What we’re playing
Amanda– I just finished playing an initial look at Payday 3. Had some issues with the connection on day one – gave up after 3-4 attempts but the login was easy a few days later after launch. And, of course, I’m playing #BG3.
Stacy – I’m also playing Baldur’s Gate 3.

SPOILERS IN THIS EPISODE
For even people who have never played D&D, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a fun, immersive experience where every choice feels impactful. It’s a full experience, only $60, not $70, and free from DLC and other predatory microtransactions. And it’s fully-voice acted with fleshed-out encounters in the thousands. It doesn’t hold your hand. It gives you the freedom to try and fail. But there is some objection to this. We discuss in today’s main topic.

Games we’re playing
Amanda – I’m playing Diablo 4 still and the grind is starting to kick in. I’ve done all the season progress I can so far without being level 70+, so I’m grinding exp on glyphs – long ting. The mid-end game isn’t that fun outside of playing couch co-op.
Stacy– I’m playing Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s the best RPG I’ve played. It’s so hard in the best way. Every encounter could be your last. Or the most rewarding thing you’ve done. I cast a grease spell yesterday and accidentally cast it close to a brazier, it ignited the entire grease-covered space and helped AOE the mobs down. Completely unintentional. But for the developers, it was in the plan! The environment is such a part of the game you literally can’t play the same playthrough twice.

What we’re playing
Amanda – I’m all on that Diablo 4 train baby! Toot toot! I’m nearly level 60 on my necro and doing Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide, and The Whispering Tree.
Stacey – I’ve been playing It Takes Two with my daughter and it was a fun experience. Even at 5, she picked it up fast— a great 2-player experience. But I’ve relapsed into the World of Warcraft train – it’s the best Blizzard title, there I said it.

In this episode of the Retro Rebel podcast, we catch up on what we’ve been playing the first few months of 2023 and the state of gaming.
Zelda sells 10 m copies in 3 days
Hogwarts trans backlash
Metaverse is dead
Overwatch 2 PvE progression canceled
Diablo 4 server slam – graphics struggle on xbox one
Mario movie redemption
D&D movie redemption
What we’re playing
Amanda – I’ve been playing a lot of bits and pieces for Rogue Rebel over the last few months but just today I played Citizen Sleeper – It’s a text-based RPG/Survival Sim where you’re a robot trying to salvage scrap and live your life on a hunk of metal in the stars.
Stacey – I played Hogwarts & finished it. One thing I found was that it had enjoyable side quests – like they were just as good as the main quests. It was really well done for a game from a studio without much pedigree. I also enjoyed Jedi: Survivor – it improved a lot from the previous entries in the franchise. It does crash a lot, unfortunately, at least 10 times in 23 or so hours. Zelda is also on deck.

Accessibility in Gaming Gift Guide Podcast Episode
I’m joined in the discussion today by disabled game advocate Holly to discuss accessibility in gaming and what game companies are doing right and what they can do better to accommodate all kinds of gamers.
Holly is a disabled enby who has spent the majority of their life playing games. Growing up in hospital due to childhood cancer, classic console gaming brought escape and joy to a hard situation. Always a Sega lover at heart, as shown by their classic console collection, the jewel of which is the Dreamcast they bought with their first-ever paycheck. Still a console gamer (PS4), they are a lover of J-RPG’s and obsessed with Kojima’s games, especially the Metal Gear saga to the point of getting a Foxhound tattoo. For Holly, Ludens is their life. Holly’s socials are Twitter: @HollyDspoonieme and PSN: Tiny_Caska.

What we’re playing
Amanda– I’m just playing 6 Nimmit still which is a fun German sequential card game that I’ve taken quite a liking to in recent weeks. I play it for hours in the evening when the show I’m watching is too boring lol. I recommend playing it on Tactics and Professional for the most challenging experience. Tactics reduce the card number based on how many players there are and professional means cards can be placed in the front and in the back of the rows.
Holly – I’ve not long returned from the last event this year of Empire LRP. Profound Decisions have made a family-friendly, highly immersive, and interactive LARP.
There are 10 Nations to choose from, each with its own style and culture. You can fully curate your own character, with options of what class to be (or multi-class), what resources you receive & if you choose to take the field – what Heroic abilities you want to wield.
My character Neala is a member of the Navarr nation, who is a priest/medic so I get involved in the political side of the game. I also work in the field hospital to heal our fighters once they return from battle through the Sentinel Gate. There are so many ways to play, with each class/nation bringing its own unique challenges and opportunities each season.
Strength to the Empire, Strength to Navarr!

Amanda– I just played Blood on the Clocktower online and it’s an interesting social deduction game that has the benefit of no one getting kicked out early, so everyone is always playing (even from the grave).

Tom, our guest host this week, is a seasoned publican who grew up playing classic arcade games in Redcar Beach and Middlesbrough town center. He’s a lifelong fan of platformers, shooters, and fighting games as a result of these formative years.

What We’re Playing
Amanda– Recently started playing As Dusk Falls. Now, I’m sure this is a good game. It’s got so many weaving choices at the end of the chapter, it’s gotta be. But it didn’t grab me. I didn’t care enough about the characters to keep playing past the first chapter.
Holly – I’m playing: Klonoa phantasy reverie series on Nintendo Switch.
I played Klonoa as a child when it was first released on PS1 and I fell in love with it, in fact, my entire family did. The story is so lovely, Klonoa is a sweet little cat boy with winged ears who ends up stumbling into a mission to save the world of Phantomile from an evil spirit who wants to turn the whole world into a nightmare. With its groundbreaking 2.5 D side-scrolling environment, this game translates perfectly to the Nintendo switch.
It was a true blessing to be able to play it again with updated graphics and a new fun two-player interface. To my mind, the game has truly stood the test of time.

What we’re playing
Amanda – I’m playing living forest right now. It’s a board game where you’re trying to collect resources and thwart the other players with a deck management style element.
Stacy- I’m back on the sauce…WoW, I just can’t stay mad at you! And I can’t wait to play As Dusk Falls which comes out today.
Gaming news
New no man’s sky update- the latest update is very star trek allowing you to command a fleet and explore new scenarios. The game has been improved drastically since its initial release.
PS Plus getting 50 Ubisoft games – the new Ubisoft titles will be added to the 27 already available on the system as part of the Classics collection in late 2022.
How to stay safe with free-to-play gaming
Free-to-play is a common format these days but these games are designed to tempt you into parting with your cash. And while that’s not a problem if you’re doing it willingly, sometimes the costs can sneak up on you.
Amanda
Don’t save your card details within the game or system
Set a limit you’re comfortable with
Track your spending with alerts
Remember if you see a lot of other players with cosmetic paid items that is a function of game design that’s supposed to encourage you to buy
In a few months, you’re never going to play it again so measure your purchases against that
Stacy
There’s nothing really free about free to play and that you’re going to experience various levels of racketeering to get money from you
Educate yourself so it makes being disciplined easier
Look for the alternatives – if you can pay upfront that’s probably better in the long run
Give yourself a safety timeframe – don’t spend any money for a set amount of time to see how much you actually enjoy the base game
Beware of ads too, they are just trying to get your money elsewhereSat, 30 Jul 2022 - 38min - 154 - 25 Best Action Games of All Time

What we’re playing
Amanda– I’m playing Stardew Valley and I get why people like it. It’s fairly easy to pick up and the day and night phases see you rushing about to do the little tasks. I do wish the notifications were a bit better for the Xbox One and navigating the menus was easier. But, perhaps this is a game that’s just better on PC or a handheld…
Mark – At the moment, I am playing a lot of Wizard Chess(!) with my son and Connect 4 with my daughter. When I do get a moment for myself it’s Horizon Forbidden West.
Main topic – 25 Best Action Games of All Time (according to Popular Mechanics – yes, really!)
The science mag of your dad and your dad’s dad tries to be hip with their rankings of genre-defining games, but do you agree with their list? They’ve presented them in alphabetical order, but what’s missing? Today, I’m joined by avid action game fan, Mark to discuss what’s right and wrong on this list.

Amanda– I just finished playing Firewatch and joined a book club discussion about it recently. It’s an atmospheric pseudo-walking sim with a very compelling intro.
Tom- I’m still trying to complete the Witcher and it’s been going on for about a year. What keeps drawing me back is that little progress marker and the fact that I like completing tasks in person haha. I’ve just finished Blood and Wine with a good ending.

What we’re playing
Amanda– I just played Horrified on the weekend. It’s a cooperative game where players try to save themselves and townspeople from retro monsters like the Swamp Thing, The Invisible Man, Dracula, and more. It was fun, only took around an hour to play and really challenging when you add more monsters in.
Holly– I’ve been playing Can’t Stop on BGA. It’s a push your luck dice rolling game for around 4 people where you’re making a mountain climb. If you can block off 3 paths to the top of the mountain, you win.

Amanda – I didn’t know how much is actually out there until I started researching this topic. Thanks to LauraKBuzz on YouTube, Microsoft and Make It Missoula for the crash course. Some features I learned about and agree should be a standard:
Subtitles with non-verbal info, speaker denotation, and music lyrics
Settings/development with colourblind spectrums included
Fonts that are dyslexia-friendly
Support for custom button mapping
Support for text-to-speech communication & vice versa for multiplayer
Support for adaptive controllers

Amanda– I’m still just playing Marakesh on Board Game Arena. I get so absorbed in this little game. It’s simple, intuitive and with the ability to move the figurine after your turn it becomes a lot more cutthroat.
Steve- Recently I’ve been playing Dread Hunger, a social “whodunit” game where you take a role on a ship and embark on an expedition to the antarctic where two of your crewmates are there to sabotage the voyage.
Main topic – 30 Best Platformer Games of All Time
Again, as one of Google’s top results for the best platformers of all time (according to VideoGamer), we’ve got to cover it, but we’ve already found some flaws with the way these lists are created. Based on this one website’s review scores, it’s really limited in scope. We discuss their top picks:

What we’re playing
Since the era of Lords of Midnight and Joust, Mark has spent most of his waking time pretending to be someone else. From destroying demons with a chainsaw to being the 7th Guest, Mark plays a wide genre of games but his favourite is undoubtedly RPGs. When not gaming, Mark loves to read both science fiction and fantasy and regularly extols his, not quite so humble, opinion on a range of book and games clubs. In the real world, Mark… well, who cares about the real world anyway?
Amanda– I’m playing Marakesh on Board Game Arena. Holly, who recently Guest Hosted for this podcast, showed me how to play it and now I’m obsessed. You’re a rug salesman in the market and you’re trying to put your rugs on display and hide your competitor’s rug. It’s fun and full of hijinks.
Mark – At the moment I’m playing Horizon Forbidden West, which is the sequel to the excellent Horizon Zero Dawn. As a completionist, the game is perfect as it is open-world enough to reward exploration without being endless. I’ve also recently introduced my family to Sushi-Go after I got fed up of losing at Snakes & Ladders (a mere 25 times in a row over lockdown). Of course, I am now losing at Sushi-Go as well!.

What we’re playing
Amanda– I just beat Firewatch on Xbox One and it’s a bizarre little game. I found the navigation a bit clunky as you need to get a map and compass out many times to get around which youngsters might be baffled by. Plus, no spoilers but the very beginning is a better story than the rest of the game in my opinion. I wanted to play a game about the backstory. You can beat the whole thing in a few hours and it’s worth a play, but I did feel let down by the ‘big reveal’.
Main topic – 30 Best MMORPGs of All Time (according to Ranker)

What We’re Playing
Amanda: I’m Lost Cities on Board Game Arena. It’s a really fun and easy-to-learn sequential card game for two players where you’re competing to score the most points by playing down cards one after the other on your respective sides of the board. I’ve won more times than I’ve lost so maybe this is the game for me.
Holly: I recently treated myself to the Iki island expansion of Ghost of Tsushima. It’s a lot more difficult than Ghost so it forced me to change my style of gameplay which is wonderful but also frustrating. It’s brilliant. Plus Iki island has animal sanctuaries where you use the 6-axis controller to play a soothing flute song to tame the animals in the area. It has wild cats so I love it and have a million photo mode pics of Jin petting a cat.
About Holly:

Amanda: I’m playing Stella – Dixit Universe on Board Game Arena. It’s a card similarity guessing game and the artwork is really beautiful.
Tom: I’ve been playing Doom Eternal and Doom 64. There’s just something so relaxing about classic shooters, even on the challenging levels. But Doom Eternal lulls you into a false sense of security. Doom 64 is so hard now! Maybe I was just better at it when I was younger…
Tom, our guest host this week, is a seasoned publican who grew up playing classic arcade games in Redcar Beach and Middlesbrough town center. He’s a lifelong fan of platformers, shooters, and fighting games as a result of these formative years.

What we’re playing
Amanda– I’m playing Bang online via Board Game Arena right now and I’m obsessed. It’s a western-themed game where everyone has unique roles. You’re either a Sherriff, Deputy, Outlaw or Renegade. Depending on what role you are is who you’re trying to shoot to win the game. It’s very fun and I even managed a win as the Renegade once which is very hard because you need to kill every other player to win.
Tom – Recently, I’ve been playing a mix of games. I wanna completionist the Witcher 3, right now I’m only on 47%. Roach is a menace though. I had to stop playing Diablo 3 because of the servers, so this is my new completionist goals.

Main topic: What modern games can learn from old games
This week we are discussing the difference between retro and modern games and what newer games could learn from the older ones. Retro games have a rich and storied history. And even modern Castlevania, platformer and similar homages to gamings golden era can do things right. Today, we’re exploring what things current-gen games should learn from the past to keep gaming fun.

What we’re playing
Amanda- I’ve deleted Best Fiends before it got me haha. I feel like that’s 1 small step for anti-microtransactions. But as a result, all I’ve played this week is tabletop with Werewolf and D&D.
Gaming news
Cyberpunk 2077 is now on next-gen and celebrated it with a patch for older consoles and a free trial play on Ps5 and Xbox Series X/S. Since it’s theworst game ending I’ve dealt with in a while, I couldn’t give a toss.
Forget owning classic Nintendo games as Wii U and 3DS stores shut and Switch Online to be the only delivery method.
There’s a new job posting from Blizzard this week for an established IP and punters think it’s a new WoW expansion.
Early reviews of the Valve steam deck are proving popular and this handheld might represent the best value for money for portable PC Gaming.

What we’re playing
Amanda- I’m playing Last Stop. It’s set in London and is fairly accurate to what it’s like here. The characters are compelling and thought out. The only thing that lets this title down is the graphics and controls which are more suited to a PS2. Available on game pass.
Gaming news
Fallout getting the TV treatment- Amazon is producing a TV show based on the fallout games for its amazon prime platform and its shooting now.
New blizzard IP – according to the Metro, “The first new Blizzard IP in six years has been announced and it’s a survival game with modern-day humans in a fantasy world.” It looks like it might have some mechanics in common with monster hunter world.
Microsoft buys blizzard- not long after the new IP announcement, Microsoft bought up their parent company, making it one of the largest game companies in the world with huge titles like COD and Diablo in the stables.
Main topic- New Year, Nix NFTS

What we’re playing
Amanda tells us “I’ve spent all my time recently on Board Game Arena playing 6 Nimmit and King of Toyko – plus my regular DND. I did try out Darksiders 3 which I like the mood and theme of – I’m just not good at jumping puzzles lol. I also did 2 rounds of Gang Beasts which is a Fall Guys style brawler but it was not for me. I don’t really like goofy physics.”
Gaming news
NFT’s come to gaming
PC Gamer reports, “The language around this thing is tailor-made to raise your hackles: “Be Unique. Control. Play. The Beta of Ubisoft Quartz, the first playable NFTs designed by the Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab, is coming to Ghost Recon Breakpoint!” I suppose it’s technically true that numbering items makes them unique, but this does seem like a rather weak pitch: ‘limited edition’ cosmetics.” They then took the announcement off youtube after it got 95% dislikes.
PC Gamer also reports, that League of Legends, PUBG, Clash of Clans, and Destiny 2 all with down yesterday. Plus, “Platforms like UPlay and the Epic Games Store are down, while mega-publishers like Bethesda are also affected. What we’re playing
Amanda- I’ve been playing The Walking Dead (Final Season) and streaming it immersively on Twitch.tv/darqueace — it is a bit harder than previous games because of the option to stun or kill walkers; this has a direct impact on if you’ll get swarmed and you need to mix these things up but sometimes in a panic, it’s hard to do so.

Dumb things we do because of video game mechanics
If you were really a big, buff hero – you probably wouldn’t do some of the things that we’ve all become accustomed to (bunny hop running anyone) just because of how game mechanics and targeting systems work in games. So, today we’re going to talk about all the dumb habits we have because of mechanics that would be silly in real life.

What we’ve been playing
Amanda- I’ve downloaded a ton of games that I’m going to try out. They are all from Game Pass and include The Ascent a dungeon crawler from the look of it, Back4Blood from Left4Dead creators, Dark Alliance by DnD, Genesis Noir (which looks like a bit of you Stacy), Immortal Realms a vampire thing, Onno a cute puzzler, Outriders which I think is an RPG, planet coaster because why not, Prey because I remember the hype around this game when I was in college, Torchlight 3… I don’t remember what kind of game it was but I liked the box art and Tropico 6 which I’m booting up now. Tropico 6 is a fun, tongue-in-cheek city/government SIM with missions and objectives for specific scenarios. Fun, but gets a bit samey after a while. I then played Children of Morta, a fun but VERY HARD dungeon crawler with couch co-op options. Watch me exploit the level design to crack out a boss kill here.
Stacy-Flight simulator is hard. It’s really hard. Or I’m really not good at it. But the Ascent is a lot of fun and worth the Game Pass price tag if you’re in the market for a cool cyberpunk/top-down RPG.

Best Video Game Villains
This week, we’re talking about the baddies we loved to beat. Why were they so compelling? Why did it feel so good to squish them like a bug? Big or small, we’re talking video game villains.
Amanda- I’m thinking the Flood from Halo, the reapers from mass effect, handsome jack from Borderlands, Atlas from Bioshock, Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 (depending on how you play).
Stacy- Bowser is a timeless villain I love to hate. The Illusive Man was the bigger A-hole on Mass Effect to me. And maybe a few surprises!
What we’re playing
Amanda- I’ve been busy. So far I’ve played Darkest Dungeon (hard) Grounded (nostalgic), Grim Fandango (clunky), Call of the Sea (novel), Man-Eater (stressful), and Octopath Traveler (samey).
Stacy – Finished “Tell Me Why”, my type of game, don’t think Amanda would like it. Decent story, I dug it. “The Messenger” is 8-bit fantastic nostalgia, it’s great. 2D platformer, like old school ninja garden. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is fascinating. It grabbed me from the beginning…(Amanda does not like it). 3rd person, action fantasy, set in the Viking age, delves into psychosis and its real-life effects on the mind. It’s what I’m playing now. And if that wasn’t enough, I also started Monster Hunter.
Stacy’s thoughts on his new Xbox Series S – Xbox is the clear gaming console winner in terms of UI and ease of experience. Too easy to get your games, download digital titles, and play. Playstation is sleek, the UI looks sharp, but not nearly as useful IMO.

What we’re playing
Amanda – I tried the demo of little nightmares 2 on the Xbox game pass. It’s got great music and a really amazing ethereal feel with no dialogue that I’ve come across so far. But as a mix of horror and platformer, I’ll probably not finish it, to be honest even though it’s amazing.
Stacy- I’m the worst, and I’ve played very little lately. I’ve watched a TON of let’s plays with my favourite Scary Game Squad as they play through Resident Evil 8: Village. Living vicariously through gamers who don’t mind traipsing through mansions filled with haunted dolls, giant vampire-ladies, and horseback-riding/ax-brandishing lycans.

What we’re playing
Amanda – you’ll never believe it but I’ve actually been playing Octopath Traveller. This is such a Stacy game, lol. But I really like it. I think it’s the music? It’s very relaxing. I just sort of space out. I don’t even look at the stories, I skip them all. So bizarre. Obviously, I’m still playing pokemon and they had a fun spring event over the weekend that had some unique character art for the event which was cool.

Amanda – Obviously, it’s Pokemon. It’s gonna be like that for a while too. I’ve done a month now of 30k-50k per week and I’m feeling good about it. There are new pokemon released regularly during events, so I’m still catching things regularly. And I recently got a gotcha which auto-catches them when I’m out on walks where I can’t really look at my phone. Is it cheating? What we’re playing
Amanda- I played a lot over the last few weeks because I got the vids. So I went through my game catalogue to do a clear out. I played Control, which was too weird for me and beat about half of Thronebreaker a Witcher spinoff game (the I got glitched behind 2 NPCS and gave up) and I also beat Cyberpunk 2077. We will talk about it more later, but let me say… I hated the end so much I requested a refund. I have never done that before.

Cyberpunk to get standalone multiplayer mode – It’s expected two of the new modes will be heist and deathmatch. The first is suspected to be a PvE coop encounter and the second PvP.
Super rare shiny pokemon found – A Reddit user found a super rare Oranguru which was level 65 and best on all stats. “Reddit user Scorbunny posted a photo of her Shiny Oranguru, having worked out the odds at one in 96100,” according to the NME article.

On the podcast we have discussed in detail why these are the games we are looking forward to in 2021.
Amanda
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 – I played the LARP back in college, so I’m keen to try out the game.
Far Cry 6 – I’m not a huge fan of the Far Cry games ( they can be a bit same-y) but I’m interested in seeing what Giancarlo Esposito does with the title role.
Halo: Infinite – I’ve played every halo (I think) and don’t plan on stopping at this one.
Skull and Bones – I’ll try it if only to see if it’s better for me than the dreaded Sea of Thi...Fri, 15 Jan 2021 - 1h 01min - 126 - Retro Rebel Podcast – Ep 127 Best games we played in 2020

What we’re playing
Amanda- I’ve played a lot this week mainly due to a power brick scare that has me really appreciating my Xbox. I’ve gotten all the Sims 4 career achievements (triplets is still evading me) and I’ve started Fallen Order. Tbh, I don’t think I like it. I dunno what I was expecting, maybe something more RPG? But the main actor is the redheaded kid from Shameless who I hate anyway and the obstacle course map design just isn’t something I like. I’ve done the first 3 planets (as much as I can at this stage) but I might leave it at that. Glad I didn’t pay full price. Fallen Order is still currently free with Xbox Game Pass.
News:
EA has bought British dev studio Codemasters for 1.2 billion dollars. This is a surprising turn as most thought they would buy Take-Two.
Most people unable to purchase an Xbox Series X or PS5 as stocks still out all over the USA and UK. eBay scalpers charging 50%-200% markups on consoles in the reseller market.

What we’re playing
Amanda – I’m a bit disappointed this week. I wanted to stream Doom Eternal, but have just not had the bandwidth to get to it. Aside from a few PUG Among Us games, I’ve played jack all. Part of me is just holding out for SIMS 4 on Game Pass so I can finish my free completionist run, lol. It’s all I am excited about.
Stacy– I’m just sad Cyberpunk is delayed…so it’s more World of Warcraft!
Gaming news
PSA – DON’T BLOW VAPE SMOKE INTO YOUR XBOX. Xbox said on social this week that they’re surprised they need to instruct people not to damage their hardware with vape smoke, but now they’ve said it best not do it.
We can't believe we have to say this, but please do not blow vape smoke into your Xbox Series X.
— Xbox (@Xbox) November 11, 2020
Xbox down to talk Game Pass on PS5 – Proving that Microsoft is all about claiming market share. Phil Spencer didn’t tut the idea ofbringing Game Pass to other consoles. I think that’s a good idea to be honest – Game Pass is an amazing service and it’s a shame that other players have a less positive experience with their digital catalogue services.
Cyberpunk 2077 delayed (again) – It’s not new news of course. All the memes are out in force dragging CJ Project RED for delaying the game release until December, after already instituting crunch (ethically) and delaying once before. I do want it to be right, but I’m starting to be concerned it will do a Halo and push to next year.
Main Topic – Thanksgiving Series pt 1: Consoles & Developers we’re thankful for.
Consoles:
Amanda – Well, let me start chronologically. I’d have to say thanks to the Nintendo (NES) for my first gaming memories with Mario and Duck Hunt. It actually brought the family together in the front room at my grandma’s house and I’ll never forget it. Next, I’d say the SNES for Super Star Wars Return of the Jedi – for Leia’s bootylicious jump animation alone. Following that, the OG Xbox for fun halo parties with multiple TVs in high school and tow...Fri, 20 Nov 2020 - 1h 06min - 124 - Why gaming controls get more complex as titles release sequels?

Amanda – It’s more among us for me. We actually had a twitch game last week with a bunch of the other ToG contributors and editors. Today we’re talking about why games have gone from 4D pads and 2 buttons to 360 movement sets and multi-button combos with QTE’s? Is it because the player base is more experienced? Or are devs just trying to make use of the tech available to keep the game fresh. The Rebel’s discuss.

What we’re playing
Amanda- I got challenged to a duel in Mortal Kombat X by one of our Instagram followers- one I am very likely to lose for sure haha. When it goes down I’ll try to capture it on Twitch for ya’ll. But this week I played Among Us on mobile, the game everyone is talking about. And to be honest, I found it a bit awkward to control. Keep in mind, I don’t have a mobile controller so maybe that’s it. While it’s fun, I couldn’t deal with more than 2 or 3 games at a time.
Gaming news
Parents accidentally buy the wrong X-Box gen- we knew naming conventions were gonna be an issue but it’s worse than we could have thought. Thousands of people mistakenly ordered X-Box One X consoles instead of Xbox Series X preorders in a farcical comedy of errors.
Xbox game pass mobile streaming is live- however, our own test shows it might not be everything it’s cracked up to be. Since your streaming, you’re likely to be using mobile data at a rate of approximately 2gb per hour and you need a compatible controller to even play anything.

WHAT WE ARE PLAYING
Amanda- I had a do at Mortal Kombat X this week on Twitch. Maybe I shouldn’t have started with the story mode? The learning curve felt like it went from 0 to 100 in the first 3 matches. The cut scenes were pretty cool, if only for the nostalgia factor but I can’t say I enjoyed the actual combat much. Maybe there should have been a tutorial? I mean, I had no idea how to use environment objects or whatnot. I felt behind the curve the whole time…
GAMING NEWS
Xbox Series X & S- the x will be 499$ and s at 299$; but after having a close look at the specs, I would recommend going for the full-stack x model. That’s because the s is only 4k upscale and the x is native 4k/8k. That’s going to give you a better picture and experience overall. Spend a bit more to truly harness next-gen.
Xbox game pass gets better- yesterday (Sept 15) Game Pass Ultimate users got access to stream hundreds of games from the cloud on Android. Plus, some EA pass games will come to game pass in November, so I’m pretty excited to resume my SIMS addiction haha.
God’s & Monster’s name changed- in a move that should have surprised no one, Ubisoft had to change the name of God’s and monster’s after Monster Energy Drink took issue with it. How you could get the two confused, I don’t know, but that’s how trademarks work I guess.
MAIN TOPIC – The death of physical games media
Amanda- Physical game copies have been dead for me for years now. I don’t own a single physical copy anymore. There are loads of reasons for this including limited space, low influence by day 1 order culture, and the habit of renting games for the last decade that’s only been made easier by game pass. Now that game pass is becoming a dominant service, I think more people will be making the switch. This will reduce the number of physical copies in the marketplace, driving up the cost of used games, making them less desirable overall. Plus the new 100% digital Xbox Series S and PS5 consoles will further encourage digital consumption. Is that a bad thing? I’ve never thought so, but that was from the comfort of a competitive marketplace. Once 2nd hand sales are eliminated, it may open the door to increase the cost of games beyond the already higher $70 price point.

What we’re playing
Amanda – I tried out The Long Dark and Wolfenstein: Youngblood live on my twitch stream this week. The Long Dark was a bleak and atmospheric survival game that SOME people might like but I found tedious as I spent endless minutes just trying to get my cold meter to inch up. If you have the patience of the saint and like an illustrated art style, it might be for you. Youngblood was more my speed. A smack-em-up shooter with quick action and full of quips, it was fun to see the Blazkowicz juniors taking after their dad so much. If you don’t want to think too much and just wanna shoot some Nazis, this is the fun and cheap choice on Game Pass for you.
Stacy- I caved and paid for Playstation Now since it was on sale for 15% off, and now that I’ve seen what Xbox and Playstation have to offer, I think Xbox has a better line-up with their Game Pass. Playstation still has some excellent offerings, and I tried my hand at a few of them. If you haven’t had a chance, Dead Cells and Hollow Knight are both available on Playstation Now. I had difficulty streaming them, but I downloaded both and they are great fun. Both side-scrolling platforming action games with surprisingly simple gameplay that quickly ups the difficulty. Playstation Now also has Control as well. With Control still commanding a $60 price tag, the cost of the service alone would make subscribing cost-effective if you were still looking to take a crack at it.
Gaming News

They’re essentially locked out of the new season, which is bound to cause outrage. They’ll also be losing cross-play too. It’s gonna kick-off.

Dropping this month (8 September 2020), you’ll have exposure to new locations and factions for $19.99. Now it just needs to come back on Game Pass so we can play it.

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda- I recently did a game pass roulette and started playing some bits on my hard drive to free up space. As a result, I played Soul Caliber 6 and Day Z. Both these games have problems if I’m honest, Soul Caliber is pretty but the load times are atrocious and Day Z is ugly and boring. Wait, are there any redeeming qualities about Day Z? No. Don’t play it. Looks like a bootleg Pubg zombie knockoff and it was dull as heck. Played for over 20 minutes and never found a weapon. Not one.
Stacy – Finally finished Ghost of Tsushima . And I started a point and click adventure game called Kathy Rain. Lots of puzzles that are very challenging but its a good entry-level game. Basically a detective game.
GAMING NEWS
The UK spends on war games- the pandemic has the UK defense ministry escalating Development with its AI contractor to deliver highly detailed UK simulations for training, planning, and forecasts. Tech like this could have helped us better react to the pandemic so the race is on to develop it quickly.
Twitch Prime is now Prime Gaming- Amazon customers now get free access to the premium service, free games, and more inclusive in their Amazon Prime membership. This is a rebrand of a previous offering, now under the more ‘Amazon-Esque’ naming convention. TBH, I’d never heard of this before now, so seems like the old name didn’t work.
Halo Infinite Xbone Cancellation rumours – The Twitterverse has been overwhelmed with speculation that the Xbox One version of Halo Infinite might be canned to give the dev team a better chance to get the tentpole release out on time. But that’s extremely unlikely. Not only is the Xbox One too important of a console to skip this release, but with Smart Delivery, fans are expecting the ability to port over all current-gen games.

Who should buy the new consoles?
Amanda – Obviously, gamers who have around $600 bucks of disposable income. Between the console and some games, that will probably be enough. If you have it, who am I to fault you? Second, people who have 4k or better TV already. Without a 4k TV, I don’t see how you’ll enjoy much in the way of improvements with a new console. Collectors. If you gotta catch em all, fine then. If you’ve had every Xbox or every PS, then why not?
Stacy – I agree completely with Amanda; no 4K TV = not really a necessity. That, and the respective launch titles of each consoles are the big selling points, and in my opinion, these two consoles are not equaled when it comes to launching titles and exclusives. Halo not available for Xbox will hurt…PS5 all the way baby!
WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda – “I downloaded the free-to-play DC Online. I remember playing the beta of this almost 20 years ago on PC. It was really hyped back then, and I got myself too excited for what is a 20-year-old game… it’s not that easy to control an MMO on a console, first off. The menus are often not designed for it and there’s way too much text. The graphics are meh. The voice acting was grating. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I didn’t really enjoy it at all after character creation. Unless you’ve got nothing else to play… I’d give it a miss.”

How to make real friendships online?
Amanda suggests you play with a mic, talk to people. Remember, you’ve just met this person, so don’t share a ton of personal information upfront. If you find someone fun, ask if they’d like to play again sometime and add them to friends. Then actually invite them to play later in the week. Approach any online friendship like you would one in real life. Go slow, get to know them. If you like hanging out with them more each day, that’s a good sign. Share bits about yourself and ask questions to learn more. Find out other games you can play together so you’re not in a single-game box. Once you feel comfortable, connect on social media. But take it slow, it’s not a race and you might find you just don’t get along with some people. That’s ok. If it’s convenient and once you’ve been friends on social for a while, maybe suggest a squad meet up – even if it’s just on Zoom or something. If you want to make real friendships, your goal is to eventually get face to face, if that’s possible.
Leave us a comment here or on our social media and tell us what you suggest for making real friendships online.
WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda – I’ve been playing Two Point Hospital. It’s a building a resource management game where you take control of a new or failing hospital and complete challenges to turn it around and achieve a 3-star rating. It’s very tongue and cheek. The PA announcer says cheeky things to let you know if something is going wrong like, “we’re sorry for the litter that YOU dropped on OUR floors” in this posh British accent. It’s quite cute. Sure, it’s basically a game for kids, but it’s so fun, I don’t care.
Stacy – I’m finding more and more that the most important thing for me in a game is whether or not I’m having fun when I play. Still playing Disco Elysium, which is a role-playing video game developed and published by ZA/UM. Going towards about 60 hours of gameplay. Currently dealing with guys who light their swords on fire. It’s a complex and challenging game. But you can also make it easier if you need it and it is a must-play.

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda – I’ve actually played a new game this week, woo! I downloaded Fallout 76 for Xbox Game Pass and you know what…it’s not half bad. It’s got the typical fallout bugs, but when you love the franchise as much as I do…I’m just happy to be back in the world TBH. Pick it up if you have Game Pass, I say. Why not?
Stacy – Playing Last of Us 2 still, onto Seattle Day 3 and have had some twists up to this point, but nothing that has changed my opinion on the game at all so far; it’s in my top game of the year list as of now and there’s nothing else close. However, I have not completed it yet and will have done so by the next episode! Promise!
GAMING NEWS
Another Amazon Game Delayed – First, they put Crucible back into closed beta, now New World is being pushed waaaaaaay back. It was due to release August 2020 (so just a couple weeks) but now it’s going to be spring 2021. That’s a shame for those who have already preordered.
Most Expensive Video Game Ever – Would you pay $114k for a game? What about for a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros? Well someone did. There wasn’t just one bidder either. Over 29 people bid on the game in Dallas, Texas to give it this eye-watering total.
UK & USA’s Most Fav Game During Lockdown – It’s so embarrassing. I don’t even want to say it. At least France has a proper shooter. Nope, our most popular game is Roblox. Yep. That game. Maybe the parents are letting it babysit their kids? I’m at a loss for words. We’re all a buncha casuals now.
Quickfire Game Tactics PT2
Last week we did Part 1 of Quickfire Game Tactics, so go back and listen to that if you haven’t. We covered action games, action-adventure games, and RPGs in that episode. WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda – I’m an actual disgrace. I’ve not played anything. It’s actually been a busy working week for me and I’ve not made the time. I’m playing Warzone tonight, does that count? I’m sorry 🙁 I’ll try to do better next week.
Stacy – Still playing The Last of Us 2, and I’m finally almost just about half-way done. It’s a top 10 game of all-time list for me, so far, and I’ve done my best not to ruin it. The goal is to be able to have an opinion on it next week, so stay tuned for that!
Gaming News
Lootbox Addiction – Despite news last week that loot boxes are purchased by a very small proportion of gaming adults, they can still be devastating financially. A UK teenager spent £3,000 of his college savings on buying loot boxes in Fifa. It’s good the house of lords is looking into this.
Free Xbox Series X or PS5? It might be possible with rumored £500 per adult and £250 per child as part of UK economic stimulus packages. Since the money is supposed to encourage spending, it’s not a terrible idea to spend it on the new consoles, really. Would you spend your stimulus on that?

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda – I’m playing Halo 5 this week. To be honest, I was doing the first mission thinking who are these people. It’s not Master Chief you’re playing as and I was a bit irritated. Who plays Halo NOT to play MC. But thankfully the second mission, he’s there and I’m glad for it. I haven’t gotten beyond that point but I was relieved. Not gonna lie.
Stacy – Playing the Last of Us 2 and determined to finish it!
Gaming News This Week
Ofcom – 6% of UK kids and 4% of UK adults have bought loot boxes. That’s thankfully lower than anyone else suspected. However, the figures for overall in-game content purchase make much more sense with 31% of adults buying in free games and 25% in premium games plus 47% of kids guying in free games and 33% in premium games. That shows that this product directly appeals to children overall.
Amazon pulls Crucible off the market – Crucible is now back in closed beta after poor reviews. They’ve committed to making the game better but this is not a good sign for the new game dev who has other projects in the works.
Streamer ‘Reckful’ Dies, Aged 31- Cause of death is still unknown but the WoW and Twitch legend has passed away. Social media has lit up with tributes to the late streamer and Champion. He was working on his own video game, Everland.
Boss Tactic Tropes
Bosses in a video game just have some key things they all seem to like to do, don’t they? Today we talk about some that we just always seem to come across or what has been seared in our memory.
* When the floor goes lava or fire patches appear like with Deaths Head in Wolfenstein’s new order.
* When you have to attack body parts like the Deathwing tentacles in WoW
When there are cycles of aoes you have to avoid like nearly every ESO dungeon boss
When they are regenning to full health like werewolves in the Witcher
When they move the whole battle’s location like Diablo in Diablo 3 and the shadow realm

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Amanda- More CoD Warzone this week for me. I’ve been playing warzone rumble which is a fun 25 v 25 sort of combat mode which is a sniper paradise. There’s a new BR Quads which has people shook as you cant tell when you down or team kills so it’s hard to know when to push. Is it more realistic? Sure, but at the expense of notifications which are helpful for the average player IMO.
Stacy-Well, I tried my hand at Magic: The Gathering Arena (MTG: Arena) and I loved it! Now, if the servers can catch up to the gameplay and stop dropping connections…
I also played a little of a game you might have heard of, The Last of Us 2! Beautiful, violent, dark, depressing…kind of everything I was expecting and more. It’s awesome and I’m having a blast.
GAMING NEWS
Pokemon Unite – A new MOBA style Pokemon game is coming to the switch and mobile allowing cross-platform play and the choice of a handful of fav favorite pokemon to play with.
Gaming time per lifetime – A new study shows gamers spend on average 3 years of their lives playing games and over £16k pursuing their hobby.
Apex Legends coming to mobile – the popular console and PC battle royale is coming to mobile this year. This is good news for cross-platform players with news of a port to Switch already announced.
Last of Us coming to HBO- Director Johan Renck of Breaking Bad and Chernobyl fame has been signed on for the pilot.
REVIEW BOMBING, PETITIONS & THE LAST OF US 2
Amanda – I think petitions work. I think review bombing works. But I don’t think the end result is what the actors want… they want change or to express their dissatisfaction, but all I think these actions usually accomplish is convincing studios to NOT FUND ambitious projects. To be more risk-averse. To not make statements of any kind. The controversy is bad for stakeholders.
Stacy-I agree; petitions and review bombs work, just not necessarily in the intended way. Review bombing can be useful and is a way to express political or moral stances towards a company whose business practices you disagree. Review bombing can also be used as a means to bully game designers online.

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Stacy: Orwell- (2016) you just got hired by the Orwell firm to basically do surveillance on the people. As the player, you use all the cameras in the city to piece together clues and solve crimes. But are you helping people, and one of the good guys? Or are you part of the surveillance state and actually Big Brother? I’ve enjoyed it, you should give it a try.
Unheard- (2019) You work for a police station, and your job is to listen to police recordings and again, solve crimes! There is a theme here….. You are free to move the character around the map and listen in on the recording. The characters you listen to move from room to room, and you can follow them and hear what they say in other rooms to help solve the crime. Match voices to names and find out whodunnit! Another fun indie game from last year!
Amanda: It’s more Call of Duty: Warzone for me this week. I’ve had a good mix of successes and epic fails in the Battle Royale. All I can say is watch out for telephone poles when you’re trying to avoid getting shot on a quad lol. The new season has dropped now and the massive update took a full day for me to download from 11 am to 6 pm, it’s chunky. I recommend you set this bad boy to install overnight if you haven’t already.

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Stacy – I logged into games, to say I played them, it’s not cheating don’t judge me! I played a bit of Life is Strange. The music is great, the story is great…I forgot how much I enjoyed this game. I’m at the part with the diner right now, where you’re supposed to arrange events to happen so you can get a gun or something? I’ve not finished it. I also played a little FF4, one of my two favorite games in the whole franchise. I’ve put like 5 hours in, so I’m still close to the beginning, no espers.
Amanda – Call of Duty: Warzone is doing the most, really. There are some bits I’m not too fond of like the Gulag (when you’re out, you should be out), but things I really enjoy like the contracts. I’ve been riskier and enjoying the format more than Fortnite in a lot of ways. It’s free and you can cross-platform party and chat so why not!
GAMING NEWS
Xbox Series X- the new console will upscale many backward compatible games, it’s been said. With some games going up to 120 FPS on the Series X, according to reports by The Verge.
Free on Epic Store: Borderlands, the Handsome Collection is free this week on the Epic games store. That’s good news for fans of the game…hopefully they can keep the servers online though.
HP Reverb- HP is taking a crack at VR and it’s sort of flying under the radar. Preorders are on now for their oculus rift looking kit for $599. Seems steep for an unproven VR player, however.
PlayStation 5 – Is not focusing on backward compatibility for the PS5, they are putting all their gaming into the new releases basket. With a press conference scheduled for this week, hopefully, we’ll see more things about the PS5 that make it worth a heavy pricetag.
Last of Us 2 – They say it’s bigger than any other game they’ve made, but you can tell it’s going to be a continuation of the story with Ellie, but she seems more active. With a jump button and more evade tactics, it’s a different component that we’ve not really seen before.
OUR MOST PLAYED GAMES
Amanda
When I was younger, MMORPGs dominated my life in a big way and for years. Sadly those games are either shut down or the account is no longer valid, so there’s no way for me to accurately report time data. Suffice to say, over a decade-plus of heavy MMO gaming, we’re likely looking at two to three months of solid playtime.
But for this list, I’m gonna focus on what I can accurately measure from Xbox One’s stat system. Unfortunately, that’s gonna restrict it to Xbox One releases with that feature enabled but it’s as accurate as I can be. So, in order from smallest to largest,Sat, 06 Jun 2020 - 58min - 108 - We Ask The Question, What Makes A Game Fun To Watch?

GAMING NEWS
It’s been reported that leakers dropped main story points for the Last of Us 2, which has caused Naughty Dog to move up the release date; good for us but bad for the hardworking employees who had their work spoiled for many.
WHAT WILL GAMER’S BODIES LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE? STACY WEIGHS IN:
As a professor, I studied this and teach this. Let’s start from the top and work our way down the diagram. The amount of skull indentation is so deep, this is impossible to get this much deformation from a computer or Xbox headsets. You’d had to have had these headphones on your head as a baby, as your skull hardens. This isn’t possible to the degree shown in the image, not even close.
Dark circles are of course possible, but this isn’t exclusive to games. A lack of sleep or too-much screen time would be likely causes, and that could be from any screen. Even a night out!
Hunchback to this degree is not really possible. It would take a decade or more of poor posture and bone degeneration, and usually injuries to develop anything close to this. This also isn’t exclusive to gaming. Humans adapt their posture and gait to make whatever they are doing as easy as possible. That can manifest as displacement. Not to mention gamers have some of the best, most ergonomic chairs available.
Obesity is probably the biggest threat. It’s easy to move less and eat more. Gaming is fairly sedentary. We can give them that. To prevent this, maybe try a Wii?
Pale skin? Sure. We’re inside a lot, but that doesn’t mean gamers are vitamin deficient!
Repetitive strain injuries and arthritis are possible with repetitive motion. But there is unlikely to be little to no adaptation with a controller. It’s probably better for you than a mouse and keyboard.
Blood pooling happens when blood travels down your legs but can’t get back up to the heart very easily. When you’re seated or standing for long times, blood is fighting against gravity. So, it’s harder to get back to the heart and easier to pool in the lower limbs.Fri, 08 May 2020 - 1h 21min - 105 - It's Time Again For The Next Gen Consoles - Here's Our Take

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Stacy – He’s still playing in WoW as a Pandarian since Blizzard has announced 100% exp boost will go on for the rest of the year (until the next expansion). It’s a great opportunity to get those ALTS leveled up. Maybe it’s something Blizzard should do more regularly as it seems to be well received by the community and servers seem more active.
Amanda- I’m playing Journey to the Savage planet which is the sickest 80’s sci-fi survival romp I’ve ever played. There are even fun 80’s themed commercials that play in your ship too! The only downside is there are jumping puzzles and I suck at jumping puzzles. There are cool creatures and it’s very colorful. You can spend hours scanning wildlife or even jabbing them to get samples that are fairly fun in its own right.
Verdict – Go for it! It’s on Game Pass and it’s pretty nostalgic.
GAMING NEWS
A recent survey from Internet Matters found that 33% of around 15k children surveyed said their parents had no idea if they were playing age-appropriate games. Following last weeks’ topic, this is certainly concerning news. But it looks like they will be publishing a guide for parents, which might help raise awareness.
The new Xbox Series X logo is out and it looks PRO! It’s quite a divergence in style from the old, more rounded Xbox logos that may be moving away from the ‘casual’ audience. We’re here for it.
PS5 VS XBOX SERIES X
Next-Gen Hardware – we’re not tech nerds, but even to a layman, the Xbox isn’t pulling any punches. With backward compatibility for the whole line of consoles, more memory, more teraflops (whatever those are), and backward compatibility with Xbox One controllers (a first in gaming from what we can tell); the Xbox is an actual beast. The only places where PS5 might have a leg up are with data speed, in-controller mic, and the SEXIEST controller we’ve ever seen (looks like Cortana’s bum, no?)!
Next-Gen Games – The Xbox confirmed lineup is mostly legacy exclusives like Halo, Gears, and Elder Scrolls sequels/remasters. Shared launch titles of Cyperpunk 2077 and Watch Dogs 3 have us both excited. PS5 exclusives are more unique IP’s including a new t...Fri, 01 May 2020 - 59min - 104 - Video Game Rating Systems – Is Now The Time For A Change?

GAMING NEWS
Turns out devs get paid by platforms to port their games and apparently – at least when it comes to Google Stadia – their refusal to offer enough cash is a huge factor in why indy games are not showing up on the platform. (That and their confidence in Google’s follow-through on projects.) Contrary to how nearly every other industry works, it seems like devs get wads of cash to develop game versions to sell on Nintendo, Steam etc. This idea is bizarre in the face of most distribution arrangements where holders of captive audiences usually are the ones getting paid to sell products.
Happy 20th birthday to the PLAYSTATION 2! That’s right folks, PS2 is 20 years old and Stacey fondly remembers all the great games he’s enjoyed over the years. During the reminiscing, he shared about The Last of Us (a playstation title) being turned into a TV series. With the next one coming out soon, there are over 40 hours of content to use as fodder for the TV show and Stacey can’t wait to watch! Lastly, sneak peaks have been coming out about a Silent Hill game and Baldur’s Gate 3, both games that Stacey can’t wait to play!

WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Planetfall
A game that is very complex with a lot of replayability in comparison to maybe Civilization. It can have a bit of a learning curve but once you get into it. It’s a very satisfying strategy game.
Amanda’s rating – get it on Game Pass if you like Civilization
Kentucky Route Zero
An almost 2-dimensional side-scrolling walking simulator with just enough mystery and puzzles to keep you engaged. Lots of reading, decent music. It’s definitely one I’m going to finish.
Stacey’s rating – give it a play if it sounds interesting to you.
WHERE ARE THE FLYING CARS!?
Minority Report showed us true touchless visualization. We get Kinect. Willy Wonka lets you float and Ready Player One gives you full movement. Why don’t we have this in our living rooms? We can have Tupac holograms and deep fakes now. We want Tupac but make it consumer. The interfaces seem to exist but it’s stuck in an uncanny valley of usability. There’s nothing that’s come out to date that is better than a controller. Why though?Fri, 13 Mar 2020 - 1h 09min - 100 - Our 100th Episode – A Look Back On Episode One The Horror Episode
