Practical Purpose

My goal is to ensure that my podcast, my online presence, feels like an inclusive space for all. My clients come from diverse backgrounds, with diverse experiences. As a trauma-informed coach, I never want to pressure any of my clients to speak about their stories publicly before they're ready (if they are ever ready to do so.) They deserve the right to process what they learn, making these big life changes in a way that feels safe and comforting for them. For many, safety means privacy. Or at least, privacy for now. So, keep in mind, those who felt like it was a YES to be interviewed this season, happen to all identify as women. But I do not work solely with individuals who identify as women. My clients are of all ages, gender identities, race, etc. My client's stories are each beautiful, unique, and most importantly, theirs. The stories I will be sharing still represent themes that feel very universal. For awhile, I was a bit addicted to self-improvement. Always striving to be my "best-self." The pillars themselves are simple, but they don’t always feel easy. Here is where you use self-reflection to figure out where you’re getting stuck. What is causing you to feel lost or confused? I find that if you’re feeling stuck, one or all of these 3 things needs to be addressed: Direction, knowing which way you want to move in next Confidence to take action Resilience to recover from obstacles quickly and continue moving forward We start by discovering your unique skills, abilities, and talents and how they’ve come forward in your life. Your sense of direction comes from your internal compass. What are your natural gifts? What are your core values? What are your non-negotiables? Every decision you make should be from the foundation of those values. That makes it easier to know if it’s a yes or no for you. Next is pinpointing what beliefs, patterns, or habits are getting in the way of moving in the direction you want to go. Now it’s time to do some reflection, so you’ll need a notebook. My purpose formula is your unique talents, gifts and strengths, plus the experiences and education you’ve lived. Those equal your unique impact. The first step is to create awareness of what you’ve learned from your life experiences, the skills you’ve developed, and your limiting beliefs that are holding you back from using these gifts to create a fulfilling life. The second pillar of building new foundations is to take stock of what you’ve learned and figure out what needs to change in your life, then take action on it. Third, maintenance tools are necessary to stick with the new foundation of habits and patterns that are truly in line with the impact you want to make. From a very young age, we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up. The problem with this question is it’s based around what we want to do, not who we want to be. Purpose is not an occupation. Jobs are external and often temporary. When a certain career path isn’t an option anymore, we can feel empty. Next time you find yourself making comparisons between yourself and someone you admire, I encourage you to do some research into what they’ve been through to get to where they are. You may be on Chapter 2 of your path, but they may be on Chapter 10. There really isn’t a comparison. I thought I knew what I wanted to do “when I grew up,” but as I got farther into schooling for clinical psychology I realized that I would burn out quickly. I tried some other paths, only to have the rug pulled out from under me again and again, until I finally settled into the things I really loved doing and created my own work around that.
