- 1202 - Freeports and Special Economic Zones - just how dangerous are they?
David Powell appeared on John Drummond's TNT show recently with a worrying take on the proliferation of Freeports and Special Economic Zones across the UK and the sinister forces which may lie behind them. This is in marked contrast to the reassuring statements being made by the Scottish Government in relation to Green Freeports. Let us know what you think about both perspectives! David is a senior lecturer in Fine Art at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, and describes himself as a "reluctant" political activist. He is a prolific commentator on twitter where he is better known as @EuropeanPowell You can watch the video version of this interview on Independence Live's Youtube channel Find our previous podcasts on Freeports here: https://yescowal.podbean.com/e/freeports-who-benefits/ https://yescowal.podbean.com/e/freeports-a-good-thing/ also: Richard Murphy blog on Freeports: https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/04/05/freeports-are-a-threat-to-free-markets-and-to-the-wellbeing-of-the-populations-of-all-countries-in-which-they-exist/ The Scottish Independence Podcasts team produce a NEW podcast episode every Friday search for Scottish Independence Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts. Fri, 12 Apr 2024 - 54min - 1195 - Gove's Gagging Order
A Bonus Tuesday episode! Our latest Hot Topic is Michael Gove's extraordinary attempt to stop devolved parliament ministers, local councils, universities and other public bodies from using their fully devolved procurement powers to boycott goods and services on ethical and moral grounds in a way that would implicitly oppose UK government's foreign policy. The bill also imposes a gagging order on ministers and public bodies by preventing them from even stating that they would have applied a boycott if not for the bill - with threats of fines being issued for non compliance! Both the Scottish and Welsh parliaments have refused legislative consent for the bill and yet it continues its progress through Westminster. In this Hot Topic report we highlight key points from the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments and the Westminster stage 3 debate to raise awareness of the latest assault on devolution and free speech. Tue, 12 Dec 2023 - 1h 03min - 1175 - COP28 Dubai - What Can We Expect?
Our Rising Clyde episode this month reports from COP28 in Dubai. Dubai is the seventh biggest exporter of oil in the world and the President of this COP is himself the President of the Abu Dhabi Oil Company. That in itself has raised a few eyebrows. We look at what’s at stake, at the end of the hottest year ever recorded. If world leaders are doing so little, why should we continue to pay any attention at all to what happens at the COP? Host Iain Bruce talks to Becky Kenton-Lake, the Coalition Manager at Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, and Nathan Thanki, of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. Fri, 10 Nov 2023 - 56min - 1170 - In A Nutshell ...the SNP Independence Strategy Debate
Scottish Independence Podcasts support Scottish Independence but we are not party political. The route to independence concerns everyone in the Yes movement and there is by no means consensus on the path that will lead to success. We will be dropping in on the various party conferences to see how they propose to get us there, starting with the 2023 SNP conference where the independence strategy was a key - and lengthy - debate. People new to party conference procedures might be understandably confused about the difference between resolutions, proposers and seconders, remits back, direct negatives ... In this episode, Indypodcasters Fiona and Marlene attempt to navigate the key parts of the debate up to and including the vote at the end. Key parts of the podcast are: 00:01:16 Humza Yousaf proposes the resolution 00:11:32 Stephen Flynn joint proposal 00:17:22 Tommy Sheppard Amendment A 00:23:22 Tony ~Guiliano Amendments B and C 00:29:43 Joanna Cherry Amendment D 00:37:19 David Buckley - Remit back 00:41:27 Graeme McCormick, Direct negative 00:45:43 Chris Hanlon Amendment F 00:48:22 Mike Russell, speaking against amendments F and G 00:51:21 Tommy Sheppard summing up 00:53:56 Joanna Cherry summing up 00:57:03 Pete Wishart summing up 00:59:37 Graeme McCormick summing up 01:02:11 Humza Yousaf summing up The full debate can be watched on SNP's Youtube channel here The Scottish Independence Podcasts team produce a NEW podcast episode every Friday search for Scottish Independence Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts. Fri, 27 Oct 2023 - 1h 05min - 1168 - Doun Hauden - A Psychology of Nationhood
In his book Doun Hauden Prof Alf Baird draws on research from colonial experiences of decolonisation to re-examine the question of Scottish Nationhood. We are delighted to welcome Alf back onto the Mibbes Aye show as our guest this month to take us through the results of his research - described by many as "a lightbulb moment". So IS Scotland a colony? Well, not constitutionally or legally as Alf readily admits. But is there a social, cultural and linguistic element of colonialism which can affect the mindset of a nation? Alf's research suggests this is very much a possibility and may well have been the determining factor in the result of the 2014 Scottish Independence referendum The book Doun Hauden is available from all good booksellers. Sources mentioned during the programme: A leaflet version of the key ideas funded by the Scottish Independence Foundation is available as a free pdf download The report "Elitist Scotland" is available here Information on franchises came from the report "who is entitled to vote" Scottish student numbers for 2021-22 The Scottish Independence Podcasts team produce a NEW podcast episode every Friday search for Scottish Independence Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts. Fri, 20 Oct 2023 - 1h 02min - 1167 - First Minister Humza Yousaf’s speech from SNP Conference Oct 2023
First Minister Humza Yousaf's keynote speech at his first SNP conference was delivered while his own family members remain trapped in Gaza by the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Against this emotional background his job is to enthuse and inspire not just his own party members, but the wider Yes movement. Did he achieve that? Listen for yourselves and we'll let you decide. Scottish Independence Podcasts is not party political, but we do occasionally share keynote speeches from a range of party conferences. On this occasion, with a shameful virtual media blackout evident from main stream media, we thought it even more important that we share this speech, as it sets the scene for the independence movement for the year ahead. Please share it with anyone you think would find it of interest. We all know we want independence - but how do we get there? What are the legal options? In this episode, our guest Graeme McCormick LLB shares a legal perspective on the various routes which could be on the table, including UDI, Section 30 orders, Dissolving the Union, plebiscite elections and more. He also has some inspirational ideas for actions the Scottish government could take with its limited devolved powers that would be game changing for all Scottish citizens right now, as well as providing more than enough funding for the transition to an independent state. Tue, 19 Sep 2023 - 20min - 1161 - Oppenheimer - A Campaigner’s Perspective
Christopher Nolan's new film Oppenheimer is described as an "epic biographical thriller". It tells the story of the physicist appointed to lead the work on the Top Secret Manhattan Project - creating the atomic bomb, used to such devastating effect against the people of Japan in 1945. Bill Ramsay, a lifelong anti-nuclear campaigner asked if we would like to join him and fellow campaigner Isobel Lindsay to have a discussion about the film, the complex moral issues raised at the time and the impacts still felt today as the nuclear arms war continues to escalate. The result was a fairly wide ranging and very interesting discussion. If you would like to watch the video version of this podcast you will find it on our Youtube channel. We first looked at Freeports, and the Scottish Green Freeport idea, in an earlier episode of Scottish Independence Podcasts (link below). Since then, we have been following developments with interest and we are delighted to have had the chance to chat to an acknowledged expert in the field of Customs Law Enforcement, retired customs officer Peter Henderson. Peter was the creator of the "six requirements" or tests, which SNP conference overwhelmingly adopted as a safeguard against the risks posed by Freeports. In this episode, Peter explains the thinking behind the tests and shares some of his vast store of experience from his 40 years in the field. Fri, 21 Jul 2023 - 53min - 1150 - Discovering our history - Loudoun Hill
Many Scots of a certain age complain of how little of our own history we were taught in school. In this episode we discover the Battle of Loudoun Hill, which took place in 1307 and was decisively won by Robert the Bruce. What is particularly interesting about this battle is Bruce's use of the landscape as part of his battle strategy, a tactic which also proved decisive in the later Battle of Bannockburn. Was Loudoun Hill a practice run? And how come William Wallace's name appears on the map of the battleground when he had been killed two years before? Find out all about it with the help of our guests, Random Scottish History's Jenny Eeles and our roving reporters Neil Haston and Lynne Dougan who attended the anniversary celebrations at Loudoun Hill last month. In this podcast episode we have taken selected questions from that event and spliced them together with clips from the Westminster Opposition Day debate which was also on the topic of what next for Scotland's future. The outcome, at this point, is not clear.
