The Freedom Fridays Podcast started as Pete Clark's weekly experiment with time and focus. Where the aim was to reclaim Fridays and make them a day free from the constraints of work. The podcast has since evolved to become Pete's weekly conversation with ordinary people doing extraordinary things. We explore some of the big changes people have gone through and what’s helped the journey. The intention is to share as openly as possible some of the ingredients – the good, the bad, the ugly – that shape our shift from ‘I have to’ into ‘I choose to’. The lessons are hiding in open sight within the conversation – it’s up to you how you apply them.

In celebration of International Womens Day on March 8th Pete talks to Sarah Grattan (CEO Lifeline Northern Beaches). Sarah has had and continues to have, an extensive leadership career. She reveals her backstory to getting involved in community leadership and where her ‘bloody-mindedness’ developed and how it’s helped her in previous and current roles.

Lifeline Northern Beaches is a local charity that is part of the national Lifeline network. We opened in 1968 and have provided suicide prevention and crisis support services for more than 55 years.
Our local services are in addition to the 13 11 14 telephone line that Lifeline is most well-known for. Our team of telephone crisis supporters in Balgowlah answer more than 55,000 calls each year out of the approximate one million calls that Lifeline receives.
We provide the following low-cost and free face-to-face services to support the wellbeing of our community:
• Low-cost face-to-face Counselling
• Support Groups
• Free Financial Counselling
• Aged Care Volunteer Visitors
• Community and Workplace Training
Over the past few years there has been a significant increase in demand for the face-to-face services, with counselling sessions doubling and the financial counselling service seeing continual case-load growth. With increased demands come increased costs, and Lifeline Northern Beaches relies on the generous support from members of the community.
You can help Lifeline Northern Beaches provide local services and increase our capacity by helping us to raise funds. This can be done by either donating directly to Lifeline Northern Beaches or giving contributions that could be auctioned off or raffled in a fundraiser.
It costs Lifeline $39 to answer a call to 13 11 14 and Lifeline Northern Beaches $98 to provide a one-hour face-to-face session. Your contribution helps us support more people in need.
Thank you for supporting Lifeline Northern Beaches!https://www.lifelinenb.org.au/donation/

Thu, 09 Nov 2023 - 105 - #78 Freedom Fridays Podcast Featuring Steve Ellis
In Episode 78 Pete chats to Steve Ellis, a long-time friend and colleague who works in the same leadership and change space.
Most will have heard the expression “the cobblers shoes”. Apparently, it derives from an old Spanish proverb which roughly translates to 'the cobbler's children have no shoes'. This means that someone with a specific skill (e.g. leadership and change) is often so busy assisting others that their own affairs (e.g. leadership and change) go unattended.
The reason this is so relevant to the conversation is that Steve had a significant health scare recently and had to change his behaviour significantly. Being a leadership and change expert ‘that should be easy'…said no-one!
Pete and Steve dive into the classic ways to change our behaviours and share some polar opposite distinctions about what worked and didn’t work for Steve going through his lived experience of changing his own behaviour.
If you or anyone you know needs to change behaviour then this is a must listen.

Thu, 21 Sep 2023 - 104 - #77 Freedom Fridays Podcast Featuring David Sollars
In this episode, Pete chats to David Sollars who is a return guest also featured in episode #46.
The essence of their first conversation was Dave sharing his reflections on being provoked by something on the outside that caused him to give away his power, authority and choice.
Dave & Pete pick up the conversation nearly 2 years later to explore the journey so far and what, if any, progress has been made.
They take a deeper dive into how Dave has reclaimed his power, authority and choice and the work required to do so.
Working from the inside out Dave shares his journey of self-reflection and compassion and how he held the tension between endings and beginnings. Courageously he also shares what it’s like navigating the messy middle of the ‘neutral zone’ which is anything but neutral.
If you’re in the midst of a personal or professional transformation you don’t want to miss this one.

In Episode 75 Pete chats to another Pete – Pete Lawson, a livestock farmer based in country NSW. They met through a mutual friend and connected whilst completing the Overland Track in Tasmania.
What was intriguing about Pete’s story is the framework he was introduced to as a 19-year-old that he has used in setting and delivering on his goals ever since – not just for himself but his entire family! It’s a practical take on the "Know, Do, Be" goal-setting framework in which they chat about on-farm and off-farm assets; caring for the landscape beyond his tenure; and what sort of person he wanted to be and how that’s evolved.
It's a great example of the practical and genuine application of a theoretical framework that Pete wasn’t aware he was following. Tune in to hear some real-life examples of how you can bring it to life.

If you want your team to achieve a lot more,
please leave your hierarchy at the door.
Come join the discussion as the person you are,
be present, and curious don't judge from afar.Open yourself up to not being 'the boss',
diversity of thought should be nurtured not lost.
Every team player has the potential to share,
tho' willingness comes when there is trust and care.So be the boss that shows the spirit to create,
and not the one that needs to dominate.
And when you do leave your hierarchy at the door,
just watch how your team will achieve so much more!Show Notes: Episode #51

Glin gets raw and vulnerable pretty quickly as she recounts her life journey over the last few years. It’s such an eye and heart-opener that anyone, not just women, will be touched by the story and how Glin made it to where she is today. It’s become a little pattern for me that the conversation gets into flow and we jabber away and lose track of time so again I’ve split this into 2 parts. Part #1 is the raw story of what Glin has made peace with to be where she is today. She talks about how she has used gratitude to counter grief and the power of 5 mins a day for 4.5 years!
