Bongani Bingwa speaks to award-winning journalist Mandy Wiener about former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi’s guilty plea to corruption and money laundering linked to over R1.8 billion in tenders and kickbacks , a plea deal that lets him avoid jail in exchange for cooperation with the NPA. Wiener says the case reflects a strategic shift in state corruption probes but raises a key question: Should the corrupt walk free to catch the powerful? Meanwhile, Jacob Zuma has suspended his deputy Dr John Hlophe and reversed Des van Rooyen’s appointment in a bid to reassert control within the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. Police are investigating the alleged attempted murder of businessman Brown Mogotsi in Vosloorus, and Deputy Police Ministers Polly Boshielo and Cassel Mathale have told Parliament they were not consulted on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team, exposing worrying cracks in communication and accountability at the top of the police ministry.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to political analyst and academic Asanda Ngoasheng about a whirlwind week in South African politics. From the Director-General of Social Development facing dismissal over alleged dishonesty, to the ANC in a scramble to unfreeze its bank accounts following a dramatic court order, the headlines have been nothing short of explosive. Tensions are also rising within the police service, with a public fallout between Lieutenant-General Sibiya and Provincial Commissioner Mkhwanazi raising serious questions about leadership and internal divisions. Corruption, accountability, and political fallout are dominating the agenda — and Ngoasheng helps us unpack what all of this means for the future of governance in the country.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Tshidi Madia, Associate Political Editor, as she brings sharp insight and political depth to another turbulent week in South African politics on The Political Desk. She unpacks the investigation into Kenny Kunene, found at the home of a murder accused, and questions whether this could damage his standing in Johannesburg or be another scandal he survives. They then examine President Ramaphosa’s suspension of Andrew Chauke, alleged to have enabled State Capture—probing whether this move is genuine accountability or political optics. Madia also reflects on the ousting of Nkabane and the entry of Buti Manamela into Higher Education, questioning if it's about performance or ANC factionalism. In her Politricking segment, she revisits her conversation with Helen Zille, drawing sharp contrasts between her governance vision and the current instability within the ANC.

Ray White speaks to Associate Political Editor Tshidi Madia about the growing backlash over Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s travel expenses, which have climbed to nearly R8 million since July 2024. The latest flashpoint is a four-night trip to Japan that cost taxpayers close to R2 million. While Mashatile defends the trip as “strategic,” critics argue it’s an example of unchecked luxury at the public’s expense. With little transparency or oversight, questions are being raised about systems in place to curb wasteful expenditure.

Bongani Bingwa speaks with Tshidi Madia, Associate Political Editor at EWN for the Political Desk as the week’s political drama unfolds across the country. First, the EFF’s Julius Malema finds himself stuck on home soil after a visa snag—blamed on UK bank holidays—derails his planned speech at Cambridge University. The British High Commissioner has issued an apology, but suspicions linger about whether bureaucratic delay tells the whole story. Meanwhile in Johannesburg, Mayor Dada Morero vows to tackle the city's crumbling infrastructure, but critics question whether his promises will yield real change. Up north in Pretoria, President Ramaphosa faces legal heat over his signing of the controversial National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill, as a court demands answers amidst growing public concern.

Power utility Eskom senior management gave the nation a briefing on the state of the power system yesterday.

They warned that load shedding remains a real threat as the system continues to have its vulnerabilities. Old coal-fired power plants remain a burden, while plans are in play to fix up build defects at their newest power plants – Medupi and Kusile.

Unveiling the economic construction and recovery plan in parliament on Thursday last week President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that, Government is fast-tracking applications for electricity generation for personal use as it moves to end crippling load-shedding and secure energy supply.

He said government would work hard to ensure reliable, sufficient supply of energy within by 2022…

Eskom Management on the other revealed yesterday that while it expects to have performed adequate reliability maintenance on its aged power plants to improve reliability by September 2021, the risk of load shedding will still not be eliminated.

So, what's the true picture here? To discuss that, Bongani joined by the Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter.
