Hayley has been an adviser with Almary Green since 2009 and started her financial advising career in 2004. She has won several awards for her examination achievements. She is a member of the Society for Later Life Advisers, and specialises in this area of advising clients in later life, including in relation to care fees planning and providing advice to those acting under powers of attorney. She is also an Affiliate member of the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners, (STEP) having achieved in 2011 a STEP Excellence Award for her top mark in the country in the STEP Certificate for Financial Services (Trusts and Estate Planning). Hayley reached the pinnacle of her achievements so far in November 2012 by winning the prestigious Chartered Financial Planner of the Year award. Most recently, Hayley has trained as a Certified Money Coach (CMC)® with the Money Coaching Institute. One of the few advisers in the UK to also be trained as a behavioural money coach, Hayley is able to bring a new dimension to her financial advice work, as well as providing stand alone money coaching sessions for those who wish to understand the psychological dimension of their own relationship to - and patterns over - money. In her spare time Hayley enjoys yoga and meditation as well as playing tennis and the piano (both badly!). She also loves to read and is always curious to learn something new.

What does hostage negotiation have in common with financial planning? Martin talks to former hostage negotiator Richard Mullender. After a 25-year career working in the London Metropolitan Police as a detective investigating serious crimes, Richard Mullender moved into hostage negotiation. He quickly worked his way up to become Lead Trainer at Scotland Yard’s world-renowned National Crisis and Negotiation Unit. As a hostage negotiator, Richard built his career on elite listening techniques. Since retiring, he has adapted these techniques from the field and applied them to the corporate world, teaching invaluable communication skills to governmental organisations and leading multinationals alike. Richard brings a unique breadth and depth of experience, having designed and run courses all over the world, developing the negotiation skills of officers for organisations that include the Metropolitan Police, the United Nations, the FBI. In addition to extensive crisis negotiation field experience in the UK, Richard was also deployed to Afghanistan and has been active across a wide range of international negotiation assignments. Richard was part of the negotiation team that helped secure the successful release of three UN workers in Afghanistan in 2004. Outside the world of policing, Richard has delivered programmes all over the world on elite listening techniques designed to help organisations understand their employees and clients alike on a deeper level. Richard teaches people to listen as though their lives depended on it. His techniques, gleaned from a career in the field, help his clients understand how to access someone else’s mindset – an invaluable tool at any negotiating table. He has worked across a wide range of organisations including leading multinationals, investment banks, energy companies and universities. Richard is author of Communication Secrets of a Hostage Negotiator (2012) and been covered widely in the media including by the Financial Times and BBC Radio 4.

Danby is a consultant to Platforum and chairman of Helm Godfrey a City-based firm of independent financial advisers and employee benefit consultants. He was the founder and editorial director of Taxbriefs the specialist publishing company and was a non-executive director of Nucleus Financial Group the investment platform provider. He has written and edited books, articles and learning resources about financial planning, pensions, investments and tax, including a number of Chartered Insurance Institute learning texts. He has taken a close interest in education and was on the board of Oxford Brookes University, ultimately becoming chair of governors and then Pro-Chancellor. He was chair of the Committee of University Chairmen group on governor training and education. Danby also sat on the investment committee of Wadham College - his old Oxford college where as an undergraduate he studied philosophy, politics and economics. He is a trustee of the Equal Rights Trust and has just retired as chair of the Oxford Playhouse.

His opinion sought in the trade and retail media, Alistair is frequently asked to comment on current matters, especially retirement and tax planning issues. Alistair lives in Caterham, Surrey with his wife and three children. Alistair is a keen photographer, with a particular interest in “high-dynamic range” images of architecture and landscapes. Former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb of Royal London talks to Martin about pension freedoms and some of the issues surrounding defined benefit pension transfers. Steve Webb was Minister of State for Pensions between 2010 and 2015, the longest-serving holder of the post. During that time he implemented major reforms to the state pension system, oversaw the successful introduction of automatic enrolment and played a key role in the new pension freedoms implemented in April 2015. Steve was a Liberal Democrat MP from 1997 to 2015. Before this he was professor of social policy at Bath University for two years, having previously worked for nine years as an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies. She is an economist by training and worked in fund management in the City for many years. She has advised Governments, regulators, industry bodies, corporates, finance firms, trustees and consumer groups and was Director-General of over 50s’ specialist Saga Group from 2010 to 2013. Ros was recently appointed a CBE for services to pensioners and pension provision and is the UK Government’s Business Champion for Older Workers. She is a frequent media commentator on pension issues and regularly writes articles and speaks at conferences on pension reform. She has won numerous industry awards and honours including Pensions Personality of the Year (twice), Industry Guru of the Year, Women in Public Life Award, The Times ‘Business Bigshot’ and was one of the UKs top 50 Most Influential People in Pensions in 2013 according to Pensions Insight. She is well-known as an independent voice who understands both customer and provider viewpoints. Ros has a first class honours degree in Economics from University College London, a Ph.D. degree in Economics from London School of Economics and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate from University of Westminster. She is a Governor of LSE, having also been a non-executive director and Chaired its Investment Committee for many years. She is also a Governor of the Pensions Policy Institute, and Chairs the Lord Chancellor’s Strategic Investment Board for the Ministry of Justice. Jeremy is Head of Life Planning for Serenity Financial Planning – the UK’s largest Financial Life Planning firm. Originally from a banking background, after becoming an Independent Financial Adviser in 2004, and seven years later, he experienced an life changing moment at the PFS Conference in 2011, when he was so inspired by talks from Tina Weeks, David Scarlett and Jim Lawless to make major changes to both his life and the way he worked with his clients. In 2012, Jeremy attained Registered Life Planning status with the Kinder Institute, and in 2013, joined his inspiration Tina Weeks at Serenity. A key driver for Jeremy is helping his clients find or regain direction, purpose and enthusiasm for life. A particular poignant point has been working with one client whose husband suicided in 2013. Together, in May 2017, they arranged a charitable concert in Cornwall, attracting an audience of 900 people, and raising just under £20,000 for Cornwall Search and Rescue Team and Carrick MIND.
