Wed, 23 Sep 2026 - 28min - 176 - #170 Movement on the dance floor and in between - with Jonathan Coppard | Lindy Hop, Balboa, Salsa, West Coast Swing | Herräng Dance Camp
What happens when one dance trip changes the direction of your life?
In this episode, I sit down with Jonathan Copard in his giant hammock during Herräng Dance Camp in Sweden.
Jonathan grew up in New Zealand and discovered social dancing through a cèilidh, a Scottish social dance event, right at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Not long after, he found swing dancing, and what started as curiosity eventually led him across Europe and into a new life in London.
We talk about:
• Jonathan's first social dance experience at a cèilidh in New Zealand
• Learning swing dancing during the COVID years
• Moving from New Zealand to London for dance
• Movement on the dance floor and how space shapes a dance
• Why swing dance can be seen as a dance of constraints
• Dancing until sunrise and making friends at Herräng
• Connecting with live musicians while dancing
• Why everyone should feel welcome to ask someone to dance
This episode might resonate with you if you've ever felt nervous asking someone to dance or found yourself chasing those rare moments when everything clicks and you stop thinking.
Jonathan's story is a reminder that dancing is not only about what happens on the dance floor. Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen in between. Over a swim after an all-night social.

How do you know when a room is truly swinging?
In this episode, I sit down with jazz guitarist Alexander Brott, a Stockholm-based musician whose journey has taken him from Sweden to New York and back again.
He started playing at Chicago Swing Dance Studio at 19 y.o. - and that was just the beginning.
We talk about:
• Why Alexander started playing music and why he still wakes up wanting to play every day
• How New York shaped his musical identity
• What playing for dancers taught him about rhythm, groove, and presence
• The unique relationship between dancers and musicians
• Reading the energy of a room and adapting in the moment
• Jazz as a collective art form and the idea of serving something bigger than yourself together.
Alexander speaks openly about learning, humility, and how some of the most important musical lessons came from watching dancers respond in real time.
If you have ever felt curious about what musicians experience from the bandstand, this episode offers a gentle look behind the music stand. It is a reminder that social dancing is not only about individual expression, but also about creating something together.

What keeps you coming back to dance, year after year?
Recorded in the quiet late evening magic of Herräng Dance Camp, this conversation is with Alexej Schmidt, a social dancer whose journey has taken him from Russia to the Dominican Republic, Sweden, Germany and France.

What keeps someone coming back to the dance floor for more than two decades?
In this episode, I sit down with Sean Cedric Bischofberger lig during Herräng Dance Camp in Sweden.
We talk in a quiet moment between classes, social dancing, and waving at Sean's friends passing by.
Sean grew up around dancers, spent every summer at Herräng, and eventually found his own way into dancing thanks to a very persistent Chester Whitmore. What keeps him here today is not competition or achievement. It's friendship, joy, and feeling connected to people.
We talk about:
• Growing up at Herräng Dance Camp• How Chester Whitmore got Sean into dancing• Why friendships are the biggest reason he still dances• Dancing while travelling and discovering scenes through Swing Calendar• How lighting shapes the feeling of a dance space• Dance floor etiquette, hygiene, and helping partners feel comfortable
This episode might resonate with you if you have ever wondered why you keep coming back to social dancing year after year. Not because of the steps but because of the people.

Wed, 19 Aug 2026 - 15min - 171 - #165 Not having time to make jokes - with Maka Yavelic | Herräng Dance Camp
Have you ever wondered if where you stand on the dance floor changes how you experience the music?
In this episode, I sit down with Maka, a Lindy Hop teacher, musician, DJ, bandleader, and jam facilitator from Toulouse, France.
We recorded this conversation during Herräng Dance Camp, in the middle of a busy week filled with dancing, music, and late nights.
We talk about:
• Why dance offers a unique connection between body, emotions, culture, and music• The difference between playing music for dancers and for seated audiences• How lighting can shape the feeling of a performance without dancers even noticing it• Bringing new sounds, fresh ideas, and unexpected musical flavours into the swing scene• What really matters at the end of a dance• Why beginners should not be afraid to dance closer to the stage
There is something very honest and raw about this conversation. Maka speaks with humour and warmth while sharing observations about how dance communities work. From stories about metalheads hearing "only three songs" at swing events to reflections on musicality and belonging, this episode is full of small insights that stay with you.
If you've ever felt like you were standing at the back of the room, unsure if you belonged, this episode might gently encourage you to take a few steps forward.

Do you leave a little part of yourself in Herräng, and take a little piece of it home with you?
In this episode, I sit down with Marie Sörqvist, Camp Director of Herräng Dance Camp and a member of the Herräng community since the mid-1990s.
We recorded this conversation during the first weekend of Herräng Dance Camp 2026, surrounded by the everyday work, conversations, and small moments that make this place feel different from ordinary life.
Marie shares why people often come to Herräng for the dance but stay for the people, and why she believes (or, more accurately, hopes) that spending time here can make us better humans.
We talk about:
• Why Herräng became much more than a dance camp for her• Taking a piece of Herräng back into everyday life• Being the best version of yourself in a supportive community• What makes a good dancer and a good dance teacher• A beautiful sunset boat ride on the lake behind Folkets Hus the day before the camp has started
Are you also the best version of yourself when you're in Herräng?
For dancers who care about community.

What if dance is the language that helps us find home anywhere in the world?
In this episode, I sit down with Shehan - a dancer, community builder, and dance facilitator who was born in Sri Lanka, grew up in New Zealand, and eventually built a thriving swing dance scene on Reunion Island.
We recorded this conversation during his short visit to Stockholm, as part of his european tour - back in May.
This episode is about connection - to yourself, other people, and the history that lives inside social dancing. Shehan shares how dance became a way to communicate across cultures for him.
We talk about:
• Growing up in Sri Lanka and New Zealand
• Discovering Lindy Hop through a love of music and movement
• Building a dance scene from scratch on Réunion Island

• How lighting and atmosphere shape the feeling of a dance event
• Staying connected to the roots of a dance while developing your own voice
• The importance of community, resilience, and shared joy.If you've ever walked into a dance event without speaking the local language, wondered where you belong on the dance floor, or felt that special moment when dancing connected you to someone you had never met before, this episode will likely feel familiar.

Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 26min - 168 - #162 A few more beats to breathe - with Spela Sedej | Herräng Dance Camp
What if the best part of dancing is not the moves, but the connection?
In this episode, I sit down with Spela Sedej, a long-time member of the Herräng community, originally from Slovenia and deeply passionate about swing dancing and the people who make it meaningful.
We recorded this conversation during a quiet spring visit to Herräng, while we were both volunteering there for a weekend, far away from the busy festival weeks. The calm atmosphere gave us space to reflect on dancing, community, and what keeps bringing people back year after year.
This conversation is really about the human side of social dancing. About connection, trust, encouragement, and the small moments that stay with us long after a song ends.
We talk about:
Why Spela keeps returning to dancing after all these yearsHow social dancing creates connection between complete strangersWhat Spela has "soft knees" for (a hint: it's eatable) Dancing, hiking, and finding joy in unpredictable momentsA beautiful memory of dancing by moonlight, with candles and the moon reflecting in a lakeCreativity, encouragement, and making space for one another on the dance floorMany dancers know the feeling of wondering whether they are doing enough, taking too much space, or not enough space. This episode is a reminder that dancing does not have to be perfect. Sometimes the most meaningful dances are simply the ones where we feel accepted and encouraged to be ourselves.
This episode is for anyone who loves the people behind the dancing. And for anyone who wants to feel a little more at home on the dance floor.
This episode has been recorded in May in Herräng, Sweden. Thank you for the space, the music, and the people who make conversations like this possible.

Wed, 22 Jul 2026 - 28min - 167 - #161 It could happen to you - with Jacob Sznajdman | Salsa, Bachata, Tango, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Rumba, Orisha | Minor Swing
Have you ever had something go wrong and just had to begin again? ...I did, with this very episode. The recording randomly stopped without making it visible, meaning that we had to re-record. It was unexpected. A bit messy. But also honest. In fact, the first 4 minutes of the recording are pretty badquality due to background noises so you might enjoy our quite conversation recorded several weeeeeks after.
This episode is with Jacob, a social dancer who has explored many styles over the years. We talk about:
- Why dancing feels like a natural part of being human
- Exploring styles like salsa, bachata, tango, lindy and balboa and mizing them up on the social floor
- Jacob's experience in Cuba with rumba and Orisha dances- Small crushes in social dancing and how to handle them with care (thanks Hadeel to that question)
- Seeing each dance as a short and complete moment
There is a soft thread through this episode. Things do not need to be perfect to be real and to be enough.______________________________________________________

Hadeel grew up in Libya, in North Africa, where people dance whenever there is music, whenever there is a celebration. However, the dance there is often gender-separated. Even if you dance together, you do not touch each other.
How does coming from this culture affect Hadeel in her partner dancing? Well, listen in to find out ;)
In this episode, I talk with Hadeel during Minor Swing, in the middle of a busy dance weekend filled with music, classes, and people passing through the room.
This conversation is about how culture shapes the body, and how dancing can slowly become a place of freedom. It is about learning to follow without losing yourself. And about being a person who may dance as a follower, but still carries a strong leader energy inside.
We talk about:
growing up with gender-separated dance culture in Libyastarting Lindy Hop as an adultlearning to feel safe in partner dancinghow close embrace can feel different in different danceslighting, comfort, and what helps people relax on the dance floorThis episode may speak to you if you have ever felt unsure in partner dance. Wed, 04 Mar 2026 - 25min - 151 - #145 Dancing with social anxiety - with Raya Bouslah | Bluesila and The Snowball | Blues and lindy in Tallinn
Here we are in Stockholm talking with Raya, who is based in Tallinn. We have shared a warm, honest conversation with Raya Bouslah: born in Tunisia, now building a dancing life in Estonia, and finding her way across lindy hop and blues.
Raya started right before Covid and never stopped (well, apart from when the Covid was in its bloom). She talks about how dancing helps her stay sane and how social dance became a special way to meet people and bond. She gives a shout‑out to Rostom, who first nudged her into the scene. We also talk openly about social anxiety: the first class felt great until the moment everyone was asked to grab a partner, then everything tightened. She stayed anyway. Which she reflects on as being a great way of moving through ansxiety. Classes being in Estonian sometimes felt alienating, yet social dancing opened a different part of her brain, almost like a contract of safe space.
We look at human connection on the dance floor and how often it gets sexualised, then turn toward the kind of connection that feels respectful, joyful, and clear. Raya shares memories from Bluesila and leaves thoughtful advice about finding your own language of dancing.

Tue, 17 Feb 2026 - 22min - 150 - #144 Stop overthinking and being fully present when dancing - with Lindsey Ngo & Krystel Chevallier | Jurassic Bal & Boogie Down South | Swing scene in Australia
Here we are at Snowball in Stockholm, sitting with Lindsey Ngo and Krystel Chevallier for an opposite of a small-talk. We had an open-hearted conversation about how swing dancing can become a place of belonging.
Krystel shares how she began dancing balboa ten years ago in Australia and how the dance community stepped into her life at a moment when she felt alone after her divorce. Dancing became the thing that stopped her mind from overthinking, the thing that made her feel alone. She talks about the partnership side of swing dancing, the joy of building Jurassic Bal event, and the sweet story of her future life partner taking a photo of her at her first dance event, in a moment of pure joy and that he later printed for her.
Lindsey came to Australia from the USA ten years ago and found her way into dancing six years back. She now helps run a small but warm local scene of about fifty dancers. For her, dancing began with loving the music as a kid, and it is the moment when she feels fully present. She shares a beautiful memory from a no shoe event, dancing softly to the music of Jessie Gordon and Mark Turner, in a room so quiet it felt almost magical.
They both share inspiring tips & stories, and answer Kristyna’s question from the previous episode about their very first memories of dancing swing.

Tue, 03 Feb 2026 - 28min - 149 - #143 Feeling normal when dancing after getting a diagnose - with Kristýna Krejzlová | The Snowball | Blues scene in Brno
Here we are at Snowball in Stockholm, finally sitting down to record this long-awaited episode with Kristýna Krejzlová.
Kristýna is a swing and blues dancer from Brno in the Czech Republic, a growing teacher, and a fresh trombone player who is falling even deeper in love with the music and community around these dances.
She shares how discovering Lindy Hop just weeks after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis gave her one hour every week where she felt “normal” and fully alive again - and how dance still helps her stay active, present, and connected. We talk about feeling most yourself on the dance floor, blues rooms, secret Herräng parties with dim lights and colorful dots on the ceiling, and why “never stop dancing” might be the best advice of all.
Kristýna also reflects on sensitivity and that “sixth sense” dancers develop, plus how the Brno scene works to honor the roots of the dance through culture-focused teaching, talks, and even a little dance library.
And, of course, she passes on a beautiful chain question for the next guest: what is your very first memory of dancing Lindy Hop, blues, or another swing dance? What's yours?

Mon, 19 Jan 2026 - 13min - 148 - #142 Dance as a practice in taking up more space - with Mattias Dahl & Jessica Malmberg | The Snowball | Lindy hop
Here we are having a relaxed chat with Mattias Dahl & Jessica Malmberg — a warm, funny, and honest conversation about how dancing can change a life.
Mattias shares how he’d been convinced his whole life that he couldn’t dance (because he was a drummer… apparently the Swedish dansband culture has "rules" on that), and Jessica opens up about being very shy — until August 16th, 2009, when they walked into their first dance class and everything shifted.
We talk about dance as therapy: joy, community, and something that’s good for both body and brain — and for Jessica, a way to be closer to the music she loves. We also explore dancing as a practice in taking up space, and what it’s like to step out of an immersive place where you truly feel you belong (Herräng comes up as an example).
Plus: their grounded advice — listen to your own limits, and don’t chase levels and titles.

Here we are sitting at The Snowball festival in Stockholm, and having a relaxed chat with Jennifer Thompson (from Texas) - a warm and thoughtful chat about why we dance.
Jenn shares how she started Lindy Hop in 2014, how dancing became a way to connect with people and cultures without words, and why dancing feels like a universal language even when you don’t share the same mother tongue.
We also explore “light” as more than just a spotlight: as a metaphor for what dance illuminates in us, and how it can “light up your life.”
Plus: Jenn’s advice to fellow dancers: take the chances (classes, auditions, competitions, grants).

This week we have had a chat with Carl, who works as an Editor in Chief for Osqledaren magazine of the KTH Student Union. The focus of this episode has been Stockholm - during day and nighttime, as always - with a very gentle, almost unnoticeable, tint of politics.
Some of the points we have touched upon:

💡Reasons for why Stockholm does not have nightlife (if that is the case)

Our conversation is rich with thoughts and self-reflections on things like:
💡 Public transport in Mexico being coupled with crime
💡 Blivande as a centre for different types of creators

Take a listen to our conversation with Hannes, who I have met through KTH university, or some of the welcoming events, to be precise. He is from the Southern Germany, from a little village of 1000 inhabitants, now studying Masters in Architecture in Stockholm.
For him a city is overwhelming, but also a place to explore the unexpected. It is about exploration. While people act like catalysts for the city, according to Hannes, adding to the city through their presence and their will of living in a city.
Some of the things we talked about:
💡 Ghost town city during the summer (guess which one?)
💡 Human beings adapting to circumstances
💡 University campus in Mexico with high fences
💡 No Uber drivers when it rains in Monterrey
💡Experience of the city as a cyclist
Question from Hannes to the next guest (you as a listener can respond to it via Spotify too!):
❓Let’s pretend you are in the city that lost electricity and you are standing in the middle of the street / plaza and there is not light at all, you can hear people freaking out, you have no flash with you - what is your reaction, your ultimate plan? 💡Water reflections multiplying the amount of light
💡Spooky Gamla Stan
Question from Isabel to the next guest (you as a listener can respond to it via Spotify too!):

Some of the points we will discuss:
💡Bringing different perspectives together & clashing at times
💡Why doing things is essential to the life in Sweden?
💡People letting go who they are during daytime at night
💡Why don't we use daytime light scenarios at nighttime?

This episode is not an informative one whatsoever! BUT it is an exciting one (for me at least) as here:
💡 I share some of the key thoughts I have identified from the previous 99 episodes
💡 I explain the updated format of the next season!
It is me who sets a question for the next guest of the 101 episode (which I have forgotten to read out when recording this episode, ops).
The question is:
❓ How do stories that we tell to each other shape our shared perception of the city?

Breaking Boundaries.

Victória is a lighting designer who we have been studying together with at KTH in Stockholm and now she is working in Lisbon (this is an update since we have recorded this episode a month ago!).
We have been talking about freedom and a sense of diversity, about being an agent of change and how this becomes possible only as a collective process. We have been discussing the relationship between lighting and a sense of safety at night, mentioning that is it not only about the light but also about people and their presence.

Thu, 15 Jul 2021 - 24min - 95 - Emily Tucker - on gloom and show
This episode raises questions and invites for reflection, I feel. We have been talking with Emily on a warm sunny day (outdoor, hence some sudden noises) about openness and subcultures of certain cities, sensations of being an outsider as opposed to that of self-acceptance.
Here we will talk a little about Italy (interesting, as the previous episode in Russian also mentioned this country too), people dancing on the square and dimmer places appearing more calming as one focuses on less things. Enjoy.

Thu, 08 Jul 2021 - 17min - 94 -

Thu, 01 Jul 2021 - 33min - 93 - Amanda Peters - on coffee and cafés
Amanda describes herself as a coffee nerd so expect yourself to grab some coffee during or at least after listening to this episode. We will be talking about creating vibes by interacting with people, creating space for those who, perhaps want to be by themselves but around others.
I feel like this episode captures the essence of Stockholm in its theme and pace, if it is possible at all. I bet the next time you enter a bus you will say hi to the driver - let me know how it goes.

Thu, 24 Jun 2021 - 27min - 92 -

Thu, 17 Jun 2021 - 32min - 91 - Cody Torgersrud - on fetishisation of a city concept and charm
Cody is a half Californian, half Swedish lighting and interior designer, observer, appreciator, a fan of a city. I really liked his comment that artificial lighting re-maps the city at night. Would you relate to that? In this conversation we will be describing Stockholm and California using the metaphors I would never have thought of. Stureplan in particular was discussed in terms of lighting strategy that could be reimagined to bring more value to Stockholm.

Thu, 10 Jun 2021 - 34min - 90 -
Thu, 03 Jun 2021 - 28min - 89 - Eftychia Stamataki - on connection between dark and quiet
Eftychia was born and raised in Athens, studied in Lund and then moved to Stockholm to work in the ACC. She sees cities as living organisms that require networks, caring and Vitamin D. We discuss light pollution and appreciation of patches of darkness, like the ones in Djurgården. Have you been there?
If you enjoy looking at the stars, you might find some thoughts to relate to in our conversation. What does it take to have a feeling of being hugged by a city? What is it that one would miss from Greece when living in Sweden? (No, not the food and not the sun)

Thu, 20 May 2021 - 24min - 87 - Nicole Arthur and Tatiana Bodnar - on Lappis and flukes
This conversation took place at Lappis (student campus area), where Tatiana and Nicole have started Fluke - an initiative aiming at engaging the community and activating spaces. Their project is about being visible and giving voice to people. Co-existence of differences, trigger material, American suburbs, street pop-ups and responsive art installations — these are some of the things we are going to talk about.
I like how this conversation was evolving around Lappis, quite a special area of Stockholm that has its own vibe, which makes it a space that many students feel the way the want to feel. Have you been at Lappis? What is your impression of it?

Thu, 06 May 2021 - 33min - 85 - Nada Madhoon - on living in a car and city controlling your schedule
Nada grew up in Saudi Arabia. Her professional life has been connected with design from different aspects of in - interior design, illustration, building performance and lighting. For Nada cities are modes of living, varying from one city to another. Istanbul would be a social hub, Kuala Lumpur - all about fashion (do you relate to that comment?) and a mix of cultures, while Saudi is a city observed from indoors, it being a building or a car.
Nada values cities that communicate with its citizens. We talked about the lighting quite a bit (as it is an interest we share) and Nada will comment on nightlife having a different personality. SHe shares her observation of Stockholm imposing a schedule on its users where the norm is to go to bed early and wake up early. If you live in Stockholm, do you feel like it is taking away from your freedom in any way?
Thu, 29 Apr 2021 - 30min - 84 -

Thu, 22 Apr 2021 - 26min - 83 - Cristina Mordeglia - on commercial lights and city as a toolkit
Cristina is studying Architectural Lighting Design (together with me) at KTH in Sweden and before has been studying in Italy, China and Japan. She perceives a city as a toolkit that is used differently by citizens. Cristina describes herself as a night owl, having a different schedule leaving her to feel a part of a group when she aligns to other citizens time-wise. There is a strong connection to nature that is going through this episode and a feeling of appreciation of the context, whatever it is. In the end we also talk a little about circadian rhythm and the pleasure of seeing the stars.
Thu, 15 Apr 2021 - 29min - 82 -

Thu, 08 Apr 2021 - 31min - 81 - Kirsten Hinder - on restoration spaces, highs and lows
Kirsten has a passion for contemporary art and architecture, people and resilience, which she addresses through artwell.se. Multi-sensory experience, individual sustainability and restoration spaces would be the key words of this episode.
Coming from a landlocked part of Toronto, having a connection to the water is an important part of the city for Kirsten, with the nature at the door step and cultural diversity, that she adds to Stockholm, representing an international approach. Seeing a sky as opposed to the intense cool lighting is what she enjoys living in the suburb of Stockholm.
Watch out for the announcements of the Clubhouse rooms - Kirsten and I will host a discussion next week, I will share the date & time with you in advance via Instagram.

Thu, 01 Apr 2021 - 25min - 80 -

Thu, 25 Mar 2021 - 29min - 79 - Iris Molendijk - on dimmed down city and slow strolling
Iris is a lighting designer from the Netherlands who grew up in the countryside and this close connection to nature (and water, in particular) comes through the whole conversation. She sees herself as a slow passenger, noticing small details in a city, taking the time to stop and appreciate, sometimes unintentionally causing other curious people to stop too. Iris feels like Stockholm is a city that is lit in a way that makes people feel comfortable at night. However, the ideal night she would spend in a completely dark (or dimmed down) city that she imagined to be a case study in observing how little light we actually need. Being a lighting designer, she has also suggested two other ideal night options, strengthening the point of the need for choice and flexibility. If you fancy joining us for the conversation on the consequences/opportunities of having a completely dark city, join us at 19:30 (Stockholm, CET) tonight, March 17! https://www.joinclubhouse.com/event/MO6byy07 JOIN LIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH PODCAST GUESTS (that’s new!) https://www.joinclubhouse.com/club/a-city-for-you Support my project by sharing a word | Leave a comment https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/gorozhanin-горожанин/id1476738623 Or become a Patron https://www.patreon.com/gorozhanin
