The goal isn't just to get through the teen years. It's to build a relationship that lasts beyond them. Trusted by Your Teenager is for moms who want to build the kind of trust that keeps their teenager talking, even when the conversations get hard. I'm Kristen Duke, and I share practical tools to help you respond instead of react, understand what may be underneath your teen's behavior, navigate hard conversations with more confidence, and strengthen your connection now so it can continue into adulthood. Because becoming the mom your teenager trusts isn't something you have to leave to chance. These are skills you can learn, practice, and sharpen. Ready to start? Join me for the next Trusted Lab Workshop and start becoming the mom your teenager wants to talk to, and will actually listen to. - 179 - You Care SO Much. So Why Doesn't Your Teen Feel It?
You care about your teenager so much.
So when they say, "You don't care about me," your first thought might be: Are you kidding me? Everything I do is because I care!
But sometimes there's a disconnect between how much you care and how your care is being experienced by your teenager.
The questions. The reminders. The advice. The checking in. The trying to fix it.
It all comes from love, but to your teenager, it can sometimes feel like pressure.
In this short episode, I'm sharing one simple shift you can make when you know something is wrong but your teenager doesn't want to talk.
And if you're missing the relationship you used to have, getting one-word answers, watching your teen disappear into their room, or wondering why your attempts to connect seem to push them farther away, don't just wait and hope it gets better.

Tue, 06 Oct 2026 - 08min - 178 - Your Teen Won't Talk to You? You Might Be Solving the Wrong Problem
What's something you really want to be able to talk to your teenager about?
Phones? Dating? Friends? Lying? School?
I hear some version of this question from moms all the time:
"How do I talk to my teenager about this?"
But there's a question that comes BEFORE that one:
Does your teenager want to talk to you in the first place?
In this episode, I'm breaking down the difference between knowing WHAT you want to talk about and having the skills to create the kind of conversation where your teenager actually keeps talking.
Because this isn't necessarily an effort problem.
It may be a skill problem.
And that's good news, because skills can be learned, practiced, and sharpened.
We'll talk about why awareness alone isn't enough, how your past conversations don't have to predict your future conversations, and the roadmap I use inside my Trusted Method to help moms move toward more confidence, better conversations, and stronger connection with their teenagers.
And I'll help you figure out which next step fits where you are right now:
If your teenager already talks to you but you want to feel more confident talking about the HARD stuff, my Teen Topic Toolkit is coming soon.

Tue, 29 Sep 2026 - 11min - 177 - What If You're Trying TOO Hard to Help Your Teenager?
You love your teenager. So when they come to you with a problem, of course you want to help.
But what if all that helping is actually making it harder for your teenager to talk to you, and harder for them to build confidence in themselves?
In this episode, I'm challenging the belief that being a good mom means giving your teenager the answers they need.
Because your teenager doesn't just need good answers from you.
They need opportunities to discover that they can find answers themselves.
We'll talk about why immediately reassuring your teenager isn't always confidence-building, what can happen when you unintentionally start thinking FOR them, and how your loving attempts to help can change their experience of talking to you.
And I'll give you one question to start asking yourself:
Am I helping my teenager think, or am I doing the thinking for them?
Because you don't want your teenager dependent on you for every answer. But you don't want disconnection either.
You want to become someone your teenager feels safe thinking out loud WITH.
Maybe the thing that needs to change isn't your teenager's willingness to talk.
Maybe it's the pattern that happens when they do.
If you want help seeing the patterns happening between you and your teenager that may be creating distance—even when you're trying to create closeness, join me for the Trusted Lab workshop on September 9th.

You can't do different until you SEE different.
Tue, 01 Sep 2026 - 10min - 176 - The Relationship You're Building with your Teen Before They Leave Home
One day, your teenager gets to decide how much of their life you're part of.
That can feel terrifying, especially when they're already pulling away, talking less, or becoming more independent.
But staying close to your teenager isn't about holding on tighter. In this episode, I'm sharing what raising four teenagers has taught me about letting go without losing the relationship, why independence doesn't mean they need you less, and what we can do now to build the kind of relationship they'll want to carry into adulthood.
We'll talk about the difference between being involved and being available, why trying harder to stay close can sometimes create more distance, and how to keep the bridge between you strong as your role begins to change.
Because the goal isn't to raise a teenager who has to include you.
It's to build a relationship they keep choosing when they no longer have to.

- 174 - Is Guilt Quietly Parenting Your Teenager?
Most moms don't realize how many of their parenting decisions are driven by guilt.
"I yelled yesterday, so I should let this go."
"I've been working too much, so I need to make it up to them."
"They're upset... maybe I should back off."
It feels loving. It feels responsible.
But what if guilt is actually keeping you stuck?
In today's episode, we're unpacking why guilt isn't a parenting strategy, and why the healthiest moms aren't the ones who never feel guilty, but the ones who know what to do after guilt shows up.
You'll learn why guilt is like a dashboard warning light, what it's really trying to tell you, and how to stop letting it sit in the driver's seat of your parenting.
In this episode:Why guilt is information, not transformation
The surprising cost of guilt-driven parenting
How guilt steals confidence, consistency, and peace
The difference between guilt and genuine growth
A simple mindset shift that can change the way you parent
Ready for the next step?If you've been feeling like you're losing your teenager, I want to personally invite you to The Trusted Workshop.
This live 70-minute workshop will help you stop guessing what's wrong and start understanding what's really happening beneath your teenager's behavior. You'll leave with practical shifts you can begin using immediately to rebuild trust and connection.

Wed, 29 Jul 2026 - 06min - 173 - Why Trying Harder Isn't Working (And What To Do Instead)
You've read the books. Listened to the podcasts. Prayed. Researched. Promised yourself you'd stay calmer next time. And yet somehow, you and your teenager keep ending up back in the same fight.
In this episode, I'm sharing why more effort isn't the answer, and what actually is. Using a story from a mom I recently worked with and an analogy that's stuck with me for years, we're breaking down the one belief that keeps so many moms stuck in the same cycle with their teens.
If you're tired of trying harder and wondering why it still feels so hard, this episode is for you.
In this episode:
Why effort alone doesn't fix conflict with your teenager The one shift that changed everything for a mom who'd been struggling for over a year A simple analogy that will change how you think about "trying harder"Ready to find your own blind spot? I'm offering a free 20-minute Conversation Audit, where we'll uncover one pattern that's making conversations with your teenager harder than they need to be, and I'll give you one shift you can start making immediately. Wed, 22 Jul 2026 - 09min - 172 - What If Your Worry Is Unintentionally Shaping Your Teen's Confidence?
Have you ever found yourself thinking:
"My teenager's confidence is so low."
"I've told her a hundred times how amazing she is, but she just doesn't believe me."
"I wish he could see what I see in him."
If so, this episode might completely change the way you see your role in your teenager's confidence journey.
In this episode, I'm sharing one of the biggest parenting blind spots I see in loving, intentional moms:
The hidden connection between a mom's fear, worry, and anxiety... and her teenager's confidence.
Because sometimes the very things you're doing to help your teen feel more capable are accidentally communicating the opposite.
We'll talk about:
Why confidence isn't built through more encouragement alone
The bike story that changed how I think about parenting
What toddlers and teenagers surprisingly have in common
The difference between leadership and fear
Why your teenager may be borrowing more than your words
Most moms think they need support when they're yelling or when things are really bad at home.
But what if support isn't for the yelling mom?
What if it's for the loving mom...
The thoughtful mom...
The mom lying awake at night wondering if she's doing enough.
The mom carrying responsibilities she was never meant to carry.
If that's you, I want you to know: there is another way.
The next 30-Day Trusted Reset begins next week, and it was specifically designed to help moms move from fear to steadiness, from reacting to responding, and from carrying everything to leading with confidence.
Because awareness is powerful.
But awareness alone doesn't break patterns. Practice does.
If you're ready to stop trying harder and start practicing differently, I'd love to support you.

Have you ever thought, "I don't even know where to start..." when someone asks how things are going with your teenager?
If so, you're not alone.
In this episode, we're talking about why so many moms feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, and unable to put into words what's happening at home. I'll share the three questions I ask moms that help bring clarity, uncover what's really going on beneath the surface, and identify the patterns keeping them stuck.
If you feel you're carrying more than you were ever meant to carry, this episode is for you.
If you'd like help getting to the source of what's really happening in your family, I'd love to offer you a free 20-minute consultation. No pressure, just a conversation to help you gain clarity and see what's possible.

Tue, 30 Jun 2026 - 10min - 170 - You May Be Trying to Control Something You Were Never Meant to Control with your Teenager
Are you trying to control something you were never meant to control?
If you've ever thought:
"My teen won't talk to me."
"I've tried everything."
"Nothing is working."
"Why am I the only one trying?"
...this episode is for you.
In today's conversation, I share a personal story about a time I was absolutely convinced I was right, and the surprising lesson my child taught me. I explore how easy it is to cast yourself as the hero, someone else as the villain, and unknowingly give away your power in the process.
You'll learn the difference between being powerless and being influential
If you're exhausted from carrying the weight of your teenager's choices, future, or behavior, this episode will help you see a different path forward.
You may decide you're ready to...

Fri, 27 Dec 2024 - 10min - 145 - BONUS: Seeking Answers to Spiritual Questions (my talk at church)
I gave a talk at church on Sunday, and when I asked on Instagram stories if anyone wanted to hear, I got a 94% YES! The other 6% said they have no spiritual questions....
This is something I've thought about a lot personally, as well as for my children and dear friends who have struggled with questions of the spiritual nature, and so I was excited to collect my thoughts about the topic.
This pertains to parenting, because I strive to be spiritually strong for myself AND my kids, to be in tune to how I can best mother them, and guide them spiritually.
It stems from a talk: Seeking Answers to Spiritual Questions with my own thoughts weaved in.
For those not of my faith (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), we take turns sharing talks to the congregation, the last time I shared was a year and a half ago.
I LOVE the opportunity to do a deep dive, it truly boosts my spirituality, many hate the public speaking aspect of addressing a chapel full of 300!

Also mentioned, Confidence Chat Cards: 50 different scenarios on how to help your teenager boost their confidence.

Thu, 09 May 2024 - 10min - 121 - Ep: 11 What does sharing your story have to do with parenting?
Just minutes after I recorded the last episode, I got a call from my son that I shared the story about him. I told him about what I have planned in the next few months, and discussed the importance of sharing stories, and he said, "What does sharing your story have to do with parenting?"
I answer that question in this episode more in depth, it's a great question!
Sharing challenging stories, and especially about your kids is not easy, and that's why I've done this in a safe environement in Team Trusted, our private community, and an aspect that I'm excited about in the Transform Retreat (some will be anonymous) for those that feel safe to share.

The tears came out today!
I wasn't planning to share this today, but I just got back from the gym where I ran into someone (I barely know) and we talked for an hour... I walked away so benefitted from that experience, that it reminded me of how sharing our vulnerable stories has the opportunity to bless others in countelss ways, many we will never know about.
I share how a friends story she shared 10 years ago stuck in my mind, and helped me bless & support my son, and I'll forever be grateful. (Listen to a follow up to this episode in the next one, number 11).

Tue, 30 Apr 2024 - 10min - 119 - Ep 9: Graduation Recap, how I broke trust, & then gained trust with my son
My son just graduated college! My friends on Instagram saw me travel to his graduation on Thursday this week, and you may remember how I've shared in the past that he chose not to participte in high school graduation (and how I eventually became ok with that) but that he dediced to indeed walk in his college graduation.
I shared a video on IG about him growing up, and the things I EXPECTED him to do that he didn't, and my growth process in all of that. Watch that video here.
I then had follow up questions from other mama's asking me, "How is your relationship now?" which I touch on here, and delve deeper into here in this podcast episode.
It's a little choppy towards the end, because as I was chatting on my porch into my voice memo (where I record these episodes) my neighbor came over to talk to me, and I had to stop. Since I had to stitch on the ending part 2 anyway, I cut that part out.
As always, I share about the benefits of Team Trusted, and how they have helped me and others on the team become a more trusted, safe space for their kids, and we'd love to have you join us.

Sat, 13 Apr 2024 - 09min - 110 - #101 Moms Words of Encouragement: Shawni Pothier
I have admired Shawni's parenting from afar as I've read her blog 71Toes.com for many years. She is just about 3 years ahead of me in this parenting gig, and I felt inspired seeing how she mothered just a few steps ahead of me.
I was so delighted to hear her words of encouragement for teens, words she hopes her kids will know before leaving the home and under her roof. She came up with a list of 5 all encompassing hopes for her kids, which I loved hearing her thoughts.
For more on my thoughts, I shared about Episode 41 of 10 things I want my kids to know.

Episode #100!!!! I'm so excited to introduce you to my high school best friend, Natalie. We met right after my 14th birthday, the week I moved from Louisiana to Texas about to begin my freshman year of high school. We had so much fun during our teen years, and you'll hear us talk about the good, the crazy, our parents, and then of course how all of that has affected how we parent our teens.
One of my favorite quotes from Natalie in this episode:
"Worry is a wast of imagination. I'd like to imagine the best case scenario."
I invite you all to do that. Imagine the best.

Thu, 14 May 2020 - 1h 07min - 108 - #099 Moving Teens with Katie Hughes
In March, we talked all about TEENS and FRIENDS. Friends are SO important for teenagers, and as parents, we often run this challenge about how to navigate friendships we are concerned about, as well as how to help them make friends. If you missed episode #98 with Dr. Justin Coulson about toxic friendships, I encourage you to LISTEN!
But with Katie, she moved with teens, and is in the trenches of helping her kids adjust, and I REALLY wanted to pick her brain, as I knew it was likely in our family future, and as I type this in May (when the interview was in February) we now know we ARE in fact moving, and helping my girls with friendships is high priority for me.
So many wisdom nuggets, even if you aren't moving. Katie is an intentional mom, and I've gleaned so much from watching her share insights over the years.

I'm happy my guest @KristinBHodson is here to help us know how to best have sex talk with teens. No longer is it enough to have "the talk" just once, it should be an ongoing discussion with 1,000 1 minute conversations, Kristin says.
Kristin runs a practice in Salt Lake City called @TheHealingGroup and is also a professor at the University of Utah.
As often happens, I ended up falling into the therapy chair to discuss my experience on the topic, and Kristin weighs in.

Thu, 16 Jan 2020 - 1h 03min - 97 - #090 How to respond to Teenage Rebellion (acting out)
After I shared about the year of the teenager initiative, I had a handful of people say, "I just can't get behind that, because I'm in a really hard place with my teen." My heart hurt for them. One commenter said to me, "I love following along to what you share, but sometimes it makes me feel worse about myself." That is the complete OPPOSITE of the feelings I want to invoke!
There are so many variables to consider, and so many ways of doing things, but I did some research, and sharing what I pulled together from all of that.

My friend Emily is just barely 17, already enrolled in college, has a few businesses under her belt, and guess what? Didn't graduated high school!
There are so many routes to get to a career destination, and Emily opened my eyes to other options. And so did the community this week on @KristenDukeChats on instagram where we talked about all different types of schooling.
It's ok to seek out alternative options!
You can find Emily a few places on Instagram:

We ALL love our screen time, and I talk to Andrea from @BetterScreenTime all about how we could do things a little better. I got some great tips for MYSELF and we talked about how isolating screens can be, especially for teens, who over-consume.
Andrea shared a fabulous TEDxtalk from Adam Atler with me which I reference as well.

Fri, 27 Sep 2019 - 26min - 87 - #080 Is your Child Addicted to Pornography?
Is your Child Addicted to Pornography? Probably not. If you've found your teen has been seeking out pornography, it doesn't mean they are addicted.
Free in 13 is a program meant to bridge the gap between preventative measures and pornography addiction. Very few teens are addicted and there is a stigma attached to the word "addict" that we don't want our teens to feel.
There is so much information about how to prevent pornography exposure, but what to do if you've found your child is stuck in the trap? There is help!
Look at www.Freein13.com as well as great information on their instagram @Freein13
We talked about the Children's book: Good Pictures, Bad Pictures
The teen podcast Fist Bump (out 9/20) has some extra info about video gaming, isolation, and the connection with pornography use. Take a listen, and encourage your teens to as well and HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT IT!
Please consider leaving an iTunes review if you enjoyed this episode! My friend Jenny just graduated from high school and I'm so grateful she was willing to share her story from her sports injuries in high school.
She shares her highs, her lows, her frustration, and moments of depression. She shares how she treated her parents and what her parents did that was helpful.
If you've got a teen that has had a heartbreaking injury, this may just help, and if not...plan for the future!

My guest Kay from @AWorldwideSisterhood chats with me in this episode and offers some actionable steps about how we could improve our communication with our teens.
We exchange some funny stories about our imperfectness in parenthood, and how we are striving for great communication, but still working on it!
Listen, share, and leave a review if you found it helpful!

Wed, 04 Sep 2019 - 38min - 84 - #077 Bullying and Talking with Kids
I'm so grateful to have Amber from @TeenTake30 on the podcast today, sharing how her family suffered from BULLYING, and the consequential move afterwards.
As parents, we are all TERRIFIED of it happening to our kids, but do we talk about it in such a way that we let them know we are on their side if it does? Do we give them tools to deal with it if it's happening? Have we talked about how to be an up-stander instead of a bystander? All of this is covered and more in this discussion, and I hope you'll listen and SHARE with your friends.
We are discussing this in depth on instagram this week also at @KristenDukeChats. If you listen to this later, look for the discussion in the highlights.
Shop our AMAZON store for family fun activities and my favorite parenting books.

Wed, 28 Aug 2019 - 45min - 83 - #76 Ready to Launch (Teen leaving home)
I'm so grateful to be able to share my oldest, Tyler, with all of you, and how he is READY TO LAUNCH, fly the coop, move out of the house, spread his wings. In this episode, we talk about where he is headed, what he learned to prepare him for this, and even why he quit social media years ago!
My emotions are high, and you'll hear that come out in my intro, recorded just 2 days before my son heads out on his 2 year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
If you'd like to follow along on his mission journey, I'll be sharing updates on his Instagram, @Tyler_Duke which he said I can make public so others can see how he's serving.
Sharing in the AMAZON STORE all of the items we got for his mission.

Wed, 14 Aug 2019 - 47min - 81 - #074 Preserve the Relationship
This phrase, "preserve the relationship" has been stuck in my mind for about a year, and I've been chatting about it here and there on Instagram at @kristendukechats, but after a comment from a member in our community last week, it really got me thinking, and I knew I needed to dedicate an episode all about this as we begin this journey to strengthen our teens.
What does the word PRESERVE mean to you?
In this episode, I talk about PRESERVING, and how it's a HOPEFUL message in parenting! I share about my search for similar meanings and how I came to a better understanding of what I can do in my parenting to preserve it not just for now, but for later as well.
Please listen and share if you know others that would benefit from this discussion. Then join us on Instagram to further chat this week.

I've been hinting at a new focus for the podcast, and it's here! This is a short introduction to how things are going to change, and WHY I felt so impressed to turn it to a new direction.
