- 1402 - Asking Forgiveness Before Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur is a day of atonement and expiation. On this auspicious day, the Almighty forgives us for all our transgressions and we become purified before God. But the purification of Yom Kippur is limited to sins between man and God. For interpersonal transgressions, there is no atonement unless the aggressor appeases and secures forgiveness from the aggrieved. In this sweeping episode we discuss the nature of interpersonal transgressions and the tremendous sensitivity and delicateness required to not cause another person pain or loss; we scour the process of how to gain atonement for interpersonal transgressions; and we talk about the importance and the challenge of forgiving others who have wronged us.

The last day of Moshe's reign, coincided with the first day of Joshua's reign. For one day, Moshe and Joshua led the nation together as co-heads. On that day, Moshe and Joshua together conveyed the exquisite, comprehensive sound of Haazinu. A song that spans everything: the past, the present, the future, this world, the world to come. A song that encapsulates all of Torah, a song that foretells all future events. Not all stanzas though scream joy. Not all of what we read does not evoke ecstasy. Not all of what we read inspires us to dance. We read about the nation going astray - Jeshurun growing fat and corpulent and rebelled against God. We read about the disastrous consequences of what happens to us when God turns away from us. We read a frightening and chilling account of the condition of our people in exile. In this interesting Parsha podcast, we learn about Joshua's first day on the job, and the secret of the Song of Haazinu.

The majority of the Parsha is the Song of Haazinu, an intricate tapestry of prophecies that encapsulate the grand scope of Jewish history. The commentators on this Parsha strive to even understand the basic meaning of its words. In this penultimate episode of the 8th cycle of the Parsha podcast, focus on the commentary of the Ohr HaChaim. While we don't go through the entirety of his magisterial commentary, we select five magnificent comments from this work. What we discover is an absolutely profound study of scope and depth and insight. Still in the final day of Moshe’s life, he conveys to the nation a 43-verse Song predicting the contours of Jewish history, both past, present, and future. The patterns are familiar to the readers of Deuteronomy and even casual observers and students of Jewish history: The nation is recipients of tremendous divine goodness, yet they become corpulent and rebel against God. Consequently, God allows the nations to feast upon the people, but despite the harsh and painful torment and suffering, we continue to exist. Rush Hashanah is a day of judgment. On this day, God sits, as it were, on His Throne of Judgment. The intensity and scrutiny of divine judgment is unfathomable. Even the angels quake and quiver with trepidation. For some, the results of the judgment are instantaneous: the completely righteous are immediately inscribed and sealed into the Book of Life, and the completely wicked are immediately inscribed and sealed into the Book of Death. For the in-betweeners however, their fate is determined by their conduct during the Ten Days of Repentance. In this very sharp and interesting podcast, we offer three approaches to the age-old question of why we don't see a massive uptick in all-cause mortality on Rosh Hashanah. If all the wicked perish instantly, why aren't the morgues jam-packed with dead sinners on the day following Rosh Hashanah?

The entire book of Devarim occurs over the span of 36 days, the final 36 days of Moshe's life. The final four Parshas are an account of the last day of Moshe's life. As he is about to transition to the other world, the reliable shepherd gathers all the people together for one last covenant and exhortation to hearken to the word of God and to not go astray. But why would the nation go astray? These are the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who were chosen by God to be his people. This is the nation that witnessed the Exodus, the theophany at Sinai, who ate the manna and drank water from a rock, who received revelation directly from God and Torah from Moshe himself. Why is there a risk that they will lapse into idolatry? Why is there a concern that they may mimic the barbarous, abominable ways of the nations? The answer, as we learn in this week's edition of the Parsha Podcast, is fascinating and frightening.

In truth, the value of mitzvos is incalculable to humans, and only God can accurately assess its value and power. On the final day of Moshe’s life, he gathered the entire nation – men, women, children, and according to the Talmud, all souls of future Jews – to pass them through a final covenant with God. The parsha also contains the prophetic predictions of the Messianic times, and it ends with a simple, binary choice: Moshe tells the nation, “Behold I have placed before you today, the life and the good, and death and evil… Choose Life!” Moshe is 120 years old to the day. He was born on the seventh of Adar and now it is the seven of Adar 120 years later. Today is his last day before his passing and he is taking leave from the nation and handing over the reins to Joshua.

Death and the afterlife are foreign, and often terrifying, subjects. Naturally, most of us tend to try to avoid thinking about it too much. This is exactly what allows the evil inclination to deceive and mislead us. It's an important subject to the well-upon, though too much morbid fascination can be counterproductive. In part 2 of our series on when and how to prepare for the afterlife, we address the weighty subject of when young people encounter mortality. When a young person, God forbid, loses a relative, a friend, a parent, or when God forbid, a young person is diagnosed with a terminal illness, this difficult subject is thrust the spotlight. As always, the Torah provides clear, illuminating guidance and direction.

Priests play a vital role in the release of accidental murderers from cities of refuge and in the ceremony of decapitating a calf when an unidentified corpse is discovered between two cities. Cherubs made many appearances in the Tabernacle and the Temple. Hewn onto the Cover of the Ark off the Covenant were two golden cherubs facing each other. But there were more cherubs. Of the Tabernacle's multiple fabric covers was one called the "Mishkan" upon which two cherubs were embroidered. In the partition that separated the sanctuary from the Holy of Holies, the image of a cherub was embroidered. In the temple that Solomon built, there were more cherubs, including an additional set of enormous ten-cubit-tall cherubs in the Holy of Holies that towered above the Ark of the Covenant. The cherubs have important symbolism. One of them represents God Almighty, and the second represents His cherished nation, Israel. In the next installment of our study of the magisterial work Nefesh HaChaim, we learned about the cherubs: what they represent, how they were oriented, and what that teaches us about how we direct the trajectory of the world. Idolatry is anathema. Idolatry in the Holy Land is totally intolerable. Multiple times in the book of Devarim, we are exhorted to thoroughly and utterly destroy any remnant of idolatry that we encounter in the Land, be it altars, pillars, idolatrous trees, or molten images. But it is insufficient to eliminate the idols. We are required to uproot the idols from their source. The impulse to engage in idolatry has been rendered extinct today. No one craves to genuflect to an image of wood and stone, but we still can be enticed to do bad things. Just as we are commanded to eliminate all foreign gods from the land, we are commanded to eliminate the foreign gods squatting in our heart. The Torah spends a lot of time cautioning us against idolatry. As the nation is about to cross over the Jordan and enter Canaan, they are repeatedly warned to not fall prey to the idolatrous practices of the indigenous population. Instead, they must shatter the idolatrous altars, destroy idolatrous infrastructure, obliterate idolatrous paraphernalia , uproot idolatrous trees, and thoroughly dismantled all idolatrous venues. The warnings against idolatry are one of the primary themes of the book of Devarim and of Moshe's last messages to the nation. What does this mean for us today? We are are quite unfamiliar with the idolatry of yore. It does not resonate with us. We don't understand why the ancients were so enamored by idolatry. When we read all about idolatry in the Torah we ask the important question: what does this have to do with us? In this very interesting and stimulating podcast, we talk about modern idolatry and how it compares and contrasts with the idolatry of yore. We also share several fascinating observations from our glorious antecedents regarding hints and references to the Christian hero in the Torah and in the Talmud.

Several themes seem to be repeating themselves again and again throughout the Book of Devarim. For example, the nation is repeatedly encouraged to not be fearful of the formidable Canaanite Nations waiting for them on the other side of the Jordan. But the one theme that repeats itself more frequently than any other is the nation being encouraged to observe the laws, the statutes, and the commandments of Torah. They are encouraged, they are exhorted, they are enticed with rewards for observance and threatened with the consequences of its repudiation. Why is it so important for the nation to be told repeatedly to observe the commandments? Why do some people tend to disregard some of the commandments and to trample upon them with their heels? In this very interesting of Parsha podcast, we learned about the hidden mechanisms of mitzvos. We don't necessarily understand how the inputs lead to the outputs. We don't understand how the observance of mitzvos elevates a person to become Angel like. But the proof is in the pudding and a pudding is very tasty.

Flashy achievements make the news. Great triumphs, awesome deeds, transcendent moments grab our attention and seize our imagination. Humdrum acts fail to stir excitement. But when we are devising a strategy for how to prepare our ladder of ascension, it may be ill-advised to pursue quantum leaps of greatness. In fact the most effective process to transformative greatness is slow and gradual and dotted with seeming unremarkable, bite-sized micro movements up a very tall ladder. This idea is hinted to in Rashi's first comment to our Parsha. When we analyze other parts of the Parsha, we see a variety of angles as to why the slow and unremarkable path is optimal. A year after the Exodus Moshe dispatched a contingency of dignified men to scout the land of Canaan prior to the Nation's invasion. It was a catastrophic debacle. The scouts returned with a devastating, slanderous report about the Land, prompting the nation to bewail needlessly all night, and condemning the nation to 40 years of wondering in the Wilderness. The day of the return of the scouts was designated for misfortune. On this day, the ninth day of the month of Av, both temples were destroyed. The Midrash tells us that there is a causal link: because the nation cried needlessly on this night, they were condemned to cry for a very good reason on this night. What is the connection between the sin of the spies and the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple? The Temple is a central component of our religion. Ever since it was destroyed by the Romans, our nation has been operating in a suboptimal fashion. Certainly, we have prayers to match the sacrifices of God, and our Torah Academy halls, the four cubits of halacha, is a place where the divine presence rests; we have the Almighty's precious mitzvos, and we have the opportunity to pray to Him and to repent and return to Him, but something vital is missing. Absent a Temple, the world is blanketed in darkness. Absent the Temple, it is as if there is a thick metal blockade separating us from our Father in heaven. It doesn't need to be like this. The Temple can be rebuilt, and we can and must play a part. What can we do to build the Third Temple? Our sages laid out a roadmap.

The Torah has a very different perspective: your power to communicate verbally is your most essential human characteristic and corrupting your speech is corrupting your essence. Moreover, your speech creates realities of enormous gravity. This is not the only departure from common perception found in our double Parsha. The Book of Bamidbar ends on a bit of a surprising note. The final chapter of our book revisits the somewhat technical narrative relating to the inheritance of the ancestral lands of a man named Tzelafchad. This man from the tribe of Menashe died without sons, and in chapter 27 of the book of numbers we learned that his lands will be apportioned to his daughters in lieu of male heirs. One may have thought that the saga of Tzelafchad was all settled. But no. The final chapter of the book revisits this story and offers an epilogue to it. Why is this the most fitting culmination of the book? In this very special Parsha podcast, we offer a novel solution. We learn how these five sisters were each remarkable in her own way, a lesson that serves as a fitting and powerful crescendo to the Book of Bamidbar.

Certain legends are irreplaceable. There was never a man like Moshe who spoke to God face to face. Aaron, the first high priest, set an incredibly high bar for all high priests who followed. In this week's Parsha, successors are designated for both Moshe and Aaron. Aaron's grandson Pinchas was elevated to the priesthood which would eventually become the high priest. Moshe's trusty attendant Joshua was selected to replace Moshe. Why were these two people selected for these prestigious roles? When we examine the ascension of Joshua and Pinchas, we find two very different paths. For aspirants of high offices it is important to learn the different pathways to greatness. But even if we don't have designs on a great office, it is incumbent upon us achieve personal greatness. In that important domain too these two pathways can lead us to the promised land.

Pinchas, Aaron's grandson, did a valorous and zealous act of bravery when he skewered the prince of the tribe of Shimon and stopped the plague from wiping out the entire nation. What motivated Pinchas' behavior? What attributes were at play during his act of zealotry? This question is answered in a comment in Rashi in our Parsha. We learn how qualities and attributes that are present in antecedents are manifested in their descendants. Character is heritable. That same theme is featured elsewhere in our Parsha, when the daughter is of Tzalafchad seek a portion in the land of Israel, in a manner similar to that of their antecedent Joseph. When we zoom out, we discover that the heritability of character, both good and bad, is featured in many many places in the literature. The lessons and the takeaways are profound.

In Parshas Chukas, we read about a highly unusual mitzvah: The Red Heifer, when an entirely red cow is burned together with a motley concoction of ingredients, and the resultant ashes are used to sprinkle on people that came into contact with dead people in order to purify them from their spiritual contamination. We also learn about the passing of Miriam and Aaron, and the multiple battles that the nation participated in on the Eastern bank of the Jordan, and we puzzle over the sin that condemned Moses and Aaron to die before entering the Land. Parshas Balak begins after the Jewish nation trounced the mighty kingdoms of Sichon and Og, the comparatively smaller and weaker kingdom of Moab resorted to unconventional warfare to attack the nation by hiring the prophet of the nations, a wily and devious character named Bilaam, to curse the Jews. It did not work out as planned.

Cousins don't always agree on everything. Korach and Moshe had a disagreement, a debate. Moshe was instructed by God that the nation is limited to one high priest, Aaron. Korach argued that the entire nation is entirely holy, and why can't everyone be a high priest? Korach has some apparent legitimacy to his perspective. Prior to the Sinai Revelation, Moshe told the nation that if they accept the terms of the covenant, they will be a "kingdom of priests and a holy nation." The whole nation is holy; the whole nation is priests. But Korach's debate is classified as a debate, "not for the sake of heaven." When done properly, debate is utterly transformative. Not only is debate encouraged, it is one of the only pathways to achieve true individuality and distinction.

We all have weaknesses. Nations, as well, have witnesses. When the Almighty sought to give the Torah to the Jewish people at Sinai, He first offered it to all the nations. When they asked what was included in it, God revealed to them how the Torah disallowed that particular weakness that that particular Nation had. What is the Jewish weakness? What is our kryptonite? When we study the story of Korach we find the answer. Korach launched a rebellion against Moshe and Aaron by specifically trying to exploit the innate Jewish weakness.

There are two wives – two women whose names we don't even know – who caused seismic, tectonic shifts in the fates and the fortunes of their husbands, their families, their tribes, and the nation at large. 254 men were part of the Korach rebellion against Moshe and Aaron. 253 of them perished. On(e) survived thanks to his wife. The ringleader of this rebellion was incited to undertake this insurrection due to his wife. These wives carry a lot of sway over their husbands. When we unravel the story, we discover that the impact of these women goes far beyond the fate of their husbands.

Prior to initiating the war of conquest of the land of Canaan, the nation did the prudent thing: they undertook a reconnaissance mission to scout out the enemy defenses. Moshe selected 12 righteous men, one from each tribe, to traverse the land and inspect it from the inside. The result was a catastrophic disaster: the scouts brought a devastating report about the land, prompting the people to lose faith in God and in the prospect of entering Canaan. In this Parsha podcast, we explore three elements of the Parsha: the first segment orients around one of the descriptions of the land offered by the scouts. The second and third segments relate to the end of the Parsha: The execution of a person who was gathering twigs on Shabbos, and the commandment to tie fringes to corners of our garments.

The longest Parsha in the Torah (Nasso) contains a seemingly unconnected string of subjects. It begins by detailing the responsibilities of adult working-age Levites from three Levite families, followed by a census of those Levites. In the middle of the Parsha contains the laws of the sotah (the suspected adulteress) and the Nazir (a person who accepts upon himself a vow to refrain from wine, coming into contact with the dead, and haircuts for a period of time, typically 30 days), and the priestly blessing (the special blessing formula that priests are commanded to bless Israel with). The Parsha ends with the special gifts and tributes given by the princes of the 12 tribes of Israel on the day of the inauguration of the Tabernacle and on the eleven subsequent days. At first glance, it seems very hard to find a common thread connecting these disparate subjects. In this very interesting and fun Parsha podcast, we share a powerful and counterintuitive theme that is strung throughout the Parsha. The takeaways for us are profound.

Not everyone loves math and numbers. I've heard disturbing rumors that there are some people who even claim to hate math and get irritated when they see numbers. The Book of Bamidbar is called the Book of Numbers because there are a lot of numbers, and in no place are there more numbers than in our Parsha. We read about the numbers of each tribe individually, and then we read about the numbers of each trio of tribes in the four quadrants surrounding the Tabernacle. The number of Levites, the number of firstborn. The truth is, it's not a numbers game. There's something absolutely profound found in the censuses in our Parsha. In this transformative podcast, we learn how the census, the orientation of the nation around the Tabernacle, the flags, and the segregation of the Levites from the Israelites reveal the two different modes of Divine Service: the Israelite mode and the Levite mode. And we discover that even non-Levites can become honorary members of that most elevated tribe.

I don't know many farmers. This country used to be an agrarian society, but today fewer than 2% of Americans are farmers. This was not the case in antiquity. The Priests are the noblest amongst us, direct descendants of Aaron, the legendary first priest. They have a very important role to play amongst their people. They have a special blessing that they can bestow upon the people, and they can process sacrifices on our behalf in the Temple. They are spiritual leaders of men. With this role of distinction come certain restrictions: who they can marry, who they can come into contact with. They are forbidden to come into contact with the dead. They are forbidden to be in the same enclosure as a dead body, but it is certainly a worthwhile exchange. In this very sharp Parsha podcast, we contrast the beginning of the parsha with its end. Although most of us are not priests, the lessons that we learn are very pertinent to all and very powerful.

The hardest part of reaching space is the first moment of liftoff, getting the first inch off the ground. The second inch is still hard, but a little bit easier. The first bit of liftoff serves as momentum for the second inch. In our pursuit of spiritual and personal greatness, we are trying to achieve stratospheric heights. We're trying to depart from the atmosphere of pettiness, and achieve something grand, something majestic, something otherworldly. The first step is the most important. Importantly, this same principle works in the opposite direction. Just as positive momentum facilitates achievement and height, the danger of negative momentum cannot be underestimated. The Torah tells a tragic and dramatic story about a man with a checkered pedigree and a tumultuous backstory who committed a grievous crime for which he was executed. When we take a careful look at what happened, we see the sheer power of momentum.

Yom Kippur is a different day than every other day of the year. It is the holiest day, the day of atonement, a day of fasting and prayer and repentance. When the Temple was extant, the Nations' attention was oriented around the high priest's services in God's holy Temple. This was the one time a year that the high priest walked into the Holy of Holies. Of the many different services performed by the high priest on this day was a most peculiar one: Two identical goats were given very different fates, determined by a lottery: One was offered as a sacrifice to God on the altar in the Temple, and one was to serve as a scapegoat, bearing the sins of the nation. The scapegoat was sent away to the desert, to the wilderness, to Azazel, where it was chucked off a cliff side, thereby expiating the nation's sins. What is the message behind the process of the identical goats? What is the message behind the scapegoat? in this fantastic Parsha podcast, we learned the secret of the goats with a brand new twist.

Parshas Kedoshim has the highest mitzvah density of any parsha: In its 64 verses, we learn 51 separate mitzvos covering many different areas of Jewish practice, including arguably the most famous mitzvah in the whole Torah.

A very large percentage of Torah is dedicated to the laws of purity and impurity. This week's double Parshas of Tazria and Metzora largely deal with these laws. One variant of impurity that is discussed in both parshas is that of a metzora, A metzora is someone who is stricken with the tangible illness of tzaraas caused by a variety of sins, most notably the sin of lashon hara, evil talk and slander. In Parshas Tazria we read about when it strikes a person’s garment or body; and the bulk of Parshas Metzora orients around tzaraas remediation and a third type of tzaraas that afflicts the sinner's house.

Aaron brought offerings; his sons brought offerings too. Both offerings evoked fire from heaven. Aaron's offering prompted a heavenly fire to consume the sacrifices upon the altar. Aaron's son's offering spawned a fire too. The fire rained down from heaven and killed Aaron's two sons. When we contrast Aaron's offerings with his sons, we find other differences. Aaron was hesitant to undertake his role. The sons of Aaron opt for boldness and audaciousness. After months of preparation and building, and a week of inauguration, the nation was anticipating the climax of the Tabernacle experience: When God finally rested His Presence upon the people’s handiwork. On the eighth day the Tabernacle was erected for good, and a Heavenly fire consumed the various sacrifices offered upon the Altar and the nation experienced the euphoria and intense trepidation of having God in their midst. But a second divine fire marred the joy when Aaron’s two sons were consumed for bringing a foreign and improper offering.

The final service performed in the Tabernacle and Temple each day was the second tamid elevation offering, that was brought in the late afternoon. Once nightfall came, no more sacrifices were offered, but the Temple still hummed. The sacrifices that had been offered earlier that day were processed on the altar overnight. Our Parsha begins with the morning. Yesterday's sacrifice has been transformed into a pile of smoldering ash. Before any sacrifices can be brought today, some of yesterday's ashes must be removed from atop the altar. What is the meaning of this mitzvah? What is the secret of the ashes? What do the ashes have to do with Abraham, the only person described as ashes? What can we learn from the removal of the ashes ceremony that kickjstarted each day in the temple and the tabernacle? In this interesting podcast, we learned two approaches to understand the secret of the ashes.

Angels are way loftier than us, right? They're totally spiritual, they cannot possibly sin, they are messengers of God. We, on the other hand, are mortal, fallible, pitiful humans. That's not necessarily the case. Our Sages tell us that the human soul is much loftier than the Angels. Our inborn holiness dwarfs that of our winged counterparts. Our supremacy over the Angels is demonstrated with the Shema declaration. Angels must do much more to connect with God than we do. In this very interesting and provocative podcast, we highlight the Shema's role in elevating us, and share a powerful and profound perspective on the three different ways to achieve spiritual ascent. The first paragraph of the highlights one way to achieve greatness, the second highlights a second path, and the third paragraph contains is yet another way to do it. The end goal is absolute closeness with God. The end goal is merging heaven and Earth, body and soul. They end goal is to be holy to Hashem our God. But there are three ways to do it.

The concept of sacrifices is quite foreign to us. It's been nearly 2,000 years since our nation merited to bring a sacrifice in God's Temple. We hope and pray and yearn for the rebuilding of the temple and the resumption of sacrifices. But as of today, sacrifices are hard for us to appreciate. The Torah spends a lot of time on sacrifices. Adam brought a sacrifice. Cain and Abel brought sacrifices. Noah, after departing the ark, Noah brought a sacrifice. Abraham brought sacrifices. Jethro brought sacrifices. The pastel lamb is a sort of sacrifice. And the entirety of our Parsha relates to sacrifice us. What could be the the deeper meaning behind these rituals?
