Green Signals

Green Signals is a show about railways - its politics, its economics, its people and history. We turn over the issues of the day and talk to the people making the decisions that affect all our lives. We also dig into many of the amazing events in the history of an industry that spans nearly 200 years. Nigel Harris (former Managing Editor and Events Director of the leading industry and opinion forming magazine RAIL) and Richard Bowker (former Chair & CEO of the Strategic Rail Authority) steer the show to make it sometimes controversial, frequently irreverent - but always topical and relevant.

In the 1960s and 70s, the legendary Peter Rampton amassed a remarkable collection of steam locomotives and artefacts from around the world.
He brought them back to his farm in Surrey, had a few open days in the 1970s and then pretty much locked the doors to the barns to keep the secrets within safe and hidden from view.
Now, in the barn find of the century for narrow gauge railway enthusiasts, Collection X as it became known is starting to be shown to the public again. Tim Dunn - TV personality, railway historian and now Head of Collection Development at the Vale of Rheidol railway gives us an exclusive and personal tour and shows us some of the very special locomotives that comprise Collection X.

It is one thing carrying out track renewals on the railway when it is being done away from urban centres. But when it is in the centre of the capital city on a section of railway that is amongst the busiest in the world, it is quite another.
But that is exactly what Network Rail and South Eastern are doing in a major, 22 day blockade to replace track and rebuild platforms between Waterloo East and Charing Cross.
And best of all, Green Signals was invited to go and walk the track to the works up close!

Thu, 30 Jul 2026 - 1h 07min - 238 - The North Norfolk Railway: A steam train to the seaside
The North Norfolk Railway is one of Britain’s most delightful heritage railways. Beautifully preserved in an Edwardian time capsule, a visit to the North Norfolk Railway evokes memories of a long-gone Britain – of long, lazy summer days and holidays by the beach.
Stef and Richard recently went to visit the railway and have a look behind the scenes at what it takes to keep this marvellous railway in such superb condition. They even manage to find time to visit the beach and enjoy fish and chips – out of the wrapper of course!
The North Norfolk Railway truly is a “steam train to the seaside”.

Thu, 23 Jul 2026 - 1h 10min - 236 - Restoring the missing rail link in the Rother Valley
The Rother Valley Railway is a remarkable project to restore a missing 3.5 mile link to reconnect the Kent & East Sussex Railway with the London – Hastings main line at Robertsbridge. When it’s complete, this 14 mile long railway will take visitors through some of England’s most beautiful countryside past Bodiam Castle to Tenterden. The Rother Valley Railway recently passed a major milestone with the opening of Robertsbridge station and the rededication of the link to Network Rail. Naturally, Green Signals went along to join in the fun and met, amongst others, Lord Hendy, Huw Merriman, John Smith of GB Railfreight and Suzy Eddie Izzard, the Actor and Comedian.

When I was offered the opportunity to go behind the scenes on a Belle Trains luxury steam train holiday headed to the Alps, I jumped at the chance.
Getting up close and personal with some huge steam locomotives, experiencing an abundance of delicious food, being looked after by some of the friendliest and most efficient staff I’ve ever come across… and the views. Well, breathtaking doesn’t really do them justice.
THIS was going to be the trip of a lifetime.

Thu, 28 May 2026 - 1h 05min - 222 - Open Access to Marchwood: “Shoddy, Unevidenced and Factually Incorrect” – Yeowart slams ORR
Over 25 years since the UK’s first open access passenger rail service, and the subject still divides opinion. Those for point to services to communities that had been forgotten, competition driving down prices as well as stimulating. Those against point to revenue abstraction not outweighed by the growth and to adding serious performance challenges on an already congested network.
One person who has led the charge for Open Access and has been unquestionably successful in the process is Ian Yeowart. He is tenacious, focused and very experienced. Ian’s latest venture though, the running of services between Marchwood on a reopened Waterside branch, through Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke to London Waterloo has been comprehensively rejected by the ORR – and he’s not best pleased.
I caught up with Ian to hear his views and he is characteristically forthright in his opinions.

Wed, 27 May 2026 - 27min - 221 - Running an integrated railway - South Western Railway MD Lawrence Bowman interview
On the morning of Sunday 25 May, the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander MP boarded the first South Western Railway service to depart London Waterloo.
The company’s new Managing Director, Lawrence Bowman, has been steadily working hard since to create an integrated SWR and Network Rail team, responsible for both train operations and infrastructure.
As Great British Railways continues to develop and form, Lawrence Bowman finds himself in arguably the hottest of all hotseats. The last 11 months has been a challenge though for all sorts of reasons, and those opposed to renationalisation have wasted no time pointing out that at times, performance has dipped below what it was under private operation. As ever, the story is much more complex than that.
To find out what has been going on and more importantly what is planned, I have come to Wimbledon Train Care depot to meet with Lawrence and ask what the plan is and how challenging it’s going to be to deliver it.

Tue, 26 May 2026 - 36min - 220 - Artificial Intelligence is coming to the railway - But what does it mean?
Artificial Intelligence is no longer science fiction. It’s increasingly science fact. And it’s coming to the railway whether we like it or not.
GBRX has created the AI Industry Action Plan to show how Britain’s railway will move from isolated AI pilots to safe, scalable, system-wide adoption.
Green Signals went along to the glitzy launch event for the AI Industry Action Plan at the Science Museum, London, at the end of April to see what the fuss was about – and learn more about the plans and technologies that could shape the way that people interact with the railways for decades to come.

Thu, 21 May 2026 - 1h 10min - 218 - Fighting the Fight against flooding on Devon and Cornwall’s railways
There is considerable debate about the causes of, and future predictions for, climate change. But what is not in any doubt is that our weather has become more unpredictable and extreme.
The South West of England has always suffered more than most and the railway has always been at the forefront of meeting the challenge. In 2014, a serious breach of the sea wall at Dawlish caused the railway to be closed for 2 months whilst it, and the sea wall, were rebuilt. 2026 provided an opportunity for the defences to be tested like never before with multiple named storms that battered the region.
The Main Lines held up well and were quickly reopened. The branch lines were not so fortunate and the lines to Barnstaple, Okehampton, Looe and Newquay were closed for extended periods. The Tarka Line from Exeter to Barnstaple was closed for around 24 days between January 27th and February 20th, yet this is no sleepy branch line but a vitally important community railway carrying almost 1 million passengers a year, that’s a serious problem.
I was keen to see what was being done to address the problem and so at the kind invitation of Network Rail, I travelled down to Devon and Cornwall to have a look first hand.
The mixture of collaborative working and new technology I saw first hand was really impressive….

Thu, 07 May 2026 - 57min - 215 - Sacked from DfT Operator! The exclusive full interview with Chris Gibb
Chris Gibb is one of the country’s most respected and experienced railway operators. His storied career includes a period as Chief operating Officer of Virgin Trains. Few people know how to get the most out of operating the West Coast Main Line as much as Chris Gibb. He’s spent time running Scotrail and sitting on the Board of Network Rail. Latterly he’s been the Senior NED on the Board of DFTO. He has seen the railway sector from every possible angle.
Chris has long been an advocate for taking an holistic approach to maximising the potential of HS2. That extends to taking an integrated approach to rolling stock including how we think about the eventual need to replace the current fleet of tilting trains.
Perhaps frustrated by the lack of progress and concerned that decisions may be made that could actually reduce capacity of West Coast Main line services, Chris made a presentation to the All Party Parliamentary Rail Group setting out his ideas. The Government was not impressed and within 72 hours, Chris had been dismissed from his role at DFTO.
Green Signals recently met up with Chris to chat about what happened and what happens next. There’s no bitterness whatsoever. Just a burning desire that everyone, collaboratively, does the right thing for the future of this most important of rail corridors.
It’s clear he’s not going away.

Tue, 05 May 2026 - 39min - 214 - The UK's Most Beautiful Railway? Settle & Carlisle Railway Celebrates 150 Years
It is the railway line that survived against all the odds. It became a high profile cause celebre for campaigners and a political football for railway administrators over a long drawn out period beginning in the 1960s with the publication of Richard Beeching’s infamous report and ending in the late 1980s with a remarkable reprieve.
On 1st May 2026, this glorious railway celebrated its 150th anniversary, a celebration that for many years, look seriously in doubt. Green Signals spent a couple of days on the railway in glorious weather including the all important 150th anniversary day to speak to some of the people and to hear their stories of saving the line back in the 1980s and the work that is done today to ensure the line’s present as well as its future.

Thu, 30 Apr 2026 - 1h 05min - 212 - Inside a Railway Research Lab! We go behind the scenes at the University of Southampton
Britain has a proud history of advanced railway research. It was British Rail who conceived the hugely successful High Speed Train. The BR Research Centre then came up with the brilliant tilting train design of the Advanced Passenger Train until it was scrapped, only for it to reappear years later, when it was sold back to us by a French Italian consortium in the form of the Pendolino.
The Railway Technical Centre in Derby was a global centre of excellence. And then at privatisation, we rather lost the plot. The research arm of BR was sold, and research and development became fractured.
Fortunately though, the story did not end there and Green Signals recently had an exclusive behind the scenes visit to the University of Southampton where Professor William Powrie CBE and his colleagues are undertaking some amazing research that is not only improving our knowledge, but helping to save hundreds of millions of pounds as well.

Wed, 29 Apr 2026 - 40min - 211 - Reflections of a Rail Regulator - John Larkinson, outgoing CEO of the Office of Rail and Road
Few railway organisations have witnessed as much change in their role and structure over the past 30 years as the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). This, despite being a constant feature of the landscape. And yet the next few years will bring about the biggest changes so far in their role.
John Larkinson has been CEO for over 7 years, the culmination of a long and distinguished career in the railway industry. At the end of April 2026, John retires, a pivotal moment for him personally and the industry at large.
Green Signals sat down with John recently to chat about his career, his time at the SRA, at the ORR and the highs lows of all that, including his views on rail reform and hopes for the future. It’s a very personal discussion and one that anyone interested in the extraordinary period since privatisation of the railway till now will find hugely interesting.

Thu, 23 Apr 2026 - 1h 01min - 209 - Does he have the biggest job on the railway? Network Rail’s CEO Jeremy Westlake is in the hot seat
Network Rail is pivotal to whether GBR is a success or not. The reality will always be that Network Rail, with its resources, people, assets and role drives pretty much whether the railway performs day to day both now and in the future.
Jeremy Westlake is the CEO. In taking over from Andrew Haines he stepped out of the relative shadow of Chief Financial Officer role into the full glare of the top job. Does he have what it takes to make the transition? And does he have the vision to take Network Rail forward into a future that involves it transferring into Great British Railways whilst at the same making sure it performs?
We spoke with Jeremy about those questions and many more in this extremely candid and comprehensive interview.
Note - the interview was recorded on Thursday, 26th March 2026 so the dates of some of the events Jeremy refers to in the discussion should be seen in that context.

Thu, 16 Apr 2026 - 1h 12min - 207 - Running the world’s largest integrated transport system – in conversation with Andy Lord
It’s the biggest integrated transport undertaking in the world. So it follows that running it and being accountable for its day-to day operation, is one of the biggest jobs in world transport.
For Andy Lord, Commissioner of Transport for London (and Commissioner means Group CEO), it’s clearly a privilege and a job he relishes despite all the challenges it throws up. From the world famous and iconic London Underground, the much-loved red buses, the DLR, the Overground, the Trams, even the cable car plus the hundreds of kms of cycling superhighways, the job is as varied as the transport modes for which he is ultimately responsible.
In this wide-ranging interview, we talk to Andy about his background in aviation, his love of all things London Transport and some of the tricky decisions he must take on a regular basis. Plus, we look to the future and speculate a little on what changes may be on the horizon.

Thu, 02 Apr 2026 - 1h 09min - 204 - OxRail 2040. Is rail in Oxfordshire about to be transformed?
Oxfordshire is a one of the UK’s regional powerhouse economies. Furthermore, Rail is big business in Oxfordshire. In 2024/25, the estimated total entries and exits at Oxfordshire stations was some 19.6 million, a 17% increase from the previous year. It’s not quite at pre-pandemic levels but the growth is strong.
The OxRail 2040 strategy was widely consulted on during September 2025 and now forms the bedrock of Oxfordshire’s Plan for rail. But is it targeted, considered interventions or blue sky wish list thinking? In February 2026 , Green Signals went to find out more as well as visit the first real manifestation of the plan, the planned reopening of the Cowley branch.

Thu, 26 Mar 2026 - 1h 00min - 202 - Transpennine Route Upgrade – is this rail’s best kept secret?
There’s a revolution underway on the railways in the north, and no, it’s not Northern Powerhouse Rail, but rather something that will provide the bedrock to anything that NPR may become. Its name? The Transpennine route between Manchester, Leeds and York.
We don’t hear too much about the Transpennine Route Upgrade outside of the Manchester – Leeds – York corridor although that may be because it’s on time and on budget. But it’s no less impressive for that – at £11 billion, this multiphase project will transform passenger and freight traffic across the Pennines for decades to come.
Over the past few months, Green Signals has been following the project and visiting the area to find out more. And what we’ve found is impressive. Really impressive.
There’s still more to do and the project team are under no illusion about that but here’s out first major update on the remarkable project that is the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Tue, 24 Mar 2026 - 28min - 201 - Northern Powerhouse Rail – is it good value for money?
The National Audit Office or NAO is an independent parliamentary body. It is the independent public spending watchdog. It audits Central Government Departments, agencies and NDPBs. But it also carries out value for money audits into the administration of public policy.
One such value for money audit was into the recently re launched Northern Powerhouse Rail project, something that will be increasingly under the spotlight in coming years.
Green Signals spoke recently with Jonny Mood, Director - Value for Money / Performance Audit at the National Audit Office and who oversaw the Northern Powerhouse Rail audit to find out more.

HS2 has started excavation of the final tunnel bore on the 140-mile railway between central London and the West Midlands – the down tunnel from Old Oak Common station in west London towards Euston – HS2’s terminus.
The tunnel boring machine (TBM) is named Karen after Karen Harrison, one of the first female train drivers in the UK, who drove out of Old Oak Common depot.
Best of all, Green Signals was aboard to witness the launch of this, the last of 11 TBM’s on the HS2 project.

Tue, 17 Mar 2026 - 12min - 198 - Holding Government to account - In conversation with Ruth Cadbury MP
Select Committees work in both Houses of Parliament. They scrutinise and report on a wide range of activities from the work of Government departments to economics affairs.
They run inquiries on specific topics, the outcomes of which are public and many require a response from the government. They are to be taken seriously by all those who are asked to give evidence.
The Transport Committee is nominated by the House of Commons to scrutinise the Department for Transport. Its formal remit is to hold Ministers and Departments to account, and to investigate matters of public concern.
Ruth Cadbury MP is Chair of the Transport Select having been elected to the position in September 2024. It falls to her to lead the Committee through the scrutiny of the Railways Bill and the creation of Great British Railways. Green Signals recently met up with Ruth to learn more about the work of the Committee, how challenging it can be some times to hold Ministers and officials to account and her views on the Railways Bill.
We started though by asking her how she got into politics in the first place…..

Thu, 05 Mar 2026 - 1h 05min - 195 - The Railways Bill – Will it work?
The Railways Bill is the most important piece of railway legislation since the 1993 Railways Act that brought about the era of privatisation. The current Railways Bill (and Act) will bring about an era of re-nationalisation.
Except it’s more complex than that. Great British Railways will be a massive organisation with substantial reach but it will still have to exist in a world of devolution, third party operators notably railfreight, and two thirds of its money will be spent with the UK rail supply chain, private sector companies.
Whilst there is broad agreement on the need for change, theBill itself has critics as well as supporters. So we brought together 5 of the brightest minds in rail policy, finance, law and regulation to ask plenty of challenging questions including most important of all, will it make things better?
It was an enjoyable and lively discussion!

Thu, 19 Feb 2026 - 59min - 192 - Private Finance in Rail – Is it going to finally happen?
Private finance and the rail sector are often talked about but frequently misunderstood. And where it is well established in sectors such as rolling stock leasing, it can be divisive with strong and opposing views.
Yet the attitude of private investors and in particular their appetite to invest in UK infrastructure seems especially strong at the moment. That’s the view of leading consultancy AtklinsRéalis who have just published an important report into investor attitudes towards UK infrastructure.
We talk to Colette Carroll OBE, Managing Director for Transportation (UK & Ireland) at AtkinsRéalis.

Tue, 17 Feb 2026 - 46min - 191 - New Look CrossCountry Voyager: We attend the glitzy launch event!
The Voyager and Super Voyager trains are one of the least loved on Britain’s railway. But why is that? Operationally and mechanically, they are robust, reliable and capable. And they’re super quick too!
Reasons for their unloved status may include their interiors and their underfloor engines. Opinions will always differ on such things. Where opinions differ far less is that their interiors are tatty and tired.
Well, that’s about to change. On 10 February we were invited to the launch of the first refurbished Voyager at Alstom’s Derby Litchurch Lane site. And we rather like it. It’s functional rather than fancy, but actually, that’s exactly what is needed right now.
We spoke to Managing Director of CrossCountry Trains, Shiona Rolfe, had a good look round the train inside to check out the new features and came away looking forward to seeing the first of these refurbished Voyagers in service as soon as possible!

Thu, 12 Feb 2026 - 54min - 189 - Class 37 test running on HVO! With cab ride!
The Class 37 is one of the most successful British locomotive designs of all time. 309 locomotives were delivered between 1960 and 1965 and despite even the youngest now being over 60 years old, close to 100 examples still survive to this day, around two thirds of which still run on the mainline.
Europhoenix Rail is one such operator of Class 37s. The spot hire business has 11 Class 37s including celebrity locos 37901 ‘Mirlees Pioneer’, 37501 ‘Teesside Steelmaster’ and 37407 ‘Blackpool Tower’.
In a bid to life extend the Class 37’s even further whilst also reducing their CO2 and other emissions impact, Europhoenix have converted one Class 37 No. 37218 to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil or HVO. And on 3 February 2026, she took to the mainline to run from Leicester to Barrow Hill and back on a proving run.
And best of all, Green Signals were invited along for the ride.

Thu, 05 Feb 2026 - 1h 08min - 187 - Exclusive interview with Mark Phillips, CEO, Rail Safety and Standards Board RSSB
“The evidence is that Driver Only / Driver Controlled operation [DOO / DCO] is safer than being dispatched by a conductor or even a platform member of staff.” That’s the view of Mark Phillips, the highly experienced Chief Executive of the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB).
The RSSB was established in 2003, in the aftermath of the Ladbroke Grove rail crash. It is a membership organisation that is owned by and serves Britain’s rail industry. It is the independent safety, standards and research body for Great Britain’s rail network and so it’s role is pivotal and wide ranging.
Mark has been CEO since 2016. In 2026 he celebrates 40 years in the rail industry. I met up with him to chat about RSSB; what it does and to whom it is accountable, as well as tackling a number of the more emotive issues facing the railway at the moment.

Sat, 31 Jan 2026 - 08min - 185 - Curzon 2: The Highest Viaduct on HS2!
Curzon 2 (dubbed the Bellingham bridge by the HS2 team) isgoing to be the highest viaduct on HS2 when it’s complete. An enormous 25-metre-high truss will transform Birmingham’s skyline – you can already see it looming over the surrounding warehouses and industrial units if you take the train into Birmingham.
Unlike most of HS2’s other viaducts, which sit low in thelandscape, this one is the complete opposite. It crosses the existing railway line, which is itself already on top of a viaduct, crossing over a road. So, this will be the highest viaduct both from ground level to track level and from the ground to the top of the structure.
Richard and Charlie were lucky enough to get the opportunity to visit the site and climb to the top (the equivalent of walking to the top of a seven-storey building)!

Thu, 29 Jan 2026 - 1h 09min - 183 - NEW (Nearly) Trains for Chiltern Railways!
The venerable Mk 3 coaches that date from the 1970s and 1980s have served Chiltern Railways well for over 15 years now but everything is about to change.
On Tuesday, 27th January, Chiltern Railways officially launched the first of its 13 Mark 5a trainsets, complete with Class 68 locomotive all decked out in a striking blue livery.
Named Chiltern Explorers, the winning name in a customer vote, Richard had a chance to ride on the launch train and meet up with Managing Director of Chiltern Railways, Richard Allan, to learn what the arrival of the Mark 5As mean for Chiltern Railways and its customers.
It’s fair to say, he was pretty happy…..

Tue, 27 Jan 2026 - 05min - 182 - GWR Boss answers the tough questions: Mark Hopwood CBE – Great Western Railway MD
The Great Western Railway. Brainchild of legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Chocolate and Cream coaches and quintessential English Branch lines.
GWR has always done things a little differently whether it be broad gauge tracks or diesel hydraulic locomotives. There’s the Great Western Way and there’s the wrong way surely someone must have said at some point….
Today, GWR conforms more than it has in the past, but it still stands out. It’s elegant green liveried trains still serve the great cities of Cardiff, Bristol and all points west, right through to the extremities of the rail network in Penzance.
It’s Managing Director is Mark Hopwood CBE, a veteran of the rail sector and a highly respected railway operator. Much has been achieved during his tenure but nonetheless, he still faces some significant challenges.
I met up with Mark rather appropriately at the Didcot Railway Centre, the home of the Great Western Society, to talk about GWR - the highs, the lows and what may lie ahead.

Tue, 27 Jan 2026 - 58min - 181 - Northern Powerhouse Rail - What could go wrong?
Northern Powerhouse Rail, or NPR, was announced by the Government to much fanfare on 14 January 2026. Up to £45 billion will be invested in the creaking railway infrastructure of the North. A new line between Birmingham and Manchester is going to be under consideration. Years of dither and delay ends now, trumpeted the Secretary of State for Transport.
Many cheered for joy but a few scratched their heads. Surely the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade has been underway for a few years, and won’t that provide the baseline on which much of NPR between Manchester and Yorkshire will be built in any scenario? And why is a new line from Birmingham to Manchester such a great thing when the Government say it will be decades away and yet HS2 had planned to build it next before Rishi Sunak cancelled it?

Imagine a world where you could arrive at a station, get out your phone and open an App, click Start journey, make your train journey and then at your destination simply click End journey – and then have complete confidence and trust that you would be charged the correct, cheapest available fare.
Sounds like science fiction? Well, it could soon be science fact thanks to the Digital Pay as You Go trials currently underway across the railway. There are four such trials, all sponsored by the Department for Transport and Richard recently went to see the East Midlands Railway trial with Trainline that’s underway between Leicester, Nottingham and Derby.
Richard spoke with Steve Gooder, Vice President of Retail Innovation at Trainline about the new technology and came away very impressed. This could be genuinely game changing for passengers in the future.
And not far in the future either……

Wed, 31 Dec 2025 - 1h 14min - 175 - Cross Channel Rail – What works and what doesn’t?
2025 finally saw some action to please those who have long campaigned for better use to be made of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link between London and the mainland of Europe.
Virgin Trains was successful in winning the right to access the all-important maintenance yards at Temple Mills in North London and the British Government signed two Memoranda of understanding with the German and Swiss Governments respectively.
But it is not straightforward to run direct services from London to other major European cities other than Paris, Bruxelles and Amsterdam. There are many issues to overcome.
Jon Worth is one of the leading authorities on cross channel rail and his latest report is an extraordinarily detailed and thorough review of what all those challenges are – and how to fix them. It is essential reading for policymakers, politicians and anyone interested in understanding finding out what is really going on. I spoke with Jon to find out more.

Thu, 18 Dec 2025 - 1h 05min - 172 - Railway Signalling: In days, not decades!
Imagine being able to implement signalling solutions in days, not decades? Well, that’s the vision of Universal Signalling, an exciting new signalling tech start-up who are doing things differently – and to great effect.
They also have a smart approach to research, development and roll out by starting small, building knowledge and experience and growing from there.
Their first significant deployment is their U-Cross system which is being trialled on the Heart of Wales line between Llandeilo and Llandovery. It has the potential to revolutionise the safe and hassle-free operation of the 126 User Worked Crossings on the 96 miles of the Heart of Wales line, and plenty other of rural lines in Wales and Borders alone. We recently visited Llandovery to see the trial in action including installation of the equipment and learn more about this exciting technology.

Thu, 27 Nov 2025 - 54min - 167 - Government need to look in the mirror – they're the ones who screwed up! Interview - Olly Glover MP
In a wide ranging and refreshingly direct and no-nonsense interview, Green Signals talks to Olly Glover, the Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson and member of the Transport Select Committee.
We cover the Railways Bill, the role of Government, the need to put in place a rolling programme of electrification and investment more widely, the pros and cons of rolling stock leasing and much more.
Olly spent plenty of time working in senior roles in the railway industry before becoming an MP and so his comments are rooted in a deep understanding of the issues. He doesn’t pull any punches and suggests the Government might want to look at themselves in the mirror and especially the civil servants working in the Department for Transport before they complain about the mess they perceive the railways to be in.
The Railways Bill debates promise to be suitably lively.

Thu, 13 Nov 2025 - 1h 01min - 164 - Behind the Scenes on the Severn Valley Railway
The Severn Valley Railway is one of Britain’s premier heritage railway lines. Running between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth it delights tens of thousands of visitors each year with its faithful recreation of a quintessentially Great Western Railway line coupled with bold and progressive events such as its very popular diesel galas catering for the more modern heritage rail enthusiast.
We visited the SVR during the recent Class 37 Diesel Gala when no fewer than 10 Class 37s were assembled from across the country to celebrate 65 years of the class. We spent time with Gus Dunster, Managing Director of the line to talk about the challenges of keeping such a large operation on a sustainable footing. We visit the steam locomotive workshops at Bridgnorth, the signalbox at Kidderminster, the Traction maintenance depot also at Kidderminster. And Richard gets to look round and start up one of his beloved Class 40s.
It's a magnificent railway and this video provides a unique and behind the scenes insight into what makes it tick.

Thu, 06 Nov 2025 - 54min - 162 - Virgin Trains is BACK! And ready to take on Eurostar…
Eurostar has been a feature of the UK railway landscapesince 1994. But in all that time it has been the monopoly provider – and the cracks began to show some time ago. The reduction in routes, the closure of Ebbsfleet and Ashford, the fact that Stratford International has never been used for Eurostar services and what consumers say are unjustifiably sky-high prices have all added to the clamour for competition to shake things up.
That day got a lot closer last week, when the Office of Railand Road said that it would be directing Eurostar to allow Virgin Trains to use Temple Mills International depot, the key that unlocks the competition opportunity.
In this video we speak with Jon Worth, an acknowledgedexpert on all matters channel tunnel rail and European rail services to unpack what has happened, why it’s a big deal and what happens next.
We also have an exclusive interview with Phil Whittingham, Project Lead at Virgin Group who has led Virgin to this point and must now get all the hard work done to be able to start services in 2030. And we talk to Diccon Spain, the Spokesperson and Political Liaison Officer for the very high profile ‘Bring Back Euro Trains’ to Ashford and Ebbsfleet campaign. We discuss whether that aspiration is now any closer to reality. This discussion goes far further than anything else that has been reported since the ORR’s announcement. We don’t just repeat the press statements – but go deep into what has happened and why, and why there are still many questions to be answered.
In this episode:

Thu, 30 Oct 2025 - 56min - 160 - Demystifying the planning process of major projects... Is the UK’s system broken?
The Planning Act 2008 was designed to seriously improve (and speed up) the process for securing consent for major projects – by establishing something called a Nationally Significant Infrastructure project.
But when the planning application alone for the Lower Thames Crossing has cost some £300m so far without a spade in the ground, can we say that it has? And why did HS2 still go down the Hybrid Bill route, event though by that stage, the Planning Act was on the statute books.
To dig deep into these issues, Green Signals was able to speak with two of the countries most experienced former planning inspectors, now both working for consultant Infrastructure Matters.
Rynd Smith and Menaka Sahai are not just two former inspectors. Rynd holds the record for the most number of DCO Examinations chaired, including Lower Thames Crossing. Menaka has 25 years experience of planning matters and has examined multiple infrastructure projects worth billions.
In this episode:
(00:00) Intro
(03:35) What is an NSIP – and who decides if your project is one?
(06:24) What is the process for getting your project though to a Development Consent Order
(10:38) How do ordinary citizens raise legitimate concerns and what happens if they become repetitive and inconsequential?
(13:17) Is there a danger of consulting too much these days?
(16:24) Why does the rail sector seem to have lagged behind on using this process compared to say highways or energy?
(19:51) Did we get it wrong in hindsight using a Hybrid Bill process for HS2?
(26:05) Lower Thames Crossing – how on earth did we get to 350,000 pages and £270 million – is that not evidence enough that the process is broken?
(37:35) Is the Chancellor right that we spend far too much time worrying about bats and newts, or does that sentiment risk damaging the environment?
• Just what is the right balance – and how do we get to that point?

Wed, 29 Oct 2025 - 51min - 159 - Transforming Rail in Wales – Transport for Wales boss gives exclusive interview
It is not that many years ago that the train operator in Wales was working to a franchise agreement that many criticised as ‘no growth’. Whether that was entirely fair or not, there was no doubt that train services in Wales were being run with ageing trains on infrastructure that in many places needed significant upgrade and investment. Fast forward to 2025 and the position has been totally transformed.
Transport for Wales is now in charge of forging a new path and they are doing a pretty good job of it. The Core Valley Lines are unrecognisable compared to the recent past with brand new rolling stock, electrification, upgraded stations and the promise of metro style frequencies. Now attention is turning to North Wales with the hope that similar change can be achieved there.
The leader of this transformation is James Price, CEO of Transport for Wales. Although he may at first come across as a careful and measured individual, it is quickly clear that James is passionate and determined to improve the transport provision in Wales and the evidence so far is he is succeeding.
In this interview, we cover a wide range of topics such as South Wales Metro, Network North Wales, challenges with Rolling stock, Great British Railways and how it might affect Wales in the future, and of course HS2 and the Barnett formula. James doesn’t duck any question and there is a refreshing directness to his approach. It seems that the railways in Wales are at last in good hands.
