BEFORE THE 28 PAGES WERE RELEASED

On January 27, 2016, Elizabeth interviewed former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham.

At the time, 28 pages from the congressional investigation into the September 11 attacks remained classified.

Nobody outside a relatively small circle of government officials was allowed to read them.

    Bob Graham had.

And he wanted the rest of us to see them.

Graham had served as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and co-chaired, with Florida Congressman Porter Goss, the Joint Congressional Inquiry into the intelligence failures surrounding September 11. This was separate from the later, much more highly politicized "9/11 Commission Report." The Joint Inquiry completed its work in 2002, but an entire section dealing with possible sources of foreign support for some of the hijackers was withheld from the public.

Those became known simply as "the 28 pages."

When we spoke with Graham, they had been secret for nearly 13 years. Elizabeth asked him a pretty simple question:

If the purpose of investigating 9/11 was to tell the American people what happened, why were 28 pages of that investigation being kept from the American people?

That's when the conversation got interesting.

Graham couldn't tell us exactly what was in those pages.

    They were still classified.

But he could tell us where they pointed.

    SAUDI ARABIA

Graham told us the withheld material dealt primarily with the question of who provided financial and other support connected with the September 11 attacks.

And when Elizabeth pressed him about Saudi Arabia, he didn't exactly tell her she was looking in the wrong direction.

    Quite the opposite.

Graham made clear that the material raised serious questions concerning Saudi connections to people who assisted some of the hijackers.

There was an almost strange dance taking place during the interview.

    We could ask the questions.

    Graham knew the answers.

But there were details he simply could not discuss while the material remained classified.

So we kept pushing right up against the fence.

    Who classified it?

    Why was it classified?

Was the decision really about national security?

Why had the Bush administration refused to release it?

And, after seven years in office, why hadn't President Obama released it either?

Graham believed the long relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia played a major role. He argued that keeping the information secret was not protecting the American people and that Americans deserved to see the evidence and draw their own conclusions.

Then we asked him something that seems even more important today.

If the 28 pages were released, would that be everything?

Or were there other investigative records sitting behind those pages that would remain classified?

Graham's answer was essentially: there was more.

The 28 pages represented only part of the underlying investigative material, and Graham believed those records should eventually be made public as well.

    THEN, 170 DAYS LATER...

On July 15, 2016, just 170 days after our interview, the federal government finally released the 28 pages and suddenly we could see some of what Bob Graham had been carefully talking around.

The pages discussed contacts between two of the hijackers, Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, and people investigators believed, (or wanted to sell to the American people) may have had connections with Saudi government officials or institutions.

One of the central names was Omar al-Bayoumi, who met the two men shortly after their arrival in Southern California and helped them find an apartment and establish themselves in San Diego.

The material also examined other Saudi-linked individuals and financial relationships.

But there is an important distinction.

The 28 pages did not establish that the Saudi government ordered the September 11 attacks, nor did they constitute a final finding that senior Saudi officials knowingly financed the plot. The material contained intelligence reports, investigative leads, allegations and unanswered questions, some of which had not been independently verified when the Joint Inquiry completed its work.

The later 9/11 Commission concluded that it found no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded al-Qaeda, while acknowledging that Saudi Arabia had been an important source of private funding for the organization.

But that wasn't the end of the story either.

Years later, additional FBI records were released concerning an investigation known as Operation Encore.

Those records show that the FBI continued investigating whether Bayoumi and other Saudi-linked individuals knowingly assisted Hazmi and Mihdhar after they arrived in the United States. The FBI investigation specifically examined whether that assistance was provided with knowledge that the two men intended to commit an act of terrorism.

Which takes me right back to the question we asked Bob Graham in 2016:

    Are the 28 pages everything?

    FULL SHOW RECAP:

    Is that fruit actually real?

That's one of the questions Elizabeth is asking this week on Food Travel USA, and once again, the answer may be hiding in the fine print on the label.

We take a closer look at the rules that allow food companies to sell products covered with pictures and references to blueberries, even when what's actually inside may bear very little resemblance to the fruit you thought you were buying. Elizabeth's message is one you've heard from us before: turn the package around and READ THE LABEL.

There is some encouraging news on the food side too. Elizabeth caught up with Katrina Frey of Frey Vineyards, a company we've talked about and supported because their philosophy fits closely with something we've been saying for years: people deserve to know what's actually in the things they eat and drink. They talk about organic wine, what goes into conventional winemaking, and why Frey has chosen a very different way of doing it.

We also run through this week's food news, another Top 10, and some of the stories that have us wondering exactly how far the food industry thinks it can stretch the meaning of words printed on a package.

Then in Hour Two, the airlines and the Department of Transportation are fighting again, and this time it's over something every traveler should care about: knowing what your trip is really going to cost before you buy the ticket.

Airline fee transparency is back in the spotlight, with the industry pushing back against rules requiring clearer disclosure of fees. But not every airline is taking the same position, and we look at who is siding with travelers and who is fighting to keep the current system.

Then, because apparently getting passengers and their luggage from Point A to Point B without creating national news remains an unreasonable expectation, we have another edition of Airline Debacles.

We'll also count down another travel Top 10 before Elizabeth takes us somewhere completely different for this week's Destination Unknown.

It's two hours of food, travel, consumer information, a few laughs, and the kind of stories that usually leave us asking the same question:

Why didn't somebody tell us this before?

Food Travel USA. The truth about food and travel since 2010.

FULL SHOW: This week on Food Travel USA, Elizabeth Dougherty takes a closer look at why the Cavendish banana may be heading toward extinction as monoculture leaves entire crops vulnerable to a spreading fungus. We also examine troubling contamination findings involving jarred banana baby food, along with the broader question of how much parents can really trust what is marketed as safe. In travel, we cover airport delays, confusing airfare rules, lost luggage technology, and vacation deals that aren't nearly as generous as advertised. Plus, practical RV advice for dealing with a refrigerator that stops cooling, and a trip to New Orleans for Bananas Foster and then to the California desert for one of the strangest banana museums anywhere.

FULL SHOW: This week on Food Travel USA, Elizabeth Dougherty takes a closer look at several stories that affect all of us, whether we're standing in a grocery store aisle or sitting in an airport terminal. The show begins with Food News and Commentary, then pulls back the curtain on professional server training and why it can make or break your restaurant experience. A two-part feature on fertilizer explores how modern food production depends on it and why decisions made far from the farm can have real consequences for consumers. Elizabeth also examines what your food cravings may be trying to tell you and revisits a remarkable conversation with Dr. Terry Vrain, whose thoughts on GMOs and modern agriculture continue to spark debate years later. In Hour Two, Travel News, Airline Debacles, and Cruise News cover the latest developments affecting travelers, while RV Tips & Tales shares an important warning about RV consignment. The show wraps up with a look at Microsoft's Windows 11 privacy concerns and a fascinating trip beneath the Lincoln Memorial to discover a hidden piece of American history that few visitors ever get to see.

FULL SHOW: After an update on Food News, Elizabeth has a warning the mainstream media hasn't caught up to yet: the global fertilizer supply is running out, the farms are already feeling it, and your grocery store has a countdown clock that nobody in Washington is talking about. And the Top 10 Food Cravings segment reframes everything you thought you knew about willpower, revealing the specific nutritional deficiencies driving the urges your body refuses to let you ignore. You'll hear how Canada has been quietly erasing the GMO fingerprint from ultraprocessed food ingredients before they ever cross the border into the United States, with former Canadian government scientist Dr. Thierry Vrain as the insider witness who spent thirty years defending the lie before he finally stopped. The Windows 11 privacy segment reveals how Microsoft turned a routine software upgrade into a surveillance agreement most users clicked through in three seconds, with Copilot so deeply embedded in the operating system that your personal files, photos, and financial records are being vacuumed out in real time. Elizabeth also takes listeners underground to the Lincoln Memorial Undercroft, the forgotten chamber beneath one of America's most iconic monuments that has been hiding in plain sight since 1922.
