Episode 220 of the Doc and Jock Podcast special one. For the first time in a long time Doc Danny & Coach Joe got together in the same place to talk about the snatch balance how it's the MOST important movement on the planet. Olympic weightlifters use the snatch balance to improve their speed & strength into the bottom of the snatch. However it's probably one of the most beneficial lifts for life. If you look at the movement, the requirements of flexibility in the snatch balance are so high that if you can master the movements it what would normally be a ACL tear in sport and makes it a knee sprain. The positional strength requirement of the snatch balance translate to an elderly person who's slip in fall is just an embarrassing moment rather than it being a trip to the E.R. On this episode we talk about how to mobilize for the snatch balance, how to scale it and then how to make it perfect once you own the movement. Check out our accompanying video here https://goo.gl/A2cEWn

The Foot Collective is a group of Canadian physical therapists on a mission to help humans reclaim strong, functional and pain free feet through foot health education. Every human has 2 feet and most of those feet aren’t working like nature intended. Your feet form the foundation for your body – without a strong foundation we compensate and eventually run into problems. Most people Nick sees with dysfunctional (not working properly) feet don’t have foot pain. They have problems upstream – low back pain, hip imbalances, knee pain – and most of those problems are a result of a problem with their foundation. Spread the word to anyone you know and help create awareness of the importance of foot health. Telling friends and family about The Foot Collective means giving them the power to change their health and access quality information about their body for free. Check out more info on the Foot Collective and listen to their podcast here http://www.thefootcollective.com/

However when they are leaving Danny's practice they'll have no problem hinging to get their purse/bag. The point is that often times the fear of pain is worse than the pain itself. Sal was 14 years old when he touched his first weight and from that moment he was hooked. Growing up asthmatic, frequently sick and painfully skinny, Sal saw weightlifting as a way to change his body and his self-image. In the beginning, Sal’s body responded quickly to his training but then his gains slowed and then stopped altogether. Not one to give up easily, he began reading every muscle building publication he could get his hands on to find ways to bust through his plateau. He read Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Mentzer’s Heavy Duty, Kubrick’s Dinosaur Training, and every muscle magazine he could find; Weider’s Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Iron Man and even Muscle Media 2000. Each time he read about a new technique or methodology he would test it out in the gym. Tue, 30 May 2017 - 1h 05min - 418 - E185 | Getting Back To The Barbell After An Injury
On Episode 185 of the Doc and Jock Podcast Coach Joe tackles a great question from listener Mitch Alexander about getting back into lifting after an injury. Via email, Mitch asks, I'm in the middle of a self imposed few weeks off of heavy lifting. Switched up for some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) to give the body a chance to recover. Any suggestions on how to ease back into lifting? This is a great topic and a common one! In fact Coach Joe is managing his own case of self imposed time off and just now beginning to ramp up barbell work. There are 3 keys to managing injury in Coach Joe’s mind. 1st Be proactive. Injuries generally happen because there is an imbalance in training. Be sure to sneak in opportunities to provide contrast to training sets and reps during your prep and auxiliary work to avoid injury. 2nd Assess Your Training Habits. Regarding the Sport Weighting it is easy to fall into chronic behaviors that can promote overuse injuries. Post injury one the first things you must do is look back through your training log and figuring out what you were doing to much of and limit that behavior. The worst thing we can do post injury is not train. The best thing we can do is adjust training. As Coach Joe relays his own experience with this he discusses how he limited his barbell work but added a lot more asymmetrical loading, rotational style exercise, and worked to establishing long time under tension. All of which contrast the behaviors that led to his most recent tweak. 3rd Integrate the Barbell back into your training program with movements that promote skill and positions, not load and intensity. As Coach Joe has worked for a few weeks with the movements described above and started to gain that old feeling he is also conscious of the fact that he is slightly de-conditioned, especially as it relates to the barbell. With that in mind, instead of working at percentages he is opting at working with a linear progression and going off of feel. He is also choosing partial variations that limit load like the drop snatch. Anyone coming off of an injury in any sport can pull a takeaway or two from this conversation.

Mon, 15 May 2017 - 1h 00min - 414 - E181 | How To Fix Shoulder Problems With A KB Arm Bar
E181 is a great short for anyone looking to improve shoulder health. Coach Joe discusses a simple adjustment and some programming options for the kettlebell arm bar. Linked below is Coach Joe working through the Arm Bar and another clip from past guest Doug Kechijian who rekindled Coach Joe interest in this movement. The major adjustment and tip in this episode is when the bell is up and you are on your side to relax your neck and take your eyes off the bell. Doing so forces your shoulders to do the heavy lifting and stability work. Regarding programming keep it simple! As a prep peice load and reps should be light. Why would you want to fatigue the rotator cuff muscle you will need for stability sake in working sets? The short answer is you wouldn’t. Its Coach Joe’s opinion that heavy arm bars are best utilized as a post barbell session auxiliary piece or as a stand alone shoulder strength, prehab or rehab piece. Gang this moves gives you a lot of bang for your buck but remember, Coach Joe is a Jock, not a DOC so consult a PT near you who trains. If you PT doesn’t know what a barbell is he or she will probably just tell you to not use one! The warm-up: how many of you skip this phase of your training? Or even worse just hit a couple rounds of Cindy or a casual assault bike ride and then get your barbell loaded and go? The sad truth is that most people & gyms put this amount of effort into their warm-ups and it is completely ruining workouts for athletes. Mon, 08 May 2017 - 1h 08min - 412 - E179 | How To Train At Home When You Have Kids
On Episode 179 of The Doc and Jock Podcast Coach Joe sits down to share his thoughts on how be successful training at home. Having a garage gym is great. The time you don’t waste in the car alone traveling to and from the gym makes it worth having. Also, as a dad who wants his kiddos to take up training I like having my kiddos around the gym. I want them to access the gym and equipment to tinker on their own. I also like for them to see mom and dad getting after it regularly. This aspect of a garage gym is also worth its weight in kilos. A 2010 article in the Journal of International Pediatrics demonstrated that children who perceived their parents as physically active were themselves physically active That said, to successful train in your own garage set up you need to have few rules in place. 1 - Figure out a home set-up to train at home and do it in front of your kids if you have them. If you train in front of your kids the perception will make them want to be fit. 2 – Carve out a designated space. Your gym space needs to be your gym space. This needs to be the place you get work done. I am a big fan of a compartmentalized place that is just for training. We don’t even park the cars in the garage. Now, we do store some things in the garage along with the training gear but the matts are for training and that is that. If you don’t have the space to carve out your very own training place, but do get after it at home, I would suggest setting up the same way, in the same place, all the time. My wife for instance likes to do yoga in the living room with the kids. When she does this she does it in the same spot and has a routine for setting that up, but more on that later. The point is your at home training space needs to be as consistent a training place as a stand along gym as possible. This will ensure for more consistent training. 3 – Have a pre training routine. If you are going to be training at home you need to set your switch and hit the go button! Regardless of the amount of time I have to train or the type of training I am going to get into I do a few things beforehand to set the mood. My routine consists of writing down my work, informing my little ones that daddy is hitting the gym, and setting my computer up for tunes. Yes, these are really simple things. But, they also ready my mind and my kids for the training session to come. 3 – Have rules in place I mentioned above that I like to have my kids around when I hit the weights. Check out this video from a recent session and you will see my son is a few feet away as I perform a Jerk variation. Inevitably misses happen and unpredictable events take place. Never, not once, or ever is one of those events allowed to be one of my kids getting hurt. In order to keep my kids safe while I’m moving heavy loads the kiddos know, and I check to make sure they are out of danger. One rule is that when Daddy is training kiddos have to be on the other half of the garage or off the training mats. As you can see Mason understands this and stays clear. Be sure to have, and most importantly, enforce ground rules for the safety of participants and nonparticipants. 4 – It’s not your job to throw them a party Now this rule is for those of us with kiddos at home while training is going down. It may also apply to a spouse or frisky friend so be sure to still pay attention if you don’t have kiddos. I don’t go out of my way to schedule events for my kids when I train. As I mentioned before I want them around training, plus I want them to take care of their own business and be independent – which mine are. I see parents over schedule, over stimulate, and underestimate their child’s ability to fill time – all the time. If you do any of these things your kiddos will be dependent on you to get through every minute of the day and that will inevitably eat up your training time.
