Shannon shares her views on the top 10 things our pets want us to know

1. Grief isn’t a tribute. Please love again. Save a life, heal your hearts together. Of course I can’t be replaced. Loving another soul never replaces mine. We never leave you, and you’re not abandoning us when you move. We are everywhere, not in the ground or a container. We can always see, hear and feel you. Always.

2. Souls live on regardless of human belief systems. It’s the same as the sun setting and rising, your belief isn’t required...the sun shines regardless. Souls have unlimited spiritual passports that aren’t limited by human timelines or geography. So yes your childhood pets know your current ones, same as human souls not needing to meet in the physical realm.

3. Please stop telling our sad stories and calling us old or sick. Words are energy and have the power to heal or infect. Let us move on from our painful pasts. 

4. Please take care of yourself we worry like good parents do. We have to live your life choices. If you’re in a toxic relationship, so are we. Be honest with yourself about how your choices affect us pets. 

5. CLEAR THE AIR! STOP Smoking. Vaping. We need and deserve to breathe clean air. Be mindful of your energy and habits, it’s all transferring to us.

6. Clean the water and food bowls! Fill them with fresh, cool filtered water (even though we drink from toilet and eat poop, we still need clean water and bowls.)

7. Ditch the kibble, it’s hard on our digestive systems. Educate yourself on pet nutrition beyond what vets say. Fresh is always better. Wet food over dry. Just because we eat something doesn’t mean we like it, it means we’re hungry. 

8. GO GREEN! Ditch the harsh chemicals. Lysol, Clorox, bleaches and heavy scents (many essential oils too) are killing us. Our senses are much stronger than yours and those things are making us sick. 

9. Teach ALL kids pet manners. It’s never cute to watch an animal be forced to tolerate rude kids. Stop asking us to tolerate pain and disrespect from adults and kids who lack boundaries. Advocate for us and say “NO” sometimes to others petting us.

Hurricane Prep and Evacuation Tips -From the Pinellas County web page

Evacuating close to home, but outside of the hazard area is the best option.

Plan on bringing your pet with you. Never leave your pet behind in harm’s way.

Plan to stay outside of evacuation areas. 

Consider staying with family, friends or in a hotel or motel.

Plan ahead for your pet by identifying pet-friendly accommodations ahead of a storm and store their contact information in your phone to make reservations quickly.

Microchip your pet in case you get separated and keep your contact information updated with the vendor.

Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date, their county license is valid and contains the pet’s microchip information, if applicable.

Take a photo of you and your pet together. Keep it with your important documents and on your phone.

Build a pet emergency kit from the list provided below

If you are ordered to evacuate, take your pets with you. Do not leave them behind.

Keep your pets on a leash or in a carrier.

Wherever you end up sheltering during a storm or disaster, make sure your destination is pet friendly. Use your favorite search engine to research accommodations early and include the search term “pet friendly.” If you don’t use technology, call your friends or your vet to get recommendations about pet-friendly accommodations.

Dogs can be escape artists. Just ask anyone who owns a Husky. When your dog goes missing or you find a dog, the pet loving Super Heroes at Lost And Found Pets Of Pinellas County, a Facebook page, are ready to help. Since 2009, founder Suzi Dill has be giving up her free time to tirelessly post and share information on lost and found dogs. With 15 -25 posts per day, including back and forth DMs with pet owners and pet finders, it's a big job. Recently PJ Martin has stepped in to help. Despite humble beginnings and the fact that it's a 100% volunteer endeavor, the page has grown to over 55 thousand followers and has helped countless pets find their way home.
