A highly accurate and literal translation of the New Testament

I have to focus all my time and effort now on preparing the Standard Version of the New Testament for publication.

When we look to the Scriptures for the answer, we will see that it is not, after all, the same thing as the lake of fire

The Lord does not expect us to make a profit according to what He has not given us, but only according to what He has given us

We may either ”coin enormous future wealth” with the Lord’s gift to us in this age, or miss the opportunity to reign with Him in His kingdom

According to the Bible, the goal which is set before a person is twofold: when we are yet sinners, our goal is salvation; after we are saved and become believers, our goal is reward. For salvation is provided for sinners, whereas reward is provided for believers. Will we reign with Christ for the 1,000 years? That is what we will find out at His judgment seat

Not everything in the Christian life is a free gift, for the Lord will reward us according to our works

To reign with the Lord in the next age, the 1,000 years, we must live under His authority in this age

There’s so much of the Bible we can’t understand until we see this matter of Christ bringing His kingdom to this present earth

We all know that, as the believers in Christ, we need to meet together in churches with our fellow believers; the new life we have received in Christ drives us inwardly to seek such fellowship.And yet, as important as this is, the New Testament gives us no instructions regarding how to form churches. Rather, as Watchman Nee points out, what it shows us is that, wherever the gospel was preached and people believed in the Lord, these saved believers simply came together, without any planning or other consideration, to be the church in that place: the church in Jerusalem, the church in Corinth, the church in Ephesus, etc.This is the New Testament pattern, and if we desire to follow the Lord according to His desire, it will be our way as well. That is, we will simply meet together with our fellow believers in the place where we live as the one unique church in our locality.However, what we see instead among believers today are so many sects and divisions, which are different kinds of fellowships which are outside of, and in opposition to, the unique New Testament fellowship of God’s Son we have been called into as the believers in Christ:God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.— 1 Corinthians 1:9; cf. 1 Corinthians 1:2, 10-13, Revelation 1:11So in this episode, after stressing again the importance of simply meeting in the Lord’s name, we go one to consider some of these other kinds of fellowship that believers set up for their gatherings today. The Old Testament history of the Children of Israel shows us that we must not make our own choices in the matter of worshiping the Lord

If we see God’s goal to have the church, and the nature of our oneness in Christ, we’ll know how we should meet with our fellow believers

The New Testament believers simply came together to be the church wherever they lived, and that is how we should meet today as well

I hope so many of my dear brothers and sisters in Christ will benefit from what the Lord committed to this servant of the Lord

It is the labor of the Lord’s servants that brings us into the genuine New Testament fellowship

Not only must we have the Spirit of God to be in the New Testament fellowship of God’s Son, but we ourselves must be genuinely spiritual persons

The fellowship of God’s Son (1 Cor. 1:9) must be worked out even in the messy situations we face in our practical church life

To have the fellowship of God’s Son in reality we must experience the cross of Christ and grow and mature in Christ

The spiritual realities of our relationship with Christ and our fellow believers are meant to be expressed practically on the earth

The church is the organic union of all the believers in Christ as the many members of the unique Body of Christ

The church today should express all the riches of Christ in who He is and in what He has obtained and attained.

As the believers in Christ we should stand with God today to bring His kingdom to the earth.

Our concern should be not only for sinners, but for God’s kingdom to be established on the earth

The gospel of Christ produces the saved believers, while the eternal gospel produces the blessed nations

To have a clear understanding of this form of the gospel, we must properly relate it to other portions of the Scripture

This is the gospel in the New Testament for all who have never heard the name of Christ

For so long, a misguided answer to this question has turned so many away from the Bible and the God who wrote it

To serve the Lord today we must be nothing more than His slaves, as those who have been completely defeated by Him.

God has something He desires, and that is why the universe, and we ourselves, exist

The Bible will only make sense to us when we see in it God’s ultimate desire: to bring us into relation with Himself by giving us His divine life

The apostle Peter tells us very clearly who wrote the book of Hebrews

Our love for God must involve every part of our being

If we desire to know Christ and follow Him today, we must be clear about the kind of relationship He desires to have with us, as revealed in the Scripture. And what the Scriptures show us, especially in the New Testament, is this: God wants to be one with mankind. That’s why He became a man in the person of Jesus Christ through the Incarnation; and now He desires to incarnate Himself again in the followers of Christ by imparting Himself as the divine life and nature into our human spirit to make us the genuine Children of God (John 1:12-13, 2 Pet. 1:4), so that in and through us Christ can live His life on the earth once again (Gal. 2:20).This is the relationship God desires to have with us today.This reality of God wanting to impart Himself into us is pictured all through the Bible in God presenting Himself to us as our food (e.g., Gen. 2:9, 16; Rev. 22:2, 14, Exo. 12:1-13, Lev. 1-7). Few Americans today are familiar with the history of how, and when, our country’s first national day of thanksgiving came to be

We can often gain a fuller insight into the truth by examining teachings that are not Biblical in the light of Scripture

To live a fruitful Christian life we need a basic realization, first, that we have a human spirit within us, and second, of its proper function

What does it mean to say our outer man must be consumed so that our inner man may be renewed? (2 Cor. 4:16)

To be genuinely spiritual we must be clear about the difference between our soul and our human spirit.

We must be clear about the unique function of our human spirit if we are to live the Christian life as we should.

We should love the Lord not only “with,” but also “from,” our whole being

Philippians 3:7-10 shows us the way to pursue Christ and the price we have to pay to do so. But then, in verse 11, the apostle Paul speaks of the incentive God gives us for following Christ in such a way: attaining to what may be called “the outstanding resurrection” from among the dead (cf. 1 Cor. 9:24-27, Luke 20:35).Yet, only later in the New Testament, in Revelation 20:4-6, are we able to actually see this “outstanding” resurrection. It is not only the “first resurrection” that is mentioned there, but the “outstanding resurrection” of those overcoming believers who in the next age will sit upon the thrones and rule over the earth on behalf of Christ (Rev. 20:4; cf. To enter into what Paul speaks of in this chapter, we must love the Lord in an absolute way

To know Christ in the deepest way means we know the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, to be conformed to His death.

God is not interested in our doing, but in our dying. He wants to bring us into the death of Christ, to live before Him in resurrection

Philippians 3:7-11 shows us the stages by which we come to know Christ. In verses 7-8 we see that, if we truly desire to gain Christ, we must first allow the Lord to bring us through many difficult experiences, and suffer the loss of so many things, even of all things, so that we come to the point where we are ready to gain Christ.But after this, in verse 9, we come to something still more difficult: the loss, not just of things, but of our very self, so that we are found in Christ instead of in who we are. The experiences spoken of above are mainly outward, but here we have the real, inward dealing of the cross being applied to our very being.Many believers will do so many things for Christ, but few are willing to experience this inward dying to self for the sake of Christ. In the book of Romans, the apostle speaks of the two basic problems a fallen sinner has before God when he says that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). The first problem here is that of sin; that is something we are all aware of. But, what does it mean to say we “fall short of the glory of God”? It means that, because we are now corrupted by sin, we cannot enter into the glory God created us to have. And this relates to the purpose for which God created us in the first place, namely, that of receiving His divine life so we could become His many sons in glory.So, to look at this verse in a positive way, it shows us God’s desire is for us to have His divine glory. And today the goal of His salvation in the New Testament is indeed to bring us into that glory.This concept of salvation is far beyond that of merely having our sins forgiven, and, it must be said, far beyond the view of salvation so many Christians have been taught today. The book of Romans surely does explain how God deals with the guilt of our sins (chps. 3-5), but it does not stop there; rather, it then goes on to show us how God brings us into His divine glory as the many sons of God who are fully conformed to the image of the glorified Christ (chps. 5-8, esp. 8:29-30; cf. Heb. 2:10). Although every believer in Christ has the initial, inward knowing of Him (John 17:3), what we see in Philippians 3 are the stages we must pass through as we pursue Christ and seek to know Him in a much deeper, fuller way than we do through the new birth alone.This chapter shows us that, after suffering the loss of all things and counting them as refuse, we begin to gain Christ (vv. 7-8). For this, we must be found in Him (v. 9) by God, the angels, the demons, and our fellow human beings. They do not find us in our own righteousness, nor in our own kindness, love, goodness, or any of our other virtues, but in Christ Himself, because all else has become refuse to us on account of Christ. This chapter, more than any other portion of the New Testament, shows us how we can come to know Christ

We grow as Christians by allowing the divine life to grow and develop within us, so that the virtues of the divine nature are manifested from within us

If we desire to know Christ, our outer man must be broken so the treasure we have been given in our inner man may come forth. This was the experience of the Apostle Paul (2 Cor. 4:6-12, 12:7-10), and even of Christ Himself (John 12:24). That is why the prophet says, concerning Christ,It pleased God to crush Him.— Isaiah 53:10And eventually, this must become our experience as well. Thus, the Lord will also bring us through this same “crushing” in our daily life, the same process of death and resurrection that Christ went through, to bring us into the real knowing of Christ.So, in the first segment of this episode we review our recent sharing regarding the need to be in the genuine New Testament fellowship if we are to truly experience Christ. Laodicea signifies the church as it is now degraded among so many Christians today, with “everyone doing what is right in his own eyes”

If we open to the Lord and allow Him to write Himself into our being, our entire Christian life will be revolutionized

Among the seven churches in Revelation 2-3, Philadelphia is the one that fulfills the Lord’s desire. This church signifies the recovery of the genuine New Testament church life, which began in the 1800s with the Plymouth Brethren and John Nelson Darby, and continued in the 20th century with the local churches raised up through the ministries of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee.To this church alone the Lord gives the promise of the pre-tribulation rapture (Rev. 3:10; cf. Luke 21:36). But, He also exhorts her to “hold fast what you have, that no one take your crown” (Rev. 3:11); so many of us in the local churches today surely need to heed this word!And to the overcomers in this church, the Lord speaks of how He will write upon them, not only the name of His God and His own new name, but also, the name of the New Jerusalem (Rev. 3:12). To this church alone the Lord says, “You…have kept My word and have not denied My name” (Rev. 3:8).

In Romans 7, the Apostle Paul considers how our efforts to keep the law bring us under bondage. The genuine love of God can only grow and develop within us as we sacrifice ourselves on behalf of the brothers

The Lord’s word to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3 is a truly remarkable prophecy of the seven stages the professing church would pass through before the Lord’s return. Understanding this prophecy will ground us much more firmly in our following of the Lord.But, we can also view this prophecy in terms of the lessons it provides regarding our own spiritual experience, and that is what we focus on in this episode. Understanding the Lord’s word to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3 will greatly help us to see where we need to be in terms of our own church fellowship. So, in this edition of the podcast we come to His word to the church in Sardis, which is found in Revelation 3:1-6.Just as during His earthly ministry, the word the Lord speaks to the seven churches is not at all political; rather, He gives a very strong, direct, and frank word of judgment to deal with so many of the negative and harmful things that had come in among the churches. And yet, at the same time, it is a word of love, for as the Lord says in Revelation 3:19,“As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline.”As we saw in the previous episode, the Lord would not even speak directly to Thyatira, which signifies, prophetically, the pagan, apostate, Roman Catholic church; He would only speak to the remnant of His people there.When we come to Sardis, however, which signifies the Protestant church of the Reformation, we see that, on the one hand, He does speak directly to this church. But, on the other hand, the Lord has nothing good to say about it; He only appreciates a “few” there who have not defiled their garments. To the church itself the Lord says, very simply, “You are dead!” (Rev. 3:1).Considering such a sober word will help us to realize that, while Sardis was indeed a real improvement over Thyatira, it still falls far short of the Lord’s desire. The New Testament makes it clear that for this to happen there must be, first of all, brothers raised up as servants of the Lord to help us in this regard (cf. Col. 1:24-29).In the 20th century the Lord used two brothers in particular in this way, Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. There is one verse in the Bible that tells us very specifically what the Bible is all about.

Like the Children of Israel entering into the Good Land, we should allow God to enlarge us in our experience of Christ.

Do we understand what God’s purpose is? Once we do, we will see that Christ must be everything to us.

One of great truths of the Christian life is that, as the believers in Christ, we are now “in Christ” (1 Cor. 1:30, Eph. 1:3, etc.). In the entire Bible the fullest, most complete picture of the redemptive work of Christ in is the Passover, through which God rescued the Children of Israel from slavery in Egypt. In the New Testament we have the plain words concerning redemption, which give us the proper teachings about this matter, but our understanding of redemption, and how it is applied to us, will become much richer as we consider the Passover. The first part of the book of Exodus shows us that we must leave the world, today’s “Egypt,” so God can have His dwelling place among us. But, today’s “Pharaoh,” Satan, does everything he can to keep us under his evil authority.

Today so many feel we cannot trust that the Bible really is the word of God. This may be especially true among certain kinds of scholars; they claim the text of the Scripture has been corrupted, and anyway, that so many of the stories in the Bible are merely historical myths and symbolism, so we should not take it too seriously in any event. There is, however, one witness more than any other who rebuts such claims, and that is Jesus Christ Himself. Therefore, in this episode of the podcast we consider how no one ever trusted so much in the Bible and its integrity, nor did anyone ever take it in such a literal, historical way, as He did. We know our eternal destiny, but where will we spend the Millennium? That will not be decided until we stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

If we want to understand what salvation is, we must see the central matter in the entire Bible.

To understand the New Testament teaching concerning salvation, we need to see what the Apostle Peter speaks of as “the salvation of the soul” (1 Peter 1:9).

We should have the assurance, not only that our sins are forgiven, but that one day we will be fully conformed to the image of Christ in glory!

We know our eternal destiny, but where will we spend the Millennium? That will not be decided until we stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

How many Christians today have a proper view of salvation? Most, it seems, think that once we believe in Christ and our sins are forgiven, God’s work in us is basically over; now we are just waiting to go to heaven. That was not the view of the Apostle Paul. He knew that, even though his eternal destiny was secure, he still had a race to run to win the prize of reigning with Christ during His 1,000 year kingdom on the earth (1 Cor. 9:24-27.) So, we need to see that forgiveness is not the end of God’s work in our lives, but only the beginning. In this episode of the podcast, therefore, we consider how, if we are not faithful to run the race in this age, we may face a very serious discipline when we see the Lord at the judgment seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10); we may even be excluded from the kingdom of God on the earth (Eph. 5:5), though we will still be with the Lord in His eternal kingdom. As the believers in Christ we should not “stand around, gazing into heaven,” but instead struggle to bring God’s kingdom to the earth

Why Is the world such a mess today? Because Jesus has not yet taken His place on His own throne

The most basic, foundational truth of the New Testament, and of the Bible as a whole, is that God desires to be one with man; that is why He became a man in the person of Jesus Christ (John 1:1, 14). In doing so, He necessarily took on the human nature.Now, to complete the process of making us one with Himself, He is working to uplift our human nature with His divine nature. He does this by giving us His divine life with its divine nature through our new birth in Christ (John 1:12-13, 3:3), so that, as the Apostle Peter says, we are made “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Pet. 1:4).Unfortunately, so many Christians today fail to understand this truth, in large part because their Bibles wrongly tell them that we have merely been “adopted” by God (e.g., Eph. 1:5, Gal. 4:5), so that that we do not actually share in His life.The problem has to do with how to correctly translate the Greek word huiothesia (Strong’s #5206). The fact that the Bible speaks of “the only begotten” Son of God (John 1:14, 18, etc.), has troubled some Christians. This is because such a statement could be taken to mean that the Son was begotten at a certain point, rather than being the eternal God who has always existed. This is especially true when it comes to the matter of the reward and discipline of the believers in the coming age, the Millennium, because it is so easy for us to be biased in this regard for one reason or another. Revelation 20 shows us that there will be a 1,000 year reign of Christ upon the earth after this age. However, the teaching of Amillennialism denies this, and in doing so deprives God’s children of so much of His word, and of so much of our hope of the Lord’s return; this is something truly evil. Nonetheless, it seems that today this evil teaching is gaining in popularity among Bible-believing Christians. In this episode, therefore, we consider three great “strikes” in the Bible against Amillennialism, to explain why we should not accept it if we desire to hold to the Biblical view of the end times. Each of the letters to the seven churches Revelation 2-3 concludes with a distinct reward the Lord promises “to him who overcomes.” Then in Revelation 20:4-6 we see the fulfillment of these promises in “the first resurrection” (Rev. 20:5), during the 1,000 year reign of Christ on the earth. So, to have a good understanding of the overcomers’ reward, we need to look closely at these verses in Revelation 20. The Passover in Exodus 12 is a remarkable picture of the death of Christ. Before we can fully appreciate it, however, we need to see how it is connected to the Lord’s Table. The Passover is the Old Testament memorial feast pointing forward to the death of Christ;  the Lord’s Table is the memorial feast of the New Testament. On the one hand it points us back to the death of Christ, and on the other, it points us forward to His return. In the book of Revelation we see the church that fulfills God’s desire in this age, that is, the church in Philadelphia (Rev. 3:8-10). However, in First Corinthians, the Apostle Paul shows us the way to deal with the problems that may arise in the practical church life, so that we can become the church the Lord desires. The Parable of the Sower is perhaps the clearest depiction in the entire Bible of how we need to deal with our heart so that it can become the good ground for the Lord to grow within us. In particular, those of us who have been in the Lord for a number of years need to be careful of the “thorns” that may grow up within us to choke the word and so prevent us from bringing forth any fruit to maturity. In the Old Testament, Lot, when he left Abraham, seems to be an example of one who did not deal with his heart in an adequate way. It is very common for Bible teachers to refer to the “atonement” of Christ when speaking of the death of Christ on the cross. However, this is to demean what Christ actually accomplished. The Old Testament sacrifices only covered sins; Jesus, by His death on the cross, took them away completely.

The book of Exodus shows us, using the picture of the Children of Israel leaving Egypt, that the purpose of Christ’s redemptive work is not merely to save us from our sin, but to deliver us from the world, today’s “Egypt” (Acts 2:40, Gal. 1:4). This is so God can gain His kingdom on the earth and build up the church as His dwelling place, just as the Children of Israel built up the tabernacle in the wilderness.
