Football Talk - The Yorkshire Post

- 277 - FootballTalk - Episode 251: Michael Duff in at Bradford City, Huddersfield Town's progress and was the extended international break a success?
On this week’s show, host Mark Singleton is joined by The YP’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall to pore over the latest news from the Yorkshire football scene.
They start off at Valley parade following Tuesday’s announcement that former Barnsley and Huddersfield Town manager Michael Duff would succeed Graham Alexander as the boss at Bradford City.
They then turn their attention to Yorkshire and League One rivals Huddersfield Town who, under Martin Drury have made an encouraging start to the 2026-27 campaign and sit third in the standings – just a point off a top two containing leaders Plymouth and the Bantams – following the weekend’s 3-1 win over Burton Albion.
Finally, the panel consider whether the extended international break has been a success – both for national teams and the clubs affected by not playing as a result of players being away on international duty.

On this week’s show The Yorkshire Post’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall start off by joining host Mark Singleton to discuss the extended international break and England’s performances against Spain – in defeat – and the Czech Republic – in victory.
They then turn their attentions closer to home and, not surprisingly, start at Valley Parade after Graham Alexander’s departure from League One Bradford City to Preston North End in the Championship – along with assistant Chris Lucketti. They also look at the leading candidates to take over the Bantams’ helm.
The panel finish off by turning their attention to League Two and the start to the 2026-27 season made by Rotherham United and York City.

On this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Tom Coates join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news and developments from the Yorkshire football scene.
We start this week with the clash between Hull City and Newcastle which ended in a 2-1 defeat and ended the Tigers’ unbeaten start to the season. While frustrating for manager Sergej Jakirovic and his players, there are still a wealth of positives to be had for the club going into the elongated international break.
Leeds United will also be going into the three-week break on the back of a strong 2026-27 campaign so far, extending their unbeaten start with a 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace.
The panel discuss how the three-week hiatus can benefit both Leeds and Hull with various players away on international duty and how each manager can best use the time they have ahead of a return to action in mid-October.
We also carry out a review how Sheffield United and Middlesbrough – our two Yorkshire teams in the Championship – will view their respective starts to the campaign.
League One is more congested in terms of Yorkshire clubs – Barnsley, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday – and we also cast an eye over how those teams have fared in the opening weeks.
Finally, Tom is handed the task of picking his Player of the Week before Stuart plumps for his Yorkshire Team of the Week.

On this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton and start off by looking at Sheffield Wednesday’s start to life back in League One, currently sitting top of the standings after six games with four wins to their name under Henrik Pedersen.
Near-neighbours Sheffield United suffered a blow when going down 1-0 against Wolves and although they sit mid-table, can their start to the 2026-27 Championship campaign can still be viewed as promising – or not?
Leeds United delivered a statement performance with a resounding 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday, catapulting them up to third in the standings. Can they now build on their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign?
Middlesbrough were left frustrated at just taking a point from their midweek tussle with visitors Millwall – but there remains plenty to be positive about, given they sit third in the standings and with the top four all locked on 14 points.
Finally, Stuart is required to pick a Player of the Week, while Leon singles out a Team of the Week from Yorkshire’s 11 Premier League and EFL clubs.
Thu, 17 Sep 2026 - 54min - 273 - FootballTalk - Episode 247: Barnsley, Hull City and Bradford City and the reasons behind their promising starts to 2026-27
On this week’s show, The YP football writing duo of Leon Wobschall and Stuart Rayner join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news and issues from Yorkshire’s Premier League and EFL clubs.
They start by looking at Barnsley who claimed all three points when they paid a visit to Blackpool in a 2-1 win in midweek – only to then slip to a 5-1 defeat at home to Stevenage last weekend. But has it still been an impressive start under Daniel Stendel?
Hull City have enjoyed a promising start to life back in the Premier League – their 0-0 draw at home to Aston Villa meaning they remain unbeaten after three games. They lost their first game of the season – as well as conceded their first goals - in the League Cup at Sunderland.
There is also time to discuss Bradford City’s solid League One campaign – sat fourth inn the standings after their 1-0 win over Mansfield Town at the weekend, while Sheffield United’s gutsy 2-1 Championship win at Blackburn Rovers in midweek offers Chris Wilder hope of being among the promotion candidates later down the line, despite going through a frustrating summer transfer window.
This week, Leon is asked for his Yorkshire-based Player of the Week, while Stuart comes up with his more impressive Team of the Week.
Thu, 10 Sep 2026 - 38min - 272 - FootballTalk - Episode 246: Transfer window winners and losers in Yorkshire - The YP FootballTalk Podcast
The summer transfer window proved to be another heady cocktail of blockbusting deals and late, late agreements as Yorkshire’s clubs looked to try and set themselves up for a successful campaign.
In the Premier League, Leeds United and Hull City adopted contrasting approaches, with the Tigers confirming six new arrivals on the final day of transfer activity, taking their net spend past the £100m mark.
Leeds were more reserved but still spent big, the most notable additions being goalkeeper James Trafford signed for £40m from Manchester City, while two new arrivals joined on deadline day to take their number of summer signings up to seven.
The signing of Eintracht Frankfurt's jet-paced winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya ended the club's search for a new striking option, while Nice left-back Melvin Bard completed his move on an initial loan.
All of Yorkshire’s clubs were busy with ins and outs and Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall joining host Mark Singleton to also discuss the deals for our Championship, League One and League Two clubs and who got the best deals – in either direction.
This week, Stuart is given the task of choosing a Player of the Week, leaving Leon to determine a Team of the Week.

Yorkshire derbies between Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley come under the spotlight, as does the stunning start made by Hull City on their return to the top-flight when they beat visitors Manchester United 2-0 at home.
Leeds United also got their season off to the perfect start, winning twice at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground in four days, following up a 1-0 win in the league on Saturday with a 2-0 midweek triumph in the League Cup.
Doncaster’s Cup defeat to Championship Middlesbrough also comes up for discussion before Leon picks out his Player of the Week and Stuart selects the standout Team of the Week.

On this week’s show, The YP’s chief football writer Stuart Rayner joins host Mark Singleton to reflect on the all-Yorkshire Championship play-off final between Hull City and Middlesbrough at Wembley last Saturday – a game that was settled by a late Oli McBurnie goal which took the Tigers back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
Leeds United lost their final game of the Premier League season when going down 3-0 at West Ham United who, despite the win, were still relegated to the Championship. But the loss does not detract from what has been a positive return to the top-flight for Leeds under Daniel Farke – who was able to keep a promoted side in the division for the first time in his coaching career.
The panel reflect on the highs of the 2025-26 campaign for the Whites and what they need to do during the coming summer months to ensure they strengthen their position.
What was for some people a ‘controversial’ England World Cup squad selection by Thomas Tuchel also comes under the spotlight, as does Oli McBurnie’s omission from the Scotland squad despite a memorable season with Hull in the Championship. Anton Stach’s failure to make the cut for the Germany squad is also discussed.
Fri, 29 May 2026 - 35min - 264 - FootballTalk Special - Episode 236: Sheffield Wednesday's Wembley 'Sliding Doors' moment that helped shape legacy of Carlos Carvalhal and Dejphon Chansiri
This week marks 10 years since Sheffield Wednesday were 90 minutes away from ending what was back then a 16-year absence from the Premier League.
But it was Hull City who got over the line and on to the riches promised by the English game's top-flight.
Last weekend, the Tigers booked their own return to the Premier League by beating Middlesbrough, but the Owls' fate had long been sealed with relegation to League One confirmed many weeks before.
In line with the anniversary of the Owls' trip to Wembley back in 2016, football writer Dom Howson has released a book - 'Carlos Had A Dream - When Sheffield Wednesday Dared to Dream Again'.
In a special edition of our FootballTalk podcast, The YP's chief football writer Stuart Rayner caught up with Dom to chat about the book, starting with the 'leftfield' appointment of manager Carlos Carvalhal before going on to discuss the 'sliding doors' moment of that heartbreaking Championship play-off showdown with the Tigers and the impact of former owner Dejphon Chansiri on the club - both then and long-term.

On this week’s show, The YP’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to applaud Leeds United following a campaign which has seen them all but confirm their Premier League status for the 2026-27 season.
Last week’s 3-1 win at home to Burnley – combined with subsequent results elsewhere – left Daniel Farke’s team seven points clear of the drop zone with three games to play. Leeds could be mathematically safe by the time they come to play relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.
Elsewhere, Middlesbrough will look to overcome their disappointment at missing out on automatic promotion from the Championship on the final day of the regular season when they take on Southampton in the play-offs this weekend.
Hull City will join them in the post-season, their 2-1 win at home to Norwich City last Saturday proving enough to see them leapfrog Wrexham and into the top six at the final ask. It leaves them with a testing two-leg semi-final against Millwall.
Are we wishing for too much with an all-Yorkshire final at Wembley?
Bradford City are also gunning for the national stadium, but first will have to overcome League One rivals Bolton Wanderers in their play-off semi-final in order to book a day out in the capital.
With Sheffield Wednesday condemned to League One for most of the season, Rotherham United long relegated to League Two, Harrogate Town became the third Yorkshire team to suffer the drop – dropping out of the EFL after seven seasons. The team assess their chances of getting back up from the National League at the first time of asking.
And, on the final day of the season, with their new owner David Storch in attendance, Sheffield Wednesday found the perfect moment to record only their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory at home to West Bromwich Albion. Things can only get better.
Finally for this week, Leon picks out his Player of the Week, while Stuart nominates his Team of the Week.

On this week’s show, The YP’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join Mark Singleton again, starting off the discussion with Leeds United’s latest Wembley outing, which saw them lose 1-0 to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.
By contrast, the tears of heartache at Wembley were a far cry from the previous day’s events at Spotland, when York City clinched promotion back to the EFL for the first time in 10 years in the most dramatic of circumstances against National League rivals Rochdale.
And there is also a chance to look forward to a nail-biting final weekend of the regular season for a number of our clubs, starting in the Championship where Middlesbrough are hoping to clinch automatic promotion, while Hull City strive to clinch the final play-off spot.
In League One, Bradford City are hoping to secure their place in the play-offs while, in League Two, Harrogate Town have taken their fight for EFL survival down to the last day, hoping a win – or even a point at home to Barnet on Saturday – will be enough to see them retain their status.
Finally, this week sees Stuart pick out his Player of the Week, while Leon selects a Team of the Week.
Thu, 30 Apr 2026 - 50min - 260 - FootballTalk - Episode 232: Leeds United close to safety, Barnsley's ongoing turmoil and York City's nail-biting end to the season

Then there are the remarkable events to pore over in the National League and the ongoing battle for automatic promotion between York City and Rochdale who have been locked in a battle at the top of the table all season – a contest that will be decided this weekend when the teams meet on the final day of the ‘regular’ season this weekend.
And it has been a significant week for Hull City who, following their 2-2 draw at Leicester City on Tuesday night, dropped out of the play-off places for the first time this year, replaced by Wrexham following their win at Oxford United. Can they bounce back?
Finally this week, Leon picks out his Player of the Week, while Stuart pores over the best Yorkshire Team of the Week.

YP football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join FootballTalk host Mark Singleton to cast an eye over the latest events in and around the Yorkshire football scene.
They start off at Old Trafford where, on Monday night, Leeds United took a huge step to securing their Premier League status for a second season after beating Manchester United 2-1 – the win moving them six points clear of the bottom three with six games remaining.
They then turn their attention to the Yorkshire derby between Barnsley and Rotherham United, which saw the Tykes claim all three points in their 3-1 victory and condemn their visitors to a seventh game without a win. The Millers then followed this result with a 3-0 defeat when they visited Wigan Athletic and in doing so, they sealed their relegation in the process. What next for both clubs?
Another all-Yorkshire clash brought together Sheffield United and Hull City, the Blades coming away with all three points to leave the Tigers looking over their shoulders in the race to secure a play-off spot.
Huddersfield Town who played out a 1-1 draw when they hosted Cardiff City and while they still have a chance to get into the League One play-offs, they need to start finding ways to close the gap sooner rather than later.

The Yorkshire Post’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join FootballTalk host Mark Singleton once again and start by casting an eye over Middlesbrough’s chances of automatic promotion to the Premiership – chances that took a knock when they lost 2-1 to Millwall and then drop further points in a 2-2 draw with Swansea City.
Hull City remain in with an outside chance of gatecrashing the top two but are likely to run out of time after a 1-1 draw at Oxford United was followed by a 0-0 stalemate at home to leaders Coventry City.
In the FA Cup, Leeds United edged through to the semi-finals for the first time since 1987 when they won 4-2 on penalties against West Ham after the teams could not be separated at 2-2.
And have Huddersfield Town reignited their chances of making the League One play-offs following their 2-1 win at Leyton Orient – the result leaving them just three points off sixth place with five games remaining.
And after Barnsley suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to play-off chasing Plymouth Argyle on Easter Monday could they yet be sucked back into a relegation dogfight at the bottom of League One?
Finally this week, Leon selects his Player of the Week before looking to Stuart plumps for a Yorkshire Team of the Week.

They start at Harrogate Town, Yorkshire’s sole League Two representative and who are almost starting into the abyss after a 2-0 defeat at home to Notts County combined with positive results elsewhere for their rivals left them bottom of the standings, four points from safety with just six games remaining.
If the Sulphurites do survive York City will be hoping to join them back in the fourth tier, locked in a fierce battle with Rochdale for the one and only automatic promotion spot.
The panel then take a look at the run-in from the Premier League down to League One, starting in the Premier League with Leeds United, who have eight games remaining to secure their top-flight status – currently sitting four points clear of the bottom three.
In the Championship, there are four Yorkshire teams each fighting for their own different reasons with Middlesbrough hoping to claim automatic promotion, Hull City wanting to book their place in the play-offs, Sheffield United wanting to have a strong finish to the season and Sheffield Wednesday determined to show that they have some fight as they head into League 1.
And, in League 1, there is plenty to keep us occupied with Bradford City still in the hunt for a play-off spot, with Huddersfield Town still hoping to join them in the post-season despite a recent drop off in form.
Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers, meanwhile, simply want to head into the summer in a positive frame of mind following testing campaigns, while Rotherham United will be hoping Lee Clark can drag them to safety with just eight games left to overturn the nine-point gap that currently exists between themselves and the team immediately above the drop zone, Blackpool.

Following last week’s sacking of Matt Hamshaw – which happened while last week’s podcast was being recorded – the Millers have moved swiftly to bring in a replacement in the shape of former Huddersfield Town boss Lee Clark.
He had a tough start when overseeing a 3-0 defeat at runaway leaders Lincoln City, but it will have given him an insight into the size of the task he has been handed at the New York Stadium. Off the field, Tony Stewart has transferred the majority stake in the club to his son, Richard.
Finally, Stuart singles out his Yorkshire-based Player of the Week, while Leon picks out which Yorkshire club is deserving of this week’s Team of the Week accolade.

The Yorkshire derby between Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United also comes under the spotlight, as does the Millers’ midweek trip to Bradford City – both games ending in defeat and increasing the relegation fears for Matt Hamshaw’s team.
Another topic, another Yorkshire derby, with Huddersfield Town returning to winning ways against Barnsley. The result strengthened belief in the Terriers’ play-off bid, while Barnsley remain stuck in limbo almost, still in sight of a late play-off push, but also having to be wary of the teams beneath them in the standings.
Finally, Stuart is tasked with picking his Team of the week, while Leon selects his Player of the Week.

Leeds United brought the curtain down on the weekend for Yorkshire, but required penalties to get past FA Cup fourth round hosts, Birmingham City – earning themselves a date with Norwich City, the former club of Whites boss, Daniel Farke.

Huddersfield Town continue to impress under Liam Manning, strengthening their play-off claims after coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Blackpool before then going on to lose to League One rivals Doncaster Rovers in EFL Trophy after a penalty shootout, a result which saw Grant McCann’s team progress to the last four.

Huddersfield backed up the 1-0 win over the Bantams with another one-goal victory – also on home turf – against another promotion rival in Luton Town. Bradford, by contrast, suffered a third straight defeat – the first time in almost two years – when they went down 3-0 at Lincoln City.
Middlesbrough have put a recent poor run behind them by posting four straight wins, helping them ramp up the pressure on Championship leaders, Coventry City, fuelling hope of a top-two finish, while Hull City have also hit form to solidify a play-off spot – but could it be more?
And does Sheffield United’s return to winning ways – with a 3-1 victory at home over Ipswich Town – mean they still have a chance of becoming a play-off contender despite such a dreadful start to the season.

Doncaster Rovers claimed three points in a 1-0 win against AFC Wimbledon – ending a slide of six games without a point – in what is hoped will be an overdue turning point in their season as they look to pull clear of the relegation zone.
Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle pulled the trigger on manager Lee Grant following an away defeat at Burton Albion, with the Terriers bringing in former Norwich City and Bristol City boss Liam Manning in to replace him in the hope he can ensure the club are in the promotion picture come the end of the season.
That aim starts with this weekend's derby clash against Bradford City, themselves pushing for automatic promotion, but who will be looking to bounce back from last week’s 2-1 defeat at home to leaders Cardiff City.
Lastly, Leon doubles up this time around to pick both the Yorkshire Team of the Week and the standout Player of the Week – see if you agree.

Thu, 02 May 2024 - 46min - 179 - FootballTalk - Episode 144: Barnsley's shock sacking of Neill Collins, Huddersfield Town's worst nightmare and Sheffield Wednesday's bid for The Great Escape
On this week’s show, The YP’s football writers, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall, join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news from around the Yorkshire football scene.
They discuss the shock sacking of Neill Collins by Barnsley, the Reds in a poor run of form, but still in the play-off places with just one game to go.
Huddersfield Town’s 4-0 defeat by Swansea City dealt their survival hopes a bitter blow and the prospects of them beating the drop with two games to go now look bleak, while Rotherham United looked to the future after appointing former boss Steve Evans as the man to bring them back up to the Championship.
Sheffield Wednesday were able to climb out of the bottom three for the first time since the opening weekend of the season and could clinch safety this weekend if they beat West Brom at home on Saturday and results elsewhere go their way.
They assess Leeds United’s automatic promotion chances after victory in a seven-goal thriller against Middlesbrough, who will be hoping to bounce back as a serious contender for promotion in 2024-25.
Sheffield United’s 4-1 defeat to Burnley also comes under scrutiny as the panel look at what Chris Wilder needs to concentrate on this summer.
Fri, 26 Apr 2024 - 55min - 178 - FootballTalk - Episode 143: Hull City's play-off push, Leeds United's top-two bid PLUS the relegation battle facing Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday
In this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to discuss Hull City’s chances of making the Championship play-offs. With Just three games to go, they remain six points adrift of sixth spot.
Leeds United’s hopes of clinching a top-two automatic spot took a hit at the weekend with a home defeat to Blackburn Rovers – but results elsewhere meant they didn’t lose too much ground on automatic promotion rivals Ipswich Town and Leicester City.
At the other end of the Championship table, Sheffield Wednesday are still in the fight to avoid the drop, both they and Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town sitting just a point from safety with three games remaining.
Also this week, Stuart picks out his star player of the week, while Leon plumps for the best team from Yorkshire over the past few days.
