I had an email from Maxinne in Scotland yesterday asking if I had any recordings of Father John Doe and as it turns out I have quite a few. So, I took 2 separate speaks he did (I have no idea where or when they were recorded) and used them to create this episode. This one needs a little context, I know many of you are familiar with the Joe & Charlie Big Book Workshops (I recently posted one 2.7.24) in 2005 at a J & C workshop Willie B and John W went through the 12 steps in the same manor as Joe and Charlie but using the 12 x 12 as the reference. Both workshops were presented side by side over the same weekend providing an in-depth look at the steps from both the Big Book and the 12 x 12 at the Boca Raton Florida Big Book Weekend held in 2005. Willie B of Spring Texas got sober in 1957, she was 48 years sober at the time of this presentation about steps 10, 11 and 12. Chuck C was from from Laguna Beach California, he was 36 years sober at the time of this speak. Chuck was highly regarded as a speaker over the many years he was an active member of AA, he is also a pretty funny guy. This speak took place at an unknown meeting held in Houston Texas in June of 1982. It is an excellent quality recording. He one of my personal favorites. Chuck is also credited as the author of the book "A New Pair of Glasses" in reality it is a transcript of a speak he gave at a mens retreat in 1975. Sadly the recording is pretty awful, a couple of years ago I attempted to reach Chuck's son to see if he would be willing to grant the rights to have it re-recorded and I was hoping he would be willing to do the recording (if you know who he is you can understand why). Unfortunately as hard as I tried I was never able to reach him, so on the slim chance any of you have his contact info please reach out. If you want to give the book a read it is out of print but lots of copies are still floating around. Joe McQ and Charlie P met in 1973, they instantly discovered their mutual fascinations with AA's Big Book. The study they met for regularly became something they presented at meetings, eventually becoming this workshop. At the AA International Convention in New Orleans in 1980, Wesley P, organized a lunch for 1,500 AA members from all over the world and gave away 100 Joe & Charlie workshop tape sets as door prizes. Invitations exploded, and within a couple of years Joe & Charlie were presenting about 36 seminars a year worldwide. He is telling his story about his first 14 years in AA, this was recorded in 1949. The end if this speak (about 6 min) is a bit of Dr Bobs last talk in 1950. There are no where near as many recordings of Dr Bob as there are of Bill W and the ones that are around are generally fairly bad, this one had a nasty hum, but it cleaned up really well and is one of the best I have heard of Dr Bob.
