RHLSTP Book Club 45 - Ashes to Admin. Richard talks to Evie King (if that is her real name) about her new book about her council job of organising funerals for people who don’t have the means to pay for them. It’s a surprisingly affecting story about a woman doing a job you’ve never thought about, much more fastidiously and empathetically than is required and a celebration of life and a treatise on death, as well as being full of intrigue, mystery and humour. They discuss why murderers haven’t thought it through, how even those who have done bad things deserve a dignified send off, why you need a strong stomach for this job and how your life can be affected and changed by someone who you never met, who is no longer alive. It’s a strong recommend for this excellent book which hopefully will one day be a TV series. But who will play Evie? And who will play the dead suspected paedo? (Yeah, the second question is easier to answer than the first).

It’s an incredible guest to start the new series, making his first appearance in almost 10 years, Stephen Merchant. RHLSTP Book Club 41 - Love and Let Die- Richard talks to author John Higgs about his fascinating book linking the stories of the Beatles and James Bond, who coincidentally appears in the world on the same day in October 1962. RHLSTP Book Club 23 - Murder at Crime Manor - Richard talks to comedian and actor about this hilarious and surprisingly gripping novel (badly) written by his comedy alter-ego Martin Fishback. First though there is a real life mystery to try and solve. Then Fergus explains how the character of Fishback was born and how in turn Fishback’s character of Detective Roger LeCarre came to life and find out about whether Fergus was nervous about turning an internet hit into a full blown novel. We also get to hear a bit of the book read out by Fishback and hear about the excellent TV pilot for the character and how Rich destroyed the dreams of two young comedians with a harsh dose of realism.

Plus they talk about how many Kit Kats are made every month and how it would be better to invent a chocolate bar than write books, the two or more schisms that have been created by scones and the skill required to read an audiobook. Rich rudely recommends a totally different book and Fergus also tells us about what he’s been reading.

RETRO RHLSTP #50 A Fan Who’s Won a Competition -It’s the last show in series 7 and there’s an end of term atmosphere and a lot of good natured heckling from a slightly inebriated crowd. Richard’s final guest is Peter Dickson impersonator and product of 1988, Joe Lycett. The podcast largely turns into the vehicle for a RHLSTP clips show as Joe quizzes Richard about his favourite and least favourite guests and what the future might hold for the valuable RHLSTP franchise.

RETRO RHLSTP #46 Romesh Ranganathan -Richard has a controversial theory about the recent FIFA controversy and gets paid by a man to call him a fucking idiot to his face before introducing former maths teacher and toilet crier Romesh Ranganathan to the stage of Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre.

In possibly the longest RHLSTP they discuss the problems of trying to procure adequate vegan cheese, cost analysis of airline food, whether a lazy eye is really a trademark and what it would take to get Romesh to have a tattoo of Richard on his arm. Find out how you can break your penis and what to do if you then get some jalfrezi on it. Ramesh also has to answer the cash for questions that Richard forgot to ask Emma Kennedy. It goes on for a very long time and a lot of it is about babies, but remember you can stop listening any time you like, unlike the poor captives in the theatre.
