A recent Freedom of Information request by FT Adviser revealed the number of firms authorised to provide retail investment advice has fallen from 6,240 in August 2022 to 5,805 as at February 2024.

Taking a closer look at the adviser numbers, FT Adviser found the number of young advisers has diminished in the past 18 months while the number of older advisers has grown. So what does this mean for the advice profession?

Last week, St James’s Place announced it was scrapping exit fees for the vast majority of new investment bonds and pensions as part of an overhaul of its charging structure.

The firm said there would be a revised charging structure for new investment bonds and pensions which will operate with an initial charge and ongoing charges but without any early withdrawal charges.

In addition, charges across all its wrappers, which have historically been disclosed primarily on an all-inclusive basis, will be separated into component parts. 

It’s no surprise that the FTSE 100 has often been scrutinised for its fees so this was largely welcomed by the industry but had many questioning why now?

Earlier this month the Financial Conduct Authority published the results of its review into lifetime mortgage advice, concluding it was "disappointed" by what it found.

One of the overarching conclusions the FCA reached is that there were many examples of advisers steering outcomes in favour of a lifetime mortgage and failing to discuss alternatives. In short, if you went to an adviser to ask about a lifetime mortgage, you were likely to end up being recommended a lifetime mortgage regardless of your circumstances.

Last month, Tenet announced it will close its network, with its appointed representatives moving to The Openwork Partnership as part of an exclusive agreement with the company.

The agreement will provide Tenet's firms and advisers the choice of retaining their independent status through Openwork's IFA business 2plan Wealth Management or becoming part of the restricted Openwork proposition.

This came as the Financial Conduct Authority’s annual report and accounts for 2022-23 revealed that there has been a 19 per drop in the number of appointed representative firms in almost three years.

The FCA said intervention from the regulator has seen the number of ARs decline in recent years.

Firms are frantically preparing as the deadline is fast approaching at the end of this month. 

Given the imminent timescale, it is encouraging to note that a survey by Schroders revealed that 19% of advisers said they are fully prepared for consumer duty and 77% said that their preparations are in progress and that they should be ready for the end of July. 

However, 4% had said that they had not yet started to prepare.

The advice gap is ever-growing and as a profession, financial advisers have a role to play. But is it solely up to the financial services industry?

A recently conducted poll on Twitter asked financial advisers what their views were on financial education in schools and whether it should be a collective effort by the advice / financial services industry or whether the onus should be on schools and the government.

More than half of the advisers said schools need to do more, around 32% said advisers need to help and some 13% said it’s not advisers' problem.

Collaboration seems to be a key necessity here in order for it to work and many of the larger financial advice businesses are already trying to do their bit, but what more can be done to reduce the advice gap and increase financial literacy?

In December, the chancellor Jeremy Hunt took a trip to Scotland and announced plans to cut or change swathes of financial services regulation as part of the so-called "Edinburgh reforms".

Value investing is an investment philosophy whereby the investor buys assets that they believe to be undervalued by the market and thus have the potential to generate returns.

Over the last 12 months there has been a shift from growth to value: Surging inflation and commodity prices have been hugely beneficial for legacy companies in the oil and gas, and mining sectors as they have been able to take advantage of the global energy crisis and the switching on of demand post-Covid. An environment of rising interest rates is also helping value stocks to appear more valuable, as growth companies tend to have longer-term cash flow horizons; hence their valuations are affected more by rising rates.

So, with the increasing focus on sustainability can one be sustainable and a value investor at the same time?

The Chartered Insurance Institute's decision to appoint a majority of directors to the Personal Finance Society's board has triggered a chain of events which has led to resignations from the PFS and anger among its members.

In 2022 annuity rates have climbed by 40-50 per cent - which is a 14-year high- with these rates boosted by soaring long-term gilt yields.

And in late September and early October there were some particularly sharp increases.- in part, be attributed to financial markets having less confidence in the government, following the “mini” Budget.

London mayor Sadiq Khan wants more power and financing for cities so they can deal with and find solutions to climate change. Cities, after all, are responsible for over two thirds of emissions and local administrations, says Khan, are seen as the “doers”, while national governments are the “delayers”.

He thinks that mayors should be part of the UN climate conference negotiations. In fact, COP27, which wrapped up in Sharm el-Sheikh this month, will be the last without cities at the table.
