Women Rewriting the Rules

Women Rewriting the Rules

Sumi Krishnan & Ashley Baxter

Let’s be honest. Being a happy, fulfilled and successful modern woman requires a new set of skills and perspectives that more of us need to be talking about! We’re having babies later, partnering differently, and facing challenges our ancestors never had to deal with, all while looking to create financial independence and make our unique contribution to the world within a fragile social and political environment. This is the Women Rewriting the Rules podcast. The show that helps you navigate those challenges while re-wiring the social conditioning that has affected us all since birth! If you’re a modern woman who wants to feel supported as you build your ambitious life – whether you’re looking to create better relationships, take control of your finances and career, pursue a passion, or achieve what feels like an audacious goal… you’re in the right place. Your hosts, a USC professor and a Harvard grad, are both high-achievers who have faced their share of challenges. Personal challenges like imposter syndrome, fears & insecurities as well as cultural challenges like discrimination, structural inequalties, and the weight of societal and familial expectations, They’ve both navigated their way through much of the maze and have something to say about it! Ashley, born to a single mother in small town Texas, worked her way up the corporate ladder at Fortune 500 brands and eventually into academia as an adjunct professor and curriculum creator.. Sumi, the daughter of immigrants, was nudged down a traditional path by her parents, building her first multi-million dollar consulting firm by the age of 26. After more than a decade subconsciously living for the approval of her Dad, she finally gained the courage to re-write the rules and is now a recording artist in LA. Here's the thing - you're not living in a 90's rom-com where you'd be stuck playing the role of a funny sidekick. This is real life. You're the main character. Women Rewriting the Rules will help you take control of your story, figure out what’s holding you back and set you up to start fulfilling your widest (and most practical) dreams.

  • 16 - How to find Happiness at Work when things are Hard

Are you struggling to find happiness at work — or in your professional life? Ashley and Sumi are here with a lot ofreal talk as they unpack an issue that a lot of us women face. It starts with reevaluating where you want to end up on the corporate ladder in terms of what will provide you with the most happiness.

That can lead to questioning whether you are even on the right ladder— which may seem like aluxury of privilegeyou can’t afford when you’re providing for your family. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t startenjoying life now, because that is what we are fighting for, now — as our hosts so eloquently put it. It’s about equal equality, and equal opportunity, and as women rewrite the rules, they need to do with some enjoyment in their lives!

What this looks like is having a squad in the boardroom who can call out when you aren’t getting validation for your idea. It’s about transition sentences like “Building off of what So and So said” that gets you taken seriously as a woman of color in meetings where a ‘mediocre white male’ is hogging the limelight.

Developing an authoritative voice, not second-guessing yourself, and taking yourself seriously are some of the tools that we can use to rewrite the rules of how we conduct ourselves, leading to more personal happiness and a resultant shift in the power dynamics. There’s much more inside this authoritative episode of Women Rewriting the Rules. It’s time to be unapologetically yourself!

“It might actually be more enjoyable for me to sort of ‘reset’ how I’m thinking about building my career, that would allow me to feel more happiness in that.” ~ Ashley

“Loving what you do takes effort.” ~ Sumi
