For the past 21.5 years, Lt. Paramedic Jimmy Berry has enjoyed working in the busiest companies. His longest and most enjoyable stint has been with Truck 30, Orange County, FL Fire Rescue. When Jimmy reports to the firehouse each tour, the questions of "What adventure are we going to have today" tends to be their theme. Going to fires is the norm, but the truck also has rescue support work that is performed at America's most prestigious theme parks. "America's Truck" is a good place to work and Jimmy appreciates the sense of family in the firehouse. He is passionate about family; his own as well as those that he rides with each tour. His infectious smile would lead you to believe the job has always been good to him but in fact, there was a time where he wanted to walk away. The job can get heavy and it takes its' toll on our people. Jimmy was not exempt from this aspect of the job he grew to love. Overcoming this difficult time, Jimmy has grown to love the job and what it has to offer. Learning how to deal with the emotional stress of the job has become a big part of how he navigates the firehouse today. Enjoy what you have and what you do. Sometimes you meet people in the most peculiar way. Drew Schaumann currently possesses the 1 of 1 NFR hockey jersey that was worn at FDIC 2024 during the daily auctions in Firefighter's Row. He was the highest bidder for sweater, he was no going to lose. It wasn't so much being an NFR jersey, but rather the donation to furthering metal health awareness in the fire service. Drew's story has been impacted by mental health and so, he makes it an important part of his focus. Growing up in a firefighters home, Drew had opportunity to see the job first hand while being mentored by incredible people. A firefighter in Winter Park, FL, he has a new found passion for the job through a refocus of himself and the important things he holds close. Family, wellness and training - three things that challenge him to be the best self he can be. Working as part of the VES Training Cadre, Drew's passion for training has opened many doors for him as well as building relationships that he cherishes more than ever. His message is strong throughout this episode and I believe many listeners will resonate with his story. Drew Schaumann is just beginning his journey and has so much to offer. I excited to see him again at FDIC 2025 so that we can continue to raise awareness for firefighter's mental health while putting the NFR jersey back on the auction block.

Battalion Chief Tony Bratcher has doubled down on the fire service. His dedication and passion to his job shows through his understanding of paying it forward. He works hard to empower the people around him and he knows that in order to leave a legacy behind, it requires hard work and the next generation. Not only does he believe in educating those around him, he recognizes the importance of letting your people work while promoting a positive, family focused atmosphere in and out of the firehouse. Tony is a member of the Kitchen Table Podcast, KTP, and works hard at spreading the good word about the fire service. His commitment is steadfast while continuing to be a student of the craft he loves.

Jeremy sits down with some members of the Lower Township Fire District #2, Town Bank, NJ to discuss their 2022 Tower Ladder build from Fire and Safety Services, NJ. This new Pierce apparatus is the May featured truck in the 2024 Calendar project. A big part of understanding the apparatus builds is understanding the department and how they operate. So many factors go into the design and operations of a new apparatus. Looking at the final build is always easier to understand when you know why they built what they did. TJ Prieur, a Frederick County, MD Firefighter, has come to understand who he is. It took him a long time to figure out what he needed and more so, what he wanted out of life. Finding his home in Frederick County, MD, everything was back on track and going smoothly until TJ found himself as part of the RIT Team who pulled Captain Josh Laird out of burning building. The events of this LODD certainly added to the traumas TJ has faced along his path and it played a part un recognizing the importance of life. His story is powerful and one that resonates with many of us. Today, TJ finds himself working with others teaching the process through programs like Mind the Frontline and Framework to Freedom.

A Pennsylvania transplant to Florida, John Simpson, known better as "Bart" to his friends has had an incredible career in the fire service. With over 40 years in the job, his passion and commitment to the craft remains at a constant high. His early roots formed a passion for training and betterment of the job. Retied from the job, he continues to teach with On-Scene Training Associates across the world. Bart is also a founding members of the FOOLS International which in its' early days was a bunch of like minded Brothers learning from one another while sharing stories and their experiences. This today has become an institution in the American Fire Service, an organization proud to promote the core mission of what the fire service is all about. Bart's love for the job is unwavering and his long career has left a lasting impression on so many.

Engineer Jennifer Osborne is fierce and committed. Her love for the fire service is trumped by her love of the process. This NJ native went all in, finding mentors who helped her find her way navigating a career she knew nothing about in Clark County, NV. Jennifer believes in the process and this is done through education which in her words is the best way to achieve diversity. So many come to the job without prior experience or knowledge of what the fire service is all about. Jennifer helps run the "Beyond Explorers" program which addresses this issue. The next step after the young explorer program is taking interested people and educating them about the job, expectations, terminology and all the other aspects of the job we take for granted. This program creates a solid base for those that want to pursue the fire service by giving them the tools they need before taking the leap. Jennifer pulls no punches and has a great story to tell. Her all in attitude is certainly representative of what we need to push this job forward.

He had a great officer spot and was happy with leading his company. But we need solid firefighters and good leaders to step up and have a seat at the table. We need these people to help keep command staffs grounded and in touch with the actual day to day. Chad Cave is working hard to ensure the Frederick County firefighters have what they need to do their jobs.

During our trip to Maui, HI, Jeremy had the opportunity to sit down with Louis Romero, a retired Battalion Chief with the Maui Fire Department. He, along with many other retired members of the department, assisted after the devastating fires that consumed parts of the beautiful island. Chief Romero talks about the importance of having ancestral knowledge and understanding the environment. History repeats itself and their spirituality helps them understand their culture and the land they respect and love. This insightful and powerful conversation concludes with a beautiful song written by Chief Romero.

This Behind the Department episode is part of the 2024 Calendar project launched in conjunction with Fire and Safety Services of NJ. Jonathan Yahr joins Jeremy on the podcast. Chief of the Lakewood, NJ Fire Department, Chief Yahr is all in on his department and community. The fastest growing community in NJ, Lakewood is bursting at the seams and it is the fire department's responsibility to keep up. As the department grows, it is imperative to not lose sight of the past. You cannot progress forward without knowing where you came from andChief Yahr is passionate about the department's foundation. History matters and it can influence the decisions of today. Chief Yahr is excited for the growth and continues to push his people to provide the best service they can for their community. The Chief is "not an office guy" and loves to be in the trenches with his firefighters. Continuing to move forward, Danny Dwyer is now a Battalion Chief with a growling department in the Atlanta metro area. In his newly promoted position, Danny finds it humbling to be able to help write the playbook for the department. His ability to work with the new full time hires as well as creating the desired culture that fuels firemanship, Danny works hard at finding the right balance and pace while navigating new waters. It is an exciting time for Danny Dwyer and he is not looking back, only forward!!

Deputy Chief Al Pratts of the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department believes that the fire service chose him. Heading down an early path of law enforcement, by chance he found the fire service and fell in love. Going all in on a career he had little knowledge prior to his appointment, the challenge of the job tested him from early on. Currently, Al is the Deputy Chief of Special Operations (SOC) which he can't get enough of. He finds himself blessed to have the opportunity to be in the position he is today due in part to some solid senior men from his early years. Today, Al is also a member of the Promotional Prep team, a tutoring and consulting firm that helps entry level firefighters and officers alike learn how to score well on civil service tests.
