A Cozy Christmas Podcast

Hello and welcome to the Cozy Christmas Podcast! Today's episode is a joint venture with my other podcast, The Bookshelf Odyssey, and I will be interviewing author Kim Harrington. She has a brand new book out just in time for the Christmas season called "A Killer for Christmas". It's described as mashup of a Hallmark movie, a cozy mystery, and murder! In the interview we talk about her writing journey, how she went from avid reader to a writer, and how an off-hand comment made by her husband inspired her to make the transition from YA author to writing for adults! Plus we dig into her favorite Christmas memories, traditions and more!

We made it to the 'Ber months! In today's episode of a Cozy Christmas Podcast, I'll tell you the story of a saint I learned about who LITERALLY saved Christmas. We'll find out about St. Aphrodisius, and his connection to Christmas, and what lessons we can learn from his life. And then I read you another old, cozy, Christmas story called "The Tell-Tale Tile" by Olive Thorne Miller. Now, don't let the title's allusion to an Edgar Allan Poe story frighten you - this story is definetly a cozy one! It tells the story of old Miss Bennett, who gives out of her poverty to a neighbor. What impact will that have on her, especially as she fears going to the poor house? Well, tune in to find out!

Hello, and Merry Christmas everyone! So it's been awhile... but I'm so glad to be back, bringing you all the cozy Christmas vibes and classic stories of our favorite holiday season.

In today's episode, I take a few minutes to share some family updates and tell you how our last Christmas went. Then, I offer a couple of book recommendations in the Cozy Christmas Book Corner before we settle in by the Christmas fire for a lovely old story called Christmas Under the Snow, by Olive Thorne Miller.

Today's tale is a classic story about a pioneer family on the prairie who find themselves snowed into their lonely log cabin just days before Christmas. With their father stranded in the village while gathering supplies, food running low, and winter's grip tightening around them, the family faces an uncertain holiday. Yet even in the harshest conditions, Christmas has a way of bringing hope, warmth, and unexpected blessings.

So grab a warm drink, settle into your favorite chair, and join me for this heartwarming Christmas tale!

Merry Christmas! We made it. It's the most wonderful day of the year: Christmas Eve. Today, I wanted to share a few thoughts about the year behind us, what this Christmas journey has meant to me, and of course, read a story with you. I'll be reading from Charles Dickens's script of his one-man performance of A Christmas Carol, sharing one of my favorite scenes of all, the Cratchit family Christmas. It's full of warmth, joy, and the kind of cheer that makes you want to pull your chair a little closer to the fire. So settle in, pour yourself something festive, and let's enjoy these quiet moments together.

Happy Christmas week, everyone! Is your shopping finished yet? Have you baked any good cookies? Today, I'm inviting you to pause for a moment and reflect on creativity, especially the beauty of bringing a handmade, home-crafted touch to Christmas. My guest is Elizabeth Duke, whose passion is teaching people how to stitch and craft in a mindful, intentional way. We talk about her career, how deliberate creativity can enrich our lives, and of course, all things Christmas. Along the way, I learn how a crafter's emotions can influence their stitching, discover the art of ice dyeing, and we share some of our favorite Christmas traditions.

Merry Christmas! Today I'm back to spend a little more time with Mrs. Claus, and yes, the Christmas vibes are cranked all the way up! I share some traditions and memories sent in by listeners, then review a delightful new book, What Would Mrs. Claus Do? by Pamela McColl and Lindsay Stewart. I read a few favorite quotes and offer my thoughts on both the book and Mrs. Claus herself. After that, we gather by the Christmas fire for a reading of the narrative poem "Goody Santa Claus"—with "Goody" being an old-fashioned way of saying "Mrs." I also dive into the life of the author of the poem, Katharine Lee Bates. She was an American author best known for penning the lyrics to America the Beautiful. When it first appeared, it helped give Mrs. Claus her own voice in Christmas literature. Wherever you find yourself this week, I hope you're able to slow down, stay cozy, and savor the joy of the Christmas season.

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is the lights! My guest today is new author Makennah Johnston, who has just published a wonderful children's story called "The McBrights":

"Every Christmas Eve, the McBrights dazzle from the branches of the Evergreen Tree in Henbrook's town square, warming hearts with their old-fashioned glow. This year, however, something isn't quite right. The McBrights are left in their storage box for longer than usual, and when they are finally unpacked, they find themselves for sale at an antique store!

They may be vintage, but their bulbs aren't burnt out yet. Bernie McBright is determined to get his family shining where they belong. Could the store's newest visitor be the spark the McBrights need to light up Christmas once more?"

I also recommend another children's Christmas book called The Candy Cane Forest by Lindsay Ann Fink. It's a charming and colorful story of how Santa's elves plant and grow one of my favorite Christmas treats - Candy canes! After that I wrap up with a few thoughts on the lights of Christmas, and what they mean to me.

Happy Thanksgiving Week, everyone! Today I'll be reading a Thanksgiving story titled "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen" by the legendary short story master O. Henry. It's a funny and thoughtful tale about two men bound by tradition… but I won't spoil anything!

After the story, I chat a bit about our own traditions and ask an important question: Is it okay for some traditions to come to an end? I also share a Christmas book recommendation and talk about Words Christmas Gave Us by Grace Tierney. You can listen to my interview with her in last week's episode!

Merry November everyone! I've got another jam-packed episode today! First of all, we circle back to last week's episode topic and I share some more information about the 1990's tv special, Merry Christmas George Bailey! Christmas Podcast Network roving reporter Tim Babb shares an exclusive interview with Jimmy Hawkins, the actor who played Tommy Bailey in the original It's a Wonderful Life film! He also produced the tv special that I spoke about in the last episode. Thank you so much Tim for sharing this with us!

Then we head up north and about as far east as we can go, to Newfoundland, Canada! We stop in to visit with Glen Warren, who is hard at work on this season of his podcast Season's Eatings. We talk about Christmas traditions, foods, movies, and more that can be found in Canada and especially Newfoundland! (And what's up with that extra half hour time zone difference?)

Warning: this episode might make you hungry!

Happy Halloween! Tonight or tomorrow little trick or treaters will be out getting candy... what a perfect time to listen another spooky Christmas story for Halloween! Tonight's tale is called "The Judge's House", by the master of horror Bram Stoker. The story seems simple enough - a college student in need of a quiet place to study, rents an old house that that belonged to a judge whose cruelty was renowned. While his malignant portrait oversees the room, the rats come out to play...

It may surprise you to learn that this tale was first published in a Christmas magazine in 1891. The Victorians, it seems, loved a good ghost story with their holiday cheer! I hope you find this story as delightfully chilling as I did while reading it for you.

It's Halloween Week on A Cozy Christmas Podcast, and I'm celebrating by reading another spooky but cozy Victorian Christmas tale. This week, I'm reading "A Strange Christmas Game" by Charlotte Riddell — A brother and sister inherit an old, possibly haunted house whose previous owner met a mysterious end. After several nights of strange noises echoing through the halls, they decide to stay up on Christmas Eve to uncover the truth — and what they discover is most definitely not Santa Claus...

Riddell wrote a perfect blend of cozy fireside storytelling and eerie suspense — the kind of story that will make you want to keep the lights on, but still smile at the warmth of a good old-fashioned ghostly yarn.

So grab a blanket, light a candle, and join me as we celebrate the spooky season, Victorian style! 👻🎄

Happy Spooky Month everyone! As the autumn weather finally arrives here in Iowa, I am in the mood to read some excellent Christmas ghost stories that are perfect for the Halloween season. Today's story is called Sir Hugo's Prayer by G. B. Burgin. It's a humorous tale of the ghostly Sir Hugo and his wife who have been forced to haunt the family grounds. Then one Christmas Eve, a young lady arrives with two potential suitors who are seeking to win her affection. Will Sir Hugo be able to lend a (ghostly) helping hand?

Also, I take a very quick look at the Saint behind the song "Good King Wenceslas" - which has also has a connection to our story. Who knew the name "Wenceslas" would be so hard to pronounce...

I hope you enjoy today's funny and festive and slightly spooky story!

In today's episode, I interview author John Holley about his new Christmas book "This Christmas". It tells the story of Marie Downs, who is not only grieving the loss of her husband, but has also had to step in and take care of her grandkids. It's a book that might not seem as cozy as our usual tales, but it's a beautiful story full of Christmas hope. I talk with John about his book and some serious subject matter, but we also have a lot of fun talking about our favorite Christmas traditions, memories, and foods.

Find John Holley online: www.johnholley.com

"This Christmas" by John Holley: "Marie Downs lost her husband to cancer last Christmas. Eleven months later, she is grieving the loss of her husband when her drug-addicted daughter disappears in their small town, which is rife with opioid addiction. Marie becomes the caregiver for her two grandchildren as she engages in the dangerous search for her daughter. All the while, she drifts in and out of the memories of her beloved husband of over 40 years. When her daughter turns up in the intensive care unit clinging to life after an overdose, Marie is challenged to face her anger with her daughter and find hope in her life as it is now. This Christmas is a testament to faith in yourself, hope for others and the love of family."

In today's show, I'm interviewing author Natalie Bickel about her new children's Christmas book, The Christmas Clue. We talk about the best Children stories to read at Christmas time, as well as our Christmas memories, favorite movies and so much more.

I also share a listener memory about how he fell in love with his wife during Christmas time, and that leads me down memory lane to talk about how me and my wife started dating, sort of, at Christmas time.

(Note: During the interview, my audio is not the best - I'm not sure what was going on with my microphone, so hopefully it's not too distracting.)

We're going back to the theater today! And there's a mystery afoot...

What happens when the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Ebenezer Scrooge are thrown together? Find out in the new play that debuts today in NYC, A Sherlock Carol. My guest today is Mark Shanahan, he's the writer and director of the play. He comes from an extensive background in acting, writing and directing many plays both for the stage and radio. He stops by and we chat about his new play, the challenges of performing theater safely during a pandemic, and the power of stories - especially those by Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens.

Then, I read a Christmas mystery story by Thomas Hardy called "The Thieves Who Couldn't Stop Sneezing." It is a funny short story about a young man named Hubert who stumbles across some thieves planning to rob a nearby mansion. Find out what happens in this charming holiday tale.

Hello everyone! In today's episode I share a listener memory that's an emotional one. Fan of the show Katie shares her memory of spending Christmas 2010 with her niece who had leukemia.

After I share that, I give a few tips on how to celebrate the holidays after a loved one has passed away. This can be a difficult conversation, but it's something that many of us have experienced.

Then, author Ed Daly stops by to talk about his new work, The Christmas Book: The Ultimate Guide to Your Favorite Holiday. We talk his book, the origin and development of Christmas traditions, and of course our favorite Christmas books and stories. Check out the Cozy Christmas YouTube channel to see the November video in my Cozy Christmas Book Corner series to get my review of his book and a couple of others that I read last month.

Happy November everyone! And happy Christmas Podcast Day!

Have you ever wondered if a relative or friend might just be Santa Claus? Today I share a listener's memory of how his family member dressed up as Santa Claus one Christmas. His story reminds me of a Christmas tale that I read in the episode - "Old Father Christmas" by Juliana Horatia Ewing. It tells the story of two small children who think a local elderly man they meet near their house might just be Santa Claus.

There's a few other odds and ends packed away in the episode, and be sure to check out the Cozy Christmas YouTube channel to see Gracie and I give some Christmas gift ideas as we look through some Christmas catalogues.

Be sure to follow the hashtags #ChristmasPodcastDay and #ChristmasPods today as we kick off the holiday season in style.

The name's Claus... MRS. Claus...

Have you ever wondered what Mrs. Claus does all year while Santa prepares for Christmas? Well, according to a new books series by author Liz Ireland, she solves mysteries. In today's episode I interview Liz Ireland, and we talk about her excellent new Mrs. Claus cozy mystery series and of course there's lots of talk about our favorite books, Christmas, movies and memories.

After my chat with Liz, I read you another classic Christmas story, "Mr. Bluff's Experiences of the Holiday" written by Oliver Bell Bunce. It tells the story of Mr Bluff who dislikes holidays like Christmas. Will he, like many a Christmas protagonist before him, have a change of heart? Find out in today's story!

Happy October everyone! In today's episode I share a listener's memory from a cozy farm in Canada and he tells us about how his town welcomes Christmas. Then I head over to Portugal and share a couple of fun Christmas traditions the town of Braga has on Christmas eve. Finally, I read the essay Old Thoughts for Christmas by Christopher Morley. Published during the Christmas season after the Treaty of Versailles was signed, Morley ponders the gift of peace and the need for kindness after such a horrific world war - and finds that Christmas can bring these things to us.

And be sure to keep an eye out on the youtube channel this week as I'll be posting a video review of the book Mrs. Claus and the Santaland Slayings by Liz Ireland.

We've come to the final chapter of The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon! It's a tear jerker for sure... or is just me?

In this chapter, when Moppet is struck dangerously ill (as so frequently happens to children in Victorian literature), Sir John must come to terms with his love for the little girl. They are not sure whether Moppet will live or die, and then the children's mother shows up... and Sir John's life may never be the same again.

Grab some eggnog and box of kleenex... and enjoy this cozy Victorian Christmas story!

See you all in August!

Happy Christmas in July! Today, Bill from thevillagecollector.com stops by again to talk about how he's been celebrating Christmas in July on his website, and I ask him 10 questions about collecting Christmas villages. If you want to answer those questions too, you can head over to his website and click on The Village Cafe page. (Link is below!) I want to say hello to my listeners in Ireland - I've had an increase in listeners there, so please let me know about any interesting Irish Christmas traditions!

This is part three of The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon.

It's the Christmas holidays at Penlyon Place! In part three of the story, there are several Christmas meals and celebrations that Sir John, Danby, Miss Hawberk and the three children attend. Sir John and the youngest child Moppet continue to form a loving bond. These chapters overflow with Christmas cheer and is definitely worth making some hot chocolate while you listen.

In these chapters, we find out what happens on the first day that three children come to stay with Sir John Penlyon for Christmas. Will he further shut off his broken heart from them or will they charm their way through his gruff exterior?

Enjoy the second part of a heart warming Christmas tale!

Due to life being crazy and my inability to read a calendar correctly (long story, don't ask) I don't think I'm going to be able to get another regular episode out on Monday this week, but no worries, I will have part 3 of this story out next Friday. I'll also be taking a vacation at the end of July/early August, so there will be a couple weeks break.

Here's the Upcoming Schedule for the rest of Christmas in July and August (subject to change):

7/24 Part 3 of The Christmas Hirelings

7/26 Episode 47, Bill from thevillagecollector.com will be back, and other Christmas fun!

Welcome to a special bonus episode of A Cozy Christmas Podcast.

Today, I'll begin reading one of my favorite Christmas novellas, The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon.

Though it was published closer to the end of the Victorian period in 1894, it captures all the hallmarks of a Victorian story, overflowing with sentimentality - but there are some wonderful Christmasy scenes as well.

It tells the story of a lonely, gruff widower Sir John Penlyon as he spends Christmas with his friend Danby and his niece Adela. Danby points out how Christmas is dull without children around, and Sir John agrees. Danby quickly hatches a scheme to find some children to hire to bring into Sir John's lonely house. Will the children bring some much needed joy to Sir John's life?

In today's episode, we begin with the prologue that sets the story up, and then chapters 1-2 explain Sir John's backstory and why he has become so withdrawn and gruff. In next week's chapters, we will pick up where the prologue left off and find out what happens when the children arrive at Penlyon Place.

Enjoy!

Sina Skates, playwright from the Birmingham Children's Theater, is back on the show today and we're talking about keeping the magic of Christmas alive - 365! Well at least that's what we started talking about. As usual the conversation wanders - we talk about what's coming this Christmas at the BCT, how to get through the difficult Christmases, what keeps us in the mood for Christmas all year round, and all kinds of other topics. Sina wants to be the Christmas light in a dark world and she brings plenty of that to our episode today! Make yourself cozy and enjoy this interview!

I'll see you on Friday with the first of a 4 part story - The Christmas Hirelings, by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. There's a lot of fun coming this month in the podcast!

Hello everyone! This episode was supposed to be out last week but due to Graduations and crazy life stuff it got delayed until today.

Today's episode I talk about the book Christmas: A Biography, and then read you another story by Ellis Parker Butler.

In today's story Joanne is home from school for the Christmas holidays. She's hoping for a nice, relaxing rest but her next door neighbor and prankster Tommy Bassick might have something to say about that... Find out what happens to her on Christmas morning in this delightful and cozy Christmas story!

Merry Christmas - Today's episode will be an interview with Bill from thevillagecollector.com. You can also find him on the forums over at mymerrychristmas.com.

I love Christmas villages and I'm excited to have Bill back with us. In the interview we chat about his website and what will be going on there this year. We talk about some trends in collecting and his on going hobby of collecting the best videos of Christmas villages. Whether you are a collector or just an admirer of Christmas villages, you won't want to miss this episode!

Happy May! In today's episode, I share a new segment called "This (Christmas) Day in History"... we go back to Christmas 1990 and learn about the creation of the World Wide Web - is that the best Christmas present ever?

Then Gracie and I chat about her birthday, and then we play a Christmas Trivia Game - who do you think will win?

Finally, I read a Christmas story entitled, "The Canned Plum Pudding" by Ellis Parker Butler. Have you ever had a regifting experience that went horribly wrong? Let this story serve as a lesson for you, and think twice before you send that gift off to someone else.

The Long-Awaited, Over Due Easter Episode is here... and since the Eastern Orthodox Church apparently doesn't recognize Easter until May 2nd... I guess it's still early?

Anyway, in today's episode I have author and blogger Gina Dalfonzo on to talk about Dickens' The Life of Our Lord, and we end up chatting about A Tale of Two Cities... though I don't mention it in the podcast, I think Tale of Two Cities might qualify as an "Easter Carol" - a great story to read every year at Easter time!

I also finish reading The Life of Our Lord and offer up a new book recommendation: "Christmas: A Biography" by Judith Flanders.

"God rest ye murdered gentlemen let nothing you dismay..."

Can a murder mystery be cozy? It can when in the capable hands of author Vicki Delany and her cozy mystery series, The Year-Round Christmas Mystery series. We head to Canada for a wonderful chat about her books. Unfortunately Rudolph, NY, where the series is set and Christmas is celebrated year round, is NOT a real place... but a Christmas podcast host can dream, right? And besides, who wouldn't want to catch a sight of Santa in his swimsuit, am I right?.... Hello? Anyone? Just me?

After my talk with Vicki I read another selection from The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens and I have a serious moment and share some Easter meditations I've been thinking on lately. I also share another listener memory and talk about some Christmas snacks.

Grab your egg nog (yum!) and some marshmallow peeps (barf), it's a Christmas and Easter episode!

Happy Easter month, to those who celebrate! In today's episode I talk a little bit about Charles Dickens' gospel, The Life of Our Lord, that he wrote for his children. Since this is primarily a Christmas podcast, I read from his chapters about the birth and early life of Christ.

I also share a listener's thoughts about a different perspective on A Christmas Carol, give a book recommendation for this month's Cozy Christmas Book Corner, and I share a memory of mine that explains why the carol "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" has haunted my nightmares.

Winter is in full swing, and Grace and I have the giggles today. I ask her some Holly Jolly Christmas questions and they quickly spiral into moments of laughter as we're interrupted by her Teddy Bears, we try to figure out the names of Santa's reindeer, and I'm reminded how nice a kid she is when I ask her the question: if you could have any gift on your wishlist what would it be? Her answer surprised me!

I also share another listener memory from Rick, and how the song "Downtown" puts him in a Christmas mood, I recommend a book, and read the story "The Set of Poe" by George Ade.

Though I don't mention it in the episode, we just hit 30,000 downloads! Thank you THANK YOU for all who have been listening this past year. I'm overwhelmed and grateful for you all!

Welcome to the start of season 2!

In today's episode, I share with you what has been keeping me in the Christmas mood (hint: snow, cookies, and music); Then I share an email from our listener Rick who writes to tell about his favorite Christmas movies - and he has some shocking and very strict guidelines on what counts as a Christmas movie. Then, I read the Christmas chapter from Charles Dickens' first novel, The Pickwick Papers.

It's the final episode of the 2020 Christmas season, and we've got a full and fun episode ahead.

I read another great memory from our listener Rick... we learn that sometimes gift giving can be a fun, but complicated, process. Then I interview Manny, the host of the Feliz Christmas Merry Navidad podcast and we talk about his podcast, paying it forward, and the magic of Santa.

After that, Gracie and I talk about her Christmas and some of the Teddy Bears she got, a couple of snow storms we experienced, and a (Covid Safe) Christmas surprise trip we were able to take.

I wrap up the first season with some reflections and stats about the show. I am overwhelmed by how you the listeners responded to the show. The show ends with a reading of Susan Noyes Anderson's poem, "Christmas Past: The Afterglow" which is a fitting end to a wonderful Christmas season.

See you all in a couple of weeks for Season 2!

Look out everyone, it's a flood of books! In today's episode I look at two different Christmas traditions - Jólabókaflóð the Icelandic celebration of books at Christmas, and Epiphany, the holiday that commemorates the Magi's visit to the baby Jesus.

In the Jólabókaflóð segment, I participate in the Christmas Carol Book Tag prompt in which I answer 8 Christmas Carol inspired questions about books.

In the Epiphany segment, I read the account of the Magi from Matthew Chapter 2, and then I read a couple of poems by Cecil Frances Alexander: "Once in Royal David's City" and "The Adoration of the Wise Men". I take a few minutes to reflect on the lessons from the story of the Wise Men. I don't know how you are supposed to celebrate Epiphany, but I enjoyed putting this together.

Oh, and tucked in between the segments is a wonderful listener memory from Rick. I know you'll enjoy his story, and we are going to hear more from him in the future.

We have a tale of two musicians today in this 2nd part from yesterday's Cozy Christmas Music episode.

First up is singer/songwriter Lucas Morgan. He is 17yo high school student who has just made his first album, called "Get Your Christmas On". It was so fun talking to a young man who knows what he wants to do and is going after it with passion. We chat about his album, his favorite music, and Christmas! Keep an eye on this kid - I think he's going to do great things!

You can find his album on amazon or sample it on youtube.

Here is his website: https://lucashuntermorgan.wixsite.com/lucasmorganmusic

It's time to relax and take a deep breath and listen to music! Scott from the Jingle Jank podcast stops by to share some cozy Christmas songs and it will put you in the mood to stare out your window watching it snow all day...

Gracie and I get together to do a mad-lib version of a letter to Santa, and I surprise Gracie by telling her that I am going to mail it to Santa. You won't believe what she ends up asking Santa for Christmas.

Have yourself a Totally Rad Christmas, Dudes!

Today's guest is THE Gerry Davilla from A Totally Rad Christmas, and as you can tell right from the beginning, this episode is far out and gnarly and... all those other 1980's terms I can't remember. It begins with my very worst impression of one of my very favorite podcasters... and it derails from there... as you'll hear in the interview, I left all the bloopers in. :-)

Gerry and I get together and we laughed a lot, we told stories, we talked about movies, about the 80's, we had some moments of loud laughter and deep thoughts about our families and a little bit about faith, too. Come sit with us by the cozy Christmas fire, and enjoy today's episode!

I share a story a listener sent me about a special memory she has of her grandpa, and then I read "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry and reflect on the story for a few moments.

There's a lot of fun you won't want to miss! Later dudes...

The 2nd part of the Christmas Carol episode - and we're going back to the theater, sort of...

Charles Dickens died in 1870 but his legacy continues on strongly to this day. He is often synonymous with Christmas, and for good reason. 150 years after his death, Charles' great-great grandson Gerald Dickens keeps the family legacy going by performing in one man theatrical performances of A Christmas Carol and other works of Dickens.

Today Gerald stops by to chat about the story, Charles Dickens, Christmas, and the film version of his one man play that he just recorded this year.

See the film here: https://byerschoiceltd.vhx.tv/?campaign=geralddickens

Gerald also blogs about his travels as he does various theatrical performances: https://geralddickens.wordpress.com/

It's Part 1 of a 2 Part episode focused on A Christmas Carol!

In today's episode, I sit down with author Gina Dalfonzo and talk about the theme of redemption in A Christmas Carol. She had a new book published this year called The Gospel in Dickens, and if you're interested in the theology of Charles Dickens you should check it out.

So come on in, sit down by the Christmas fire as we discuss some of the theology found in A Christmas Carol.

And stay tuned for the next episode - it's dropping on December 14, and we will have a very special guest who comes by to chat more about A Christmas Carol.

Note: Religion can be a touchy subject. I know that all my listeners will have different views in their beliefs, and I in no way want to exclude anyone from this episode or the conversation. I'm here to learn and my hope is that this episode gives us all a deeper understanding of the text of A Christmas Carol and the religious beliefs of Charles Dickens that did influence a lot of his writing.

Then Grace and I discuss our thoughts about the new interactive Zoom play put on by the Birmingham Children's Theater. And finally I read a couple of selections from Nancy Carey Johnson's book A Vermont Homesteader's Christmas Memories.

(This episode was delayed because of COVID, and was supposed to air before Thanksgiving. That's why you'll hear me talk about Thanksgiving as if it were still coming.)

No, not presents... PRESENCE.

In today's episode I interview singer songwriter Rehya Stevens. We talk about her album Celebrate and we have a lot of laughs sharing Christmas memories. We talk about the importance of giving our presence - that's with a "c" not "t"! - and being there for our family and each other this during this difficult time. This is one of the most enjoyable interviews I've had so far, and I can't wait for you all to hear it.

My listener memory comes from my sister, and she talks about the joy of baking Christmas cookies with our Grandma.

I know it's past Thanksgiving, but I have another Thanksgiving story to share: I read A Mystery in the Kitchen by Olive Thorne Miller. It's a tender story of a sister named Jessie who's brother has run away from home. And why is Jessie sneaking around in the kitchen?

Grab a plate of turkey, stuffing and gravy and enjoy this extra cozy episode! I interview Brian Earl from the Christmas Past Podcast, and we chat about the origins of our podcasts, Christmas (of course!), and in the time-honored Thanksgiving tradition we share what we are thankful. Even though it's been a rough year for everyone, we find we have a lot to be thankful for. I hope you do too!

Then I read Louisa May Alcott's story, An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving. The Basset children are left on their own for a night before Thanksgiving when their parents are called away to tend their sick grandmother. How will they spend their time alone? By doing chores, reading stories by the fire, fending off a bear attack - and most daunting of all, preparing their own Thanksgiving dinner. Mother has done it every year - so how hard could it be?

(Episode Warning: Due to the extra coziness of this episode, it is advised to not listen will driving or operating heavy machinery. Listening to this episode while digesting a large turkey dinner can increase the drowsiness effect. Listener discretion is advised.)

Are you in the mood for a simple Christmas? In this episode, I have a phone interview with author Nancy Carey Johnson and talk about her book "The Vermont Homesteader's Christmas Memories". We talk about her book, homesteading, Christmas music, pets and we share heartwarming stories of family, friends, and Jolly the Christmas dog. It's a conversation you won't want to miss! And her book is full of many more wonderful stories.

Gracie and I have a chat about our hopes for Thanksgiving... she wants to see her Grandma and Grandpa, and I want to eat my weight in stuffing and turkey.

Then for our story, I read a couple of poems. "Christmas Carol" by Paul Laurence Dunbar, and "War Time Christmas" by World War I poet Joyce Kilmer.

In today's episode, listener Mackenzie shares a memory of her Black Friday tradition. Then I interview author CJ Livingstone of the new Christmas book "Santa, Inc." We talk about his book, Christmas, and the power of kindness. Finally, I read Louisa May Alcott's story "Tilly's Christmas" which continues the theme of showing the power of kindness.

So with kindness, hope, and a dash of Christmas magic, I believe we can change the world!

Hold on to your hats, I'm talking to three guests today!

There is a great community of Christmas fans that gather together on mymerrychristmas.com. Today I interview three of members of the website community that have used their creative talents to bring Christmas cheer.

I speak to Bill from thevillagecollector.com. He is a collector of Christmas villages and has an amazing website that showcases all of the decorative talents he and others have done over the years. We talk about his website, Christmas villages, and share some great family Christmas memories.

Then, I'm joined on the phone by new author Sandra Macauley who has written a Christmas book called "A Town Called Festive". We talk about her book, writing, and the joys of living in a small town. And of course we talk about Christmas too. https://www.amazon.com/town-Called-Festive-chances-forgiveness/dp/1621835588/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=a+town+called+festive&qid=1605020213&sr=8-1

And finally, Sean from The Christmas Podcasts Podcast at https://christmaspodcasts.com/ stops by and we chat about podcasting, Christmas, Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and we share some of our favorite Christmas memories.

mymerrychristmas.com has gathered together an amazing group of creative peoples of all types and hobbies. Once you've enjoyed hearing these folks come on over to the forums!

Does the thought of planning Christmas stress you out? Are you a master procrastinator like me? Lisa is stopping by the show with some help from her website thestressfreechristmas.com. We chat about that and share some wonderful Christmas memories.

Other highlights from the show - I share some Christmas memories that reminds me the holidays can be difficult for some people but the love of family brings us back together.

Gracie and I try out some pumpkin pie pretzels (yuck!) and chocolate chip cookie brownies (sooooo yummy) and chat about Christmas, our porch swing, and bears.

Or as Dwight from "The Office" might say: Bears. Brownies. Battlestar Galactica.

I also read the fairy tale The Shoemaker and the Elves by the Brothers Grimm.

It's a month of thanksgiving and gratitude, so come on in and make yourself at home!

Stories for Halloween, Vol 1, Part 3 The Goblins Who Stole a Sexton by Charles Dickens.

Happy Halloween! The final story in our trilogy of terror and weirdness comes from Charles Dickens. Gabriel Grub is a mean old sexton, and we find him digging a grave late on Christmas Eve. What could possibly go wrong?

This has been a fun way to celebrate Halloween during quarantine, and also to read some classic scary Christmas stories. I'll have a new regular episode out on Monday! Stay safe, and eat lots of candy for me tonight.

Episode Music:

Enjoy this classic Christmas story that has a dash of Halloween. Every year Santa brings toys to all the good girls and boys of the world. He is beloved by many. But there are a few who would love to see Santa fall...

Who would be nasty enough to want to see Santa gone? Say hello to the Daemons of Selfishness, Envy, Hatred, Malice, and Repentance. Santa better watch out!

Cozy Christmas Podcast Presents a Special Presentation!

In the first of three special episodes for Halloween week, I read the classic 1829 ghost story "The Tapestried Chamber" by Sir Walter Scott.

"When General Browne's friend invites him to spend the week at his home, he's delighted to oblige—that is, until he spends a night in the tapestried chamber!"

We invite you to sit back, relax, and turn down the lights... and enjoy this story for Halloween!

Welcome to another episode! Today I share a memory from the winner of the Scrooge Ornament, then I have an Interview with children's author Kathryn Burgess. She has a great new story to help kids deal with seeing Santa in a safe way this year. Gracie and I are on the search for more treats and this time we make some cinnamon and sugar chips and talk about Christmas, COVID, and a few laughs. Then I read a Christmas excerpt from Charles Dickens' book, The Pickwick Papers.

Halloween and Christmas meet together in space!

Today's episode is an interview with author and classic science fiction/fantasy author Ray Bradbury's official biographer, Sam Weller. He has just published a new collection of gothic short stories called Dark Black. It's a book that will get you into the Halloween mood! There's also a new audio drama podcast called The Way We Haunt Now. https://hauntnowpod.com/

In the episode we talk about these two short stories - if you'd like to read them you can find them online. They are pretty short and won't take long to read.

G'day mate! (Hmmm... do Australians really say that?)

In this episode, Gracie is back and we make a delicious apple pie. Unfortunately we can't share any of it, but you can make one with this recipe: https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/dutch-apple-pie/815d821f-058d-4177-93be-e157390e947b Pro-cooking tip: Don't forget to preheat your oven! Being the expert chef that I am, I would never do that. Heh.

Then a listener from Australia shares a Christmas memory, and I try (and fail) to list any interesting facts about the land Down Under. I do read a couple of Australia themed stories: a poem called The Aussie Night Before Christmas and then we take a trip with Australian writer Henry Lawson and his piece published in 1907 - "The Ghosts of Many Christmases". Don't worry it's not a ghost story, but rather it's a reflection on the different locations he had celebrated Christmas in his past.

There's an unwritten rule of podcasting that if your new podcast can make it past the 7th episode, then you're more likely to keep it going for the long haul. Well this is the 7th episode, and the Technical Dragons were running amuck. Fear not! I have defeated them, and I will be back for episode 8. But at least it fits in with the theme of today's podcast: Christmases that don't go exactly as planned...

In the next episode, we'll talk more about the story. But in the meantime, I hope you enjoy Mr. Dickens' first Christmas story.

Then my daughter and I answer those Very Important Christmas Questions, like: What's your favorite Christmas movie? We also have a mild disagreement as to when it's OK to start listening to Christmas music.

I also talk briefly about my favorite Christmas story, and give some shout outs to several podcasts that helped inspire me to make my own.

Today I talk to Pamela McColl about her two new books on Mrs. Claus! In our discussion we talk about the history and development of the character of Mrs. Claus, and how she is often portrayed. We also speak about lessons we can learn from her, and how celebrating Christmas with Santa and Mrs. Claus helps enrich the imagination of children... and a few of us adults! Welcome back to A Cozy Christmas Podcast! Summer's heat can make it hard to feel the Christmas spirit, but it's still there—waiting to be found and shared! In this episode, I talk about how creativity can spread joy—especially Christmas joy—and I take a moment to reflect on Currier & Ives and their timeless winter scenes.

For our story today, I read the first two Christmas chapters of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. The March sisters' creativity, generosity, and joy shine through—whether in giving to a family in need, receiving an unexpected gift from a kind neighbor, or staging a delightfully chaotic homebased theatre performance. Together, they remind us that the best gifts we give (and receive) are always the most heartfelt.

Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome to a brand-new season of A Cozy Christmas Podcast! In today's episode, I'll be sharing some Christmas and winter-themed selections from Kilvert's Diary. Francis Kilvert was an English clergyman in the Victorian era who kept beautifully detailed journals of rural life and ministry from 1870 to 1879. His descriptions of nature and the people around him are an absolute delight to read. However, I do want to give a quick heads-up—some of the entries I'll be reading touch on themes of loss and grief. I debated whether to include them, but ultimately, I felt they provide an honest and heartfelt glimpse into life during that time. In addition to today's readings, I'll also chat about the new year, some potential plans, and more. I hope you'll join me!

Merry Christmas! In today's special Christmas Eve episode, I have several little readings and stories to share with you, along with another fun discussion about Christmas with my daughter Gracie. Today we talk about her favorite Christmas cookies, movies, and she shares some tips on how to show kindness to the people you love during Christmas time. You won't want to miss this one! And get ready, because Gracie comes in with some hot takes on Jim Carrey's Grinch movie. Please no hate mail. We like what we like...

(Note: sorry for the continued bad audio from my mic during our Ask Gracie Anything segment. I'll get it figured out!)

As I wrap up Christmas 2024, I just want you all to know that I so appreciate your continued support! Thank you for listening!

In today's episode, my daughter Grace comes back to talk about her favorite Christmas traditions and memories. We also talk about some recent romantic Christmas movies I've seen lately. Then, for our cozy story, I read Chapter 3 of "Old Christmas" by Washington Irving. In the chapter today, our narrator arrives at Bracebridge Hall on Christmas Eve, and continues to observe the old traditions.

If you have a questions for Gracie, let me know and it might appear on an upcoming episode!

There is a bit of a festive spirit around the Cozy Christmas Lodge today... we are celebrating 150 episodes! I want to thank you all for your support and participation in what has become one of the most creatively satisfying experiences of my life.

So today we start off by looking to the future of Christmas Celebrations, and see what kind of Christmas songs and stories A.I. can make up. While it doesn't go horribly wrong, it does feel kind of... soulless. Then I read a charming children's story called "Matchstick Mouse: Merry Little Christmas" which is written by one of our faithful listeners, Morgan O'Brien! Then I finally am able to sit down with Gracie and catch up on her life. We talk about the "Home for the Holidays" variety show we participated in, including all the details about the Christmas Carol skit. Then we talked about the musical "Wicked", Christmas Music, and the first question of a new segment called Ask Gracie Anything, in which I try to explain who and what the Glo-Friends were.

Today I have the first part of a longer story called Old Christmas by Washington Irving. Published in 1815, it explores some of the roots of our Christmas traditions as the main character visits a friend at Bracebridge Hall during Christmas to experience an old fashioned Christmas! It's a story that explores nostalgia and tradition, and is a lot of fun to read!

So settle in by the fire, grab some egg nog or Christmas tea, and enjoy today's story!

Forget Downton Abbey - We're heading to Sugar Plum Manor!

In today's episode I talk to author Roseanna M. White. She has a new Christmas romance set in the Edwardian-Era England! "Christmas at Sugar Plum Manor" draws inspiration from the Nutcracker and weaves a magical tale of love and friendship at Christmastime. This is also the book we're reading in our Cozy Christmas bookclub.

In my fun and cozy conversation with Roseanna, we talk about her book and writing journey, and how The Nutcracker inspired her story. We also dig into all the fun topics of Christmas - movies, music, food, memories, traditions, and more!

Happy Thanksgiving! In today's episode my guest is Ken Smith from the North Pole News Dispatch - one of my favorite Christmas podcasts! Fans of good food, good friends, and good music will enjoy the first part of our discussion where we chat about everything from Thanksgiving recipes and traditions and then talk about Burl Ives and his classic song "Holly Jolly Christmas". Then we turn to a more serious discussion on how to find joy when times are hard. We end the episode reflecting on what we are thankful for - and Ken reminds me that the happy memories I have of those who are past, and those who are with me in the present, are a precious gift.

Also, there is a special video version of this episode on youtube, you might want to check it out!
