- 47 - The National with Amber Waheed offer advice on how to avoid dishonest financial advisers | Ep. 45
One of the biggest personal finance concerns many people have faced over the years is dishonest advisers selling complex, high-commission financial products to unsuspecting investors that can lock them in for years.
Amber Waheed was one of them. Amber lost $80,000 after being duped by her advisor, Neil Grant into signing up for long-term investments she believed were low risk.
It is a familiar, heart-breaking tale for many. But Amber decided to fight back and took her case to the UAE regulators. This was the first step in what turned out to be a landmark legal case in the UAE when Neil Grant was convicted of offering financial advice without a licence.
Amber joins host Felicity Glover, the Personal Finance Editor at The National, to talk about her experience and share advice to victims of financial fraud.

Thu, 16 Dec 2021 - 36 - Are classic cars worth investing in for 2022? | Ep. 35
Can a car be a sound investment in your financial portfolio? Should you diversify your garage as much as your holdings?
For the automotive enthusiast, one way to diversify an investment portfolio is indeed to start collecting classic cars.
Most cars lose value immediately after they are driven off the dealer lot, but classic cars gain in value over time, due to rarity, performance, or special attributes. Classic cars, in general, gain in value more than other types of collectibles, although cars are more high-maintenance and more complicated to store than say stamps or comic books. The right classic cars can be valued into the several millions of dollars.
So, investing in collector cars, or collector cars as a form of an investment - If you’re going to buy with profit in mind, you really need have to know what you’re talking about…
In this episode, we welcome the founder of Expat Motors, Sonny Bains, to the show. Sonny has over 20 years' experience in the Automotive industry and he applies insight and analytical experience to the collector car market, and today he shares his perspective on investing in collector cars as an option and what that would look like to the average expat person.

Sun, 28 Nov 2021 - 30 - How much does fear play into preventing us from grasping perspective? Actor Will Smith on what skydiving in Dubai taught him about fear | Ep. 29
Over a third (34%) of people admit to a personal fear stopping them from doing something they wanted to achieve in life. Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings supported Franklin Roosevelt’s saying: ‘The only thing to fear, is fear itself’. And in many ways he was right - fear is what ultimately holds us back from many of the activities and challenges in life that could enrich us rather than damage us in some way. Many of us simply avoid fear, stepping away from situations or objects that trigger anxiety. While this may practically alleviate it in the short run, it also accentuates a feeling of failure and lack of confidence in the long run.
Skydiving is known to be a real catalyst for confronting your fear head-on and turning your life around, because following a sky dive everybody will experience feeling a huge confidence boost in their own abilities, the feeling of having achieved something ‘truly amazing. It is testament to how rewarding this adrenaline-filled sport can be.
In this episode, movie star, Will Smith, talks about what his experience of skydiving in Dubai and what skydiving taught him about fear, and how it changed his life, giving him the confidence to overcome any challenges in other walks of life.

Tue, 23 Nov 2021 - 29 - Inheritance issues arising from Investments | Ep. 28
Inheritance matters are inherently complex.
Having a will in place in their country of origin is regarded by many expats as essential planning when they move to live and work abroad, offering peace of mind in the event of a tragedy.
However, many Non-Muslim expats in Dubai are unaware that in the absence of a legally registered will in the UAE, the process of transferring assets after death can be extremely time consuming, costly and fraught with legal complexities. This could mean that assets accumulated during their time in the UAE may not go to their loved ones as they would have intended.
Joining Amber in this episode is Cynthia Trench, Managing Partner,ofTrench & Associates DMCC who have an extensive history in this area of law. Following the amendments in the Civil Transaction Code and the Personal Status Law in 2020, Cynthia explains the legal framework along with the types of wills that can be executed in the UAE in order to protect assets and investments. She also shares advice on how expats can prevent wills from being challenged and avoid being misled from financial consultants when protecting their investments.

Thu, 26 Aug 2021 - 21 - The Dubai police and the DED come through as the net closes in on Neil Grant | Ep. 20
Following on from episode 18 in The Great Fraud Fightback series we pick up the story after the Dubai police call Neil Grant to the station for questioning and the pursuit to obtain hard evidence linking the rogue financial advisor to financial advisory fraud to open a criminal case.
The task in this episode was to get around the ‘no contract’ issue as no court of law would even consider such a case, by convincing the police to request a statement from the Department of Economic Development (DED) evidencing Grant and Prosperity Management Consultancy were operating illegally under their business license, steering the conversation away from the lack of a contract and onto the license itself. Without a contract and without the DED statement the case against Grant was holed below the waterline.

Mon, 16 Aug 2021 - 18 - Part one of Maria’s story and why many domestic abuse victims don’t leave | Ep. 17
He swept her off her feet. She believed she had fallen deeply in love with an ideal partner and was set for the perfect family life.
First, he pushed her, then grabbed her, then squeezed her neck so tightly she almost blacked out. As she lived in abuse, she morphed into someone else. The emotional, mental, financial and physical abuse at home caused her to change into someone else. Someone her abuser created. A few years later she was standing on top of her apartment block.
In part one, Maria tells the dark story of her relationship, correcting misconceptions many hold about victims of domestic abuse, and explains why many domestic abuse victims don’t leave.

The top social problems teenagers struggle with every day – in coaching parents and their teenagers, these are always on the list – mental health, depression, bullying, substance abuse, obesity, academic problems, peer pressure– and these concerns you tend to find are multifarious but interrelated in many cases.
The first thing you ask is…where are they originating from?
Well let’s ask the teenagers themselves…because no one can answer that question better than them.
In this episode of Behind the Scenes, Amber is joined by Jai Joshi, Ahan Kalra Mathur and Sara Daouk - today’s teenagers, covering some key points and solutions and spreading awareness in the areas most shy away from, discussing how if we set the right foundations for our youth, teenagers can truly flourish. They explain the impact of creating a safe environment to open the lines of communication, the importance of stability in the home life and the crucial early warning signs that their teen may be struggling.

Thu, 29 Jul 2021 - 13 - Know your expat state pension and private pension options | Ep. 12
A big part of financial plans is retirement planning and a big part of retirement plans is a pension. A state pension offers a minimum income to cover the basics, whilst a private pension is a way of deferring some of your income now by putting some money aside for spending when you are older. When you have a pension, things start to get complicated when you move abroad and the duration of that work experience overseas; add to that the conversations around tax that needs to take place. In this episode, David Denton, a pension expert from Quilter International encourages expats to think beyond their current job and beyond their time in Dubai if they intend to return home or move to another country in the future. David discusses some of the complexities expats face and some of the things they need to plan for, in advance, and shares his mantra in financial planning. And most importantly - what figure do we need to save in order to retire, and retire comfortably? And what does that look like on a state pension and on a private pension.

Thu, 15 Jul 2021 - 11 - A bullet proof rogue financial pyramid plan | Ep. 10
Financial advisory fraud looks to be extremely complex in makeup, and it can feel really overwhelming to try to understand all the nuance and how it happens. But when you break it down, you will find it’s actually not. It’s simply manipulation against a backdrop where neither party can be held legally responsible. In this episode in the Great Fraud Fightback series, Amber talks us through a case study of how she was manipulated into parting with her savings and was essentially trapped in a Trust she had set up in Jersey via her financial advisor and Guardian Trust Company Ltd as part of a long term savings plan.

Amber is joined by Con Lillis, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Abacus, a financial advisory firm headquartered in Dubai to discuss how, as the lack of trust in the financial advisory industry grew, he felt it became necessary to separate client service from leadership and operation of the business. Mon, 14 Jun 2021 - 2 - Introduction - My story | Ep. 1
One of the biggest personal finance concerns many people have faced over the years is dishonest advisers selling complex, high-commission financial products to unsuspecting investors that can lock them in for years.
Amber Waheed is one of them and she lost her life savings after being duped by her adviser into signing up for long-term investments she believed were low risk.
In The Great Fraud Fightback series, named of course after the book, Amber deconstructs her story of how she lost her savings to a sophisticated financial advisory fraud and fought back against the system and won a landmark court case in Dubai. In this episode she shares the background of her case of how she met her financial Advisor and introduces the first pitfalls to be avoided.
