Hello I'm Gail Nobles on the Podcast Oldies Show. Before I get started, I just want you to know about a Facebook page to follow calked Keep Our Music Alive.They remind you of all the great singers, music groups, and bands. That’s Keep Our Music Alive on Facebook.
From that very page, I found out about a group called Jimmy Briscoe and The Little Beavers.

In the 1970s, when The Jackson 5's popularity gave rise to many other teenage groups, five young men from Baltimore, Maryland were discovered at a talent show in Baltimore by music promoter Paul Kyser. They recorded a number of singles, starting with Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", backed with "Sugar Brown", in 1971 on Atlantic Records and then for the Pi Kappa label distributed by Buddah Records as one of its subsidiary/affiliated labels. Their album My Ebony Princess, released by Pi Kappa in 1974, was reviewed as a "top album pick" by Billboard magazine;[3] the title cut gave them their greatest success. The group's vocal harmony set them apart from the other groups, though lack of distribution left them relatively unknown to the public. Other releases included "Where Were You (When I Needed You)", "I Only Feel This Way When I'm With You", "I'll Care For You", and "So Sweet The Love".

The Controllers are a soul and R&B vocal group originally from Birmingham Alabama who had a series of successful recordings in the late 1970s and the 1980s. They made a beautiful song titled My Love Is Real. The song was written by David Camon. He was also a talented artist who passed away in 2016 in Birmingham Alabama. My Love Is Real was produced by Frederick Knight. He is also a singer, songwriter, and record producer born in Birmingham Alabama.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings,I Learned the Hard Way.They made a video for that song.it was like a movie and Sharon Jones was a great actress in the video. The backup singers were great in some of the scenes just singing.

I learned the Hard Way is a great song that you can feel. I Learned the Hard Way is the name of Sharon Jones & The Dap-King’s fourth studio album. It was released in April of 2010 on Daptone Records. The album debuted at number 15 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 23,00 copies in its first week. Upon its release, I Learned the Hard Way received generally positive reviews from most music critics.

The single I Learned The Hard Way is a song written by Bosco Mann.He is the producer behind the signature sound of Daptone Recordsas well as a bandleader and bassist for the Dap-Kings. He wrote an amazing song with an amazing sound. It’s a song that should be played forever on the radio. In my opinion, it’s a timeless classic.

Real feelings in a song and how you can relate to others is what makes a good song. “Im just Thinking About Cooling Out” is a really good song. According to discos.com, the single was last sold on Jan 14, 2023 on vinyl.

I loved his voice & and he would make quiet a bit of noise while playing the music. (Wolf sound) Yea, you might remember him most from his howling wolf sound. I loved everything about the Wolfman. Even his look.

In Dec. 1963, he took a demo tape to XERF, but instead ended up operating the station. For eight months, he aired The Wolfman Jack Show. XERF was the most powerful commercial radio station on earth.

I’m going to share with you now one of Wolfman’s commercials from XERB which the Wolfman moved to in 1965. It was another powerful clear-channel radio station. It was the sister station of Mexican radio station, XERF. I’m going to take you now back down Radio Memory Lane.

Today’s Topic: Chicago

If You Leave Me Now is a song by the rock group Chicago, from their album Chicago X. It was written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera and released as a single in 1976.

The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks, making it the first number one hit for the group as well as hitting number one on the Easy Listening charts. “If You Leave Me Now" was also Chicago's biggest hit internationally,

The song won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) (strings) for arranger Jimmie Haskell and producer James William Guercio[10] and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus, the first Grammy Award won by the group. It also received a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. In addition, by August 1978 it had sold 1.4 million copies in the United States alone. It has been certified gold and platinum by the RIAA.

I remember the song, If You Leave Me Now. I was a little girl when I first heard it. It was a sad song to me. It always made me think about a loved one in the same way the lyrics were written. It made me think as I got older that the writer of the song may have had some of my feelings. I’ve always loved the sound of the music. It was music that I could sleep to.

Today’s topic is about a group like the Jackson Five called The Eight Minutes. Their song is titled, Looking for a Brand New Game.

The group called The Eight Minutes came out of Chicago. In the group were two families. The Sudduths and the Goggins plus Juwanna Glover and Carl Monroe. They started out in the late sixties. It is said that the group never really impacted the charts though they had a very high level of quality in their records. I don’t understand that. They sound great to me. They were an awesome group.

They have other songs I think are great like, Take My Love Don’t Set Me Free, I Can’t Get No Higher, Find the One Who loves You, and Here’s some Dances. You can hear all these songs on Spotify.

It was a top 50 hit in the UK. Honest I Do Love You by Candi Staton in 1978. The song had a disco style and Staton had smooth style vocals. I love her background singers too. They had awesome and beautiful harmony. The band played the music well.

Honest I Do Love You is written by Dave Crawford. Considering the words to the song, he must have really loved someone. And Candi Staton performed the song so well. She brought it to life. The song was produced by Dave Crawford and arranged by Sylvester Rivers.

Skip Mahoney & the Casuals we’re a soul-funk-disco group. Together they were formed in 1965. The song, Bless My Soul was released in 1976 on the abet label.

It is said that the song is a rare oldie, and I’ve never heard the song until today. I’ve never heard of the group. There are so many great oldies that you might not have heard and this song is a great oldie. The group is awesome.

There are four men in the group. George Norris, James Purdie, Matthew Allen, and Skip Mahoney. Purdie could play and arrange and write songs. The group cut other tunes like “Your Funny Moods, (Seems Like) The Love We Had is Dead and Gone, We Share Love, I Need Your Love, Town Called Nowhere, I’m Looking Away From My Past, and Struggling Man.

Skip Mahoney and the Casuals are a great vocal group. Mahoaney has a shimmering falsetto.

“Remember What I told You To Forget” is a song written by Dennis Lambert& Brian Potter. It came from the Hard Core Poetry album released in September 1974. The song “ Remember What I Told You To Forget” was No.4 R&B/ No.25 Pop. It was a song that had originally been cut by The Four Tops.

The group Tavares is also known as the Tavares Brothers. They are a soul, funk, and R&B music group. There were five brothers altogether. Many of their hits underplayed their R&B background and gave the group the image of being a disco act. You remember the hits: It only Takes a minute, Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel, and More Than A Woman. No matter what they were singing, I thought they were awesome.

The Tavares brothers had sung beautiful love songs like: A Penny For Your Thoughts & Never Had A Love Like This Before. And Remember What I Told You To Forget.

A classic wave is coming to splash in your memory. (Singing)

Instant Karma ( We All Shine On) is a song by John Lennon, released as a single on Apple Records in Feb. 1970. The song reached the top five in the British and American singles charts, competing with the Beatles “Let It Be” in the US, where it became the first solo single by a member of the band to sell a million copies.

The song Instant Karma may leave you wondering about it’s meaning. According to the urban dictionary, the words Instant Karma means swift and intense negative happening in someone’s life after they do something shady to another person.

To me, the song is saying two things. It’s also saying we all shine on. That is uplifting and positive to say about everyone.

I remember when Instant Karma was played in a Nike commercial back in the 90’s. It was my first time hearing the song by John Lennon. I think that was a smart idea. I remember seeing the commercial during the time when sports came on-on weekends. I thought to myself that the song was about winning and everybody winning. I think it was a good idea that they used the song Instant Karma in a Nike commercial because they showed people running, jumping, and playing sports. When you work hard in sports, you aim to win, and we all shine on.

The Soul Children was a vocal group who recorded soul music for Stax Records in the late 1960’s and the early 1970’s. They had three top 10 hits on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart – "The Sweeter He Is" (1969), "Hearsay" (1972), and "I'll Be the Other Woman" (1973) – all of which crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100. The group was formed in 1968 by Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

I love the Soul Children’s song Get Up About Yourself on the Album Genesis. The album was released in 1972. Get up About Yourself was a single written by Carl Hampton, Homer Banks, and Raymond Jackson. It’s an oldie but goodie. It may be a song that’s new to some of you. It’s a song that’s new to me. A song that I never heard on the radio, but now we can hear it today. Get Up About Yourself is a song that makes you want to get up.

In times like these, we need songs that talks to us. We need the kind of songs that send out positive messages. Forget about the dark and negative stuff. There are oldies, golden oldies, and classic soul hits. You might think of The Delfontics. You might think of the 60’s and 70’s. If so, you’re thinking of the good old days. Rhythm and blues, doo-wop, rock and roll, and sounds of soul.

There’s a broad category of oldies with different styles. But they all have one thing in common. The oldies are always heard. People never get tired of listening. I love the 60’s, 70’s, & 80’s. The music is real, the singing is real, the words talk about us, and what’s real about love. All that part about music is never out of style. That’s the oldies style.

The playlist of oldies is awesome. I love the old memories. There is no limit to oldies. There are oldies you may not have heard of before. Because the oldies play list can go past what radio picks out to play.

When I hear songs today, I think about oldies and that true vocal harmony. People were actually singing with or without music. That way is always real. That way is the oldies style.

Christmas will be here in a couple of days, and I'm thinking of a song by a trio group called The Emotions. They recorded a Christmas song titled, "What Do The Lonely Do at Christmas". It was a 1973 vinyl release.

"Tis the season to be jolly", they said. "But how can I be when I have nobody? The Yuletide carol doesn't make it better knowing that we won't be together."

Some of you out there might be feeling the same way this Christmas. But you can reach out and help those who have never had a Christmas. Reach out and help those in need. Use the gift that God has put in you.

To me, The Four Tops, "I Just Can't Get You Out of My Mind", is one of the greatest soul records of all time. It is a DunHill single. The Four Tops had left Motown.

When I hear the crackling sound of an old vinyl record, I don't mind. When the needle drops down to play The Four Tops, the record spins me around to the good old days of the 70's, to the good old days of life; to the good old days of love. I need to hear the musical sound of the past. I play that record over and over again to make it last. I just sing along. ....

A Classic Wave is Coming. A song that taught us about the good times splashing in the memory.

Michael Jackson said, "What I do, I don't want it labeled black or white. I want it labeled music".

I can't sound exactly like him, but that's how he would say it, and I can't sing no ways like him. MJ was an extraordinary guy, and I miss him very much. His songs taught us about dancing and made us feel good. He would sing about love. In life, we need to be happy, and we need to love.

On Fridays, leaving my job, I think about the one word that Michael would say in his song "Off the Wall". Live! Living doesn't mean throw your life away. Michael Jackson said in his song "Off the Wall" enjoy yourself, and in a song he would sing with his brothers titled, "Enjoy Yourself". When Michael was singing and dancing, he enjoyed himself, and we enjoyed seeing him. He also put us in the mood to enjoy music and inspired us. How many newlyweds have we got out there listening? Can You stay newlyweds? What do you think of when you hear Freda Payne's, "Band of Gold"? The song was released in Feb. 1970. The record label was Invictus and the song was written by Edythe Wayne and Rod Dunbar.

When I first heard the song, I heard it on the AM Station in the 80's as my mom was driving the car. She turned up the volume and said, "That's Freda Payne! Band of Gold! That's a good song!" And when I heard the music, I was hooked.

Thanks to both my mom and daddy, I fell in love with oldies, and Freda Payne's song was a major hit in the 70's. And when I first heard "Band of Gold" in the 80's, it was brand new to my ears. An older person once said to me, "Get away from them oldies! Tune into some new jams!" But you better believe the person that said that to me tunes into those oldies too.

There is nothing like the oldies. It's a good way to learn about love, life, and music. And all those remakes that we hear, where do you think they come from? I'll say it again. Ain't nothing like the oldies and ain't nothing like the great voice of Freda Payne coming from that strong sound of a vinyl record. (singing)

The Jarmels are a doo wop/rhythm and blues group officially formed in 1959 in Richmond, Virginia. There were five singers in the group. Nathaniel Ruff, Paul Burnett, Ray Smith, Earl Christian, and Tom Eldridge. They are best known for their only hit single "A Little Bit of Soap".

They met while attending Armstrong High School and while some sang at nearby Mount Olivet Baptist Church services in Richmond Virginia. In 1957, they initially named themselves The Cherokees "because we liked the name," said Smith — the last surviving member.

The start of their big break came in 1960 when they were at a local (Richmond) venue where Ben E. King was appearing, and they met him. King invited them to travel to New York and meet with various record companies, including Laurie Records. The Cherokees impressed Laurie after auditioning with King's signature song, "Stand By Me", and became the first African-American group that Laurie signed. The group was renamed The Jarmels after a street in Harlem, New York.

And "A Little Bit of Soap was written by Bert Berns. The Jarmels reached number 12 with it in Sept. 1961 and number 7 on the R&B charts.

We lost Little Richard, but he lived to get old at the age of 87. Hurry Sundown is a beautiful song, and it suits Little Richard and his voice. He had shouting vocals and could sing his heart out. Busy signal by Dolly Parton is another lost 45 record by Monument Records. It was released on Jan 1966. The style of the song is Bubblegum and soul. The song was arranged and produced by Ray Stevens. Dolly Parton is a great country singer. I'm surprised to know that she sang this song. It might be that Dolly can sing just about anything, but she is known as a country singer.
Dolly is also a great songwriter and actress. She has composed many songs including "I Will Always Love You" (a two-time U.S. country chart-topper, as well as an international pop hit for Whitney Houston).

This is Gail Nobles, and you're listening to a show about oldies. Today's topic is about a lost 45. The title of the song is (I've Been A Winner, I've Been A Looser) I've Been In Love by the Smith Connection. The style of the song is soul, and the year was 1972. The record label was Music Merchant. I could not find much information on the group. There are other songs by Smith Connection. It is said that the group made an album and that the album is a classic. I've Been A Winner....... just happened to be one of the songs by the group that I came across.

There are so many great songs out there by groups that I have never heard of; songs that I have never heard on the radio, but somebody knows about them. We're living in a day and age where lost songs can be heard now.

Larry Graham Jr. (born August 14, 1946) a beautiful sunrise. The same month and day my mother was born. The single "One In a Million You" was released in 1980. It was number one in the R&B chart for two weeks.

"Say You Do" was the third single from Janet Jackson's self-titled debut album, "Janet Jackson", released in 1983. The specially remixed version of the song appears on CD versions of Janet's debut album,while a shorter, slightly different version appears on vinyl and cassette versions of the album.It peaked at number fifteen on the R&B chart, and eleven on the dance chart. This was her third top 20 R&B and first top 20 dance single. An edited version of the song exists.

I'll never forget when Janet appeared on "Solid Gold" singing "Say You Do". She appeared with a red blouse;, black pants with a lot of belt and chain. Janet wore a key on her earring. It was her signature look in the 80's.........

"Whatcha Gonna Do?" is a song by the American rock group Pablo Cruise, from their album "A Place in the Sun in 1977." It was released as a single and reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Billboard ranked it as the No. 16 song of 1977.

In Canada, "Whatcha Gonna Do?' reached number one on the pop singles chart. It is ranked as the 24th biggest hit of 1977.

Formed in 1973, Pablo Cruise released eight studio albums over the next decade, during which time five singles reached the top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group went through personnel changes and split up in 1986, The original lineup - Jenkins, Lerios, Price, and Bud Cockrell - reunited briefly in 2004.

One of the main voices I remember hearing on the radio in the old days is Nicolette Larson. And I loved hearing the radio play down low hearing her sing "Lotta Love".

Lotta Love is a song written and recorded by Neil Young and released in 1978 and was also covered by Nicolette Larson in 1978. Larson's version reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and hit No.1 on the Easy Listening Chart. That's what I loved about it. It was easy listening. In the back seat of the car with the air conditioner running, I would hear that song while taking a nap.

Larson said she got the song off a tape she found lying on the floor of Neil's car. The song became hers because Neil had given it to her. To me, Lotta Love was just a simple song, but it had a lot of meaning. People were trying to have a relationship in those days just like today. People don't always see eye to eye in their relationship. A song like Lotta Love needed to be heard on the radio.

Bringing back Classic Waves! Remembering the Times. "You Little Trustmaker" was a song from the 1970's. According to the group's career history, the Times continue to perform with surviving original members, Berry and Burnett. They appeared on the 2003 PBS special, and it was one of the last times all five original members performed live.

It is said that the single "What You Won't Do For Love" is a blue-eyed soul style single recorded by Bobby Caldwell released in 1978. It was written by Bobby and Alfons Kettner. The song was number 6 on the Hot Selling Soul Singles chart.

Many times in my life I've heard the song, "What You Won't Do For Love". I've always loved it and still do today. The minuet I hear the horns is the minuet I stop to listen. The song's horn arrangement was written and recorded by Miami arranger Mike Lewis.

Remember that night when you fell in love at the drive-in theater? Some of you may not remember or even know what a drive-in theater is. It’s a drive-in movie where you drove up outdoors to a big movie screen to watch a drive-in movie in your car. For some of you, it may have been your first date. For you, it could have been really romantic and fun. Drive-in movies were around for a long time for a number of years. There are some still around. I remember them from the 1970’s.

I remember the drive-in movies where people showed affection with their arms around each other. And most of all, I remember sounds from the radio when they played hits like “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” by the Spinners. A 1972 song recorded by the group.
