Player-managers aren't really a thing in football anymore. Back in the mid-1990s, when on the hunt for a new boss, Manchester City promoted tough-tackling midfielder Peter Reid to the dugout while he was still a member of the first team squad. Despite being very much a Scotsman, Willie Donachie began life as a footballer in England with Manchester City. He came through the ranks a tough-tackling, no-nonsense defender, eventually breaking into the team in 1970 - having been around the first team set-up since the late 1960s. Brought in to help Manchester City's promotion push from the third tier in November 1998, Gareth Taylor found himself in the midst of a third play-off final of his career at Wembley. Having lost twice already, Taylor came off the bench with the Blues 1-0 down in the closing stages - and he must have felt it was going to be three on run when Gillingham scored their second moments later. A quick YouTube search will find one of the worst moments of Jamie Pollock's football career. With City battling to stay in Division One in the penultimate game of 1997-98, he scored what's been dubbed "the best own goal of all time" - intercepting a pass and heading the ball over his teammate in goal, Martyn Margetson. Each week of the season goes by knowing that you're going to be understudy to the club's first choice - but that you have to be in top form and your best shape because you might be needed at a moment's notice. You often hear players described as a "utility player" - someone who can fill in and do a job when the main left back or the regular right winger isn't available. With squad football, it's less of a problem - but back in the 1960s and 1970s, it was more common. Dave Connor made 141 appearances for City and, in that time, he played in every position on the field, apart from goalkeeper. There are few players who experience two very different eras at clubs, but Ian Bishop is someone who can say they've seen opposing ends of the Manchester City scale. When he first arrived, in 1989, he enjoyed a 5-1 win over rivals Manchester United at Maine Road - before being sold to West Ham after just three months. In the late 1990s, Manchester City were in crisis. Following relegation from the Premier League in 1996, they were unable to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt. Following Alan Ball's resignation, Steve Coppell, Phil Neal, and Asa Hartford all briefly held the position of manager. In December 1996, City appointed Frank Clark to try and halt the slide down the leagues. Having played against Roberto Mancini's Manchester City in the Europa League at the beginning of the 2010-11 season, the manager went on to sign Costel Pantilimon for the start of 2011-12, initially on loan. Signed from Bury in 1966, Bell went on to make almost 500 appearances for the Blues in a 13-year period. With only 18-months at Manchester City, Colin Hendry is one of the players that fans wish they could have seen more of. Signed from Blackburn in 1989, he moved back to Ewood Park less than two years later after he fell out of manager Peter Reid's plans. With Blackburn, he'd go on to become a Premier League winner. When Kevin Keegan needed to freshen his squad up in the January transfer window of 2005, he brought in a pacy winger from Atletico Madrid on a half-season loan. Kiki Musampa impressed, with some key goals in the run-in that almost saw the team qualify for the UEFA Cup, under new manager Stuart Pearce. Musampa returned for 2005-06 on a season-long loan. Throughout the 1990s, there was a batch of Manchester City graduates who made their way into the first team that fans were able to feel a connection to, largely because they were from the local area. A pair of brothers, Ian and David Brightwell, were in that bracket. When Manchester City returned to the Premier League under Kevin Keegan, the manager wanted somebody who would be able to lead the line and score the goals that wouldn't just keep his side in the top flight - but someone who would secure them a top half finish. The boss broke the club's record transfer to bring in centre-forward Nicolas Anelka, after he'd been on a loan spell at Liverpool the year before. Often seen as a Premier League journeyman, Michael Brown started his career in England with Manchester City, coming through the ranks in the mid-1990s. He is one of a handful of players to have been sent off on their debut for the club, ten minutes after coming off the bench against QPR in 1995. If you were to ask Manchester City fans to name the most ill-disciplined player of the last 20 years, there is a strong chance they'd come up with the name Danny Tiatto. A tough-tackling defender or midfielder, the Australian was known to dance close to the line - often crossing it into red card territory. Every club has their Mr. Dependable. For Manchester City in the late 1990s, that man was Gerard Wiekens. He excelled in the club's 1999 promotion season, before settling in comfortably at either centre-back or centre-midfield in the team that won back-to-back promotions to the Premier League. It culminated in perhaps his highlight at Maine Road - the final Manchester derby there, as he marked his fellow countryman Ruud van Nistelrooy out of the game. It was a whirlwind start for Gary Owen at Manchester City. His escalation from being a fan of the club and playing in schools football to representing the Blues at Maine Road and becoming a first team regular was swift. Mention the name of goalkeeper David James to any football fan and there's one incident that nearly always crops up in conversation. Chasing a winning goal on the final day in 2005, rookie manager Stuart Pearce sent his goalkeeper outfield and played him as a centre-forward. Stan Horne joined Manchester City in the 1960s, to play his part in the great Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison team. In 1968, he won the First Division title with the club - but hadn't played enough games to automatically qualify for a medal. In 2020, the Football League announced they were falling into line with the Premier League by reducing the threshold to five games, meaning Horne would now get his honour - more than 50 years after winning the title. Some goals will never be forgotten. Manchester City's equaliser at Wembley in the Division Two play-off final in 1999 is one that goes down as perhaps the most important in the club's history, as Paul Dickov's strike in the 95th minute saw the Blues claw back from 2-0 down to draw. Forever a cult hero at City, the feisty Scot had two spells with the club - rejoining in 2006, as a much-changed City battled for Premier League survival. One of Manchester City's long list of academy graduates, Leon Mike made several first team appearances for the Blues under Kevin Keegan - however, his playing time was limited due to the impact of Shaun Goater and Paulo Wanchope. Signed on a free transfer from Leeds, Danny Mills played at right-back for Kevin Keegan and Stuart Pearce's Manchester City until the emergence of youngster Micah Richards. Often criticised by the fans, Mills saw out his deal with the Blues until he retired in 2009, following unsuccessful loan spells. One of Kevin Keegan's first signings at Manchester City was Eyal Berkovic. The playmaker was part of the manager's exciting, attacking team that went on to win the Division One title in 2002 - scoring more than 100 goals in the process. Berkovic was also key to City's European qualification the following season, forming a brilliant relationship with the team's other attacking players. When in need of some midfield security in the mid-1990s - to stave off the threat of relegation - former City manager Brian Horton turned to a holding midfielder from Germany. Steffen Karl arrived on a short loan in 1994 from Borussia Dortmund, joining his fellow German Uwe Rosler at Maine Road. The loan wasn't made permanent and so Karl moved on after a handful of games - and one goal, a winner against Southampton at The Dell. The story of Nicky Weaver's Manchester City career couldn't be more of a rollercoaster. From the highs of saving penalties in the Division Two play-off final in his first season, to the lows of almost having to retire with a very serious knee injury just over three years later, Weaver's time was never dull. An experimental and career-saving operation was to follow, before he returned to first team action in 2006 - fighting to take the number one jersey back. For many Manchester City fans, Joey Barton is the man who was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez in the club's 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers, when Roberto Mancini's side went on to snatch the Premier League title in 2012. As Manchester City battled against relegation from the Premier League in 2001, Joe Royle sought to add more firepower to his squad. From Leeds United, in came Darren Huckerby - a pacy centre-forward with an eye for a goal. Injury meant he wasn't able to play a crucial role in that end of season fight, but he came back better than before as Kevin Keegan's new-look City romped to the Division One title in 2001-02. When Joe Royle wanted to freshen up his goalkeeping options in the 2000-01 season, he turned to someone who had been making waves at Stockport County. Carlo Nash had played well in his appearances against the Blues and he was brought in to rival Nicky Weaver for the number one jersey at Maine Road. However, as City were relegated to and then promoted from Division One, Nash found himself as the club's number two - behind veteran goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
