“Mijn Nederlands was echt slecht deze week.”
Twee vrouwen zeiden dit vanochtend tegen mij.
Allebei tijdens hun 1:1 les.
En bij allebei dacht ik: hmmm.. is dat écht waar (true)?
Want meestal is je Nederlands niet “slecht”.
> Misschien probeerde je te praten over een verbouwing en kende je de woorden nog niet.
> Misschien was je moe na een drukke ochtend.
> Misschien sprak je met iemand die je niet kende, terwijl je trein net was uitgevallen na een botsing en niemand wist wanneer je verder kon.
Dat is iets héél anders dan:
“Mijn Nederlands is niet goed genoeg.”In deze podcast laat ik je zien hoe je kunt stoppen met dat keiharde oordeel (judgment) over jezelf en veel specifieker kunt kijken naar wat er écht gebeurde (happened).
Want Nederlands leren gaat niet alleen over grammatica, woordenschat en huiswerk.
- Het gaat ook over je comfortzone.
- Je zenuwstelsel.
- Durven (dare to) praten terwijl je niet alle woorden hebt.
En jezelf niet compleet afbranden ('fire down') zodra één gesprek anders ging dan je wilde.Ik geef je de vragen die ik mijn 1:1 klanten stel wanneer zij zeggen: “Mijn Nederlands was slecht.”
Zodat jij na een moeilijk gesprek niet denkt: zie je wel, ik kan dit niet, maar weet: dít maakte het moeilijk - en dit kan ik oefenen.

Waarom begrijp ik als Nederlandse docent zo goed wat jij als international voelt?
Die vraag kreeg ik de afgelopen week meerdere keren (multiple times).
Ik ben nooit écht geëmigreerd. Ik ben in Nederland geboren en opgegroeid. Dus hoe kan het dat ik begrijp waarom jij bevriest (freeze) als iemand ineens Nederlands tegen je praat?
Ik werk al sinds 2013 met internationals die Nederlands leren. In al die jaren zag ik steeds hetzelfde gebeuren:
In de les gaat het goed. Maar zodra er een gesprek begint met de buurvrouw, de bakker of een collega... komt de freeze.
Waarom gebeurt dat?
In deze aflevering vertel ik mijn eigen verhaal. Over hoe mijn reizen en mijn studie mijn blik (my view) hebben veranderd. Waarom ik toch een expat ben, van binnen (on the inside). En waarom ik uiteindelijk veel meer geïnteresseerd raakte in mensen dan in grammatica.
Want hoe langer ik lesgaf, hoe duidelijker (clear) het werd: Nederlands leren gaat niet alleen over woorden en regels.
Het gaat over zelfvertrouwen (confidence) en over begrijpen waarom je bevriest.
En over leren hoe je tóch dat gesprek aangaat.

Waarom voelt Nederlands zo veel moeilijker?

Je bent niet meer dezelfde persoon als 20 jaar geleden (ago).
Je hebt meer verantwoordelijkheden (responsibilities), misschien kinderen, een carrière en een zenuwstelsel (nervous system) dat de hele dag stress voelt bij het Nederlands. En dat kost energie.

Veel internationals denken dat ze meer grammatica, meer woorden of nog een cursus nodig hebben om Nederlands te spreken.
Dat dacht Haney ook.
Ze woont al zes jaar in Nederland, heeft een Nederlandse man, een Nederlandse schoonfamilie en werkt tussen Nederlandse collega's. Ze begreep veel Nederlands, maar toch voelde spreken spannend, vermoeiend (exhausting) en soms zelfs onmogelijk. In deze aflevering praat ik met Haney over haar reis van onzekerheid (insecurity) naar zelfvertrouwen (confidence). We hebben het over:
- Verhuizen naar Nederland
- Nederlands leren tijdens Corona
- Het inburgeringsexamen (integration exam)
- Waarom traditionele taalcursussen voor haar niet werkten
En hoe kleine stapjes uiteindelijk grote resultaten geven.

- dat Nederlanders helemaal niet zo formeel zijn
- en waarom “zeg maar jij hoor” zo’n belangrijke Nederlandse zin is.

Veel van mijn studenten wonen jarenlang in Nederland zonder Nederlands te spreken, maar dit verandert zodra je kinderen naar school gaan. De cursus helpt internationale moeders en vaders om actiever betrokken (involved) te zijn bij het schoolleven van hun kinderen. Ik help je om Nederlands te kunnen spreken in verschillende situaties.

In deze video-podcast (in het Nederlands) praat ik met Maartje Monnéover het emigreren naar een nieuw land en het leren van een nieuwe taal.
Maartje deelt haar ervaringen (experiences) als Nederlandse die naar Frankrijk is verhuisd en legt uit (explains) hoe het zenuwstelsel (nervous system) een grote rol speelt bij het leren van een nieuwe taal. We bespreken ook hoe het belangrijk is om je zenuwstelsel te reguleren en ontspannen te zijn tijdens het leerproces.
Ze vertelt over hoe moeilijk ze het vond in het begin in haar nieuwe land, en de uitdagingen (challenges) die ze tegenkwam. Ook deelt ze tips om jou te helpen je kalmer te voelen in je nieuwe land.
Dit was zo'n mooi gesprek, dat we hebben besloten om hier meer over te vertellen!

In deze aflevering (episode) vertel ik je over de eerste schooldag van mijn zoon! Hij is nu ook 4 en dat betekent dat ik twee kinderen op de basisschool heb!
In Nederland gaan bijna alle kinderen naar de basisschool(primary school) als ze 4 jaar oud zijn, maar ze moeten naar school als ze 5 jaar zijn.
Ik vertel je alles over het proces rond 'naar school gaan' en ik geef je tips voor deze periode.
Ben jij een 'expat- parent' in Nederland en gaat je kind (bijna) naar een Nederlandse basisschool. Dan komt het moment dat 'not speaking Dutch' is 'not the best option'.

In this episode I'm sharing the insights me and my students had after comparing them speaking in their 'moedertaal' and in het Nederlands.

It's so much more relaxed to speak in a language you don't have to think about.
It's less hard work for your brain.
But it also get easier when we train the brain.
This is what we do in the Dutch Confidence course. We train your brain to speak more fluently in Dutch, so that you don't have to think so much anymore. This way you'll feel less tired, less overwhelmed and stressed and less likely to say 'sorry ik spreek niet zo goed Nederlands'.
And then you can finally go and join that singing/pottery/running/book-club or be more actively involved at school or work-activities which you never dared before because of the language barrier.
