We will tell you all you need to know about the fires that threatened the plant, the people involved in the clean up and cover up, the evacuations, the thousands of “liquidators” that risked their lives with no hesitation, those that suffered from acute radiation syndrome and the medical teams that fought to keep them alive. Thu, 09 Sep 2021 - 39min - 64 - 63. The Chernobyl Disaster Part 1
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about.. the world's largest nuclear disaster! We are definitely stepping into new territory with this one, as we dive into the unsettling case of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident. Get ready for science class as this episode will be all about radiation, nuclear power, and what series of events lead up to the explosion on April 26, 1986, in Reactor Number Four. We tried to make it a bit more entertaining than your high school physics class so don’t run away! Join us as we discuss the construction of the power plant, along with the city that housed the workers, how nuclear energy works and its destructive history, what radiation is and the effects it can have on humans, and of course, exactly how the nuclear accident occurred in Chernobyl and the events that immediately followed. You may be asking, could this really be considered a true crime case? We certainly think so! Not only is it a dark and twisty topic, but it has a trial, conviction, and possibly the highest death toll out of all of any story we’ve covered in the past.. and perhaps, even in the future. But you’ll have to come back for Part 2 to learn all of those details! Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation. Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! In this episode we wrap up the case of child-murderer Diane Downs, as we discuss her arrest, trial, and conviction. With a focus on the trial, we will find out how one of Diane’s surviving victims, her own nine year old daughter, became the star witness that helped put her behind bars. With additional evidence, we are now also able to paint a more clear picture of what actually happened on the night of May 19, 1983 on Old Mohawk Road. Unfortunately, even after this devil-woman was finally put behind bars, the story doesn't end as she was able to escape prison in 1987. Join us for this rollercoaster as we uncover the truth in Diane’s web of lies, the damning evidence that thankfully locked her away, her escape and recapture from Oregon Women’s Correctional Institute, and where she and her surviving children are today. Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! For our next series we'll be diving into the horrendous and aggravating case of Diane Downs. In this episode we sift through the garbage that is Diane’s story of how her three children and herself were attacked by an apparent “shaggy-hair gunman”. Her story, like garbage, stinks, and the police are not buying it. In this series we will discuss how the night of May 19, 1983 unfolded and try to answer the many questions that surround this case. Why did the attacker target the three children, while the mother only had a gunshot wound to her left forearm? Who was this woman that did not even react to the news that her daughter had died? What led up to this night? Who are the men that were left in her wake? And what really happened that night down on Old Mohawk Road? Join us for Part 1 to find out the events that took place in the ER that night, Diane’s version of the story, her early life, relationships, and pregnancies, and the evidence that is starting to pile up against her. Thu, 15 Apr 2021 - 23min - 52 - 51. The Manson Family Murders Part 3
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! In Part 3 of The Manson Family Murders, we are going to trial! We will discuss all of the puzzle pieces that prosecuting attorney, Vincent Bugliosi, had put together in order to establish the motive behind the gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders and to prove that the co-defendants were guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Those being tried for conspiracy to commit murder and murder in the first degree included: Charles Manson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Leslie Van Houten. Of course, that would not be an easy task as the motive, 'helter sketler', was far from conventional and the mastermind behind it all, was not actually present for the slayings. If the case itself wasn't difficult enough, the trial complicated things even further. With the constant disruptions, threats towards the Judge and prosecutor, an attempted murder, and another dead body discovered, it is no wonder that the events in that courtroom made history. Join us as we discuss the details of the indictments, witness testimony, the criminal trial, penalty trial, convictions, and the sentencing. Thu, 25 Mar 2021 - 30min - 50 - 49. The Manson Family Murders Part 2
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! Here we go! Part 2 of the bizarre and intricate story of The Manson Family Murders! In this episode we start connecting the murders with those that were responsible for them, including the man that orchestrated it all: Charles Manson. It all started to unravel when two young women were found by police trying to escape the hippie cult they had been living with, out in the desert. They were able to point detectives in the right direction by giving them the name Susan Atkins, who had apparently been involved with the murder of Gary Hinman. It turns out that Susan also liked to share her experiences with gruesome murder and ‘Helter Skelter’ with other inmates. It was also discovered that Charlie tried to keep the biker gang ‘The Straight Satans’ around his commune as well, and they too had a wealth of information to share. Join us as we discuss the details of the jailhouse confessions, a firsthand account of the Tate murders, even more deaths, and of course, we get to meet ‘The Family’. Thu, 11 Mar 2021 - 37min - 48 - 47. The Manson Family Murders Part 1
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! For the one year anniversary of Murder & Merlot, we are celebrating by telling the story that started our passion for true crime: The Manson Family Murders! In this episode we set the scene with the horrific murders that took place in Los Angeles during the summer of 1969. The first night of slaughter claimed the lives of five victims, including movie actress, Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant. The following night, two more lives were taken, as Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were attacked in their home. Both events included multiple stab wounds, affluent Caucasian victims, ligature, and messages written in blood. However, even though these savage attacks were eerily similar, the LAPD decided right away that they were not connected. Join us as we discuss the details of these gruesome deaths, the victims, evidence that was left behind, and one more murder at the end that may lead us to the killers. Thu, 11 Feb 2021 - 43min - 44 - 43. Dennis Rader: The BTK Killer Part 2
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! In this episode we wrap up the case of serial killer Dennis Rader, also known as The BTK Killer. After six murders, Dennis Rader still had “Factor-X” burning inside of him. He went on to kill three more victims, but he couldn’t stop there. The thought of anyone else getting credit for his ‘work’ drove him to play cat and mouse games with the police in order to taunt them and to continue to instill fear in the community as the BTK Killer was still walking amongst them. Fortunately though, these games led authorities right back to the man responsible for ten brutal murders in one of the most iconic captures in true crime history. Join us as we discuss Dennis Rader’s final victims and eventual apprehension and conviction after three long decades of tormenting the citizens of Kansas. Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! In this episode we start the deep dive into the murderous monster that is Dennis Rader, also known as The BTK Killer. Dennis Rader was a master at compartmentalizing. It is hard to believe that one person can be such a loving and caring family man on the outside, but on the inside, have the desire and the ability to bind, torture, and kill 10 innocent victims. Everyone in the community knew him as a father, husband, church leader, cub scout leader, outdoorsman, and hard worker. What they didn’t know was that he was also the prolific serial killer that horrified Kansans and stumped Wichita Police for 30 years. Join us as we discuss Dennis Rader’s early life and his horrible deeds, with a focus on his first 7 victims. Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation. Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! In this episode we will be taking a deep dive into the brutal and bizarre murder of the 'All-American Girl', Karla Brown. Karla was excited to start the next chapter in her life. She had just gotten engaged to her high-school sweetheart and they were moving into their new home. Unfortunately though, her new beginnings had a quick and bitter end. She was murdered before the couple had even spent their first night in their new home. Not only was her murder shocking, but they way her body was posed was even more disturbing. This did, however, provide great insight as to what happened to this beautiful young woman on June 20, 1978 in Lima, Ohio. Join us as we discuss the chaotic crime scene, multiple autopsies, controversial evidence, and the FBI's behavioral profile that helped investigators capture the killer. Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation. As always, answer our questions at the end and we might read your response on next week's show! Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! In this episode we will be taking a deep dive into the case of the Trailside Killer, who was responsible for ten murders from 1979-1981. Preying on vulnerable hikers in the San Francisco area, Carpenter used the secluded and heavily wooded trails to his advantage. Although he was becoming quite proficient in his murders, the blitz-style attacks told FBI's John Douglas a lot about who the UNSUB was. From there, he was able to provide a detailed and accurate profile that helped catch the killer. Grab your glass (& a box of tissues) and get cozy, let’s talk about murder! In this special mini episode, we dive into the horrific story of the Oklahoma City bombing. I know, I know, we said we weren't going to be doing mini episodes anymore but this story is directly related to the Waco case so we had to tell it! On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh parked a rented vehicle full of explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. His goal was to make the ATF and the FBI feel the same way as those that lost loved ones in Ruby Ridge and in the Waco siege. What resulted was the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history. 168 lives were lost, including 19 children, and several hundred more were injured. Warning: you will likely feel extreme rage during this episode and we wouldn't be surprised if you cried in the end, we sure did! Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation. Thu, 09 Jul 2020 - 1h 00min - 17 - 17. The Worst 'Dexter Killer' Ever- Mark Twitchell (Mini)
Grab your glass and get cozy, let’s talk about murder! Continuing with the theme of Canadian murders, this week we are discussing the case of the so-called ‘Dexter Killer’ from Edmonton, Alberta… or as the locals call it, “Deadmonton”. One man meets a woman online, goes on a date, and is never seen alive again. A second man meets a woman online, but instead of a date, he gets attacked by a madman wearing a hockey mask.. Did we mention this was in Canada? An aspiring filmmaker turns to murder for inspiration, after he catfishes his victims online. He then writes about the experiences in the hopes of making it into a movie. Thu, 02 Jul 2020 - 45min - 16 - 16. Swift Runner and the Legend of the Wendigo (Mini)
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about mythological creatures, and of course, murder! This week we wanted to cover a case local to Alberta, and trust us, this one will not disappoint. This dark and twisty episode not only tells the terrifying tale of the Wendigo, but also how it affected a man named Swift Runner, which ultimately led to the deaths of his entire family. Wendigos have been a part of Algonquin-speaking First Nations traditions for ages, but although they might just be legends so some, they have resulted in very real murders. The winter of 1878-79 was particularly harsh for the Cree family in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Unfortunately, those experiencing extreme isolation, cold, and hunger are the most susceptible to the evil spirit, so the conditions were perfect for possession. Swift Runner began drinking heavily in an attempt to drown the voices of the Wendigo in his mind, but eventually was no longer able to contain his cannibalistic urges. Join us to learn of the events that resulted in our provinces first legal hanging, and let us know if you think this man was being controlled by a supernatural being, or if he was truly the sinister one. Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation. As always, answer our question at the end and we might even read your response on next week's show! Thu, 25 Jun 2020 - 34min - 15 - 15. Hinterkaifeck- The Unsolved Family Massacre (Mini)
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! Regardless of whether or not you are a fan of unsolved cases, we promise you, this story is equally fascinating and disturbing. With so many twists and turns, it is no wonder that the bizarre and brutal Hinterkaifeck murders are still often discussed, and debated, to this day. In the early 1920s, an entire German family and their new maid were systematically killed, one by one, in the barn, and in their home. The perpetrator of this horrific crime was never brought to justice, however, many theories continue to stand the test of time. Was it a bitter past lover, a deceased husband who may or may not have come back from the dead, or was it a crazed individual unknown to the family? Join us to find out all of the grisly details and let us now what you decide! Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation. Thu, 11 Jun 2020 - 53min - 13 - 13. Model to Murderer- Omaima Nelson (Mini)
Grab your glass and get cozy, let's talk about murder! This weeks story is so crazy, it should be fiction. When picturing what a cannibal would look like, you likely have an image of Jeffrey Dahmer or Hannibal Lector in your mind. Omaima Nelson, a young Egyptian model, is quite the opposite of that. However, even though she was incredibly beautiful, the crimes she committed were hideous. Omaima met, married, and murdered 56 year old Bill Nelson, all within a couple of months. After the killing, she spent three days dismembering the body, disposing of some parts, and cooking the rest. Join us to find out all of the grisly details, but be warned, this episode is not for the faint of heart. Make sure to check out our socials and add to the conversation.
