Tickford Racing chief Simon Brookhouse joins us for this edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by the National Motor Racing Museum. Thu, 10 Jul 2025 - 521 - V8SP: Lee Holdsworth (Part 2)
We’ve got a Bathurst winner on this week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by the National Motor Racing Museum – and he’s a return visitor! A lot has happened since Lee Holdsworth’s last visit to the podcast in early 2021, headlined by his Bathurst 1000 victory with Chaz Mostert at the end of that year, plus an unexpected swansong full-time Supercars season that netted him the Barry Sheene Medal. For the final part of our two-part chat, we recap the extensive celebrations that followed his Bathurst win – including the Monday morning phone call from a rival team owner with an offer to race full-time in Supercars the next year! Holdsworth talks about navigating changing his 2022 plans to drive for Grove Racing, his offer to race on into the Gen3 era full-time, working with a young Matt Payne, returning to Walkinshaw Andretti United for 2023 but knowing he had next to no chance of winning Bathurst, his return to Team 18 that would’ve seemed unlikely just a few years ago, and his new life outside of motorsport working in commercial real estate. For the first part of our two-part chat, we wind back to his last visit - and all the things that were going on at that time that he couldn’t talk about! One of those things was his co-drive deal with Walkinshaw Andretti United, which had yet to be announced. We chat about the uncertainty he felt in the wake of being unexpectedly cut loose by Tickford at the end of 2020, how his deal to join WAU came together, plus a lot of inside stories of he and Mostert’s dominant weekend at Mount Panorama. We’ve never had a guest reference ‘Kevin Bloody Wilson’ on this podcast before, but we have now! Lee also tells the story of how the team’s post-race inspection of the car revealed that their shot at victory came quite literally a centimetre from unravelling… V8 Sleuth Superstore >> https://superstore.v8sleuth.com.au/ V8 Sleuth Podcast Plus >> https://v8sleuth.supportingcast.fm/ Learn more about your ad choices. This week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Autobarn features Supercars race winner and two-time Super2 Series winner Dean Canto. A second-generation racer, we start the first leg of our two-part chat with Canto talking about what he’s up to now and whether we’ll see him back in a racecar any time soon. We then look back through the early years of his career, from coming to prominence in - of all things - a Maserati Ghibli, to landing a drive in Supercars’ brand new second-tier series and going on to become its first champion. He then describes his rocky early years in the ‘main game’, including a false start with an elite squad in 2001, a couple of years of enduro co-drives followed by a shot at moving into the championship full-time for 2003. However, as he describes, it was hardly a dream situation for a rookie driver - one who’d been signed to a 10-year management contract... Tue, 07 Jan 2025 - 493 - V8SP Mini: What Murph and Ambrose really said at The Cutting in 2005…
This week’s ‘Mini’ edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol is drawn from Supercars legend Greg Murphy’s first visit to the pod back in 2020. This snippet revolves around a regularly-mined topic come that special Sunday in October: his confrontation with Marcos Ambrose after they crashed out of the 2005 Bathurst 1000. We’d received so many National Motor Racing Museum Couch Racer Questions about it that we simply had to bring it up – and Murph didn’t disappoint with his recreation of what the pair said to each other post-shunt. The V8 Sleuth bleeper hasn’t been the same since… This Mini came from Episodes 66 and 67 back in 2020, a two-part chat via Zoom with Murph about his career to that point. Mon, 30 Dec 2024 - 492 - V8SP Mini: How siblings pulled off a ‘Bradbury’ moment
This week’s ‘Mini’ edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol features Nathan Pretty sharing a couple of tales from his rookie season in Supercars. In this snippet, Pretty talks about a wild moment in the early laps of the first race at the 1999 Winton round, where he and sister Nicole used an old Thunderdome trick to avoid a host of crashing cars to vault, Steven Bradbury-style, from the back of the field to the front! He also shares his side of the Bathurst practice crash later that year that led to Larry Perkins’ now-infamous synopsis: “Young bloke, cold tyres, f***ed up.” This Mini came from Episode 212 back in 2020, the first of a two-part chat with Pretty about his career. Mon, 23 Dec 2024 - 491 - V8SP: The rise and fall of AUSCAR
This week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol looks back at the rise and fall of one of Australian motorsport’s most exciting categories: AUSCAR. Created as the second-tier category at Bob Jane’s Calder Park Thunderdome, AUSCAR quickly became a star attraction in its own right through a simple formula that had, at the time, disappeared from Australian circuits: V8 Holdens and Fords racing head to head. We chat about how it came about, the star drivers, what triggered its downfall, where some of the cars went, and share your memories from an incredible period of racing. Wed, 18 Sep 2024 - 458 - V8SP: Matt White (Part 1)
Veteran broadcaster Matt White joins us for this week’s edition of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Castrol. White shares stories from his long career in television, which has brought him into the world of Supercars as a reporter, host and lead commentator, in particular giving incredible insights into the craft of commentating and some of the politics that happens behind the scenes in the world of TV. In Part 1, he talks about how he came to get involved in the media, from working for the Manly Daily newspaper, through doing radio with Triple M and TV news in Newcastle, through to landing a role at Channel 10 and being in the right place at the right time as Sports Tonight took off and the network became the Home of Motorsport, and eventually becoming the lead commentator for its coverage of V8 Supercars. He goes in-depth on his call of Greg Murphy’s ‘Lap of the Gods’ Top 10 Shootout run from the 2003 Bathurst 1000, and reveals why he left the network to move to Seven in 2004..
