Mon, 22 Feb 2021 - 24min - 77 - Lunar New Year But Make It 2021
Surprised? We're dropping in your feed a bit earlier this week because we wanted to celebrate Lunar New Year with you guys This week we're talking about how Lunar New Year has become more important as we get older - especially if you're a child of immigrants and don't have many family near you. We understand that for many people, Lunar New Year will be a bit different. Just hours before we started recording, our city Victoria in Australia went into a 5 day lockdown so we're also spending it a bit different. In this episode, we talk about New Year superstitions and how some of them sound a bit unrealistic. We also discuss how even though we may not necessarily believe in many of them, we have kind of followed them by default because it has been drilled into us since we were young by our parents. We also discuss whether as millennials living in Western countries, if we will be continuing these traditions. This week for recommendation time, we are recommending you to get behind the #AsiansAreHuman & #TheyCantBurnUsAll movement to rise awareness about the increased hate crimes against Asians everywhere around the world. Fri, 12 Feb 2021 - 26min - 76 - Kung Fu Vagina
Another month, another cultural appropriation! This week we are switching things up. You might notice the show sounds a bit different and that's because we'll only be focusing on one topic per week to give us more time to really dig deeper into the topics we cover. Also, we're both expecting really a busy year for us personally so we wanted to make it manageable for ourselves. BUT let's talk about the problematic sex and relationship coach Kim Anami's music video called 'Kung Fu Vagina'. Anami landed in hot waters last week after she culturally appropriated Asian culture to sell and promote her online courses. There's a few problematic things about the video - It samples Carl Douglas' catchy but problematic 70's song ' Kung Fu Fighting' which has the oriental riff - The music video fetishizes Asian women - Anami wears chopsticks in her hair - Mismatch Chinese & Japanese culture: although the intention to appropriate Chinese culture, she wears a Kimino... - It uses the WONTON FONT, which further perpetuates what Westerners think Chinese characters look like Since recording, we have learnt that she's been deleting comments about those pointing out the cultural appropriation and Twitter users have found that she's publicly liked anti-BLM tweets. Do we see a pattern here? This week, Phil recommends watching the Korean drama 'True Beauty' which is available on Viki. Join in on the discussion on our socials! Mon, 28 Sep 2020 - 45min - 61 - One Year Later: Part 2
Hello Juicy Lemoners! We're taking a bit of a break this week so we're revisiting some of our favourite moments in the past year! Can you believe it's been almost a year since LEMON was launched?! Fighting anti-Asian racism in Australia Rising anti-China sentiments in the early days of COVID-19 led to an increased number of racist attacks towards Asian-Australians. In this segment, we discuss and share our experiences of the casual racism we faced but also talk about how many Asian-Australians actually don't know where the line is drawn for 'casual racism' because it's something that we've all grown up with and dealt with on a daily basis. Why do Asian people Anglicised our names? In this segment, we explore why our parents decided to give us English names and why so many international students coming to Australia are encouraged by their teachers to adopt and Anglicise their names. The Asian Black Problem Black Lives Matters has been one of the biggest movements of our generation but for the Asian community, it has always been viewed as a white vs black person problem. In this episode, we discuss why Asian pop culture and societies in Asia need to do better to further the discussion around colourism and BLM. Join in on the discussion on our socials! This episode we explore how this difference in names affects us. Shoes Off is a written, produced and edited podcast that educates, connects and inspires Asian Australians, because we don’t talk about culture enough. Mon, 20 Jul 2020 - 38min - 49 - Sandwich Generation Dilemma
Segment 1: The Sandwich Generation Dilemma As children of immigrants, should we feel bad for pursuing our passions and dreams when our parents worked so hard to move? A post of subtle asian traits went viral after an OP ripped up her university degree and declared that she was no longer going to work to make her parents proud but herself. Segment 2: Soft Ghosting Do you do soft ghosting? STYLIST UK Soft ghosting refers to someone 'liking' your last message or latest comment on their post on platforms like Facebook and Instagram where it's possible to react to an interaction, but not actually replying and continuing the conversation. So, although they're not ignoring you, they're also offering no genuine response. BUMBLE says that the real problem with soft ghosting is how unclear the signals being sent are. “Since your match has replied in some respect, it can be unclear if they are trying to end the conversation,” she says. “It also puts the person who sent the last ‘official’ message in a strange position, do you leave it? Do you double message?” Segment 3: Allan Liang from Big Brother Allan from Big Brother Australia joins us on the show today to discuss what it was like being a person of colour on Australian reality TV. The student, who’s name is Phuc Bui responded to the professor and told him that she felt it was discriminatory and she was going to file a complaint with the school board. He then responded with: “Your name in English sounds like F**k Boy. If I lived in Vietnam and my name in your language sounded like Eat a D**k, I would change it to avoid embarrassment both on my part and on the part of the people who have to say it. “I understand you are offended, but you need to understand your name is an offensive sound in my language,” he added. “I repeat my request.” Segment 2: K-pop fans trolls - If you know anything about Trump, it is that he loves bragging about his crowd numbers - At his presidential inauguration, he kept saying he had a bigger crowd turnout than Obama but it was later found that he exaggerated his numbers and asked a Whitehouse photographer to photoshop the official photos - Trump rally for election -> bragged 1m turnout for his first rally in months - He said no stadium will be empty this rally - A campaign from Kpop stans saw them rsvping to reserve up all the seats at the rally - Similarly, police asked people to submit photos of rioters and they all flooded it with fan cams Segment 3: Josh Thomas and coon cheese (10 mins) - So, Josh Thomas has apologised for his comments about diversity in the arts last week - It all started after the Australian actor and comedian tweeted a photo of Australian cheese brand Coon implying that the brand should re-name its cheese because of the racial slur - Twitter was quick to re-share a video of Josh Thomas talking about diversity on an all white panel at a writer’s festival. - Michelle Law: The reason that Josh Thomas video is so disturbing is that people we think are on our side are not. White moderates are more dangerous than outright racists. - "This is about the broken, racist society in which we live, the way that racist society dictates who gets to tell stories, and how that panel is a part of and reflects these issues,"

Should we view someone greeting us Ni Hao Ma as language appreciation? What makes you Pufferfish? - Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby who released critically acclaimed Nanette has returned with a new Netflix special called Douglas - In the show, she talks about what makes her instantly outraged, even at the mention of it. Some things that makes her blow up like a puffer fish are: paleo diets and people Americanised their language - What makes you pufferfish? Making a show for white Australia - Big Brother returned for the first time in 6 years and the first 3 contestants eliminated from the show were people of colour - Fijian-Australian Laura was first to go, followed by ‘confident and loud’ Chinese Australian housemate Allan Liang and then Korean-Australian SooBong Hwang. - People of Colour contestants are chosen to be loud and have strong personalities whilst cauasian contestants are ‘everyday joes’ - Caucasian Examples: Zoe is a caring teacher and mum of 2, Ian loves nature and science, Chad is a hot tradie - PoC examples: Allan is the loud Asian guy who’s in it to win it. - Laura is pro-black, vegan and doesn’t care what people think - Angela (who is Kenyan) is unapologetic with strong opinions - Do you think that producers are casting PoC for entertainment value or for relability? Malaysia's Miss Universe says black people should 'relax' - Last week Malaysia’s Former Miss Universe Samantha Kayty posted an Instagram story about George Flloyd saying that ‘black people should relax’ - https://twitter.com/lilasianthiccie/status/1267347193582612480/photo/1 - To Black People, relax. Take it as a challenge, makes you stronger. You chose to be born as a ‘coloured’ person in America for a reason. To learn a certain lesson. Accept it as it is, till now hunger and poverty still exist. It is what it is.It’s evitable . Best you can do is remain calm , protect your heart and don’t allow it to crumble. That’s your responsibility. Of course this is to the ones who understand this level and state of mind. Not for everyone. Everyone grows at a different rate. The Asian Black Problem - We need to talk about how what’s happening right now isn’t a white vs black thing, we need to take a hard look at ourselves as well and realise that we have a black problem in Asia and Asian culture - A lot of us who are children of immigrants have a trouble communicating with our parents because of our broken mother tongue but there’s been a movement to start a conversation with Asian parents by sending them translated open letters why BLM is important to talk about - We’ve talked a lot about the racism Asians around the world were facing during this pandemic. If we thought that was bad, imagine what it’d be like to be a black person fearing for your life every time you leave your house because you’re scared of being pulled over by the police and getting shot - A McDonald’s in China bans black people during coronavirus - So many examples of blackfacing in mainstream media in China e.g. impersonating an African woman on national TV - KPOP - Yoon-mirae who is a respected rapper andis bi-racial has spoken about the racism discrimination she’s faced in Korea - Kiya interview with Asian Boss: backhanded compliments: “You’re pretty for a black person “ “You’re different to other black people because you’re skinny” - Beauty standards -> TONYA TKO - https://www.facebook.com/melanie.glico/posts/10156779441516534 - Cambodia: Chinese or fair skin people are seen as more important, if you’re darker, they call you ‘ah kmao’ which literally means black person in a degrading way - What do you think needs to happen for the world as a society to change?

When the cooks entered the kitchen, they were greeted with a Mystery Box unlike anything they had been presented with before. Instead of being given set ingredients, each contestant was presented with a photo from their childhood. While clearly an emotional trip for everyone cooking, the photos hit a lot harder for the people of colour in the room. Namely, for Khanh and Reynold who broke down in tears while talking about their photos, which reminded them of their struggles growing up. *** MasterChef’s Reynold ‘truly sorry’ for past homophobic comments - QNews MasterChef Australia favourite Reynold Poernomo has “sincerely and deeply” apologised after homophobic comments from six years ago resurfaced. The contestant in the Network 10 cooking show said he was ashamed of the comments, posted online back in 2014, and they don’t reflect his views now. Reynold’s posts on an online bodybuilding forum, under the username ReyReyy, suggested gay people were “freaks” in response to news a Disney TV series featured gay characters. “I wish the world made a united decision where they will capture all gay people and put them on a remote island full of gays,” the then-20-year-old wrote. “That way straight ppl (people) will be happy and the freaks can go on and f*** themselves.” Reynold also commented on a separate thread titled: “Is homosexuality a mental illness?” “Yes, end of thread,” he replied. Reynold posted the homophobic rant just months before he first appeared on the Network 10 show’s seventh season in 2014. ******* YOUTUBER MYKA STAUFFER REVEALS ADOPTED SON WITH AUTISM HAS BEEN PLACED IN A NEW HOME: 'HE NEEDED MORE - Independent UK YouTuber Myka Stauffer and her husband James have announced their adopted son Huxley has been placed in a new home nearly three years after he was adopted from China. Mon, 27 Apr 2020 - 33min - 36 - Are Asians Really the Reason There's a Pandemic?
Due to COVID-19, many Asian people around the world are experiencing heightened racism like nothing before. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 originating from Wuhan, China, hygiene practises in Asian countries and culture are being questioned by the global community. Videos like these are damaging to the Asian community because it generalises all Asian people and allows people to write hurtful comments like: “Imagine the habits they have behind closed doors especially when they work in the food industry” - one user wrote under the video Sure, it can be easy to just say all Asians are dirty and unhygienic (rewind) but perhaps first... maybe we should talk about some useful hygiene practises. #1 -No shoes in the house You know you’re at an Asian household when you see a massive shoe rack at the front door. Almost in every Asian house, guests are required to take off their shoes before entering the house. The reason is quite simple - there is a lot of germs and bacteria that you collect from your outdoor activities - According to the University of Arizona your shoes have 421,000 bacteria! So, please. Take off your shoes before you enter your house! #2 - Hand washing dishes There’s a lot of jokes about Asian parents not using dishwashers and preferring to hand-wash each plate. But if there was one thing that we all learnt from COVID-19, it is how important using soap and disinfectants are. When Asian people wash dishes, we make sure that each plate is scrubbed with soap and washed off with fresh clean water - no soaking it all in the same old water! #3 Showering before sleeping It is the old-age debate in the Western world about whether to shower in the morning or at night. But in Asian culture, we get taught by our parents to change into home clothes when arriving back home and taking a nice warm shower before bed. The reason? You’re covered in sweat & germs throughout the day and you don’t want to bring all of that back into your home. And plus, it’s relaxing to have a warm shower before bed! #4 Wearing a mask when you’re sick In the early days of COVID-19, many people in the Western world were confronted and offended when Asian people began wearing face masks.. However, fast-forward a month or two later, there is an international shortage of masks. What most people don’t realise is that, Asian people wear face masks to prevent getting other people sick. [00:01:03] I don't it would be good how to explain it. Our director. [00:01:08] Look, I was going for like an 80s or 90s theme, so I Googled 80s, 90s fetish shit with fruits because, you know, we have the LEMON show and people just posing with fur in a very weird way. So with I decided, hey, Phil, why don't we just take off our shirts and pears with fruit so mildly erotic? [00:01:25] Join us first time I'm watching gay porn. What was that like? No, it's not your first time. Not your first time. Oh, I don't know. It was it was an experience. [00:01:39] We had some really weird shots involving tops. [00:01:43] And I was a bit but also bit conscious. Were you? Yes. You know, the thing is, you're conscious about it because we live in a neighbourhood where old, like everybody knows each other. And the windows were put on a show for the night. And we it just happened that we'll furnish having a photo shoot just as school was finishing as well. So I had the school boundaries. Right. Because you look quite close with school as well. Did you? [00:02:06] I was distracted, too. Distracted by our beautiful bodies, say. [00:02:11] So how is everyone's week this week? I was pretty good. I did a lot of songwriting this week. No mental breakdown. So that's pretty good. Positive. Any new hits this week that we can expect to hear soon? We did. [00:02:23] Oh, we did write or Bradner. We wrote a song called Sweats. [00:02:28] Was it actionable? It was very action of our lyrics. It's the one you showed me. You know, it is different in different ones. That was a Chinese song on an English song. Yes. We've been writing. Working like crazy. Trying to make sure that we get those demos out. But yeah. What about you feel? How was your week? [00:02:44] My week has been pretty hectic. Had a very hectic morning. We did my doughnut finish shoot for our new menu this this morning. Please refer to the actual audio file for any quotation or referencing***** [00:00:14] Hello, hello, hello and welcome to the LEMON Show, the show giving you the squeeze on pop culture with an Oriental lens. Well, like that introduction that's my name is Thomas Tan. And I'm Philip Kuoch. And coming up later on the show, we speak to Ophie Ho, who is a go boss and how she's transforming women's lives around Australia with her business. But first, how is your week? Had a very fun week. Actually, we went to the Pentatonix concert. We did. [00:00:41] And I swear, I feel like because I like an acapella group. Right. I feel like everyone that was at the concert was like a sing off, because when you want to get this crouse's sing it just sing like a massive choir. Anyone Senate. Amazing. [00:00:54] I think you can actually see the hard work and the dedication like the years that it takes for you to get to know your band members as well as know exactly what you have to do because harmonies are hardly telling you. It's like you have to sing in perfect pitch key and get to know exactly where to go. Boop, boop, boop. If you miss it like a doo doo or a bup bup. That means that you pretty much share the whole whole group off. [00:01:14] I love how you appreciate, like, you know, the music side of it. For me, the whole time I was thinking about was the thing about the business side. I was like probably the most profitable band in the world because we we did discuss a little bit how much they were earning that night. Because like they didn't have any bandmates. It's just that making sounds of their mouth. So so like they didn't have to hire like dancers, all a bandmates. It was just the making sounds of their mouth. But they got sick. [00:01:40] If one of them or two of them got sick, then like concerts cancelled. [00:01:43] Let's take a live look now outside of work. Ariana Grande, they lick and spit on the merchandise. There can be a hundred people in the room. Rise and shine. China. China. China. China. China. China. China. [00:02:04] We also just watched the Harlequin movie. Maybe like two hours ago. And I felt that it was incredible what they consider so well. And Magor, Robbie's acting is phenomenal. [00:02:15] Oh, she's good. I know the little girl, the Asian go who's in the movie as well. She was really funny. [00:02:21] I thought she was like, I'll tell you know, I thought that she was like an 18 or playing like that. And like they normally do in Hollywood. But you gewgaws, she's actually 13 years old. [00:02:27] She's 13 and she's in critical for her age. It was really funny the whole time while watching that movie. I was just thinking like, wow, like we talked to Jenny earlier this week. [00:02:36] Our friend Jenny, she's in L.A. right now doing pilot sea...

The show giving you the squeeze of pop culture. As always you're joined by Thomas Tan, which is me and Phillip Kuoch. [00:00:24] That is me. And this week my voice isn't cracking. Hello. [00:00:28] Coming up today on the show. Why was Justin Bieber in tears after talking about Billy Eilish in a recent interview? [00:00:35] And Parasite, is being hailed as a big shift towards inclusion. But does it really change anything? And joining us on the show today, we talk to a makeup guru and trends activists Kara Tran. But first, how is your week? [00:00:51] I'm just wondering what we did this week. But this week has been a big blow for me because of Valentine's Day. So as you guys know, I earn a donut company. And as part of that company, we make Derek gift boxes and did it because of stuff like that. So Valentine's Day was one of our biggest days of the year where people order declaring arts and days for their loved ones. And yes, so Friday was a big day. And thank you for helping me, Thomas. You're most welcome. How did you feel? Have you ever recovered from the Friday news? [00:01:20] It wasn't too bad. I think last year was a lot worse. And this year? This year, a lot more organized. But you woke up at 2:00 a.m.. I did. [00:01:28] And I woke up at 3:00 a.m. But knowing that, it's just that even the days leading up towards I was working like 10, 12 hours, Ali, days preparing everything for its big day, but everything went smoothly compared to last year. [00:01:40] So this year, we did about 200 deliveries and 20 orders, which is insane amount of orders. We had about 15 drivers going out to deliver all around Melbourne. And yeah, thanks to you, it all went very smoothly. Helps keep everything intact. [00:01:55] Yes, I did. But I'm surprised by how serious people take Valentine's Day. Yeah, I like because it was it was a crazy day and there's a lot of orders going through. [00:02:04] Obviously, we're gonna miss at least one or two doughnuts. I want to kind of see items. But you tell me how, like some people like, dude, it even gets like just a chocolate rose. Yeah. [00:02:12] They went batshit crazy. They did have a customer who said we ruined her Valentine's Day because we fought to include a chocolate rose. Whoops. But look, these things happen. I think I'm really proud of the way we handled things. I think very smoothly. We've only gone to complaints about 200 or so. That's pretty good. Right. That's like 1 percent to my treats. [00:02:35] You did take me to get a massage afterward. I did. And wasn't it a great massage? Holy. OK. I I've enjoyed this massage place. Well, I'm going to crash course I. And give them like the name ism Holiday Inn Holiday called Holiday Inn and Oakley. It looks like a very dodgy area. And honestly, from the outside, it looks like a pl...
Mon, 17 Feb 2020 - 53min - 24 - The Newtro trend
Hello, hello! Welcome to this week's episode. On today's episode, Tom breaks down during the recording after we discuss about the story of Korean singer Yang Joon-il, also dubbed as the 90's G-Dragon. If you're not aware of his story, the singer was an up and coming singer brought from America to Korea. He wasn't very fluent in Korean and used to incorporate a lot of English into his music at a time where Korea's relationship with the English speaking world was not looked at positively. He was literally unfairly kicked out of the country due to his English. He went back to America and became an English teacher before spending most of his life as a waiter in a restaurant. Thanks to a trend in Korea called 'Newtro' millennials discovered the G-Dragon lookalike and learnt about his story. His story touched the nation and a search began to search for him. After a gruelling long search, a TV show in Korea found the singer and he was able to perform his songs again after 30 years. We also talk about the Super Bowl half time and how Shakira and Jennifer Lopez KILLED it. Plus, there's a Christian activist who's trying to sue them for trillions of dollars for the 'inappropriate' performance - his words, not ours. There was also a 90's magazine competition running and the prize was the opportunity to 'sleep' with US President Donald Trump. Any takers? AND FINALLY, we discuss the rules of texting. If you're texter, make sure you follow these rules! Mon, 10 Feb 2020 - 43min - 23 - Why Taylor Swift talking about her eating disorder is important
Hello our juicy lemons! This week we have finally recovered and feeling like crap on last episode (we had one hour's sleep and put together the show last minute, sorry!) On today's episode, we talk about the recovery from our trip in China and how we actually thought we had the coronavirus. Thomas was showing similar symptoms and so he went to the hospital and was isolated. Long story short, we freaked out for no reason and it turned out to be a different kind of virus. Here's what discussed this week: James Corden responds to reports that he actually doesn’t drive in Car Pool Karaoke Late night talk show host James Corden has responded to rumours that actually doesn’t drive in his hit segment Car Pool Karaoke. A video of him and Justin Bieber filming a segment went viral this week of their car getting towed. It was viewed more than 13m times. He said on-air that he is normally driving unless the segment required some dangerous things such as dancing or required a lot of attention. In this case, the segment with JB was towed because producers thought it would be more safe. Taylor Swift Talks About Eating Disorders in New Netflix Doc: Why That Matters Taylor Swift’s new documentary on Netflix has dropped and she made several candid revelations about her life. The singer reveals that she’s now learnt to not look pictures of herself every day because it can trigger her. "You don't ever say to yourself, 'I have an eating disorder,' but you know you're making a list of everything that you put in your mouth that day and you know that's probably not right, but then again there's so many diet blogs that tell you that's what you should," she says. HBO to remake ‘Parasite’ into English series HBO has announced that they’ll be re-making Bong Joon-ho’s blockbuster hit ‘Parasite’ into an English series. The news comes after the Korean film has broken records left and right and scoring nominations and wins at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and SAGs awards. Why does Hollywood have to keep re-making Asian cinema and not just appreciate it for what it is? Bong’s speech at Golden Globes: “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” Billie Eilish got the iconic sound in 'Bad Guy' from Sydney!! While the Grammy Award winner chatted to Rolling Stone recently about her hit song 'Bad Guy', she revealed the inspiration behind the famous tune. She said that she was out for a walk in Sydney crossing the road with her mum before hearing the ‘doop doop’ waiting sound at the crossing. She recorded the tune and brought it back to her brother and incorporated it into ‘bad guy’. Does Anyone Have a ‘Personal Life’ Anymore? How do you respond when someone asks you ‘what do you do in your personal life?’ We recently came across an essay which talked about whether or not ‘personal life’ existed anymore in this day and age due to the rise of social media, people turning hobbies into hustles, finding ways to make their lives more efficient and turning their selves into ‘brands’. So what does a personal life in this day and age mean? Mon, 27 Jan 2020 - 42min - 21 - CHAT: How to start a viral blog and donut empire with Phillip Kuoch
HELLO! We're back! Hope everyone enjoyed their break - we certainly did! This episode is a bit different because we recorded it while we were pre-gaming/pre-drinking before a night out, so the episode is a bit wild. During our break we were featured by Apple Podcasts and Castbox so we thought we would start the year with a little chit chat with ourselves instead of a special guest so that our lovely new listeners can get to know us a bit! We did record a get-to-know episode with our other co-host Tom but we decided at the last hour to pull the episode because he wasn't ready to tell his story yet. ANYWAY - in this episode you will get to know our other co-host Phillip Kuoch who at the age of 15 started a viral k-pop blog called hellokpop, which at it's peak had 4 million monthly readers. He then went on to start his own doughnut empire called Goldeluck's Doughnuts. We'll let Phil do the talking because he certainly rambles on a lot when he's tipsy... Sun, 01 Dec 2019 - 01min - 16 - CHAT: What it's like working in China's entertainment industry with Jenny ZhouHELLO and welcome to this week’s chat with LEMON.
This week we are joined by a really good friend of the show, Jenny Zhou
She was our first guest on the show and we got so much great feedback on Jenny’s energy
We interviewed Jenny a while back, right after she had just come back home to Melbourne after a stint in LA auditioning for TV pilots and movies
When it comes to breaking the Asian mould, Jenny’s the girl.
Right after graduating high school, Jenny did one semester of law school before deciding that she wanted to go to a Shanghai acting school.
She made the most of her time there and broke into China’s entertainment industry.
She was a host of a popular kids music show, had her own daily morning radio breakfast show AND even had roles in several Netflix series.
In this chat, we discuss about her reason behind moving to China to pursue a career and how much the entertainment industry in Australia has changed for aspiring Asian performers.
We hope you enjoy this chat with Jenny, here’s Jenny.

Wed, 27 Nov 2019 - 51min - 15 - Why Asians can't break through the 'bamboo ceiling'Welcome to another week of LEMON. This week we discuss: Rebel Wilson has announced she's making a movie about K-pop and Asian Twitter is NOT HAPPY. The synopsis: “Seoul Girls,”follows a Korean American high school girl and her friends who enter a worldwide talent competition, which seeks the opening act for the world’s biggest K-pop boy band. The girls will get help from “an ex-member of a British girl group and a former K-pop trainee” to “find their voices on the world’s biggest stage.”With only one Asian screenwriter attached to the movie so far - could this further stereotype Asian people in mainstream media?
ANDIs being Asian holding you back from work promotions by default? We discuss the recent article by the ABC about how Asian-Australians and Asian-Americans are struggling to break through the 'bamboo ceiling'Bamboo ceiling is similar to ‘glass ceiling’ for women, which refers to the idea about the invisible barriers through which Asian people can see managerial positions but cannot reach them.

Wed, 20 Nov 2019 - 28min - 13 - Ok, boomer, that's not my nameOn this week's episode, we discuss:
Simu Liu calls out CNET for mistaking Asian Australian actor Chris Pang for him. Pang has told Huffington Post Australia that it 'trivialises hard-won progress 'for Asian actors. Taylor Swift has released another statement last week calling out Scooter Brauner and her former label Big Machine for prohibiting her from performing her old songs at the American Music Awards. Should Taylor just honour the business agreement? Is she just riding on the #MeToo wave? And finally, WHAT THE HECK 'OK, BOOMER'?It's the viral TikTok meme that has divided two generations. Millennials are using the phrase to shut down baby boomers who are resistant to change - but is it ageist? Is it dismissive? Commentators are calling it the new 'N word'. RECOMMENDATIONS: Phil recommends you check out 'This Is Us' if you haven't seen it yet. Available on Amazon Prime. Tom recommends you check out Buzzfeed Unsolved on YouTube.

Mon, 18 Nov 2019 - 36min - 12 - CHAT: How being named as Radio Disney's 'Next Big Thing' changed JAGMAC's livesHELLO and welcome to this week’s chat with LEMON.
Joining us on the show today are Alyssa and Angelique from the sibling band JAGMAC.
There’s 6 of them: Jared, Angelique, Gabriel, Manjo, Alyssa and CJ.
The group first came together to hold a special birthday performance for their dad and that’s when the idea struck for them to perform together.
From there, they went on to perform at their church before landing themselves on a national tour in the UK with mega pop group Little Mix.
They’re now been named as Radio Disney’s NEXT BIG THING, a title that Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello has held.
In this chat, we cover a lot of things from being an Asian person in the entertainment industry to how the group was tricked in their early days.

Wed, 13 Nov 2019 - 54min - 11 - YouFoodz, why are YouRacist?On today's episode, we discuss:
Meal delivery service YouFoodz is in hot waters after its CEO Lance Giles and Jordana Stott can be heard in an Instagram video making racist slurs towards Asian people. The company has apologised for the comments but one of its major stockists, Woolworths has launched an internal investigation into the incident. The Asian community is currently getting together to boycott the company. Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao and his celebrity friends have swiftly deleted photos of the singer blackfacing Will Smith for Halloween but what does this tell us about China's relationship with racist remarks? Actress Emma Watson has told British Vogue that she's not single, but 'self-partnered' and it has the internet talking about the pressure of having it all by 30. RECOMMENDATIONS: Our guest this week, Melissa Hua recommends you check out the new Netflix documentary about plant-based diets, Game Changer. Phil recommends checking out the new season of Queer Eye in Japan because it's just so wholesome and heart-warming. If you're feeling a bit crafty, Tom recommends trying some DIY miniature sets. Phil says it's advanced origami and to avoid if you suck at hands-on stuff.

Mon, 11 Nov 2019 - 44min - 10 - CHAT: Sarah Rav on battling anorexia as an influencer Part ISarah Rav was in her final years of high school when she started posting daily motivational fitness quotes on Instagram.
What started as a hobby quickly turned into a community of hundreds of thousands of people and before people even learnt what the term ‘influencer’ meant and what they did, Sarah Rav quickly sky rocketed to online stardom.
Sarah regularly posted fitness tips and her progress to her 1.5 million followers but they were noticing something different about Sarah over the years and they were concerned.
She brushed off the comments about her weight and thinner look but it wasn’t until when the Dean of her med school pulled her aside and demanded she saw a GP that she decided to take time off for herself.
Sarah’s story is incredible and she’s been really open about her journey with overcoming anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder causing someone to obsess about weight and what they eat. We encourage you to open your hearts and mind to see the hardship when it comes to mental health as her recovery story is incredible.

Wed, 06 Nov 2019 - 32min - 7 - My boyfriend dumped me for a dating showOn the show today we are joined by Kerry and Angela Kang and discuss about: Kanye West has released his Christian album 'Jesus Is King' and has revealed he is a 'woke Christian'. He has also said that his kid North West will no longer be allowed to wear make up and wear crop tops. West has also said that he no longer wants Kim Kardashian to be sexy because it made him feel uncomfortable when other rappers look at his wife. Love Island Maurice Salib made headlines before he was dropped off in the island for dumping his famous girlfriend Christie Swadling just weeks before the show aired. You can watch her YouTube video here.Filipino actor Alex Diaz was forced to come out as bisexual after his personal trainer made accusations that the upcoming actor messaged him on Instagram asking him to hook up. The PT uploaded the screenshots onto Facebook.Diaz has since then apologised for not being his true self and said that the decision to not come out was both for personal and professional reasons.
Recommendations:Phil recommends everyone to check out Modern Love the podcast and then watch the series on Amazon Prime.
Angela recommends buying two scoops of ice cream if you're sharing because apparently that saves you money... (she can't be trusted with her maths!)
Kerry recommends listening and watching the Vox series Today, Explain.
Tom recommends everyone to stop the tap water in the shower to save water and money BUT really, his real recommendation is to check vending and ticketing machines for any loose change.

Mon, 28 Oct 2019 - 49min - 6 - CHAT: Gia Gunn opens up about feud with RuPaul on Drag Race & posting gender-affirming surgeryDrag Race star Gia Gunn has opened up for the first time about postponing her transition surgery to compete on the latest season of All Stars.
Speaking to Lemon Podcast, Gunn said, “My surgery was postponed because I knew if I had gotten surgery, I wouldn’t have been able to go on the show.”
Gunn said having the opportunity to be the first transgender woman on the show outweighed her own priorities to have surgery and that she had used the money she saved to buy outfits to compete.
She later started a GoFundMe page to raise $30,000 for her surgery after competing on the show last year.
The decision to return for All Starswas not an easy decision for Gia Gunn, who famously called RuPaul out for his comments on why transgender women weren’t allowed to compete on the franchise.
After apologising for his comments, the show invited Gunn to compete on All Stars, to which she said she was only brought back as a ‘diversity hire’ and for her trans visibility.
However, Gunn had an altercation with RuPaul on the show which did not go to air.
“I was not having the best day that day and I was kind of looking for her to be more supportive in the moment and I just didn’t feel that from her,”
“I thought I was brought on for my visibility, I guess not being acknowledged for simply being trans and now a beautiful woman, was hurtful.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race is now a global franchise and is in several countries including the UK, Chile, Thailand and soon in Canada & Australia.
When asked on whether she would return to the franchise, Gia Gunn said she had no interest in coming back.
“I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to say that she is sold out,” she said.“She doesn’t really care much anymore other than her pay cheque; where she’s gonna stand and what she’s gonna say and that's why the show has lost so much creativity and abundance and all these things that it lacks.”

Mon, 14 Oct 2019 - 35min - 2 - CHAT: Dami Im on dealing with racist Twitter trolls after competing X Factor & EurovisionOn today’s episode we are joined by a trailblazer in the entertainment industry.Dami Im first came onto our screens in 2013 where she went on to win the entire X FACTOR competition.
Despite her CRAZY talented vocal chords, people felt the need to voice their opinion that she did not deserve to win because she looks Chinese (even though she was actually born in South Korea)
When you think of Asian representation in media, how many can you actually think of? Not many right?
So like most Asians in Western countries, we look to Dami because she’s on the forefront of creation representation in mainstream media.
She has even gone on to having a number ONE single and album as well as earning us our highest placement as runner up on Eurovision, where she was watched by more than 200 million people.
In this week’s IN CONVERSATION, Dami opens up about her childhood and how she was one of four Asian kids in her school. She also talks about the racism she faced and her newfound control over her music career.
We hope you enjoy this chat with Dami!
