can utilize after you understand their emotional priorities and idiosyncrasies. In a nutshell, Chinese people are culturally conditioned to prioritize their routine, which includes deeply ingrained habits and rituals, while you are likely more focused on specifics and results.
Being "open and honest" while putting all your cards on the table doesn't translate to someone more trustworthy in Chinese culture. With this approach, it's like chickens chirping at quacking ducks in search of common ground, referred to in Chinese as 鸡同鸭讲 jītóngyājiǎng, so let's explore an alternative path to reach your preferred destination. Align on "process."

Fri, 26 Aug 2022 - 121 - Part 2: Mastering Your Awareness: After The Chinese Honeymoon
INSIDE LOOK at Part Two of After The Chinese Honeymoon, which I intend to write and publish in 90 days.
In this episode, an overview of 'Part Two: Mastering Your Awareness'
If you feel 'red' storm clouds brewing in your psyche following conversations that constantly veer away from your intended topic, it likely means frustration has overwhelmed your usual sensibilities and emotional intelligence. You rationalize your displeasure, justify your disdain, and disregard your decorum. Your playbook isn't working, what you witness is baffling, and you're overwhelmed by fatalistic despair. Does this sound like a script for far too many of your experiences in China?
Cynical rationalizations replace your behavioral guardrails with indifference because you subconsciously excuse yourself from the inexcusable and become what you despise. We must master our awareness to avoid exacerbating the fallout from controversy in China because everything can be acceptable with a proper display of Face-giving rituals. But first, you must overcome hidden psychological constraints by mastering your awareness.

WRITE & PUBLISH A BOOK IN 90 DAYS!
'After The Chinese Honeymoon' is a book that I will write and publish in 90 days, and I will share every thought and idea publicly to discover new ideas from you.
In this first episode, the working outline and an overview of 'Part One: Playing The China Game'
If you see a chasm of metaphorical 'red' whenever you contemplate the next steps in China, it likely means that progress has stalled. Your fears will predetermine your results. Your communications are counterproductive and appear to push you further from reaching a compromise or finding a viable solution. Tragically, more advice, knowledge, or insight is unlikely to illuminate the way forward in these mercurial situations, so the ubiquitous "expertise" surrounding China becomes white noise in an already chaotic scene.
A mindset shift, a new perspective, and a new way of thinking are now needed to reach the next level of success, and this begins by reimagining the playing field, which we call the Chinese arena, and ourselves as recruits that need to learn new rules, tactics, and strategies to prevail. It's a physical as well as a mental game.

The last "Taiwan Crisis" began in 1995, when Taiwan's President, Lee Teng-hui was allowed to visit the US and give a speech at his alma mater, Cornell University.
This led to China conducting war games, missile tests, and live fire drills in the Taiwan Strait.
The U.S. government respondedby staging the biggest display of American military might in Asia since the Vietnam War.
Back then, the Chinese leadership was forced to acknowledge its inability to stop U.S. forces from coming to Taiwan's assistance. That was then, but this is now in 2022.

BEFORE: A warning to President Biden that the US is "playing with fire!"
DURING: Any potential mockery continued to be stifled, and displays of power were immediately projected. Live fire military exercises all around Taiwan.

Wed, 10 Aug 2022 - 113 - How did Cantonese singer Leon Lai get involved in Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit?
今夜你会不会来? Jīnyè nǐ huì bù huì lái? is a song by Cantonese singer Leon Lai (黎明 Límíng), and Chinese Internet censors blocked it!
So the question is 'why?'
It's because US Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, was "rumored" to be planning a visit to Taiwan during her Asia tour, but it wasn't on any "official" public itinerary.
For the sake of preserving Face, any 讽刺 fèngcì utterances HAD TO BE prevented by Chinese authorities. 讽刺 fèngcì means to mock with sarcasm, so any such expressions MUST be stifled before they are allowed to influence public perceptions. Then Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan, met with Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen, made some joint support statements, and left the island.

“The mindset adjustments that gradually changed my perspective began by not taking anything personally or judging strange behavior negatively.”
Goodwill is the currency upon which the Chinese Guanxi engine runs, and Face is the lubricant that keeps things running smoothly. Giving Face is easier with an attitude adjustment, or it may be perceived as disingenuous. Face is an important facet of Chinese business culture and invaluable as a means to reciprocate goodwill.
The ramifications of losing Face or causing a loss of Face are obvious, but the most important skill for playing the China game inside the Chinese arena may be allowing others to preserve their Face.
Learning how to give others a 台阶下 Táijiēxià to preserve their Face will pay numerous dividends over time.
Practical Definition:台阶下 Táijiēxià are the delivered words and gestures that allow someone to preserve their Face after a mistake.

“Words NEVER reflect a person's underlying emotions or meaning in a high-context culture such as China. Therefore, expecting double standards without judgment is the only way to retain a positive attitude.”
A life-altering experience is one of those rare occasions a person’s core beliefs are instantly transformed, while most changes are gradual and less noticeable.
While each person’s beliefs are unique, we all have more in common with those who grew up in a similar environment around the same time in history. Our core beliefs affect our judgment, especially of another person’s actions and behavior.
Self-awareness is essential to reduce the consequences of judging others, and the more we can grasp how someone else thinks, the more we should be able to create new communication patterns with them.
Practical Definition:想法 Xiǎngfǎ is a set of beliefs that are derived from a person’s attitude, emotions, and desire to preserve Face—-IT’S EQUIVALENT TO THEIR FAITH.

From the time I was old enough to imagine who I was and who I wanted to be, I always felt like I was caught between two worlds.
I wrote this song based on my personal experience growing up in Atlanta, GA (USA), and I incorporated it into my latest book long before the manuscript was written.
As my book is being published (February 18, 2022), I discovered someone that personifies how being caught "between two worlds" can become a symbol that unites us all.

Why do so many seasoned China veterans say, "China is a land of contradictions?"
This episode walks you through the major emotional influences of Chinese 心态 (xīntài), which combined with knowing someone’s Liyi (利益) calculation is a recipe for success.
Ultimately, this is where our advantage lies in doing business in China—deploying more positive imagination and purpose-driven curiosity to 摸透对方的心态 (Mō tòu duìfāng de xīntài), which means to feel the nuances of their attitude, psyche, and mentality.

How do you embrace another way of thinking when it is vastly different from your own?
ANSWER = Decode their 心态 (xīntài) and reprogram your attitude
In Chinese culture, 心态 (xīntài) goes beyond how someone thinks. It includes the state of their psyche and attitude toward how certain things make them feel based on the associated Face or Mianzi.
A person's 心态 (xīntài) is an integral aspect of their mentality, but the tipping points that trigger an adverse reaction are largely unknown to most Westerners.

In order to gain a complete picture of how Chinese feel, we need to understand the concept of 委屈 (wěiqu), which is how Chinese people feel whenever they perceive they have lost something of value.
One of the many challenges foreigners face is A) sensing what might cause someone to feel 委屈 (wěiqu) or wronged and then B) deciding whether it is worth making an adjustment.
Most foreigners, including myself once upon a time, feel our goals, and clearly communicating them is more important than worrying about how someone else "feels" about our positions or policies.
So the critical question becomes, how can we accomplish both at the same time?

In the context of traveling to China as a foreigner to conduct business, you will likely receive plenty of advice and insights from various people and sources. So if most business leaders receive training and guidance to assist with accomplishing their business objectives, the majority should be satisfied with their ROI and outcomes in China.
But the reality is quite the opposite, as most are left disappointed and frustrated compared to their initial expectations and forecasts.
Why?
It's the China Myth Dilemma, which allows wrong or out-of-context advice to create "comfortable" (mis-)perceptions that lead to foolish action. In order words, you are gradually causing your demise without realizing the flaws in your thinking and approach.
When we allow what our sources get wrong or out-of-context about China to lead to more severe myopia, our actions and resulting unsatisfactory outcomes (Reality A) can cause a negative, self-fulfilling prophecy loop. What we believe is wrong with China and corrupt about Chinese people causes us to respond accordingly, further straining our goodwill and capacity to develop genuine Guanxi relationships.

Since then, I hosted eight Meetup events (14 sessions) + this workshop to get feedback for my approach, concepts, and methodology…
